With power out and freezing temperatures during the January ice storm, Judge Larry Little and his wife Debbie left to spend just one night at their son’s house who had a real fireplace. They left water dripping to keep pipes from freezing. “We just left the house for about 24 hours and we walked in, it was just water all over the bottom floor,” said Judge Little. Debbie added, “We were quite disappointed because we had prepared like a lot of people did.” They found that their home of 33 years had sustained water damage that made the home uninhabitable with two inches of water in their living room, foyer, kitchen and bedrooms. With their State Farm insurance agent’s recommendation, they contacted McCabe Restoration to assess the damage. Before the power was restored, Debbie recounted, “They came very quickly, which was such a comfort. We were standing in the front yard, and I said, ‘Where am I going to find a contractor to help put this thing together?’ Dustin said, ‘I’m your contractor.’ That was huge. It just gave us the sense that this is going to be all right because I’ve got somebody on my side and I’m not going to go have to enlist help. He was going to help,” said Debbie. Dustin at McCabe Restoration said that 80 percent of the home sustained water damage. By the time Dustin’s restoration crew arrived on Tuesday morning, there were one to two inches of standing water across about 80% of the house, affecting the master bedroom, master bath, living room, kitchen, dining room, foyer, and an upstairs bedroom and bathroom. Only two bedrooms in the entire house escaped damage. Dustin recalls. “The house still had no power, and with 14 July/August 2026

one to two inches of standing water throughout most of the home, the clock was ticking. In an uncontrolled environment, you have a very narrow window to remove that moisture before mold begins to develop.” Because the property still had no power, the crew brought in a large pull-behind trailer generator to run 40 high-velocity fans, eight commercial dehumidifiers, and air filtration systems. Dustin explained that the heavy equipment is a necessity, even if it feels overwhelming to a homeowner. “Homeowners are often surprised by the number of air movers and dehumidifiers needed after a major water loss. It may seem excessive, but when you have that much moisture in an uncontrolled environment, the conditions are ideal for mold growth. Structural drying is a science, and the goal is to remove moisture from the building materials completely so there are no hidden problems later.” The power stayed out in that neighborhood for about two weeks. By acting fast and running the generator, they kept moisture from trapping behind cabinets and walls, saving the insurance company tens of thousands of dollars in long-term mold remediation. To track the damage, Dustin’s team used digital moisture meters and a 3D mapping tool to take 360-degree scans before, during, and after the demo. Dustin noted that their main priority during this phase is simply keeping everyone on the same page: “One of our most important roles is bridging the information gap between the homeowner and the insurance company. Most homeowners have never dealt with a major insur-

ance claim, so we document every stage of the process and make sure everyone understands what is happening. Clear communication and thorough documentation are the keys to keeping a claim moving.”

Dustin’s top advice for avoiding a post-disaster headache: • The Annual Check-in: Sit down with your insurance agent every year to review what is covered and what is excluded. Cheaper isn’t always better. • Document Everything: Once a year, take your phone and snap photos or videos of every room, closet, and valuable item. If disaster strikes, it helps prove the value of your belongings and shows contractors exactly how to rebuild your custom trims or wallpaper. • Watch the Upgrades: If you’ve recently remodeled your kitchen or built a backyard “She-Shed,” make sure to increase your coverage limits to reflect today’s rising labor and material costs.

Packing up the house and moving the piano The project required a massive pack-out, utilizing 20 to 30 people at any given time. A demo crew of 10 to 12 guys tore out the wet sheetrock, trim, insulation, carpets, and ruined original hardwood floors, while a separate contents crew of 10 to 12 people packed up and stored about 70% of the family’s personal belongings. One of the trickiest items in the house was the family’s piano, which was sitting right in the flood zone. Dustin emphasized that unique items like this require specialized care: ““A piano has to be handled very differently from ordinary household contents. It cannot simply be wrapped, loaded onto a truck, and placed in storage. That is why we partner with specialty vendors such as Lane Music in Memphis. They know how to secure the keys and internal components, transport it properly, and store it in a controlled environment.” It took about three to four weeks to get the official repair approval from State Farm, which Dustin says is common for a major catastrophe event when local resources are stretched 16 July/August 2026

thin. The actual reconstruction work started around March 1st and took two months, meaning the Littles were displaced for about three and a half months total from start to finish. While insurance only pays to replace what was originally there with equal quality, the process requires decisions about what gets put back into the home.

Putting the pieces together “Larry and I have been in this house 33 years, and we were very happy with the way it was. I had to make decisions about new floors, new paint colors, and Dustin was very accommodating.” Dustin said “The Littles were absolutely wonderful to work with. I would not call the project a remodel because our responsibility was to restore what had been damaged, but the process gave them an opportunity to update and refresh portions of their home. They made their flooring, cabinet, and paint selections before reconstruction began, which helped us keep the project on schedule. “We take pride in being there from the initial emergency response through the final walk-through. Guiding a family through one of the most stressful events of their lives and then handing back a safe, dry, beautifully restored home where they can begin making new memories is what makes this work rewarding.”

What began as a centuries-old Chinese game has become one of Oxford’s fastest-growing social hobbies, bringing together neighbors, young professionals, retirees and even recent college graduates around colorful racks of tiles. Mahjong traces its roots to China in the mid-to-late 1800s, where it evolved from earlier card and tile games. While the game has developed many variations around the world, American Mahjong has become especially popular in the United States. Unlike traditional Chinese Mahjong, American Mahjong uses racks, jokers and an annually updated hands card published by the National Mah Jongg League, giving every player a fresh set of combinations to learn each year. The game’s recent surge in popularity took off during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were looking for ways to connect safely with others. That momentum has continued, and Oxford has embraced the trend with several groups meeting throughout the community. Among them is the OxMahjong Club, started by Alison McAvoy nearly two years ago. What began as a way to share her love of the game has grown into a welcoming group that regularly attracts both experienced players and complete beginners. McAvoy learned Chinese Mahjong as a child before being introduced to American Mahjong by a friend after moving to Oxford. She quickly realized there were few organized opportunities for people to learn the game locally. “So then I was like, ‘Okay, well, how do I get these really pretty tiles without breaking the bank?’” McAvoy said. “So I decided to do this as a side gig where I would teach people how to play.” Today, the club typically meets at Casa Mexicana at least once a month for open play, with additional games hosted in members’ homes. McAvoy also

teaches beginner lessons at Oxford Floral and occasionally hosts themed events around town. The gatherings have become more than just game nights. They offer a chance for people to unplug for a few hours and spend time together. “It makes you think,” McAvoy said. “I love games that make you think, and it’s also a strategy game. You get to sit around a table and talk to your friends. It gets you away from your house for a couple hours to relax.” While Mahjong has long been associated with older generations, Oxford’s players say the game appeals to a much wider audience. Many participants are young professionals and mothers who fit games into their busy schedules, while others are retirees looking to stay mentally active. Leslie Coleman joined the game after knee surgery forced her to take a break from pickleball and tennis. “I no longer had an excuse not to learn to play Mahjong,” Coleman said. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Now she plays about three times each week. For Deborah Strickland, the appeal is just as simple. “It’s good for keeping your brain active,” she said. The social side of the game is equally important to MiHyang Faulks, who helped introduce many local players to American Mahjong after moving to Oxford three years ago. Faulks transformed her sunroom into a dedicated Mahjong space where friends regularly gather to play between school drop-offs and other daily responsibilities. “I just want to see their pretty faces,” she said. “I want them to come enjoy.” Oxford now has several Mahjong groups that meet throughout the week, including gatherings at OxfordMag.com 19

private homes, the Country Club of Oxford, Goose Creek Tennis Club and local businesses. While there is no single website listing every event, players often move between groups depending on their schedules. One reason for Mahjong’s broad appeal is that it can be adapted for different group sizes. Although four players is ideal, games can also be played with two or three players. The version most Oxford groups play follows the National Mah Jongg League card, which changes each year and introduces new winning hands for players to master. That annual reset is one of the features McAvoy enjoys most. “Everyone kind of starts again at zero,” she said. “It’s a level playing field every year.”

The game’s growing popularity has also inspired local creativity. For recent University of Mississippi graduate Ellen Maturin, Mahjong became the unexpected foundation for a new business. Maturin, who earned a degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in manufacturing this spring, never intended to become a tile designer. The idea began as a Christmas gift for her mother, who had recently fallen in love with Mahjong. “It was never meant to turn into a business,” Maturin said. “That just started out by making a gift for my mom, and it developed into more from there.” After experimenting with several methods of manufacturing tiles, she shifted her attention to digital artwork.

Combining self-taught illustration skills with techniques she learned through Ole Miss’ Center for Manufacturing Excellence, she created an original collection from the ground up. When the first sample arrived, she realized she had created something special. “I was like, ‘Wait, these are really good,’” she said. “That moment was kind of when I was like, ‘I think I could turn this into a business.’” Her first release, the Grove Collection, draws inspiration from Oxford and the University of Mississippi. The artwork features familiar campus traditions and landmarks, including a Grove squirrel serving as the joker tile and illustrations inspired by friends and college memories. Maturin hopes her business, Marelle Mahjong, will make premium Mahjong sets more affordable for younger players while helping introduce more people to the game. “The game means a lot to me now because it can connect women from all generations,” she said. “I’ve sat down and played with a group of 80-year-old women and just had fun. you to connect with people of all ages and all walks of life.” Although Maturin now lives in North Carolina, she plans to launch her business in early August, with a limited number of tile sets available on her website, www.marellemahjong.com, and at special pop-up events at Oxford Floral. Whether players are gathering around a dining room table, a restaurant patio or even a floating mat in a swimming pool, Mahjong has become more than just a game in Oxford. It is creating new friendships, encouraging conversation and giving people of every age another reason to spend time together, one tile at a time. Keeping Mississippi Music Moving Forward

When Kody Shade Harrell first moved to Oxford to attend college in 2010, earning a degree was only part of the plan. Before long, another education began to unfold - one that couldn’t be found in a classroom. Night after night, Kody gravitated toward venues like Proud Larry’s and The Lyric, where nationally known artists shared the stage with North Mississippi musicians carrying on one of America’s most distinctive musical traditions. Watching performances by the North Mississippi Allstars, Kenny Brown and others introduced him to a style of music that would come to define his career. Looking back, those evenings in Oxford proved far more influential than he ever expected. Today, those same venues have become places where Harrell returns as a performer instead of a fan. “It’s kind of a full-circle moment,” he said of opening for the North Mississippi Allstars at The Lyric, the same stage where he watched the band years earlier while imagining what life as a professional musician might look like. That recent performance, along with opening for Hill Country blues guitarist Kenny Brown 30 July/August 2026

at Proud Larry’s, ranks among the most meaningful milestones of his career. For Harrell, Oxford isn’t simply another stop on a touring schedule. It’s the city where a lifelong passion found direction and where the encouragement of a thriving arts community helped transform ambition into reality. Carrying Mississippi Music Forward Kody describes his music as “modern Mississippi music,” a phrase borrowed from longtime mentor Luther Dickinson. Rather than treating blues as a museum piece, he believes the state’s musical traditions should continue to evolve while remaining rooted in the sounds that made them enduring in the first place. That philosophy is evident in both his playing and songwriting. Performing as a duo with talented drummer Bryan Shaw, Kody’s fingerstyle guitar technique allows him to cover rhythm, bass and lead parts simultaneously, creating the fullness of a much larger band. The result blends Hill Country blues with rock with contempo-

rary songwriting - music that acknowledges Mississippi’s past while refusing to be confined by it. His approach grew out of years spent studying musicians who helped shape North Mississippi’s musical identity. As a self-taught guitarist, he immersed himself in recordings and videos of Luther Dickinson, R.L. Burnside and Kenny Brown before unexpected opportunities placed him alongside many of the very musicians he admired. What began with an unexpected performance alongside Duwayne Burnside eventually led to mentorships, studio work, touring opportunities and production roles connected to Grammy-nominated projects. Those experiences remain an important part of his musical foundation, but Kody has become increasingly focused on developing an artistic voice that’s unmistakably his own.

A Year of Momentum Since the release of his first single, Harrell’s solo career has continued to gain traction. His latest release, Blues Luxury, has received radio airplay across the United States while also reaching listeners in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Australia. The growing exposure - assisted in part by Memphis-based promoters Blind Raccoon - has generated interview requests, enthusiastic feedback from radio programmers and increasing merchandise sales, providing encouraging signs that his music is connecting with audiences well beyond Mississippi. Perhaps even more rewarding has been watching the music resonate with live audiences. At this year’s North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, Harrell and drummer Shaw gave the title track a test run and

opened their set with “Blues Luxury,” which quickly drew listeners into the performance. Experiences like that have reinforced his confidence as he continues releasing new music one song at a time rather than waiting to unveil a complete album. While continuing to perform with Grammy-nominated blues artist Cedric Burnside, Shade has steadily expanded his own touring schedule, balancing the responsibilities of a sideman with the growing demands of building a solo career. That combination has allowed him to perform before larger audiences while continuing to develop material under his own name. It’s a balancing act that has accelerated his artistic growth without losing sight of the musical traditions that first inspired him. Why Oxford Still Matters Despite performances throughout North America and Europe, Oxford remains one of the places Kody looks forward to playing most. Besides being so close to home in Sardis, part of that comes from the city’s unique appreciation for live music. Unlike many college towns where audiences change a lot from year to year, Oxford has developed a community of artists

and music lovers who consistently support original performers. Kody says one of the most rewarding parts of playing locally is recognizing familiar faces in the crowd. Whether performing at Proud Larry’s or Rhythm & Rye, he has found an audience that doesn’t simply attend concerts - it actively supports musicians over the long term. That has given him a valuable place to test new songs and continue growing as an artist. He credits Oxford’s broader commitment to arts and culture for helping shape not only his own career, but the experiences of countless musicians who have passed through the city. For Harrell, these opportunities have come to define much of his professional life. Opportunities like filming a video for “Blues Deluxe” recently with the University of Mississippi Department of Theater and Film, at local music venues including Proud Larry’s and The Powerhouse, where the video also premiered. As more singles continue rolling out and more live shows take him to new audiences, Oxford remains an important anchor for Harrell, and It’s also where the idea of “modern Mississippi music” feels right at home.

RYAN YATES The team at Oxford’s Baptist Cancer Center shows up every day with compassion, collaboration, and commitment so that each patient receives personalized care close to home. From diagnosis through survivorship, it’s the teamwork behind the scenes that makes the biggest difference. The cancer center at 504 Azalea Drive is continuing to grow, said Regional Oncology Director Vicki Ferguson. The center includes three oncologists, two radiation oncologists and two nurse practitioners as well as other medical and administrative staff. “We will also be welcoming a new oncologist in October,” she said. Dr. Ryan Yates, who specializes in both hematology and oncology, calls the Oxford facility a “one-stop shop” for patients. “One of the things that sets us apart from other surrounding cancer centers is that we are a one-stop shop for the majority of our patients,” he said. “We provide imaging services, lab services, office appointments, infusion/treatment services, and radiation services all under one roof. We take pride in providing evidence-based, compassionate, patient-centered care.”

Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center has built its reputation on treating everything from weekend warriors to collegiate athletes, but this year the Oxford community recognized the practice for much more than its medical expertise. The physician-led network earned top honors in eight categories, including Best Medical Clinic, Best Orthopedics Clinic, Best Pain Management and Best Physical Therapy, while several team members were recognized individually for their contributions. The honors included Best Office Manager for CEO Dorothy McClure, Best Physician Assistant for Anna Burns, Best Nurse Practitioner for Julie Edwards and Best Orthopedic Surgeon for Dr. Kurre Luber. The Oxford practice was founded by Dr. Cooper Terry in 1997 as Oxford Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Today, as part of Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, the statewide network includes 32 specialty and fellowship-trained physicians, 33 advanced practice providers, 15 clinic and urgent care locations, and more than 600 employees. While the organization has grown, its Oxford team continues to provide the hometown care patients have come to expect. McClure said the breadth of the awards made the recognition especially meaningful.

“Great patient care is never the work of just one person,” she said. “These awards reflect the dedication of our entire Oxford team, from our physicians and clinical providers to our therapists, office leadership, and support staff. We are incredibly proud of them and grateful to the Oxford community for recognizing the care they provide each day.” For Luber, who has practiced in Oxford for nearly two decades and spent 15 years serving as team orthopedic surgeon for Ole Miss Athletics, the honor belongs to the community that has supported him throughout his career. “This award really belongs to Oxford,” Luber said. “I’ve had the privilege of practicing here for almost 20 years, 15 years on the sideline with Ole Miss Athletics serving as the team orthopedic surgeon, and time spent caring for Oxford School District personnel and student-athletes. Every year I’m reminded that this community is what makes that work meaningful. I get to work with a phenomenal team at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, and none of this happens without them. I’m deeply grateful, and I don’t take it for granted.”

Since opening its doors in 2004, Coleman Funeral Home has been dedicated to serving families during some of life’s most difficult moments. Recently named Best of Oxford’s Best Funeral Home, owner Glenn Coleman said the award reflects the trust his team has built within the Oxford community over the years. As an Oxford native, he said the recognition is especially meaningful. “In some small way, I equate it to somebody coming up to me and saying, ‘Hey, good job,’” Coleman said. “It shows the trust our families have in us and the admiration they have for our staff through serving their families during their time of need. That’s one of the biggest compliments you can have.” In addition to owning Coleman Funeral Home, Coleman serves as the coroner for Oxford and Lafayette County, continuing a career centered on serving others. Although the funeral home has expanded to Olive Branch and Southaven, he said the mission remains unchanged: helping families through some of life’s most difficult moments. Coleman said he hopes to build the same relationships and trust in those communities that he has found in Oxford. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Coleman said. “That’s the simplest way to put it. Castle Hill of Oxford, an antebellum-style property that has become one of the city’s leading event spaces, has been named Best Wedding Venue in Best of Oxford. For owner Jean Abrams, the recognition is a testament to her team’s dedication to creating an experience for couples rather than simply serving as an event venue. Originally built as a guest house after Jean and Randy Abrams moved to Oxford in 1999, Castle Hill evolved into an event space when it hosted

its first wedding in the summer of 2003. As Oxford’s first dedicated wedding venue, Castle Hill has since expanded and hosted more than 750 weddings and events. Abrams said the award reaffirmed that her team’s attention to detail and commitment to customer service are valued by the Oxford community. “It just inspires us to keep raising the bar for the people who matter most to us, our clients,” Abrams said. “For us, this is not just an award.
