Happy September Solivita!

By Rudy Bautista, LCAM Solivita Community Association Manager This is the time of year when we all anticipate fall, as it is fast approaching. As you probably do, I too welcome the cooler mornings. Fall brings us nicer weather which in turn allows me to drink a cup of coffee outside on my patio without having to sweat in my chair. I also welcome the beautiful evenings that Central Florida is known for throughout, where we can take our four-legged family member out for longer walks in our neighborhood. Hopefully you too take advantage of this time as much as we do. I would also like to announce that the Solivita Advisory Committee (SAC) is now taking applications! Below is some information regarding the SAC and their important role that they play in Solivita.

new members to replace this year’s exiting members. To apply for the SAC, please complete a Solivita Advisory Committee application and return it to the Administration office or email it to AdvisoryCommittee@SolivitaHOA.com by September 23rd. Applications are available at the Concierge Desk in Administration and online at SolivitaHOA.com. If we are able to, there will be an interview process as the current SAC selects the replacements. Contact Raj Hanooman at 863-4277124 if you have questions or concerns regarding the Solivita Advisory Committee and the application process. Please remember that my door is always open to any of our Solivita residents. For all our new residents, I would like to say, “Welcome,” and please feel free to stop by and say “Hi!”

Solivita Advisory Committee

The SAC is made up of Solivita residents from different neighborhoods in the community. The SAC’s role includes: Acting in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors regarding the quality of life issues of concern to homeowners; and to assist the management company in matters such as reviewing specifications and vendor bids for contracts, evaluating vendor performance on their contracts, and addressing Association business issues. The SAC meets once a month in sessions that can last up to two hours, depending on the number and complexity of matters discussed. Members serve three-year terms which are replaced each year in January. At this time, the committee is recruiting for

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Check out what the stats were in previous months, airing on Channel 732. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Think about these facts: • A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. • Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. • Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.

19th Annual Fall Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, November 7th from 10am-4pm Village Drive | Rain or Shine

We are closely following the recommendations and instructions from Taylor Morrison, Evergreen Lifestyles Management, and our local and state government in regards to COVID-19 and large gatherings. Due to the unforeseen future, we are continuing with event planning in the hopes we are able to host this enormous event again this year. The Festival will continue as planned until we hear otherwise.

RESIDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (2-HOUR SHIFTS) We will not be asking high school students to volunteer at this year’s Festival. All volunteer jobs will be handled by resident volunteers. For this year only, most volunteer jobs have been eliminated or redefined, and new jobs created. Safety guidelines will be provided to volunteers prior to the event via email communication, in-person, or virtual communication. Volunteers are needed as follows: • Vendor Check-In (early morning shift only) • Vendor Assistance (direct vendors, help with tent setup/take down) • Indoor Vendor Room Monitors (tally/limit number of room occupants at one time) • Event Photographers • Inflate Balloons (using helium tank) • Kidz Zone Assistance (hand out take-home crafts and balloons, help with spin art and drawing board, monitor stage area) If you are interested in volunteering at this year’s Fall Festival or need more information, send an email to solivitafallfestival@ gmail.com or call Donna Claussen, Resident Volunteer Coordinator, at 863-496-7459. A Solivita Volunteer T-shirt will be given to volunteers who haven’t received one in the past. Volunteer Orientation and Training is scheduled for Monday, October 26th at 1:30pm in the Ballroom. *Smoking and pets will not be permitted in festival areas. September Happenings By Jana Malik Director of Activities

Back to School ... Online Classes

September is the time of year that makes me think of football, the start of the fall season, but also “Back to School.” At Solivita, we are fortunate to have an internally run scholastic program called Solivita University (SU) taught mostly by retired Solivita resident educators and authors. While we normally hold in-person classes with a tuition fee ranging from $5-$50 per student, the SU faculty has worked hard to move their classes online using Zoom or pre-recorded lecture videos for you to enjoy FREE of tuition costs. Find all the interesting course topics coming up in September (Great Decision discussions, art and literary lectures, photography, history and religion) and October (Great Decision discussions, art and literary lectures, history, computer, phone and tablet technology) in this month’s Reflections newsletter on pages 11-13 and also stay tuned to community email blasts for the class registration links.

played and they are working on adding professional video slide transitions to break up a grouping of videos to add interesting visual appeal. There is one last chance to submit your home video of anything you like (tasteful and without solicitation) by Sunday, September 13th to SolivitaActivities@EvergreenLM.com. Every video submission you send (the more, the merrier) gives you multiple chances to win (1) $50 Kohl’s Gift Card. If you have a VHS, either play it on your TV and record it on your cellphone or take it to Walgreens where they will put it on a CD that you can bring to the Solivita Activities office and we can copy it. Or, download it from your cell phone or tablet and share it by email, to the address above (using one of the icons below on your mobile device).

Don’t worry if there are specific parts of your video that you wish could be cut out. We can select the highlights of your video for the final compilation. Every video received will be compiled into the final video that will be broadcasted on Wednesday, September 30th at 6pm on Channel 732. After this day, we will send a YouTube link via the community email blast.

What an Improvement!

Thanks to Brandon Payne, our dedicated Audio/Visual Specialist at Solivita, our video and sound quality on Channel 732 has been upgraded. He changed our TV to computer adapter from VGA to HDMI and directly connected sound from Channel 732 into our computer, bypassing the use of a sound adaptor. If you haven’t

Solivita Home Videos!

Have you ever watched America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC? They are celebrating their 30th season, having been on air since 1989. Activities is compiling the video submissions from Solivita residents and it is starting to look a lot like that show’s premise. We’ve already received an array of videos from residents playing with their adorable dogs, having fun with their grandkids when they visit Solivita, lip syncing, performing karaoke, or just filming their explorations outside their homes. Activities will also be adding voice overs to provide a quick “synopsis” of the video being

Hopefully something more pleasant will come through my pores after this month’s special dates and things to do in the area.

Labor Day: September 7th

Labor Day is celebrated at separate times of the year in different countries. Most countries celebrate it on May 1st, but Australia, Canada, Bahamas and a few others vary. Here in the U.S. we do so on the first Monday in September. Whatever the date, workers worldwide appreciate that special day set aside for them.

National Grandparents Day: September 13th

It is difficult to spend time with your grandchildren due to COVID-19. You may still call them, face time with them, and send them letters. Although letters are not a common form of communication in our technology filled world, kids still love receiving mail. Maybe you could ask them to write you back if they are old enough and teach them about snail mail! When they get older, they will probably remember the first time they sent a letter and to whom it went. Hopefully you are shown all the gratitude you deserve on Grandparents Day!

If you’re comfortable and looking for some places to visit, go to florida-backroads-travel.com to find some day trips that interest you or read on for some more ideas. Due to COVID-19, make sure you call before going anywhere as things change daily.

We must adapt to this virus like a chameleon changing colors. The difference is that it is very satisfying to watch chameleons change colors, but we can’t see the virus.

Promenade at Sunset Walk

Have you been to the Promenade (located at 3251 Margaritaville Boulevard in Kissimmee)? If not, you might want to check it out. They have several restaurants, stores, live music and my favorite is the Studio Movie Grill (3204 Margaritaville Boulevard). Call 321-333-4450 or visit studiomoviegrill.com. You can enjoy a movie eating food and sitting on leather reclining seats with a button to press for service and mints on the way out. The Island H2O Live! Water Park is also a hit, located at 3230 Inspiration Drive (407-910-1401). They always have things going on and you can visit sunsetwalk.com to find out more.

Hollis Garden

You may visit Hollis Garden located at 702 E. Orange Street in Lakeland (863-834-2280). The Garden is open from 10am6pm, Sunday through Thursday; 10am-4pm on Friday and Saturday; and they are closed on Mondays. The Garden is open to the public and there is no entrance fee.

Sister Junktiques Vintage Market

There is a unique store called Sister Junktiques Vintage Market, located at 31549 US-27 in Haines City, that I really enjoy. There are several different vendor areas in the store, and they put their own style on different items including furniture. In my opinion, its darling! Of course that doesn’t mean everyone will like it, but if you get bored, you should go and check it out. They are open from 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Thursday; 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday; 11am-4pm on Sunday; and they are closed on Mondays. For more information, please call 863-547-9748. I am pretty sure I have developed a cleaning disorder due to COVID-19. Is this what it means to cleanse the mind, body and soul? On a serious note, hang on to your moral values that keep you pure, good and true to yourself and others. If you can do that, you will be truly sanitized on the inside and we all know the outside is covered! Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

CERT Tip: Water Treatment (After A Boil Warning) Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

After a storm when you have used all of your stored water and there are no other reliable clean water sources, it may become necessary in an emergency situation to treat suspicious water. Treat all water of uncertain quality before using it for drinking, food washing or preparation, washing dishes, brushing teeth or making ice. In addition to having a bad odor and taste, contaminated water can contain microorganisms (germs) that cause diseases such as dysentery, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis. There are many ways to treat water. None is perfect. Before treating, let any suspended particles settle to the bottom or strain them through coffee filters or layers of clean cloth. Make sure you have the necessary materials in your disaster supplies kit for the chosen water treatment method described below.

Boiling

Boiling is the safest (and easiest) method of treating water. In a large pot or kettle, bring water to a rolling boil for one full minute, keeping in mind that some water will evaporate. Let the water cool before drinking. Boiled water will taste better if you put oxygen back into it by pouring the water back and forth between two clean containers. This also will improve the taste of stored water.

Chlorination

You can use household liquid bleach to kill microorganisms. Use only regular household liquid bleach that contains 5.25 to 6.0 percent sodium hypochlorite. Do not use scented bleaches, color safe bleaches or bleaches with added cleaners. Because

the potency of bleach diminishes with time, use bleach from a newly opened or unopened bottle. Add 16 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of bleach per gallon of water, stir and let stand for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight bleach odor. If it doesn’t, then repeat the dosage and let stand another 15 minutes. If it still does not smell of chlorine, discard it and find another source of water. Other chemicals, such as iodine or water treatment products sold in camping or surplus stores that do not contain 5.25 or 6.0 percent sodium hypochlorite as the only active ingredient, are not recommended and should not be used.

Distillation

While boiling and chlorination will kill most microbes in water, distillation will remove microbes (germs) that resist these methods, as well as heavy metals, salts and most other chemicals. Distillation involves boiling water and then collection of only the vapor that condenses. The condensed vapor will not include salt or most other impurities. To distill, fill a pot halfway with water. Tie a cup to the handle on the pot’s lid so that the cup will hang right-side-up when the lid is upside-down (make sure the cup is not dangling into the water) and boil the water for 20 minutes. The water that drips from the lid into the cup is distilled. This obviously is the most labor and time-intensive for any reasonable quantity of water. These recommendations are brought to you by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) team. Be prepared.

Are You Living with Clutter? In all probability, you have been spending more time in your house in recent months than at any other time in your life. If this has led you to realize that your home is just too cluttered or disorganized, it is a great time to get some order and control back in your life by decluttering. Getting rid of clutter is never easy; it challenges the way we hold on to memories and the role “things” have in our lives. Nonetheless, reducing clutter can often reduce stress and increase our enjoyment of our homes. If you think it’s time to declutter, the Resource Center has detailed guidelines on how to get started ... and find your way to an improved living space. Look for the “Decluttering Guide” on the R2R webpage by clicking on the link or going to: SolivitaHOA.com > Get Connected > R2R Resource Center > Community Information and Services.

problem, start with a specific category. Clean out your collection of shoes or sweaters. You will be exhausted if you try to tackle your whole closet. Know where things will go. The process will be easier if you create a path and decide that clothes you don’t want will go to the Salvation Army, knick-knacks to Habitat for Humanity, old towels and T-shirts to an animal shelter, and family heirlooms to your niece who loves antiques. Set a limit. Decide you will work ten minutes every day or 30 minutes every Monday; or that you will eliminate one, two, or ten items every day. Most decluttering projects fail because people get overwhelmed by the size of the project. Recruit a friend. Find someone who is willing to help. If you’re in doubt about whether to keep or toss something, he or she will likely give you some good advice. Know why you have it. Some items have a place in our lives, but others don’t. No matter how much you love that flowered jacket you bought in France, if it doesn’t go with anything in your closet, it’s time to let go.

Identify the Problem

• Do you have things piled in hallways or on surfaces so that it is difficult to navigate? • Do you have so much of one thing (clothes, dishes, papers, cans of soup) that you can’t find what you really need? • Does your clutter embarrass you or your spouse/companion? • Is your clutter a source of stress? Do you go to bed each night worrying about the “mess?”

Get Started

Start small; be focused. If mountains of clothes are your

Examine your lifestyle. Most of us moved here from somewhere else and are holding on to things that represent the way we used to live. • If you go north once a year for one week, you don’t need a big collection of boots and heavy sweaters. • If your entertaining is more casual now, you don’t need three sets of good china. • If your house can accommodate only three overnight guests at a time, you don’t need a dozen sets of extra towels and bedding. Improve the way your home functions. Instead of feeling frustrated, you’ll feel triumphant! R2R Resource Center 863-236-9973 SolivitaR2R@gmail.com

Fall is Almost Back!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Can you believe it has been a whole year since we entered autumn and the holiday season? Yet here we are again!

Summer Work

Now that fall is beginning, Floralawn is celebrating the completion of our fourth summer providing landscaping and lawn care to the Solivita community. We love what we do because of every Solivita resident who is happy with their landscaping, and we enjoy maintaining the turf, plants, and trees to keep this community looking beautiful. We learn more every year and are excited to work in this community. Like every summer, the focus of this past one was controlling turf and shrub growth. Our hard-working crews stayed on top of mowing and detailing all summer long. We stay attuned to the unpredictability of Florida’s weather to keep your lawns looking great. Grass can be stressed by soggy and dry ground alike, so we adjust our watering based on the forecast. If there are consecutive days of rain, we keep the irrigation turned off, and we run it during dry periods.

September To-Dos

As we all know, the summer heat is still blazing in September, so our tasks for this month are similar to what they have been for the last few. We continue monitoring the weather and adjusting watering schedules as the summer rains abate. Our mowing and detailing crews will still service the community on a weekly basis.

The Return of Love Bugs

We underwent the year’s first swarm of love bugs in May and will enter the second love bug season in September. A wet dryer sheet should do the trick if you’re trying to remove the bugs from your windshield. Do you have any questions about the services Floralawn offers or about your landscaping in general? Give us a call! Our number is 863-225-9565. You are also always welcome to visit our office in the Administration Building to speak with us. Have a wonderful fall!

Controlling Fungal Turf Diseases

The heat and humidity of Florida summers also contribute to environments in which fungal diseases flourish. We watch out for signs of diseases like Fairy Ring Fungus, Gray Leaf Spot, Take All Root Rot, and Brown Patch, all of which attack the turfgrasses that grow in Solivita. We use both chemical controls (herbicides and fungicides) and cultural controls (appropriate irrigation and mowing practices) to keep these fungal diseases in check.

TAI CHI IN FREEDOM PARK

These Tai Chi enthusiasts would not be deterred by COVID-19! They ensure social distancing between participants, keep masks handy on Saturday mornings and spend some time together with teacher Nan Chen, doing Tai Chi to enhance their overall balance and health. Following a brief meditation and some stretches, the group does the 8, 16 and 24 movements.

Alina’s Journey

By Susie Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Lead The American Cancer Society recognizes September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I would like to introduce you to this sweet little girl, Alina, and how her journey with cancer has captured the hearts of so many of us in Solivita. I heard about Solivita resident, Heidi Eisenhauer’s granddaughter, Alina who started her cancer journey before her birth. Inspired and touched by her story, I called Heidi and introduced myself. She agreed to meet and talk about her beautiful granddaughter and the courage displayed by herself, her son Jacob, and her daughter-in-law Natalie. Heidi explained that doctors spotted a cancerous growth while Alina was still in the womb at 38 weeks. At 10 days old, they diagnosed her with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, removed the tumor and initiated chemotherapy. “The words ‘baby’ and ‘cancer’ should never be in the same sentence,” Heidi says. “The thought of chemo, that poison, going through that little baby’s body was unthinkable. I prayed and prayed.” After learning about Relay For Life and how the American Cancer Society’s fundraising leads to life-saving research for patients, including children, Heidi wanted to help and share Alina’s journey with cancer.

Heidi decided to start a team: “Alina’s Ballerinas.” Before she knew it many of her friends and neighbors wanted to get involved. She was even having T-shirts made with Alina’s picture on them. The support from friends and Solivita residents lent strength to her, Jacob and Natalie. Our 2020 Solivita Relay For Life was set for April and Heidi was to be our “inspirational speaker” sharing Alina’s journey with cancer. Then COVID-19 brought everything to a halt, but little Alina and her family had to keep fighting and praying. “Faith and hope for the final day to the end of this cancer -- that’s what we all waited for,” Heidi said. “That was the focus, an end to this cancer.” We’re happy to announce that doctors have declared little Alina cancer free! Heidi is grateful for the comfort she received from Solivita residents and says God used her friends and the American Cancer Society to help guide them through this cancer journey. She looks forward to reviving her Relay For Life efforts in 2021. I honestly believe that Alina’s smile and her beautiful eyes is what kept everyone positive. Alina knew she was going to win this battle. Happy 1st Birthday Alina (on September 27th) and many more birthdays to celebrate! Thank you to Heidi, Jacob and Natalie for sharing Alina’s journey. September is also Ovarian Cancer Month. To learn more, visit cancer.org/cancer/ovarian-cancer.htm.
