Moosa Harraj e President

Dear Members,
To those joining us for the rst time, welcome to the Oxford Union, and to those returning, welcome back!
It is such an honour and a privilege to be serving as your President for this Michaelmas Term. For many of you, this term will mark the beginning of your Oxford journey. I still remember the rst time I stepped foot in the Union Chamber: queuing up on St Michael’s Street to see Tom Hanks deliver what was sure to be a thrilling address. e atmosphere was electric, with members buzzing in the bar and the chamber full to the brim, bringing the place I had only watched on YouTube to life. at is the magic of the Oxford Union. My committee and I have worked tirelessly over the long summer vacation to ensure this term will be even more magical, exciting, and spectacular than my rst term at the Oxford Union was.
is term card is built around bold, un inching debates that cement the Union’s position as a bastion of free speech. Are the courts undermining democracy? Is Mainstream Media an enemy of the people? Is Israel a greater threat to regional stability than Iran? e
debates are designed to provoke, to unsettle, and above all, to inspire. We are honoured to invite you to be a part of the tapestry of challenging thought and intellectual vigour that underpins our great institution. To debate here is not simply to argue: it is to test ideas against the sharpest minds, to confront tradition, and to kindle the possibility of change. And this term, we want to bring that opportunity directly to you: in Week 2’s Courts Debate, any member can ballot for the chance to speak alongside New Zealand’s Foreign Minister and the Governor of Arkansas. For freshers, there is a special debate where you can ballot to argue, against your tutors themselves, whether ChatGPT is truly the better teacher. us, within your very rst fortnight, you will experience the living magic of the Oxford Union.
But it isn’t only about the Chamber. is term brings an exceptional range of socials, panels, and celebrations that strengthen our community. From an Oxford Boat Party on the ames and a Bacchanalia Ball to Boxing Night and an international festival of global cuisines, Michaelmas is lled with nights to remember. And at the heart of it all are
the individual addresses: from heads of state, Nobel-winning academics, and pioneering scientists to award-winning actors, producers and directors, bestselling authors, world-class athletes, comedians who de ned our age, and business leaders at the top of global markets. Whatever your interest, passion, or career ambition, there is an icon and world-leading gure here to inspire you
My presidency is, and will always be, about the members. e Union is not some strange, distant idea; it is your space, and I am committed to ensuring every one of you nds your place here. e door to my o ce is always open, as without the keen input of our membership the Oxford Union would be nothing. Here’s to a Michaelmas Term with daring debates, unforgettable nights and the extraordinary energy that only the Oxford Union can bring.
Yours Faithfully,

Moosa Harraj Balliol College president@oxford-union.org

Katherine Yang Librarian

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Oxford Union!
is term brings an exciting range of speakers and debates, covering politics, law, science, the arts and more. Some will inspire, others may divide opinion, but that has always been the Union’s purpose: to bring di erent voices together and to give space to di cult questions.
As Librarian, I also have the privilege of looking after the Union’s Library. It has long been at the heart of the society, and remains a place for quiet study and re ection. I hope you will nd it a space you can make use of throughout the term.
I am grateful to the President, Committee and sta whose dedication and work have made this termcard possible, and I am looking forward to seeing the Chamber full, the Library lively, and the Union once again at its best.

Raza Nazar Treasurer
I am honoured to welcome you to Michaelmas Term at the Oxford Union. Looking ahead, this term promises to be electric. Our freshers will step into the Chamber for the rst time, while returning members will rediscover its magic. Voices that have not been heard before matter the most. Every member, including you, has the chance, and the right, to make a contribution that is authentically yours, whether in a debate or a Q&A.

As Treasurer, I am pleased to highlight Treasurer’s Treats: exclusive discounts across Oxford, including 33% o food and drink at Flight Club on Mondays and Fridays. Join Finance Committee on Mondays at 3 PM to learn more about how the Union is run — all members are welcome.

Samy Medjdoub Secretary
Hello everyone, I still remember my rst visit to the Union — stepping into the Chamber and realising just how much history and community sit within these walls. It’s a place where Oxford feels at its most alive, and it’s a privilege to now serve as your Secretary for Michaelmas Term.
Michaelmas is one of the busiest terms in Oxford, and the Union is no exception. Alongside packed debates and distinguished speakers, we’ve put together a range of socials and events that o er something for everyone. Whether it’s celebrating with friends at a bop, enjoying cultural nights that bring our community together, or nding a quiet moment in the bar after a long day, the Union should feel like a space where you belong.
For many, this term will be intense — new beginnings, essay crises, and late nights in the library. My hope is that the Union gives you balance: a place to relax, connect, and enjoy Oxford beyond the deadlines.
I look forward to welcoming you through our doors.
Best Wishes,
Samy Medjdoub Keble College secretary@oxford-union.org
HOW TO GET INVOLVED SPECIAL EVENTS & SPEAKERS
Open Period lasts until 26th October (non-members can use a bod card to access events) WELCOMES HISTORY OF THE UNION DEBATES TREASURER’S TREATS

In 1823, a group of students met in secret to discuss and debate topics which at the time had been prohibited by the University of Oxford. Over the last 200 years, this has evolved into the Oxford Union we see today – the world’s most famous student society, and, in the words of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan (Librarian, Michaelmas 1914), “the last bastion of free speech”.
Whilst the Union has grown in many ways throughout that time, it remains at heart a student debating society, committed to its founding value of free speech and the axiom that debate is crucial to the pursuit of truth and free discussion. For two centuries, students have gathered together in our chamber to grapple with the biggest issues of the day, and as we now begin what will hopefully be another prosperous 200 years, it is tting to look back on our history.
Perhaps our most famous debate was held in 1933, with a motion titled ‘ is House Will under no circumstances ght for its King and country.’ With 275 votes for and 153 against, the motion passed and came to be referred to as the ‘Oxford Oath,’ characterising what many saw as growing paci sm amongst British
youth. Following the debate, the national media seized upon the results, with reports coming from the likes of eTimes, e Daily Telegraph and DailyMail. Winston Churchill himself described the outcome as “thatabject, squalid, shamelessavowal,” whilst his son Randolph even sought to strike it from the Union’s records. However, this motion su ered a resounding defeat in the chamber and he left the chamber with a police escort – the right to free speech had won that day.
More recently, the Union has developed a legacy of hosting a huge range of in uential speakers, from world leaders, to sporting legends, as well as stars of stage and screen.

James Cameron Tudor, the first Afro-Caribbean President (MT 1942, Keble College)

Edward T Nelson - First member of the committee of Afro-Caribbean descent

Consistent with timeless tradition, debates remain our flagship event. Our debates offer you the chance to hear from and to challenge prominent figures on some of the most important questions of our time.
Before the two final speakers on the order paper for the main debate, the chair of the debate will look for members to make two minute ‘floor speeches’. There are prizes on offer for the best floor speech every week, so we warmly encourage you to take part.
Emergency Debates 7.45pm
This features only student speakers, seeking to address topical issues. Motions are set weekly at Consultative Committee, which is open to all members, so attend at 13:15 on a Monday to suggest a topic yourself!
Main Debates 8.30pm
This features high-profile guest speakers from around the world, addressing pressing questions on a variety of topics.
During the Main Debate, you are able to raise Points of Information (POIs) to any speaker by raising your hand and stating ‘Point of Information’. The speaker may reject a POI, but if they choose to accept, a statement must be given briefly in disagreement to the point which has been made. At the end of the debate, we invite you to vote on the motion by walking through either the ‘Ayes’ or ‘Noes’ door.
Before each debate, we host a weekly dinner with our speakers. Any member can ballot for this dinner, either for a paid slot or for a free-of-charge slot; the form will be released each week via email and on our social media channels. Guests are welcome to attend our debates for a small fee, and can purchase guest tickets at the Bar. Guests must be with a Union member to purchase a ticket, and the Union member is responsible for their guest during their time on site.
For security reasons some of our debates may be Members Only. In these cases, notice will be provided on our social media channels and our mailing list.

Once hailed as a pillar of democracy, the mainstream media now faces a crisis of trust. Accused of bias, sensationalism, and even censorship, many outlets are seen less as watchdogs than as powerbrokers serving elite interests. e charge of being an “enemy of the people,” once authoritarian rhetoric, is now shared by millions. As faith in journalism collapses and alternative platforms rise, the question looms: does the mainstream media still defend democracy, or has it become complicit in quietly eroding it?

e 1997 handover of Hong Kong marked the symbolic end of the British Empire - the sun had nally set on history’s largest empire. But was this sunset a moment of liberation, or a historical mistake? Defenders argue the Empire forged global connections: building infrastructure, establishing legal systems, and spreading English and institutions still used today. Since Iran’s 1979 Revolution, tensions with Israel have grown, culminating in June 2025 with an Israeli aerial assault on Iran. Supporters of the motion see Israel as an occupying power with undeclared nuclear weapons, systemic rights abuses, and disproportionate force - destabilising Gaza, Lebanon, and beyond. Opponents argue Iran fuels instability through proxy militias, nuclear ambitions, and revolutionary ideology, making Israeli strikes defensive rather than provocative. For over six centuries, the Ottoman Empire spanned Europe, Asia, and Africa, ruling diverse populations with cultural complexity and relative stability. Its dissolution after the First World War ended the Islamic Caliphate and redrew the Middle East and Balkans into fragile states, mandates, and authoritarian regimes. Supporters of its fall cite liberation, self-determination, and the rise of modern Turkey. Critics see a rupture that unleashed enduring instability. In today’s world, the choice for many nations is less about ideology than infrastructure. China is often seen as building quickly and without conditions: from highways, and ports to power grids. For developing economies, this support can be irresistible. By contrast, America’s aid is often tied to democratic reforms, human rights, and alignment with Western priorities - from IMF conditions to military partnerships. While Beijing paves roads, Washington shapes regimes. e global South must now ask: is development without democracy more dangerous, or simply more pragmatic?

Airstrikes make headlines, political rallies echo war cries - and India’s response to Pakistan grows ever more forceful. Defenders argue such actions address real threats, from cross-border terrorism to proxy con ict, deterring aggression and preserving stability. Critics counter that fear and nationalism are being in amed, with a populist playbook disguised as security policy. From surgical strikes to televised brinkmanship, is India safeguarding its national interest or exploiting it for political gain?
Week 7 - 27th November, 8.30pm
Speakers for this debate will be released at a later stage.

e September 11 attacks reshaped U.S. foreign policy and the 21st century. In response, Washington launched a global “War on Terror,” invading Afghanistan and Iraq, while expanding military bases, surveillance, and drone warfare. While framed as self-defence, critics argue these moves marked an opportunistic imperial expansion, costing civilian lives, liberties, and regional stability. Two decades on, the debate endures: were these measures proportionate responses to terror, or did 9/11 serve as a pretext for reasserting American dominance?

The Union is committed to giving members the opportunity to engage with and challenge its speakers. At our Thursday night debates, all members can make speeches at the ‘Emergency Debate’ held before the main motion. Members also have the chance to be chosen by the President to make floor speeches during the Main Debate. After the Main debate, Members can also stick around to debate the Motion in the proverbial ‘After-Debate’.
At our individual speaker or panel events, there is a section open to the audience in which any member can ask questions to our guests, a unique opportunity which we encourage all members to take advantage of.
Each term, elections are held for Officer and Committee positions on Friday of 7th Week. Keep an eye on our social media channels for help sessions run by our Returning Officer team – if you have any questions about running for election in the meantime, please email ro@oxford-union.org for more information.
A number of Committee positions are appointed, including Press, Sponsorship, and Equalities officers, and are a fantastic way for members to get involved in organising the
events they wish to see at the Union and the general running of the Society.
Applications for Hilary Term’s Senior Appointed officials will open in 3rd Week, whilst applications for Junior Appointed officials will open in 5th Week. These will be advertised on the Oxford Union’s social media pages and mailing list, with applications involving a written form followed by an interview. Please contact the President, Moosa Harraj, at president@ oxford-union.org for more information or if you have any questions.
The Oxford Union has a broad range of committees, designed to ensure good governance of the society, all of which are open to members to attend and observe.
The Committees section of this term card contains more information – if you are interested in attending or becoming a member of any of these Committees, email the relevant Committee Chair to find out more!
The President, Moosa Harraj, will be hosting weekly opening hours where members can come and ask any questions they may have.
Unless stated otherwise, these will run on Fridays at 3 PM, in the President’s Office.

Since the Union’s founding 200 years ago, it has served as a forum for the discussions that matter. Whilst Parliamentary-style debate can capture the imagination, it can at times overshadow topics where more intimate discussion is helpful. To that end, we have organised a range of special events in addition to our usual schedule of speakers and debates.
Each term we aim to host a diverse range of unique and in uential speakers across a variety of elds. At each of these events, you have the opportunity not just to hear from, but to ask your own questions to our speakers, and we hope you take this opportunity to use your voice to shape the conversation.
Our committee will be working hard throughout the term to add new speakers to this lineup. You can nd the latest updates on our social media channels, or mailing list (which you can join by emailing enquiries@oxford-union.org). You can also nd links to the weekly ballots for meet and greets with the speakers on our social media channels and mailing list.
Please note that one of the challenges in hosting high calibre speakers is that their schedules can change at short notice.
In the rare situation in which this occurs, we will do everything we can to rearrange the event for a di erent date, and to do our best to ensure members are given adequate notice of changes or cancellations.

In addition to our chamber debates, the Union has a proud tradition of competitive university debating in the British Parliamentary format, supported by one of the largest and most successful debating squads in the world. We run regular training sessions, and we fully fund teams of debaters to travel abroad for competitions. We welcome everyone to our events & social outings, whether you’re new or already experienced, and we’d be delighted to have you!
The Union’s competitive record speaks for itself, having won many past editions of the European and the World Championships in its history. We most recently triumphed at the 2024 World Championship in Vietnam and reached the grand final of the 2025 World Championship held in Panama. We also reached the Grand Finals of the European Championship in 2024 and 2025 in Glasgow and Copenhagen.
We sponsor members’ attendance at external tournaments, both domestic and international, on almost every weekend. Over the last year, Oxford teams reached over a dozen finals, and won several of them. These tournaments are a great opportunity to visit new places, as we fully fund the travel and participation costs of our teams. Our members recently got to visit Vietnam, Panama, Denmark, Bulgaria, Croatia, and many other exciting destinations!
During term time, we host regular practice workshops coached by some of Oxford’s best debaters. Join us for our Monday night Beginners’ workshops — they are standalone sessions and open to all! If you are experienced, sign up for our intermediate or advanced squads instead on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, where our coaches provide a one-on-one development programme.
Competitive debating will teach you many transferable skills. You’ll learn to articulate your ideas clearly and persuasively, to think on your feet, and to effectively communicate to an audience. You’ll gain a multifaceted understanding of the complex issues that the world faces today by attending our sessions. They are a welcoming space to discuss a wide variety of interesting topics with other Oxford students.

To sign up for the competitive debating mailing list with weekly updates, including information on tournaments, training and more, send a blank email to debateannouncesubscribe@maillist. com.
