Move Smart & Stay Active This Summer
BY JOJO DE LOS SANTOS FITNESS DIRECTOR
Stay Active & Safe in the Heat
Florida summers bring intense heat and humidity, which can impact energy levels, hydration, and overall performance. The key is not to stop exercising—but to adjust how and when you do it.
Aim to stay active during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or later in the evening. Lightweight, breathable clothing and using shaded areas can make a noticeable difference in comfort and safety. Hydration is essential— don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Drinking water consistently throughout the day, along with incorporating hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges, can help maintain proper fluid balance.

It’s also important to recognize the early signs of heat-related stress. Symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, headaches, or nausea may indicate dehydration or heat exhaustion. When these occur, take a break, move to a cooler area, and rehydrate before continuing activity. Adapting to the summer season doesn’t mean reducing your activity—it means being more intentional with how you approach it.
Move Smart, Stay Consistent
Consistency is the foundation of long-term health, especially during the summer months when routines can easily be disrupted. Rather than focusing on intensity, shift your focus to maintaining regular movement in ways that feel manageable and sustainable.
Shorter workouts, frequent breaks, and listening to your body can help you stay on track without overexertion. Even light activity, such as walking, stretching, or participating in group classes, can provide meaningful benefits when done consistently. By adjusting your routine to fit the season and prioritizing steady, daily movement, you can maintain your progress, protect your energy, and continue to feel your best throughout the summer.
Staying active in July is not about doing more—it’s about doing what works, safely and consistently...so stay cool, stay moving, and we’ll see you out there!

Solivita’s Community Emergency Response Team
SUBMITTED BY LYNN BABIN TEAM LEADER OF SOLIVITA CERT
So what is CERT anyway? It may be easier to say what it is NOT. It is not a club. It is not a Solivita organization. CERT is a national program in partnership with FEMA and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). CERT members learn about disaster preparedness and receive training in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. We are not just neighbors helping neighbors, we are TRAINED Polk County volunteers using the proper procedures to help keep you and ourselves safe. We report directly to Polk County Fire Rescue and use their appropriate forms. We meet monthly to practice our skills and learn new ones as approved by FDEM.
Should a disaster hit Solivita (hurricane, tornado, etc.), CERT members can be activated by Polk County Fire and Rescue. CERT volunteers provide immediate assistance to victims before emergency first responders arrive on scene. CERT volunteers also provide year-round outreach by supporting the community in activities such as Check, Call, Compress (CCC) classes, help with crowd safety at parades, etc.
Polk County Fire Rescue covers 2,000 square miles and more than 600,000 residents and growing! While they currently have 50 fire and rescue stations, which is one of the largest in the state of Florida, should a disaster strike, they will be stretched to their limit. In addition, fire houses and personnel can also be affected by the disaster limiting rescue personnel

and equipment. Trees, debris, and high water can block roads significantly delaying access to our area.
This is where CERT comes in. For example, if a hurricane is predicted, Polk County may place CERT members on alert, which means being sure all our gear is ready, phone chain activated, etc. Should the event hit and is severe enough to require our additional help, we are then activated. This is where our training kicks in. This is when we put on those Green CERT shirts for YOU Solivita!
We would love you to join us! No experience or skills are necessary. Polk County Fire Rescue provides a three-day training course. Upon graduation, you’ll receive your own CERT backpack filled with goodies and the famous green CERT shirt! Join us for a meet and greet on Monday, September 14th at 1pm in the Ballroom. Watch for more information!
