OXFORD HIGH CHARGERS
Restocked, reloaded for 2026 Chargers ready for another 7A run
By Jared Redding Last season, the Oxford Chargers went a perfect 7-0 in what is widely regarded to be the toughest region in all of Mississippi high school football, regardless of classification. In the end, however, they ultimately fell a game and a point short of playing for all the marbles. In 2026, the Chargers aren’t looking to reinvent the wheel, but rather keep the pure formula that has been a constant over the last decade-plus. “There’s so many variables that go into a football season, a lot of things you can’t control. But I thought last year’s team did a really good job of preparing for the things that we had control over,” OHS head football coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “We faced some significant injuries, some difficult moments in games by getting behind. But we had a lot of confidence in our preparation that allowed guys to play with confidence and not get rattled or shaken by some of those things that could be setbacks along the way.” Now comes a challenge of replacing what was left in 2025. In the aftermath, Oxford lost its top two quarterbacks, top three receivers, four starters on the offensive line and three starters on the defensive line. The solution was to integrate more seniors into the mix and plug in some new faces as well. At quarterback, the Chargers added junior Memphis University School transfer Price Renovich to take over the starting role. The 6’1, 205-pounder dealt with injury previously, but completed 57 percent of his passes for 755 yards and threw eight touchdown passes along with his 280 yards rushing and two more scores with the Owls. “(Price) has adjusted really well to the school, the team and the
program,” Cutcliffe said. “I was pleased with how he performed in our spring game. He was put in a tough spot right off the bat (at West Point). It was a great opportunity for him and he did really well. He’s accurate, decisive and smart. He can make plays with his legs. He brings a lot of athleticism to the table as a quarterback.” Junior running back Demar Jamerson is no longer under the radar in 2026, after bursting onto the scene last season. The physical 6’0, 230-pounder carried the ball 162 times for 855 yards and scored 15 TDs on the ground a season ago. He’ll have some help this time around, including returning senior Xaiden Smith. Out wide, Renovich will be throwing to another program newcomer in senior Parklane Academy transfer Davis Carruth (6’2, 185 pounds), returning veteran DJ Stribling (5’9, 165 pounds) and 6’4, 180-pound sophomore Jayjay Hervey, who scored a pair of touchdowns in the aforementioned spring game in May. At tight end, seniors Grayson Bettis and Noah Barr return to compliment things both on the ground and in the passing game. Ford Wade returns to anchor the offensive line as a soon-to-be fouryear starter, but the remaining four starting spots could also belong to seniors, at least for now until a cohesive unit is found. On defense, the Chargers are anchored on the back end by seniors London Gregory and Wes Gaia, as well as leading tackler Weldon Wilkinson after a breakout sophomore campaign at linebacker. Players like Dallas Ruffin and Dennis Allison are part of a fierce competition at corner while the defensive line features four-star recruit Drae Maddox (6’6, 300 pounds), Mike Williams, Jamiiz Hall and JZ Williams. Senior Hud Clark will also be called upon in the heart of the defense.

Gregory looking to display family’s talent
By Jared Redding Since 2020, there has been at least one Gregory last name on Oxford’s football roster. All of them, including current senior safety London Gregory have come from the family of Romalas and Lolita Gregory. London and his older brothers Roman and Kingston Gregory have all contributed heavily to the success of Oxford’s football program in different ways. Roman was a dynamic all-purpose back and returner on special teams from the 2020-2022 seasons who went on to play at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Kingston was a dangerous pass-catcher, special teams weapon and a safety valve in the back end on defense when called upon from 2023-2025 en route to his first season at Old Dominion this year. “Being able to watch them play, it motivated me to want to be better than them obviously, but I feel like when they had their time, they always did good things,” London said. The youngest, the aforementioned London Gregory, is a reliable defensive stopper in the back end and according to head coach Chris Cutcliffe, is one of the best defensive communicators he’s ever coached. Interestingly, football wasn’t always the unanimous sport in the Gregory household according to London. “I actually like playing baseball at first. Kingston was more of a basketball guy so we all liked playing different sports. Roman was always a football guy, so he basically forced us to come outside and play with him, so I guess we all fell in love with football,” London said of his childhood. “Roman was always outside playing football. Kingston was out there too and they basically dragged me out there… Kingston and I always went at it. Roman was kind of the mediator.” There were always times where their mother Lolita had to step in as a 6 2026
part-time referee of sorts in the yard when things got tense, while their father encouraged them to play with the grit that they all exhibit today. As time went on as high schoolers, they also had to learn to be teammates on top of being brothers. “Our relationship on and off the field had to be a little different,” London said. “On the field, we had to communicate a little more. We always talked off the field, but it had to be different. If he did something wrong on the field, I had to be able to tell him. If I did something wrong, he had to tell me.” Funny enough, his oldest brother Roman will share the same field and facilities as him as a newly hired assistant coach on Cutcliffe’s staff to help with the running back group. Of course, there were times as an offensive and defensive player where London and Kingston had to go at it on the practice field. “We went at it a couple times and I always won, so,” London said laughing. “I always was a corner, but I was seen as a bigger corner so I thought I would be a better safety. I knew some about wide receiver but I never really liked it like a safety.” As a junior this past season, London tallied 50 tackles, an interception and forced three fumbles in 10 games, having missed the middle chunk of the season during to an MCL and PCL injury in his left leg. London anchors a 2026 Oxford defense that boasts experience in the back end and has some significant production returning from a year ago. But as last year showed with injuries to himself and fellow safety Wes Gaia, someone will have to step up at any given moment. London’s gift of communication and football IQ should serve as a valuable asset. “I always try to communicate with everyone else because I understand the game a little faster. If I’m understanding it, I can explain it to someone else and get them to understand it the way I do,” London said. “This year we have guys that are ready to prove themselves. Wes was having an amazing year before he went down and KJ when he got his chance flashed. The two corners had time last year. This group has a chance to be one of the better ones in recent years.”
his senior year, fulfilling a dream he says has been there almost as long as he can remember. “Since I can remember when I could walk, I’ve always wanted to play football at Ole Miss,” Wade said. That doesn’t mean his recruitment was predetermined. For a while, Wade thought North Carolina State might be his destination. Then came the Ole Miss offer about a month before he planned to make his decision. Ole Miss wanted Wade, and Wade had always wanted Ole Miss. “Obviously, a dream come true,” he said. It is an ending — or really a beginning — that might have been difficult to predict when Wade arrived at Oxford as a sixth grader. Before that, he attended Regents School of Oxford, an experience Wade credits with helping form his Christian faith and giving him a foundation that remains important to him.
Ford Wade didn’t miss the bus , and the ride is just beginning
Coming to Oxford meant a new school and new friends. COVID interrupted his first year, and Wade eventually repeated a grade and found himself with another new group of classmates. Sports helped. He played football, basketball and baseball, although baseball was the sport most people associated with the big kid who could hit a ball a long way. That changed in the seventh grade. Wade remembers coaches putting him at linebacker and defensive end in those first practices for a simple reason. He was the biggest kid.
By Jeremy Weldon
By his freshman year, Wade was starting on the Oxford offensive line and college coaches were noticing. Nebraska became his first scholarship offer.
Ford Wade almost missed the bus. Not figuratively. He actually missed the bus. It was near the end of Wade’s sixth-grade year at Oxford when the middle school football coaches came to pick up prospective players for an interest meeting. Wade, who had always considered himself a baseball player, missed the bus carrying the football players. For a moment, he wondered if somebody might be trying to tell him something. “I was like, ‘Oh, maybe this is my sign not to play football because I’d always played baseball,’” Wade remembered. Fortunately, there was another bus. Wade didn’t know it was coming, but he climbed aboard when it did.
That was when Wade began to understand that the sport he almost didn’t get on the bus to play might someday pay for his college education. “Then it kind of hit me that I was going to play football in college,” Wade said. Football may be taking Ford places, but his story is as much about family as recruiting rankings and scholarship offers. His father, Chip, played baseball at Georgia and in the Minnesota Twins organization along with coaching stints at the collegiate and professional levels. His mother, Allison, played tennis at North Alabama. Ford grew up playing baseball with his dad as his coach, so much so that the distinction between “Dad” and “Coach” sometimes became blurred. That explains something people occasionally notice about Ford. He calls his father Chip.
“I’m glad I got on the second bus,” he said.

School as one of the state’s top offensive linemen and an Ole Miss commitment. And the kid who once wondered whether he was even supposed to play football now knows exactly where the game is taking him. Just down the road. Wade will trade Oxford High blue and gold for Ole Miss red and blue after
“I always thought of him as a dad, but also as a coach,” Ford said. The lessons were about more than hitting a baseball. Ford said his father taught him early that individual success means little if the team loses. That philosophy fits particularly well on an offensive line, where five players

OXFORD HIGH CHARGERS must operate almost as one. “In football, if one person messes up, it hurts the entire team,” Ford said. “Especially offensive line, we’re all five working together.” Winning together, he said, is better than anything he might accomplish individually. “At the end of the day, if the team doesn’t win, then you didn’t win.” His mother has provided another example. Ford describes Allison as one of his biggest supporters. Her college tennis background means she understands competition, preparation and the demands athletics can place on a young person. “My mom is amazing,” he said. “She’s always been there for me.” She might not know football quite as well as she knows some other sports, Ford joked, but that has never affected the support. “She’s always going to support me,” he said. There is another Wade coming along, too. Ford’s younger brother, Gibby, is a freshman who was one of three freshmen pulled up to work with Oxford’s varsity during the spring. Ford plays tackle. Gibby plays guard. For the older brother, one of the most anticipated parts of his senior season isn’t connected to college recruiting at all. He wants to play a game beside his little brother in an Oxford uniform. “That’s my biggest goal, is to get to play a game with my brother as an Oxford Charger,” Ford said. Ask Ford what he does away from football and the answers sound like those of plenty of North Mississippi teenagers. He likes duck hunting and deer hunting. He fishes. He plays a little golf. Given the choice, he would rather be outside than sitting in front of a television playing video games. “Going fishing is almost like playing a video game in real life,” he said. He likes ramen noodles, too — although his method of eating them might trouble a few culinary purists. Wade has been known to open the package, sprinkle in the seasoning and eat the noodles raw. Then there is his other qualification. Ford Wade — Oxford High offensive tackle, Ole Miss football commitment and aspiring orthodontist — is also a certified forklift operator. Seriously. A few weeks before the interview, Ford and his father joined one of Chip’s friends for a day of forklift training in Memphis. By the end of the day, Wade had earned his OSHA forklift certification. Why? “That’s a great question,” he said. “I have no idea. Just something to do. Put it on my résumé.” Wade was the youngest person in the class by a considerable margin and proudly produced both a photograph and his certificate as evidence. “I’m pretty proud of it,” he said. “I spent all day learning how to drive a forklift, and now I can.” And should this football thing somehow fail? Wade already has a backup plan. “I might be driving a forklift at the Toyota plant in Tupelo,” he joked. The more serious post-football plan involves considerably smaller equipment. Wade hopes to attend dental school and eventually become a dentist or orthodontist. He likes the medical field and the idea that his career might help someone who isn’t confident about his or her smile.
8 2026
Football, he knows, has an expiration date. His father knows it, too. That understanding helped Chip and Allison navigate a recruiting process that brought their son attention from an unusually broad collection of schools. Ford received offers not only from major football programs but from Harvard, Army and Navy. For Chip, that meant the recruiting process was about finding a place for his son to get an education as much as finding a place to play football. “Academics is far more important than athletics,” Chip said. And while having Ford at Ole Miss means the family won’t have to travel far on Saturdays, Chip said proximity wasn’t the deciding factor. “At the end of the day, it was really where he wanted to play and go to school,” he said. After meeting the Ole Miss coaches and considering Ford’s interests, Chip believes his son found the right place. “I think Oxford, from what his interests are, is the best fit, regardless of living here or not.” Before Ole Miss, though, there is one more season as a Charger. And Ford Wade isn’t ready to skip ahead. He talks about teammates as brothers and coaches as mentors. Veteran Coach Taylor saw something in Wade when he was an eighth grader and spent hours teaching him plays, sometimes picking him up at home and taking him to school or practice. Coach Taylor is a hall of fame coach and he’s been the biggest influence on how I have developed as a player and at teammate,” Ford says, “You will not find a better football coach at any level. He is a great coach and friend.” Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe has become another important mentor, someone Wade says he can approach with questions about football or life and expect a straight answer. Now Wade finds himself becoming the older player younger Chargers approach with their questions. He remembers being the freshman looking toward the seniors. Now he’s the senior. Soon enough, he’ll become a freshman again, this time at Ole Miss. Wade isn’t approaching that next step as a hometown star arriving on campus with something already earned. “I know I’m not,” he said of being a finished product. “I’m basically coming in as nobody.” His plan is simple: take coaching, work, get stronger, learn the offense and earn whatever comes next. That work ethic is something Chip Wade recognizes, although Dad is quick to point out that the highly recruited offensive lineman is still a teenager. He doesn’t always make his bed. He sometimes needs to be told to put down the phone or turn off the television and go to sleep. “He listens to the things he wants to listen to and doesn’t to the things he doesn’t,” Chip said. In other words, Ford Wade might be an Ole Miss commitment, but around the Wade house he’s still Ford. That’s probably a good thing. There will be plenty of attention ahead. There will be Friday nights at Oxford this fall, Saturdays at VaughtHemingway Stadium in the future and, if Wade’s plans work out, perhaps football beyond that. But first comes a senior season with his friends, his teammates and, hopefully, his little brother beside him on the offensive line. It’s quite a journey for a kid who once stood there watching the football bus leave without him and wondered whether that was a sign. It wasn’t. There was another bus coming. Ford Wade got on it. And this fall could be quite a ride for Ford and the Oxford Chargers. Provided, of course, he doesn’t miss the bus.

LAFAYETTE COMMODORES
Commodores’ comeback season By Andy Baeuerle Commodore — the officer in command of a convoy. Dictionaries define Commodore as a high-ranking official, leader, or director. One who rises above others to lead and command. The word also defines what the Lafayette Commodore football program hopes for in the 2026 season. It’s safe to say the last two seasons have been under par for what the Commodores are expected to do. After a two-game run to the MHSAA 5A Playoffs in 2023, the Commodores dropped all 10 games of the following season. 2025 saw a bit of a bounce back, with Lafayette finishing 6-5 in the regular season, before dropping their first-round playoff game against Cleveland Central. But with many returners from last season, 11th-year head coach Anthony Hart says, “That is not our plan for this year.” Coach Hart is a 29-year veteran of Mississippi High School Football, where his career began at West Lauderdale in 1997. After stops at Loyd Star and Franklin County, Hart arrived at Lafayette High School in 2005, where he was the head coach for seven seasons and won the MHSAA 4A State Championship twice. Stops at Franklin County, Madison Central, and Brookhaven Academy between 2014 and 2022 led Hart back to Lafayette in 2023. He attributes his team’s optimism to the returning talent from years past, saying “We’ve got about 20 seniors and they’ve really progressed the last couple of years, and we’ve put them in a position where we hope to reap the benefits of their last two years.” Senior linebacker Noah Benson shares this same sentiment: “A lot 18 2026

Lafayette football coach Anthony Hart
Lafayette football players Kameron Pritchard (5) and Noah Benson (6) of guys with experience are with us, so I feel like with all the experience and chemistry we have as a team, this will be a pretty exciting year.” In 2025, Benson accounted for 50 total tackles and one fumble recovery. Among the returners from 2025 is quarterback John Colt Robertson, who had a successful year himself in 2025. Last season, Robertson accounted for 538 passing yards and four rushing touchdowns. He can also hold onto the ball in sticky situations, with four fumbles last season and only losing one. In the ground game, the Commodores are returning running back Kamaron Pritchard, who finished 2025 with 781 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Pritchard is also a linebacker, who amassed 70 tackles, three sacks, and three fumble recoveries. And while acknowledging last season, Pritchard explains he hopes to go above and beyond his achievements in 2026. “I’m looking forward to getting 1,000 rushing yards and 100 total tackles this year, both of which would be the highest of my career.” Coach Hart was a little more reserved on the top games this season, saying, “On a regional schedule in high school football, you’ve got five games and those are the games that matter. But no one is more important than the other.” Noah Benson and Kamaron Pritchard both had the same thoughts on what could be the biggest or most important game of the year: West Point. It’s no secret that West Point has been one of the most dominant teams in Mississippi high school football. In Region 1 the rivalry between West Point and Lafayette in recent years has intensified, despite West Point’s all time record against the Commodores being 12-3. But this year, Benson, Pritchard, and their squad hope to close the gap. Benson even went as far to say “We’ve got something special for them this year.”

The Regents Lions embark into their second High School Football season with a hard working and dedicated team ready to navigate the competition. Their first season was deemed very successful by Head Coach and Athletic Director JoJo Pearson. Last years’ team only had two seniors, neither of whom had played football before. Their competitive spirit and resilience led them to win three games and make it to the playoffs, creating valuable experience for the players. This upcoming season will be marked by increased leadership and experience on the team. Coach Pearson established a leadership council of Regents’ 8 Football seniors who will set the standard of playing with honor and being good ambassadors of the school. “ They all work hard naturally and they want to be the best they can be and it doesn’t take a lot of prodding from me to get that out of them,” Pearson said. The team worked hard in the weight room this summer alongside Coach Pearson. “That also carries with it, hopefully and prayerfully, some injury prevention” He added. Senior wide receiver and defensive back Will Jones was named by Pearson to be a strong leader for their team, expressing how Jones has been a vocal leader for the team through the offseason. Jones is expected to lead the team on and off the field this year. Regents’ biggest game this year against Marshall Academy carries some strong competition. Marshall serves the neighboring county and the two teams are well connected, Coach Pearson’s father having coached there. The two schools will face each other on Regents home field, The Farm,
on Sept. 18. Marshall Academy is the classification above Regents but the Lions hope to put up a fight. The rise of football at Regents has also been accompanied by an expansion of their community. Friday night lights unites the Regents community and allows for opportunities like their kids night on August 21st as well as halftime activities throughout the season. “I do think football brings with it a real opportunity for us to be who we are and stay true to our mission to discipline our students to love, serve, and glorify God,” Pearson said. Regents is quickly growing and expanding with 530 students enrolled this year. For Pearson, his involvement with Regents has been fruitful. “We’re all homogeneous, we all believe in Jesus,” Pearson said “It’s a breath of fresh air in that regard. We all see eye to eye on so many things and it’s just a positive situation and positive work environment. It’s really exciting and really helps me and my family feel at home which is really on point with what our mission is here.”
Regents was recently awarded the MAIS All-Athletic Award showcasing the success the school has had. Pearson wants to continue the athletic season by not focusing on the award rather on demonstrating virtues through athletics, “I try to keep them focused on doing the little things correctly. Living as unto the Lord and not unto men and not getting too wrapped up in the sport and the results but to focus more on the process.” “One of the coolest things about an all sports award like that is it means that across all 13 of our sports that we’re striving for excellence,” Pearson said. “We’re pouring into these young men and women, and that we’re doing our best to lead them as coaches and administrators, and even as teachers, just to help them have an environment where they can flourish, and they can learn how to juggle the different things and responsibilities that they have on them.”
