Working on the Strip:

Project Profile on Las Vegas Hard Rock Casino Podium

 The construction of the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Vegas is underway, featuring a 400,000-square-foot casino podium as the base.

Many of the projects our P1 Las Vegas teams work on are located on the famous Las Vegas “Strip.”

Working in this location comes with challenges unique to the Strip, including space limitations and “sharing” that space with multiple competitors.

the building, and will also have the pool buildings for the pool deck.

The original underground project contract value was $2,187,942, with an additional $9,999,277 received .

Brian says the project will probably finish at around $20,000,000.

“We are currently at 108 change orders, with the list growing larger each day, bringing an additional estimated $6,821,403,” he said.

“As with most Las Vegas projects, this one has been a plethora of changes, and will continue to grow with numerous venues coming through the end of 2026 for bid,” Brian said.

P1 also has to “share” the workload with other contractors on

“Most - if not all - large mechanical/electrical contractors in Las Vegas have work in this project with the two GCs,” Brian said. 

“This can make for an unusual coordination effort with several of our competitors, but fortunately, working on the same area with competitors has been a good experience overall.”

Brian also notes that limited space means coordination with vendor partners on deliveries requires even more dexterity.

“As with many projects these days, “just in time” (JIT) delivery is utilized to minimize congestion on the construction floor,” he explained.

“Our field leadership works with vendors to coordinate access with the numerous trades and other contractors working on site at the same time.”

Quick Facts

Limited space on the Strip also means P1 has to set up shop in some unusual locations, since there is no room for construction trailer “cities”, or even construction trailers.

The Vegas team working on the Podium has been working out of the old Mirage ballrooms.

“Working in an office with a chandelier is definitely a first,” Brian said.

The project is slated for completion in October, 2027, which sounds like a great time to plan a visit to Vegas. 

Putting Down Roots

Associate Profile on Project Engineer Ross Williams

P1 Project Engineer II Ross Williams spent most of his life bouncing around from place to place. Being brought up in a military family, he moved all around the east coast, finally settling in Indiana for high school and then attending Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where he earned a degree in Construction Management.

Ross’s first job had him on the move again. Working for a construction management company, he monitored the closure and structural components of construction sites, a job which took him to Las Vegas and Nashville before he landed in Kansas City.

Tired of moving around, Ross said he was ready to find a job where he could stay in one place, and that’s when he found P1.

Shortly after hire, he was assigned to Project Kansas, the massive battery plant in DeSoto, KS.

“My background was primarily in electrical, so stepping into that project was a huge whirlwind, but I was able to learn so much about piping and mechanical, which was all new to me.” Ross said.

“I really enjoyed being exposed to the different trades and learning how to implement the skills I already possessed in a manner that could assist the team and project.”

Ross had substantial experience with Microsoft Excel, which turned out to be a benefit.

“During Project Kansas, Chris Champagne [Operations Manager] asked me to design a of way of tracking our progress,” Ross said. “I was able to create a form for logging the progress, installation, and linear footage of everything we had going into the project, following it from ordering materials all the way to full production.”

Senior Project Manager Zach Kittle worked closely with Ross and said it was great to have him on the team.

“His upbeat personality brought some levity to the fastpaced and often stressful work environment,” Zach said.

“And he would keep you on your toes by randomly speaking to you in German.”

“When P1 was awarded Wing 2 at Project Kansas, we put Ross in charge of the assembly/winding project,”

In this role, Ross learned all about reviewing and generating submittals, RFIs, writing POs, managing subs and vendors, and also gained some experience in forecasting.

To date, Ross says Project Kansas is the largest project he has worked on.

“My biggest project prior to that was the Sphere out in Las Vegas,” he said.

“I thought that was big, but then I got here and Project Kansas is significantly larger. I can’t count how many times I’ve gotten lost in that place!”

Ross is now working on NRD, a large data center currently underway in Kansas City, MO (referenced in the June issue).

Ross says he is confident that his experience at Project Kansas will guide him into this next challenge, and onto what he hopes is a lasting career at P1.

JUST FOR FUN

Ross doesn’t have any family nearby, so he spends a lot of his free time working on his fitness and hanging out with his dog Balto, a 100lb husky pit bull mix.

Ross is also still finding out what Kansas has to offer. “I’m still pretty new here and I have a lot to see.”

Speaking of fitness, Ross recently trained and ran a “ruck race” on June 4.

In a ruck race, participants run two miles while carrying 40 lbs. of weight. Several P1 associates participated, with VDC Specialist Ozzy Scoggin placing first, Project Engineer Griffin Souder coming in second, and Ross finishing third.

Ross said he didn’t care where he placed, as long as he came in ahead of Foreman Brooks Peek (j/k).

“I’ve only worked on two projects for P1 so far, and they’ve both been massive,” he said.

“I think this work will continue to come in,” he added. “I understand the workload could easily surpass five and maybe even six years just on this one project.”

Feeling comfortable that P1 will sustain work for the long term is just one of the things that Ross enjoys about P1.

He says he noticed one thing right away: P1’s commitment to develop the next generation.

“I’ve only been here a little over two years, but I’ve already greatly benefited from the training and development culture that is so prevalent here,” he said.

“I’ve been instructed not only in the areas I need to do my job today, but also for growth and advancement in the future.” 

WHAT’S IN A NAME ?

P1 Conference Rooms Honor the Foundation of Those Who Came Before Us

One of our P1 associates suggested this for the newsletter, and we thought it was a great idea. If you’ve ever been to the P1 Construction HQ in Lenexa, KS, you may have noticed the room names. If you’re new to P1, you may wonder what some of them mean. Here’s a breakdown of the meaning behind the name – and a little history lesson on P1 as well.

JACOBSON ROOM

This room is named after Abraham David (A.D.) Jacobson (pictured, above), the “founding father” of what is P1 today. He founded A.D. Jacobson Plumbing and Heating Co., Inc. in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo. This is also why you may see P1’s founding date as “1919”.

FUN FACT:

When the marketing firm hired to create the P1 logo just wasn’t hitting the mark, Charles jotted an idea on a napkin – the same image featuring the “P” and “1” that is our logo today!

HUXTABLE ROOM

This room is named after Melvin Huxtable, who founded Huxtable & Associates in Lawrence, KS, in 1927. Huxtable would open Huxtable LT in Topeka, KS, and HUX-KC in Kansas City, MO, which would later merge with A.D. Jacobson and become ADJ-HUX.

BRANDON ROOM

In 1997, Charles Brandon (left), James Gathen, and Smitty Belcher consolidated A.D. Jacobson and Huxtable & Associates to form the A.D. Jacobson Holding Company. In 2001, A.D. Jacobson Holding Company acquired U.S. Electrical, and in 2007, the three leaders changed the company name to P1 Group, Inc., representing the five companies held: A.D. Jacobson, Huxtable, Huxtable LT, ADJ-Hux, and U.S. Electrical.

The single-source capabilities under one roof inspired the company tagline “The Expertise of Many, The Power of One,” represented by “P1”.

WHAT’S IN A NAME ?

BELCHER ROOM

The Belcher Room is named after Smitty Belcher. Smitty served as CEO/Owner of P1 Group, Inc. from 1998 – 2022. Today, Smitty’s son Bruce Belcher is CEO of P1 Construction, LLC.

WAR ROOM

“A centralized space, either physical or digital, where a cross-functional team gathers to manage, monitor, and quickly resolve high-priority incidents or complex projects.” In the past, the “War Room” was where P1 gathered on bid day. It usually involved frantic activity as everyone waited for bids to come in at the last minute so proposals could be finalized.

BOILER ROOM

CENTURY ROOM

This room was added more recently. It’s called “Century”, commemorating P1’s 100+ year history, and was created shortly after P1 celebrated 100 years as an organization.

ISOLATION ROOM

Sounds kind of sad, but an isolation room is actually a “specialized hospital environment used to prevent the spread of infectious diseases or protect immunocompromised patients.” P1 is involved in the installation of mechanical systems in “isolation rooms”, often found in hospitals. Think of COVID or tuberculosis: isolation rooms protect the public from the spread of infectious diseases by utilizing negative air pressurization in relation to adjacent areas.

CHILLER ROOM

This one should be self explanatory! Hopefully, it’s a known fact P1 works on/installs boilers.

The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with family, friends, and community. As you enjoy the holiday, remember to make space for your mental well-being, too.

Give Yourself Permission to Take a Break

Social gatherings can be fun, but they can also feel overwhelming. If you need time to recharge:

•Step away for a few minutes and find a quiet space.

•Take a walk or spend a moment outdoors.

•Leave early if needed without feeling guilty.

Be Mindful with Alcohol

Alcohol can affect mood, emotions, and decisionmaking. Consider:

•Setting personal limits before an event.

•Alternating alcoholic drinks with water.

•Choosing what feels right for you.

Let Go of Perfection

Even when hosting, the best holiday memories rarely come from a perfectly planned event.

•Focus on enjoying the people around you.

•Give yourself grace if everything doesn’t go exactly as planned.

•Remember: connection matters more than perfection.

Take Time to Reflect

Beyond the fireworks and festivities, consider what Independence Day means to you:

 Winning Condiments: P1 represented well at the MCAKC/SMACNA night at the Kansas City Monarchs game in June. That’s Project Engineer Griffin Souder (Ketchup), who appears to be coming in first, with Project Engineer Parker Jenkins (Pickle), who actually clinched the first place spot at the final moment!

 Summer Foreman Meeting: Another group of foremen joined for an afternoon of fun. The day started with a “state of the union” address from President Kollin Knox and safety statistics from Vice President Don Campbell. A lunch of grilled hamburgers, brats and hot dogs was served before everyone went outside for some friendly competition and games. The weather was fantastic and the activities included water balloon battleship, egg toss, darts, corn hole, ping pong and many others. P1 truly appreciates our foremen for all they do!

 The Summer is Underway for the Interns: The interns got out of the office and teamed up with P1’s trusted business partners Midwest Machinery and SPX Cooling. They were treated to an inside look at the SPX Cave where new products are being developed and tested. Then they moved on to the Midwest Machinery/Marley manufacturing facility in Olathe, KS, to see the products being built.

 Making a Difference: The P1 Annual “Fore Safety” Golf Tournament in May was a success once again. Not only did our golfers and sponsors have a great time, money raised went to the family of Chad Wayne Eaves, 46, of Springfield, MO. Chad passed away tragically last year during an accident at his pyrotechnic company. Chad left behind his ex-wife, Lisa, sons Christian and Jericho, and daughter, Allison. He also had two grandchildren, Stella and Charity. It’s the ability to help families like this one that make the P1 Fore Safety Golf Tournament a great example of bringing the communities we serve to life.

 Proud Papa: Congratulations to P1 Foreman Simcha “Sam” Mowery. Sam’s son Yonah recently accepted an appointment to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. In addition, Yonah was also offered an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. “Both appointments are a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about Yonah’s character, academic excellence, leadership, and dedication,” Sam said. “We are incredibly proud of Yonah and wish him continued success as he embarks on this exciting journey of service to our nation. Go Army, Beat Navy!”
