Acollectiveefforttochangenorms andstereotypesthatunderpin gender-basedviolence

TheWE-Talkprojectaimstohelpreduce gender-basedviolence(GBV)inJamaicaby raisingawarenessaboutharmfulattitudesand behaviourscontributingtoGBV,andby empoweringcommunityleadersand organizations.Innovativemethodsforresearch, stakeholderengagement,behaviourchange communicationcampaigns,andcapacitybuilding helptopromotetransformationof socialnorms andreduceGBV.Theprojectprioritizes collaborationwithcivilsocietyorganizations, community-basedyouthgroups,women'srights organizations,andfeministcollectives.

Usingartificialintelligence(AI)researchtools, Quilt.AIwillanalyzehowGBVisrepresentedin Jamaicansocialmediaanddissect accompanyingpublicperceptions.Quilt.AIwill identifytrustworthysourcesandmessagingon varioussocialmediaplatformsthroughthe analysisofsearchdata,keywords,videos, images,profiles,andposts.Insightsgained willbeusedtodevelopaneffective communicationcampaigntochangeattitudes andbehavioursregardingGBV,ultimatelyto increasethelikelihoodofreducingGBVin Jamaica.

Thenextstepistoidentifytopicandrelationshipbetweenwords.Theprogramme thenassignsasentimentscoretoapost.Sincethehumanlanguageiscomplex,the programmeistrainedtodetectandanalyzegrammaticalnuances,slangwords, culturalvariations,andmisspellings.

Aneutralpostisonethatdoesnotconveyanypositiveornegativesentiment:it solelystatesfacts.Neutraltextsarecriticaltoimprovetheoverallaccuracyofthe sentimentmodel;‘denoising’orcleaningthedatasetandpreventingthemodelfrom categorizing thedataaccurately,theneutralclasssignificantlyimprovesthebinary classificationofnegativeandpositivesentiment.

There’snosuchthingasgender-based violence…Malesareviolent,femalesare violent.Nocrimeatallwehcommittedinna Jamaicaoranywhereelseinnatheworld shouldbedistinguishedbygender.So, whenunnoagoputoutthisbigthingaroad asiftosay,‘Oh,geezam,womenaredying andthisisserious’.Ofcourse,thisisvery serious,butpeoplearedyingandifthe mandemadeadatsucharapidrate,why istherenoimportanceplacedonthisfact, thisreality?

Whilegender-basedviolenceis hiddenbya‘cultureofsilence’, violenceagainstmenisvisible

GeneralizedviolenceinJamaicareceivesmuchmedia attentionwhileGBVislesspublicized,spokenabout,or legitimizedbylegalinstitutions.Thus,usersmayfeelremoved fromtheissueofGBVandaremoreoutragedbygang violence,corporalpunishmentorurbancrime.Thecultureof silencingvictimsofGBV,underreporting,andthebeliefthat violenceagainstwomenoccursinprivatespaces,apartfrom society,allservetoperpetuatethisnorm.
