No Off Weeks Cutcliffe & Chargers Looking Forward to New Challenge By Ian Sparks

xford heads into the 2025 season with a new but welcomed challenge as they shift into Region 2 in 7A. The Chargers will now face perennial powerhouses like Starkville, Madison Central, and Germantown among a gauntlet of other divisional opponents. “We’re excited to be moving into Region 2,” head coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “It’s the most competitive, most difficult region in the state and we’re excited about that challenge.” Oxford is replacing reigning 7A state champions Tupelo in Region 2 with the Golden Wave taking Oxford’s spot in Region 1. Cutcliffe, entering his 10th season at the helm, knows there is little room for error in a region as tough as this. “We know that you have to play at an extremely high level every week,” Cutcliffe said. “There’s no off weeks in that region. The line between being really good and missing the playoffs is razor thin.” The Chargers set list for the 2025 season includes a rematch with Germantown. The two teams met in the first round of the playoffs in 2024 with the Mavericks winning a close one 43-34. Oxford will make multiple trips to the state capitol as they hit the road for matchups against Madison Central, Clinton and Murrah. Three out of their five district games will be

away from Bobby Holcomb Field as they will host just four out of 10 games in Oxford this season. On top of a very tough schedule, the Chargers will be looking to fill the shoes of Levi Blount, their leading pass catcher from a season ago as he is now at Ole Miss following graduation. Blount hauled in a school-record 74 receptions for 980 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior season. On top of that, three members of the secondary from 2024 are now playing college football—including Ja’Lyen Judson who is entering his freshman season at UAB. Despite this, Cutcliffe isn’t worried about there being a drop in quality at these spots. It’s quite the opposite, actually. “We’ve got several guys who are returning that have gotten some sort of All-district/ region/state recognition throughout their career,” Cutcliffe said. “We expect them to take another step forward as a senior and play at a really high level.” Some of the names he mentioned included defensive back Collin Flanigan, wide receiver Kingston Gregory, offensive linemen Elliott Chaney and Malcom Burnett, defensive lineman Tebo Coleman and linebacker-turned-running back Demaire Frierson. Junior quarterback Drew Dean returns behind center for the Chargers. Dean’s role will be more than just slinging the ball to Gregory and Co., but also as a mentor to a familiar name. Knox Kiffin, son of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, transferred to Oxford at the beginning of June and spent the summer working out with Dean and the rest of the team. “He had an excellent summer,” Cutcliffe said. “He’s been a hard worker, a great teammate. Drew is back, him and Knox are great friends and they both have had a tremendous summer.” 2025 Football Preview

Players To Watch Frierson Making Switch to Running Back Demaire Frierson spent his first three seasons on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. Entering his final year at Oxford, he’ll be taking his snaps on the opposite side of the ball at running back. Frierson made the switch over to running back in April and has high expectations in his first year at the position. “I really want a lot of yards,” Frierson said. “I’ve got my goal at 800 for right now, but if I can get more, I’ll get more.”

Players To Watch Chaney Leading Chargers Line Elliot Chaney enters his final season ready to play any position across the offensive line. Chaney, a current South Alabama commit, is slated to start at tackle this season but has shown he can play any position across the line. He will anchor the offensive line alongside senior center Malcom Burnett. “Last year, I played every position,” Chaney said. “I played center a few games while Malcom (Burnett) was out. I played a good bit of guard and tackle. Wherever I need to be, I’ll play.” got my goal at 800 for right now, but if I can get more, I’ll get more.”

Burnett Eager to Show Skills In order for any team to be successful, it is key to win the battle in the trenches. Senior center Malcom Burnett is well aware of the importance of having a good offensive line - and it all starts with a good center. The 6’1, 340-pound lineman is looking forward to the season ahead and a chance to exhibit the results of hard work and techniques honed in the offseason. “I’d say I’m ready to showcase my skills,” Burnett said. “Over the spring, going against Tebo (Coleman) and them just made me better.”

Coleman Has Eyes on Sack Record Senior defensive lineman Teborse “Tebo” Coleman has been a unit for the Chargers defensive front. He led Oxford in tackles for loss last season with five along with 1.5 sacks and nine quarterback hurries. Similarly to his offensive counterpart Elliot Chaney, Coleman can play all across the line but prefers to play on the interior with a zeal for causing disruption up front. “I love messing up plays before they start,” Coleman said. “I like getting in their chest and getting to the backfield. I really want that sack record.”

‘Let’s Show What We’re About’ Chargers’ Corner Believes in Brotherhood By Ian Sparks Collin Flanigan has been around an SEC environment all his prep athletic career. His father, Wes Flanigan, is an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Chris Beard and has held that role since 2023. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Auburn and Mississippi State. Collin’s brother, Allen, played under their father at both Auburn and Ole Miss. With Collin being a Vanderbilt commit, it’s safe to say he knows how much of a grind playing in the SEC will be. “It’s the toughest conference in the country,” Flanigan said. “I know I’m going to be able to go there and work. I really like the coaches a

Featured lot and I’m excited to be there.” Before he gets to Nashville, he has one more step to climb - his Oxford High senior season. Flanigan returns to the Chargers’ secondary with high expectations after leading the team in interceptions last season. And with Oxford losing three key members of their secondary to college football, Flanigan will step into a leadership role this season. “I’m just looking forward to getting on the field and seeing us work together,” Flanigan said. “I feel like we have a great brotherhood here and I think we’re going to be really good once we put pads on and get out there.” With Oxford making the move into Region 2 in 7A, the Chargers will face a very tough schedule featuring Tupelo, Madison Central, Germantown and Starkville. Flanigan is confident that his squad will be ready for the season, and that includes making a playoff run, despite the daunting schedule. “We’re really trying to make a statement,” Flanigan stated. “We’re not really into all the rankings but we’ve seen the doubt people have about us, so we’re just coming to show everybody what we’re about.”

Gregory Poised for Breakout Season 1,000 Yard Goal Not Out of Reach By Ian Sparks Oxford lost its best pass catcher from 2024 with the graduation of Levi Blount in the spring, but his school-record 74 receptions (980 yards , 11 TDs) in his senior season, may not be out of reach for another Chargers star this year. Featured after a junior campaign that put him right behind Blount in terms of numbers. In 2024, Gregory was second in receiving yards per game (37.5) and second in total receiving touchdowns (6). When asked about his goals for his senior year, Gregory responded with high expectations. “As a receiver, I’d like to go for 1,000 receiving yards,” Gregory said. “A thousand yards and 10 or 12 touchdowns would be a good year.” Gregory is not just an offensive weapon, though. He will see snaps on both sides of the ball, similarly to how he did last season. “As a DB, I’d say not to have any touchdowns allowed would be my goal,” Gregory stated. “Playing DB is harder than playing receiver because you’re doing everything backwards, so we’ll see if I can get that.” Looking at this season, Gregory expressed his excitement about the year ahead following great spring and summer workouts. With Oxford moving into Region 2, the gauntlet of opponents the Chargers will face is daunting. Gregory and his teammates are determined to prove themselves and put the region and the rest of the state on notice. “I feel like this is one of the better teams I’ve played on while I’ve been here,” Gregory said. “I’m excited to see how we come together and get to play against people other than each other. We did well in seven on seven, but you don’t get banners for that.” An Old Dominion commit since April 2025, Gregory has garnered attention from various schools across the state. His offer sheet includes Jackson State, Northwest MS CC, Northeast CC and Hinds CC. However, Gregory is eager to get to Norfolk and prove himself as a true freshman. “All the coaches, everybody on the defensive staff are really cool,” Gregory said. “I’m ready to get there and the chance to possibly play as a freshman is exciting.”

Bounce Back Season For Commodores Coach Hart expecting return of winning season By Ian Sparks

he Lafayette Commodores begin their 2025 season looking to bounce back after a tough 2024 campaign. The Commodores are led by head coach Anthony Hart who is entering his 10th total season with the program. Hart coached at Lafayette

from 2005-2011 and won back-to-back 4A state championships in 2010 and 2011. Following stints at Franklin County and Madison Central, Hart returned to Lafayette County in 2023 and reassumed his former position. Lafayette has been dominant under Hart in his tenure. In their two championship seasons, the Commodores outscored opponents 1,316-293. Hart became the first coach in Mississippi high school football history to lead his team to a perfect 16-0 record. Looking at this season, Hart is looking forward to getting his team back on the field and going head-to-head with opposition that isn’t themselves. “I’m really looking forward to just getting our kids back on the field,” Hart said. “Last year was a little tough on us and so we’re just ready for the opportunity to get better as a football team.” Hart and his staff have put a major emphasis on the ground game this season. Multiple players will get multiple touches out of the backfield to keep the running back room fresh and unpredictable. “We have three really good running backs,” Hart stated. “Kamaron Pritchard, Justice Vaughn, and Lil Willis Hooper. Additionally, we’ve got Adarius Brown, Luke Anderson, Corey Howell and then McLain Corban who all are really good options there.” Additionally to being tough on the ground, Hart said they really want to be better on the defensive side of the ball. He noted that there have been stylistic changes on both sides of the ball but his players have shown a willingness to learn. “We’ve had multiple scheme changes on both sides of the ball,” Hart said. “But, it’s been really fun seeing them work really hard day in and day out. The kids bought in and that has made it really fun.” 16

#3 Adarius Brown

Adarius Brown Has Set High Marks By Ian Sparks Adarius Brown is a safety by trade but a ballplayer by nature. Despite him being profiled as a defensive back, the skills Brown possesses propel him to being a danger at any position he takes up.

“My main position is safety but I can play anything,” Brown said. “If it’s on defense I’ll be at safety but I love to have the ball in my hand. If I’m at the slot or at running back, I’ll make something shake.” Brown even saw time at quarterback last year, but with sophomore John Colt Robertson solidifying his spot as the signal caller it looks unlikely Brown will see any time there this year. However, it is expected that Brown will see lots of snaps on both sides of the football at a variety of different positions. Similarly to his teammate Tyler Wiley, there is one matchup on the Commodores’ schedule that sticks out to him. “The Crosstown Classic is a big one for sure,” Brown stated. “I like playing against Columbus too because I feel like I always play well against them, but I’m really looking forward to playing Oxford.” In his senior season, Brown is looking to

put the rest of the state on notice with his play. As a junior, he racked up 364 all-purpose yards with 318 being on the ground. He was second for the Commodores in rushing yards and first on the team in rushing touchdowns with five. As for this year, Brown’s goals for himself are high. “Playing receiver and running back, I’d like to get a thousand yards,” Brown stated. Brown’s prowess as a playmaker is evident, but his maturation as a player has been helped by his coach, Anthony Hart. While he might make an impact in between the lines, his mentor on the other side keeps Brown and his teammates sharp. “He’s a really great guy,” Brown said. “He’s not the type of coach to yell at you just to yell at you. He’s definitely going to get his point across, but he coaches you and makes sure you understand. I really like that about him.”

#90 Tyler Wiley A Commodore With Passion Wiley Eager to Begin Final Chapter By Ian Sparks Tyler Wiley’s senior season marks his third year as a member of the Lafayette Commodores and his second as a starter. In his three years at Lafayette, the ‘Dores have seen ups and downs but Wiley’s passion for the game of football has remained constant. “I’m just excited to get back on the field,” Wiley said. “It feels like it’s been forever since we got to play together and we’re all ready to get back on the field and compete and win together.” Coming into the season, Wiley expressed that the spring and summer workouts have helped him and his teammates massively before they begin a gritty campaign in Region 1 of 5A. “Absolutely, the spring and summer were great,” Wiley said. “I genuinely believe that each of us got better every single day. Whatever it was, we got better at. Summer made a big difference, for sure.” Lafayette began their season at home against Wooddale (Memphis) on August 29.

Some notable games include the Crosstown Classic against Oxford, at West Point, home against Columbus and away at Pontotoc. The Commodores play all five non-district games in the first five weeks of the season before getting into district play. For Wiley, he notes that being an Oxford native always makes one game in particular one to look out for. “Just being from here, it’s definitely against Oxford,” Wiley stated. “I love playing really anybody close like Pontotoc or West Point, but playing Oxford is just a different level of excitement.” The 6’4 lineman plays both sides of the ball with the majority of his snaps coming from left tackle as well as defensive end. For Wiley, his desire to win and willingness to do whatever it takes to do that is what sets him apart. “I just want to do whatever it takes to help my team win,” Wiley said. “Winning is in my nature. I’m a competitive guy.”
