Let’s Meet (in-person please) Again By Jana Malik Director of Activities

Seeing the number of online Resident Event Request Forms and hearing the excitement from our clubs requesting the use of Club facilities has been music to the Activities’ Teams ears! Most of the room requests have been for the Freedom Park pavilions, while the others have been for club board and committee meetings. This has been a telling and good sign that clubs are ready to meet and start planning again. Now that the indoor club facilities, especially the Ballroom, are back to 100% room capacity, let the meetings, classes, events and parties resume! Speaking of meeting again, we hope to see you all at the upcoming Red, White and Blue Street Party on Sunday, July 4th, along with your families and friends of all ages for an Independence Day celebration that makes a big bang! See important information below about road and building closings that day. For event information, refer to the back of this month’s calendar insert.

The Only Board, Committee or Small Meeting Room

We wanted to remind clubs, committees and neighborhood groups that as of July 2019, the Magnolia Room is the ONLY room that can be reserved for meetings of 15 people or less. If the Magnolia Room is unavailable during the date and time requested, no other club facility will be offered. This change has been made due to the number of Solivita clubs, and the many board and committee meetings that were scheduled, versus room availability. With 265 registered Solivita Clubs, 9 Support Groups and 26 Neighborhood Groups but only 14 indoor meeting

facilities available, space needs to be utilized appropriately for clubs to have meetings, classes, potlucks or special events. Card groups that were scheduled as reoccurring reservations in the Magnolia Room have been changed to a contact name in the calendar so that they will be notified if the room is needed for a board or committee meeting. This will be done no more than two times a month per group. This is the same process that we use when scheduling card groups in the Gator Room and in the Venezia, Bella Viana and Lago Vista clubhouses.

July 4th Road & Building Closings

See more information about this event on the back of the inserted monthly tri-fold calendar and in upcoming community email blasts. » VILLAGE DRIVE FROM THE BALLROOM TO THE PRO SHOP ROUNDABOUT IS CLOSED TO VEHICLES FROM 3-10PM FOR SETUP AND EVENT. » All parking behind the Bistro Café and in the roundabout will be closed all day for event setup. » Golf cart parking will be closed in the Village Center all day for event setup. » The Palms and the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center closes at 5pm. » The Bistro and The Grille at Stonegate will remain open past normal hours, for the event, until 9pm.

Yard of the Month

Jana’s article continued from page 4

Club Potlucks & Alcohol

Only the registered Solivita Clubs and Neighborhood Groups are permitted to have a potluck once a month in the Solivita club facilities. A potluck is defined as non-catered, home prepared food dishes. If anyone is hosting a private event such as a birthday party, anniversary, etc in the Village Center or at The Palms, they are required to contract all food and beverage needs through the Solivita Catering Department by contacting Megan Bell through email or phone at mbell@hampton.golf or 863-427-7150 option 5. Within ALL of the club facilities located throughout the Solivita community (including the satellite pools), alcohol is not permitted to be brought in by anyone including Solivita Clubs and Neighborhood Groups. Solivita, through Hampton Golf, has a liquor license to adhere to.

“It’s summertime and the living is easy in Solivita.” The yard at 347 Sorrento Road in Bella Viana was chosen as our Yard of the Month. Congratulations to Annette Hall and Catherine Cabeza! One can observe a lot of hard work and time has gone into their landscape that attracts pollinators and is full of little surprises. Go visit and take a few minutes to enjoy another beautiful front yard, making our community a joy to live in. Are you our next winner? Check out the next Reflections.

Learn Facebook Social Media

Speaking of meeting, if you want to connect with long-time friends or families that don’t live close by, find them on Facebook. Solivita University will offer a four week course this month, taught by Solivita resident Catherine Larson, on all the ins and outs of Facebook. Show off what you’ve learned to your kids and grandkids! See page 8 for registration and more information.

The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! Summer Air Conditioning Tips

Simple and inexpensive actions can help you save energy and money during the hot summer months. • Schedule regular maintenance to keep your unit running efficiently • Install and set programmable thermostats to help you save on your cooling costs • Use ceiling fans to cool rooms, allowing you to turn your air conditioner temperature up a few degrees • Insulate your attic and walls, and seal openings and cracks to prevent hot air from leaking into your home • Insulate and seal ducts to prevent cool air loss • Don’t heat your home with appliances – avoid using the oven on hot days • Install energy-efficient window coverings to prevent solar heat gain • Use a bathroom fan when taking a shower or bath to remove heat and humidity For more information, go to energy.gov or use the following link: energy.gov/articles/energy-saver-101-infographic-home-cooling.

Meet More of Our Volunteers Amanda and Mary Beth Steckel

This mother and daughter team recently joined the Resource Center crew, helping out with workshops and events. Mary Beth, a retired school nurse moved to Solivita with her family a year ago. She and Amanda enjoyed University of Missouri and Missouri State football, where Mary Beth’s husband and Amanda’s dad

coached for many years. Amanda is a Harry Potter enthusiast, enjoys Disney, and loves dogs. She has made several new friends as a trusted dog walker and providing excellent care for the resident’s dogs while they are away. Mary Beth enjoys spending time with friends, playing pickleball and mahjong, and eating out at the local restaurants.

Ralph Whalen

Ralph, a farm boy from Minnesota, met his wife, a fellow teacher, in his home state. They soon decided they wanted to enjoy the world and began teaching overseas, with their last stop abroad in Taiwan for over 30 years. For most of Ralph’s career he worked as a student counselor helping American students and their families adjust to life overseas. Six years ago, he moved to Solivita to enjoy the warm weather and a place with easy access to the airport for his family to visit. Ralph continues to use his counseling skills by helping new residents adjust to retired life in Solivita. He enjoys cycling, exercise, walking, SoulaVita Line Dancers, the SolAbility club, and working with the residents in Rainbow Lakes East. R2R Resource Center 863-236-9973 SolivitaR2R@gmail.com

SPEED ENFORCEMENT The HOA, Security, and Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Check out what the stats were in previous months airing on Ch. 732. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Think about these facts: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit; Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

From the World of Fitness & Wellness By Jamar Edge Director of Fitness & Wellness Hello July!!! It is hard to believe that more than half the year has already passed. This month, I decided to recognize a couple of homeowners who have been impactful in the area of fitness for the community.

Fitness Homeowner Spotlight: Mitch Sussman

Resident Mitch Sussman distinguished himself and Solivita by winning six medals during the 29th Annual USA Powerlifting Military and Police/ Fire National Championships held in conjunction with the 6th Annual USA Powerlifting Orlando “The City Beautiful” Open Championships at the Renaissance Hotel, in Orlando on March 20th-21st. Mitch, Vice President of the Solivita Weight Training Club, was among nearly 200 lifters from 20 states. He competed in the Master Class for 64 to 69 year olds. Also, as a 9/11 First Responder, he qualified for the Military, Police, Fireman, and First Responder National Tournament where he competed in the open and Master Competition. Mitch received

Reflections | July 2021

a Gold and Silver Medal in the Open for bench press and dead lift. He also won four Gold Medals in the Masters for bench press, dead lift, combined weight and overall champion. A BIG SHOUT OUT to Mitch on his accomplishments and continuing to put the greatness of Solivita on the map!

FitWell Until We Meet Again: Marie Louise Hall

For those of us who have been here for 10 years and active in fitness, the name Mary Louise Hall is not new to us. Marie was very active in the community and was one of our Yoga instructors for a number of years. She loved her classes and fellow homeowners. She was known as being “quite the character.” I can still hear her voice asking me to open the Aerobics Studio door, as if it was just yesterday. Sadly, Marie Louise passed away on May 6, 2021, and will be sorely missed. For those whose lives she touched, she will surely continue to live on in their hearts. Stay safe and stay hydrated Solivita! Jamar Edge 863-496-3522 jedge@evergreen-LM.com

Rain, Rain, Rain!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Here at Solivita, we’re now solidly into summer! You may notice that grass grows almost before our eyes at this time of year. Our mowing crews stay very busy keeping residential lawns and common-area turf looking great. We have pulled back on the frequency of running Solivita’s sprinkler systems as we’re having daily downpours. There’s less need for irrigation when the grass is receiving plenty of rainwater.

A Bunch About Bugs

Last month we talked about that prominent summer lawn pest, the chinch bug. It pierces the stolon of the grass, sucks out nutritional content, and moves on to fresh areas of turf. Infestations of chinch bugs can rapidly kill large areas of turf, so we vigilantly apply pesticides, monitor grass for colonies and damage, and apply repeat treatments when necessary. This month we’ll also be looking for whitefly infestations and aphids. Whiteflies can be found on the undersides of foliage where they suck the juice from leaves and deplete foliage of nutrition that’s important for health and growth. Plants with whitefly colonies are usually stunted and have yellowing leaves.

A Bit About Storms

Another Floralawn summer task is landscape hurricane prep, as hurricane season runs for six months from June 1st to December 1st. Our preparation for this year’s season is mostly done. We’ve trimmed trees away from roofs and walls where they could cause damage in a storm, and we continue to monitor palms and other trees throughout the community. Last year’s Hurricane Irma caused a lot of damage in Solivita and demonstrated that Mother Nature is not to be taken lightly, so we were doubly inspired to prepare well for this year’s hurricane season. If you have any questions about this article or Floralawn services, don’t hesitate to call us: 863-225-9565.

July Coffee Talk

Join us on July 30th in the Starlite Ballroom at 9am for this month’s Coffee Talk! (Where we hang out for an hour over coffee, give you the latest Floralawn news, and talk about your questions and concerns.) Have a great July!

Besides compromising the health of plants, sap-sucking pests like whiteflies and aphids also secrete a substance called honeydew. Black sooty mold is a fungus that feeds on honeydew. Plants covered in honeydew soon become covered in black sooty mold and become unsightly. This month we’ll continue monitoring Solivita’s plants for sap-sucking insects and actively treat infestations as they occur.

Tips to Help You Maintain Your Independence By Rita Milios Psychotherapist & Wellness Coach, Riviera Spa Massage

As we celebrate Independence Day, we may be reminded of the importance of our own personal independence as well. The ability to maintain a sense of personal independence– having an ongoing sense of purpose and feelings of achievement, an opportunity to make a contribution to others, and the opportunity to enjoy activities and have social interactions–is important for both physical and mental/emotional health as we age. While enjoying our active Solivita lifestyles, we can maximize our current independence and plan ahead for future life changes, as well.

Preserve a Sense of Meaning & Purpose

Throughout the earlier stages of our lives, many of us likely found a great deal of meaning and purpose in caring for our families. While we still maintain that commitment and opportunity, the time involved in being grandparents and parents to grown children is usually much less than when our kids were young. So, we have both time and energy that we can transfer to other endeavors that provide us with a sense of meaning and purpose. Helping and giving to others is an excellent way to achieve that goal. In Solivita, we have numerous groups and activities that focus on helping and serving both our friends and neighbors and also the community around us. The COVID pandemic galvanized many clubs and groups and boosted their commitment to aiding those in need and those most affected by the crisis. As things slowly return to normal, there is still much opportunity to get involved in community service and assistance to our neighbors. Club-affiliated service activities are often mentioned in the Club News section of Reflections, and more detailed information about each club’s mission is available in the “Get Connected” section of SolivitaHOA.com.

Make a Contribution

In addition to finding meaning and purpose through volunteering, we can also find fulfillment and a sense of achievement by sharing some of the skills and talents that we gained over our lifetimes. Solivita is blessed to have an abundance of really talented and accomplished residents, as evidenced in the art displays, talent shows and classes and clinics that are available to us. Don’t be shy in sharing your talent or skill, whether through a club membership, by teaching a class or informally networking with fellow residents

12

to create an informal group related to your interest. The beauty of retirement is that you can choose which aspects of your “former life” that you want to bring forward and preserve and which aspects you choose to leave behind. Re-imagining your skills and talents and preserving your creativity and passion for the things you loved, can be a life-long endeavor that helps you maintain health, happiness and a sense of personal purpose.

Enjoy Social Interaction

In Solivita, we have a unique opportunity to access an abundance of opportunities for social interaction. It is often said that “you can be as busy as you want to be.” There is pretty much something for everyone, through club activities, exercise options, classes and learning experiences, and opportunities to meet people and make new friends. Still, it is up to each of us to make ourselves available for such opportunities. If you are interested in finding out more about a club that piques your interest, call or email the club contact person, listed in the Club Directory section of Reflections or on SolivitaHOA.com. Getting out and about is the best way to open yourself to socialization opportunities. If you have limitations or need encouragement to get involved, ask for assistance. Many Solivita clubs and groups have either formal or informal mechanisms in place to support fellow residents, whether it be to offer a “buddy” to ease your introduction to others at your first club meeting, provide information and networking to point you in the right direction, or assist you in accessing appropriate services, such as Resident-to-Resident services to borrow medical equipment. In other words, ask so that you may receive. No one in our community need feel alone or without support. But you need to let people know that you exist! Maintaining your personal independence as you age comes from a combination of carrying forward the aspects of your life that are worth preserving and reaching out to experience new opportunities and make new connections. For all these objectives, you are definitely in the right place.

Tip of the Month: Thunderstorm & Lightning Safety By Solivita CERT

All thunderstorms are dangerous—even the almost daily ones we see in the summer. They may involve lightning, hail, straightline winds (and downbursts) up to 150 mph, flash floods and tornadoes. Severe thunderstorms (whose forecasts will trigger your weather radio) have winds of 58 mph or greater, hail larger than ¾ inch or spawn a tornado. Pay attention to forecasts for all thunderstorms and take cover immediately.

apparent thundercloud. A 30 minute wait after the last thunder is heard is necessary because the trailing storm clouds still carry a lingering charge. This charge can produce lightning on the back edge of a storm, several minutes after the rain has ended.

Observe the 30/30 Rule

Studies have shown most people struck by lightning are struck not at the height of a thunderstorm, but before and after the storm has peaked. This shows that many people are unaware of how far lightning can strike from its parent thunderstorm. DO NOT wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, and DO NOT LEAVE SHELTER just because the rain has ended. Please comply when a Lifestyles attendant, security or golf course official asks you to move indoors. Be safe, not sorry!

A 30 second lead time is necessary prior to a storm’s arrival because of the possibility of distant strikes far ahead of the

The above is provided by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team based on information from the National Weather Service. Attend one of CERT’s open meetings—see the calendar insert in Reflections (usually the fourth Monday each month)—or call Wayne at 863-514-6728.

It is lightning that kills more people in Florida than any other weather phenomenon. Central Florida experiences a very high incidence of lightning.

Seek shelter if the “Flash-to-Bang” delay (length of time in seconds between a lightning flash and its subsequent thunder), is 30 SECONDS OR LESS, and remain under cover until 30 MINUTES AFTER the final clap of thunder.
