A New Federal Holiday to Honor the Past and Celebrate the Future

Juneteenth, a day of jubilation, is a powerful moment in American history as it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and the fulfillment of the promises set forth in the Emancipation Proclamation. Signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation declared that all enslaved people in Confederate states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free,” but it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, some two and a half years after the presidential decree that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that all enslaved people were free. This long-awaited news sparked heartfelt celebrations that spread across the country and became known as JUNETEENTH (a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth”), our country’s second Independence Day.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday and a time to reflect on courage, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. It’s often celebrated with family/community gatherings, educational programs, parades, music and picnics — honoring both heritage and celebrating the future. The Juneteenth Collective Club Collaboration (JCCC) is an alliance of numerous Solivita Clubs working together to plan and coordinate Solivita’s Juneteenth community celebration along with Solivita Activities.

We invite all residents, and guests of all ages, to join in the upcoming Juneteenth Jubilee Parade & Street Party wherein we will come together to learn, celebrate freedom, and appreciate the strength that continues to shape our shared history. Mark your calendars for JUNE 19th from 5pm-9pm in the Village Center. Rain or shine.

Gym Reflections: Clean Space, Strong Community

National Fitness Day had a strong turnout. Celebrated every year on the first Saturday in May, this year’s event provided residents with the opportunity to learn more about the fitness equipment and our Fast Track Program offered here. It also supported participation from residents who had not previously used the gym or were less familiar with it.

JULY REFLECTIONS

ASSEMBLY, DELIVERY & PICK-UP

Monday, June 29th • 8am • Ballroom

Newsletter volunteers are needed and will be assisting with: Bagging (8am); Labeling (8:30am); and Delivery

As we move into June, the focus continues on maintaining a clean and well-organized shared fitness space.

Our fitness center is used by many residents throughout the day and keeping it clean is a shared responsibility. Cleaning wipes are provided for convenience—please use them to wipe down equipment after each use to help maintain a sanitary environment. Additionally, please re-rack weights, return equipment to its proper place, and keep walkways clear.

Respecting shared spaces reflects respect for others. Taking responsibility for cleaning up after use helps support accountability and consistency in maintaining the facility. It also ensures the next user has a safe and organized space.

During the summer months, increased usage makes these practices even more important. Higher traffic requires consistent upkeep from all users.

June serves as a reminder that maintaining a clean and organized fitness environment is part of everyday gym use. A clean gym is maintained through shared responsibility and consistent participation from all users.

THE RESOURCE CENTER: KEEPING ACTIVE ADULTS ACTIVE

The Resident-to-Resident Resource Center’s objective is to help keep the community as active and engaged as possible. One of the best ways to stay active is to explore the world around us, and the Resource Center’s workshop on riding the rails with SunRail focused on the adventures that await on a short train trip. The April presentation was so popular that spots filled up quickly and many were unable to register. In response, R2R has scheduled a repeat of the SunRail presentation for Monday, June 29th at 10am at The Palms. To reserve a spot, contact the Resource Center at SolivitaR2R@gmail. com or 863-236-9973. This is just one of the Resource Center’s workshops designed to make Solivita lives more meaningful. Future workshops will be announced.

FRIENDS WHO HAVE LEFT US, BUT ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

Library Corner

In the Solivita Library, located in the middle of the Village Center, we lend out books on an honor system including six (6) categories in the Non-Fiction Section: Biography, Classics, Foreign Language, Sports, War and Political. In a separate section of the library, we have large print books in both Fiction and Non-Fiction. Both hardcover and paperback books are shelved together in the Fiction section.

If you have books to donate, we accept those that have been published in the last 10 years, 2016 and newer. We do not accept art, cooking, diet, medical, self-help, religious, technical and travel books. If you have more than 12 books to donate, please call the Activities office at 863-427-7125 for the library volunteer contact information.

When you are done with your book, please return them, including donations, to the new brown “Book Return” bin inside the Library. The library volunteers will reshelve them for you

(we have a system, and we love putting them back on the shelf).

Thank you for enjoying the Solivita Library and helping us to keep it neat and organized.
