STRONG MEMBERSHIP
WE – ALL MEMBERS – ARE THE PAA! Our numbers continue to grow beyond projection; this is an essential time for analysis & planning specific to both recruitment & retention strategies. We are developing a membership recruitment & retention plan that will target students, Provisionals, & then early career psychologists in enhancing our membership benefits tailoring to your needs. Our newly revamped Psymposium has launched & our website is being completely retooled with an impressive update set to launch in 2019. Despite that, our online & social media presence continues to grow. At present, our average daily unique visitors are 238 to PAA’s website, 400 to PAA’s Facebook, 150 to PAA’s Twitter account, & 60 to PAA’s LinkedIn all with progressively more active member & public engagement. Members continue to benefit from Dr Jon Amundson’s timely, topical, & at times, controversial information podcasts & PAA’s award-winning Practice Advisor Program in addition to our supervision list & work to support quality psychological supervision in Alberta. Our PAA Referral service continues to grow in access despite less than 10% of members being listed – a remarkable marketing opportunity for members in private practice with the service being accessed over 50 times daily on average. PAA is committed to in-person, two-way communication with our members, students, & all psychologists inperson, by email, & phone. Formal presentations to graduate students, townhalls for members, & psychology group presentations are ongoing. We have also launched our annual PAA Member Satisfaction Survey & have both implemented recommendations & planned on yearly surveys to set & assess key performance indicators (outcome-informed practices). 8
REFERRAL SERVICE PAA’s popular Referral Service will soon get a major reboot as we launch our revised web presence. This, however, remains a frequently accessed resource by clients, community groups, & media outlets. The service is advertised in our townhalls, on HUTV, via 211, on our website, on our animated video, in yellow pages, on all PAA promotional materials & brochures, at all PAA continuing professional development activities, it is a paid push on Facebook, via “Keep your Cup Full”, & is promoted on all our social media channels. We thank all referral service members for their ongoing participation with this valuable resource.
MEMBER BENEFIT: LIABILITY INSURANCE PROGRAM The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) & the Council of Professional Associations of Psychology (CPAP) co-own the member-funded BMS Liability Insurance Plan ensuring that our members get the best possible rates on the most comprehensive psychology liability insurance. ENHANCE GOOD GOVERNANCE 2015-2020 PAA Strategic Plan Goal
34
We have a strong board of directors & are actively building the leaderships capacity of these key volunteers while also exploring ways to develop the leadership capabilities of psychologists across the province. Our student board member will now have a vote & we are actively incorporating overall changes to solidify our strategic plans. From an administrative perspective, we will optimize our physical office space & enhance accessibility for all members. We have a new Communications Officer & are looking forward to increasing member benefits due to changes in the organizational structure. We now regularly welcome clinical field placement students & job shadow students. We believe in psychologically healthy workplaces & PAA has been working to align our organization as a leader in that respect with monthly “Healthy Us initiatives & staff benefits that includes up to $2 000/year to access a registered psychologist.
35
GOOD GOVERNANCE
FROM THE PRESIDENT Perhaps because my College of Alberta registration number is likely the lowest of all our current board members, I will be serving as president of the PAA board for another year. My goal this year is to provide mentorship for the many board members who will capably serve in executive roles now & in the future. PAA has been very competently shepherded by Dr. Judi Malone this last year & we are thrilled to have her at the helm. She has forged a collaborative relationship with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), which allows both organizations to work together in helping each of us achieve excellence in our work & to be recognized for such. Our joint Annual Meeting & Professional Development Day on 22 September 2018 speaks to the collaboration between our two organizations. Dr. Malone & Dr. Spelliscy, CEO of CAP have also held joint town hall meetings throughout the province over this last year. Furthermore, Dr. Malone has worked collaboratively with mental health stakeholders, provincially & nationally, raising the profile of psychology accordingly. In addition to her advocacy work for psychologists, she is an energetic & creative promoter of best practices at the board & administrative level. She has developed an administrative team that I believe is second to none. We are indeed fortunate to have her. The board for 2018-19 is comprised of myself, Amrita Bhar, Sandra Gallace, Dr. Sally Maclean, Lisa McIsaac, Dr. Kelly Schwartz (vice president), Dr. David St. Arnault, Nicki Wilson & Clare Peterson. We said goodbye to Dr. Jo Eustace, who served competently as our treasurer. My term will conclude in 2019; watch for the call for nominations in early spring. I would encourage each of you to consider running for a board position. The learning that occurs as a board member far exceeds the time expended. I am indeed honoured to serve as your President for the next year. With your support of PAA, & the work of Dr. Malone & our administrative team, I believe that our profession will gain a stronger voice in the mental health landscape. As psychologists, provisional psychologists & students of psychology, let our voices continue to promote the well-being & potential of all Albertans through our science-based knowledge & expertise. FROM THE TREASURER I am pleased to report to the PAA membership on the fiscal status of the association for the 2017-2018 year. As incoming treasurer (May 2018) I am excited to lend my talents to ensuring PAA remains successful & viable for many years to come. There are some incredible changes in the future, including a website rebuild & facility renovations. A new membership recruitment & retention strategy & increased number of quality workshops promise continued revenue that will be spent to further advance the science-based profession of psychology & promote the well-being & potential of all Albertans. In accordance with our bylaws, BDO Canada LPP served as the auditor. A summary of their report is included in the Annual Report & the full financial statements can be accessed by request. Thank you to all PAA staff, board members, & key contributors for your ongoing work in managing the budget & financial resources.
