DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

At its heart, Oxford is a products company – Oxford Products! The team develops its products in-house, increasingly through the use of Computer Aided Design. In order to maximise the benefits of CAD, the company has invested in the latest 3D print technology.

This means that a product or component designed today can be printed off overnight and tested tomorrow. The day after, our factory can be making the moulds and production can begin shortly after. In this way, product development time is dramatically reduced and the end result far more relevant and ambitious. Here is a typical design cycle for an Oxford product…

PRODUCT TESTING

ACCELERATED WEATHER TESTER

The machine reproduces damage caused by sunlight, rain and dew. In a few days/ weeks, the QUV UV tester can reproduce the damage that normally occurs over months or years outdoors. This allows us to select materials and finishes which will offer impressive longevity.

KEYSIGHT DIGITAL MULTIMETER

We have 2 industry-standard bench multimeters for electronic component design, programming and testing along with 2 portable multimeters for testing on the road.

In addition, we use a multi-channel thermocouple and a thermal imaging FLIR camera to measure and record the heat distribution and pattern. This is critical equipment in the design and continuous development of the HotGrip and battery management ranges.

Our products are rigorously tested for both real-world usability and relevant product standards in our test laboratory. Having this facility in-house enables us to develop products which are measurably better, faster. Some of our key testing equipment is outlined here.

Our Fuse 1+ printer produces high precision prototypes within 24 hours with a powerful 30W laser that prints at scan speeds of up to 12.5 meters per second.

FORM WASH & FORM CURE

Using the Form Wash, we remove residual resin from 3D printed parts. The Form Cure then exposes the part to multi-directional LEDs, curing and maximising the strength and performance of 3D printed prototypes.

PERSPIROMETER

We use our Perspirometer and Incubator to test for colour fastness and phenolic yellowing.

FORM 3+ 3D PRINTER

Our Form 3+ printer produces functional, high-quality resin prototypes and enduse parts in short time frames.

A powder recovery system for the Fuse 1+, allows for the recycling of leftover particles from printed prototypes, and re-use in future prints.

5,000KG TENSILE TESTING SYSTEM

Our Tensile Testing System allows us to test our samples with up to 5,000kg of controlled tension until the product fails. We can observe not only when failure occurs, but how it occurs and engineer the final product accordingly.

HYDROSTATIC HEAD TESTER

Using the Hydrostatic Head Tester, we are able to determine the resistance to water penetration under pressure.

SECURITY

Motorcycles are fundamentally more vulnerable to theft than most other forms of transport, but they need not be. The use of a good lock will protect a motorcycle against most forms of attack and reduce the theft rate dramatically. Incredibly, motorcycle security experts still believe that well over half of all motorcyclists use no form of physical security other than the steering lock, which itself offers very little resistance to a determined attack.

Furthermore, just like an alarm or an immobiliser, the steering lock does not prevent thieves from simply lifting the motorcycle into the back of a van and transporting it to a garage where they can re-mobilise the bike at their leisure.

These figures are supported by recent research carried out by Oxford Products Ltd in the UK’s capital London, the UK’s worst theft hotspot. A survey of 736 bikes revealed just 287 using locks, meaning that 61% of bikes were unsecured! If you want to keep your bike, the best advice is simple: Lock it up!

THE FACTS ABOUT THEFT

Motorcycle theft remains a huge problem, both in the UK and abroad. Every year thousands of motorcycles are stolen and motorcyclists are disappointed and inconvenienced as a result.

• It takes approximately 12 seconds to steal an unprotected motorcycle.

• Approximately 70 motorcycles are stolen every day in the UK and less than 14% of stolen motorcycles are recovered.

• Theft accounts for one third of insurance claims and 40% of owners who have their bike pinched give up on bikes.

UNBELIEVABLY...

• More than half of all motorcyclists neglect to use ANY form of motorcycle security!

According to police statistics, 50% of bikes are stolen by the opportunist or “Joy-rider”. Incredibly, they also estimate that 60% of riders do not lock their machines. Reduce the risk of theft by following these simple steps:

• Buy the best lock you can afford and always use it.

• Alarms can be very effective but only really effective when in conjunction with a lock.

• If you have a garage, always use it and remember to lock the bike and set the alarm - otherwise cover your bike when outside.

• When parking your bike try to avoid using the same spot every day and lock your bike to a secure immovable object, such as a ground anchor.

• Never leave your lock resting on the ground and always lock it as tight to your bike as possible - this makes it much more difficult to attack.

• Remember to maintain your lock. Keep it free from dirt and oil moving parts regularly. If your lock stops working, you won’t be able to use it!

8 STAGE AUTOMATIC CHARGING

1. POLARITY TEST:

Upon connection to the battery a polarity check is made to ensure that the polarity is correct. The digital (LCD) display will show a flashing battery warning sign if the connection polarity is incorrect.

2. ANALYSE:

The Oximiser will analyse the initial voltage to determine what charge rate should be applied to ensure a safe/efficient charge.

3. DESULFATION:

Repairs damaged batteries automatically during the charging profile, bringing them back to life (Not LiFePO4).(1250, 2000, 5000 MODELS ONLY)

4. SOFT START MODE:

To reduce shock to the battery the Oximiser will start by applying a low current, this is used to protect the battery and optimise the bulk charging.

5. BULK MODE:

Once safe to do so, the Oximiser will then supply a constant current of 5.0 Amps until the battery is 80-90% recharged.

6. ABSORPTION MODE:

The charge current will start to drop off when the charge program is nearing 80-90% complete, the charging Amps will continue to drop until the voltage of the battery has reached the desired completion voltage.

* Desulfation not available on Oximiser Pro 900

7. VOLTAGE CHECK:

After the charging program has been completed, the Oximiser will cut charge and observe the battery to ensure the voltage of the battery is stable.

8. MAINTAIN MODE:

This will be shown by a solid 100% charged diagram, the Amps will then drop to maintain a set float voltage.

OXIMISERS

THE IDIOT’S GUIDE TO THE OXFORD OXIMISER 3X AND OXIMISER 900

Attach to your battery and it will charge until the battery has reached full capacity and thereafter ensure that it is kept in tip-top condition. If the battery is deeply discharged it will recover it with a varying charge rate and then it never drops below the critical voltage level of 12.6V. The digital displays and battery level indicators keep you informed every step of the way. They are suitable for use on a variety of vehicle batteries - see guidance below.

NOTE: If a battery is left discharged for even a short period of time and remains under 11.9V, permanent damage will occur and even the smartest battery charging methods are unlikely to recover the battery to a useable condition.

The built-in controller allows the rider to effortlessly control the temperature of their HotGrips® without removing their hand from the grip.

HOTGRIPS PRO: 3.5 YEARS IN DEVELOPMENT, 35 YEARS IN THE MAKING

The latest evolution of Oxford’s vast HOTGRIPS® range is a fully integrated heated grip, which comes in 3 brand new grip patterns.

On a very practical level, these are our first fully silicone grips; this incredible material increases their lifespan by up to 200% without compromising comfort or performance, as well as reducing cable strain and increasing grip levels.

Moreover, there is also no separate switchgear to find space for and install, because each grip houses its own internal temperature control unit, operated by a power/temperature button with an LED light on the clutch-side grip.

To select a heat setting, simply press the button repeatedly until the LED displays the colour which corresponds to your choice. The LED will automatically dim to reduce distraction when riding at night.

On a more technical level, the intelligent controller will independently measure and control the temperature of each grip using inbuilt thermistors to maintain the desired temperature setting.

INTELLIGENT HEAT SETTING MEMORY

This innovative function stores the previous heat setting and defaults to this at power-up, saving time when in regular use.

RESPONSIVE HEAT SETTINGS

The thermistor reacts to temperature changes in the environment and adjusts the heat output accordingly, maintaining the selected temperature setting.

WATERPROOF DESIGN

Fully waterproof connectors and a fully integrated controller meet IP65 waterproof standards, ready for any riding environment.

Whatever temperature is chosen, the controller will supply maximum power until each grip has reached this temperature. Once reached, the controller will only top up as and when required to maintain this set temperature, making the grips easier to use and more energy efficient.

Here’s an everyday example of how independently temperature-controlled grips will make your riding more comfortable…

If you need to remove one hand while riding for any reason, the automatic temperature control will counteract the effect of windchill by sending power immediately to the affected grip. When you return your hand to the grip, rather than needing to warm back up, it will be just as warm as it was before.

HOTGRIPS PRO also have 2 Battery Saving Modes: a lead-acid mode and a lithium mode. Both read and monitor the motorcycle’s battery and will shut off automatically at the set voltage levels to protect the battery from draining.

BATTERY SAVING MODES

If you forget to turn the switch off, the HotGrips™ will do it for you, protecting against flat batteries. HotGrips® Pro also offers an additional battery saving mode for lithium batteries, now common on high-performance motorcycles (see instruction manual)

Rubber grips are positioned thoughtfully on the rider’s hips with the comfort of both rider and pillion in mind and have a generous aperture for large hands and padded gloves.

Two belts are used to secure the grips in place. The first is a hook & loop fastened anti-dive belt, which offers stability under braking. The second is held in place by a buckle, but all the acceleration load is taken up by the immensely strong main strap.

A sculpted, breathable, mesh backed pad at the front spreads any load taken up by the strap and its rubberised surface is friendly to the tank.

All load bearing points are flag-stitched for maximum strength and the thread used is marine-grade to prevent it rotting if left damp and in case it comes into contact with salt water.

Every component has been independently strength tested up to 180kg, which provides a comfortable margin for the 130kg rating deemed necessary for the product at the furthest possible extremes of usage.

Their extra strong, flat webbed design is easy to adjust to the desired length and the quick release mechanisms makes them simple to detach. The strap has an elasticated section which keeps the strap under constant tension providing a safer and more secure hold compared to regular solid straps.

MODULAR

MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is a load-bearing specification used in the Oxford NOMAD range.

This allows an unlimited number of attachments and accessories to be added and removed to the luggage system, in any combination, and secured in a way that is convenient to the user.

FIXTURES & FITTINGS

The classically styled, high-grade aluminium Roamer Top Box is available in 45l and 65l storage capacities. With sturdy grab rails and armoured corners this luggage is built for life on the road. Capable of holding one (45l) or two helmets (65l) within its lined interior, the Roamer benefits from a large, removable zipped mesh pocket within the lid to stow smaller items. Stretchy padded retention straps hold contents securely in place and an extensive range of Roamer Grab Bags and Roll Bags give plenty of additional storage options.

Attachment and quick and easy removal of the Roamer Top Box is achieved via a single anchor bolt that screws though the box into the universal-fit baseplate. Raised pegs on the rear of the Top Box slot into cut outs on the base plate to hold the Top Box securely in place. A nyloc nut is provided for those who wish to make the Top Box a more permanent fixture.
