Blue Pumpkins & Tips for Safe Trick or Treating
Y
ou may have seen blue or teal pumpkins around lately and wondered, “What does that mean?” You may also find trick-ortreaters on your doorstep on October 31st with blue pumpkin candy buckets. Blue isn’t your typical Halloween color, so there has to be more to it, right?
In recent years, a blue Halloween bucket has become an unofficial signifier for kids with autism and autism awareness. People started posting on Facebook and other forms of social media to bring awareness to the practice as early as 2018. It’s important to note that some children with autism may be nonverbal. Because of this, saying “trick or treat!” as soon as the door is opened may not happen, but that doesn’t mean the child doesn’t deserve the best Halloween candy you can buy. Seeing the blue bucket and being aware is the most important step! A little knowledge and kindness will go a long way for these kids and their parents! Teal pumpkins raise awareness for children with food allergies and food-related medical conditions. It’s an important issue to think about when it comes to passing out candy with potential common allergens like gluten and peanuts, so be sure to ask when you see one.

Costume Sense: Avoid costumes that drag on the ground. While cute initially, costumes that drag can trip up little feet, get caught on bushes, and create a tussle that sometimes results in the child wanting to remove the costume. With the thought of comfort, pick costumes that are bathroom friendly as well. 4. Goody Bag: Think practical over cute when picking a trick or treat goody bag or container. Some of the seemingly fun ones sold in stores are heavy (before any treats are added) and others are too long and will drag on the ground. 5. Light Up the Night: Have each child carry or wear something lit, such as a flashlight, glow bracelet or necklace, or flashing attire for visibility. Light-up shoes are also practical, and ever-so-noticeable on a dark night. 6. Flexible Props: Only carry flexible props, such as knives, swords, ninja items, etc., that can’t cause injury if a kid accidentally falls. No play prop should resemble the real item; consider leaving them at home.
8 Tips for Safe Trick or Treating 1. Plan a Route: Adults should plan out a route in advance and check it during the daylight for such obstacles as broken sidewalks (or no sidewalks), construction timber, or other obstacles that could trip up trick or trickers. 2. Comfortable Shoes: Require well-fitting shoes to be worn, preferably sneakers. Kids should wear sturdy shoes and not the princess high-heel,

Walking: Trick or treaters should walk, not run, and should never cut across lawns or driveways. Obstacles could exist that aren’t readily visible in the evening.

We also want to say, “Thank You!” to the residents that received the friendly reminders with understanding and support in maintaining the beauty of your homes and investments. Our role in the Community Standards department is to help ensure the community adheres to the covenant standards as set forth in the governing documents. If you receive a letter, the best thing you can do is to contact us so that we can assist in any way possible, or offer timeline extensions if necessary. Our goal is to establish a professional relationship through communication, commitment and caring for our residents. As we continue to grow there may be violations we miss. In the event there is an issue you would like to report, you may do so by filing a Confidential Incident/Violation Report, which can be obtained online, or at our Community Management Office located at 525 W. Victoria Trails Boulevard. You may also call our office at 386-738-2112.
Welcome to the Team Michael! I’d like to introduce you all to Michael Lemke. He was brought on to join the Community Standards team. Michael comes to Victoria Park with over 26 years of experience in corrections in two states and he is a retired warden. Michael also worked in the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office for a year and

half in communications (911 dispatch/call taking). He is married to his lovely wife, Melissa and is the proud father to 24-year-old twins, as well as a chihuahua. Irrigation Daylight saving time begins on Sunday, November 7th, so make sure to check/change your irrigation clocks. Maintenance days for running your sprinkler systems are every Wednesday from 11am to 2pm and the first and third Saturday of the month from 11am to 2pm.
Garbage and Recycling Tuesdays are pickups for landscaping materials; Fridays are for waste and recycling pickup. Before you put out any large items, make arrangements with GFL Environmental (formerly WCA Waste Management) by calling 1-800-535-9533 or 386-774-6162 and ask for bulk pickup. As a reminder, on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas there will be no pickups due to those holidays; regular pickup will be completed one day later.

Vinyl fences or white picket fences in Victoria Commons are required to be pressure washed when dirty/moldy.

The first baby in Victoria Park has graduated from high school! Ashley Sutherland graduated from Father Lopez and is now attending Florida Southern College to study Graphic Design. Ashley is the oldest of five girls. One of the most treasured things about my job is watching all of my kids grow. It has been such a blessing to watch Ashley flourish into the young beautiful women she has become. Ashley, we all wish you nothing but great success and happiness in your years to come!
