Letter From the Lifestyle Team

Fall is on the Way!

As we ease into the beautiful months of September and October, from early morning walks to evening gatherings under the gazebo, our community continues to thrive with opportunities to stay active, meet new friends, and celebrate the season together.

We invite you to lean into everything that makes life here so special—whether it’s joining a game of pickleball, cooling off with a fun social event, or just taking a quiet moment to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings. With events like Hula Night, community bike rides, chili tastings, and signature celebrations like Born to Rock and Pickleball Paradise Luau, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Be sure to check the calendar and stay connected as we make the most of these warm, joyful months together. We can’t wait to see you out and about at Esplanade at Madeira Ranch!

Furry Friends

Meet Baxter

LOVED BY ROB & BURGA PUCCI

Baxter, Esplanade’s Self-Appointed Mayor, isn’t just a dog; he’s practically a local celebrity. He’s an almost five-year-old Cairn Terrier with scruffy, brindle fur, and a strut that says, “I run this place,” Baxter knows every inch of the Esplanade neighborhood and most of its Members. His mornings are a well-structured routine: a good stretch, a dramatic full-body shake, and then it’s time to patrol. With his blue harness on and tail wagging like he’s keeping time for a parade, Baxter heads out to inspect his kingdom on his daily walk.

He checks every bush, mailbox, and squirrel hole like he’s going through a checklist. And the neighbors? Most know him. “Good morning, Baxter!” someone calls out. He doesn’t respond, but he acknowledges. Usually with a sniff of their shoe or a quick glance that says, “Nice to see you, neighbor.” Of course, he’s got enemies. Specifically, squirrels and lizards. Tiny, taunting, fast little buggers. If he senses one, Baxter will drop into full stealth mode. His head low, ears alert, paws creeping forward, and before you know it, the chase is on. He never catches one, but that’s beside the point. He’s keeping the neighborhood secure, and they’ll think twice next time.

The pickleball courts are his unofficial prize zone. If someone’s careless enough to leave behind a tennis or pickleball, it’s fair game. Baxter spots it from a mile away, swoops in, and grabs it like he’s just discovered gold. He carries it home like a war medal, gently but triumphantly. By the time he gets back, Baxter’s done his rounds, protected the neighborhood, accepted the admiration of his constituents, and retrieved a bonus ball or two. He flops down onto his bed with a satisfied sigh, chin on his trophy. It’s quiet now. Peaceful. Safe. Exactly how Mayor Baxter likes it.

Racquet Center

Join us this October for our 2nd Annual Pickled Pink event, where we combine fun, fitness, and philanthropy on the pickleball courts. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this special event is dedicated to raising funds for local breast cancer charities that support those in need right here in our community.

Whether you’re an experienced player or just picking up a paddle, all are welcome to participate or cheer on the sidelines. We’ll have themed decor, pink treats, and a whole lot of heart as we rally together for a cause that touches so many lives.

Let’s serve up some support, spread awareness, and make a difference—one game at a time.

Michael & Janet Evans

The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Resort Manager.

We are honored to introduce Michael and Janet Evans. Always smiling, their warmth is contagious—and it’s easy to see why. They radiate positivity and bring a true “no problem” vibe wherever they go.

Both born in Jamaica, Michael and Janet met in high school and instantly fell in love. After graduating in 1973, Michael moved to New York but couldn’t imagine life without Janet. In 1974, he returned to Jamaica to marry her. They were just 18 years old. Last December, they joyfully celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Janet joined Michael in New York in 1977, where she worked at a bank and attended New York City Community College until the birth of their daughter, Dionne, in 1978.

Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from City College, City University of New York. In 1979, he accepted a position with the California Department of Transportation. The couple bought a car and drove cross-country to Los Angeles. Janet later completed her Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from Los Angeles Community College in 1982.

Unable to afford a home in Los Angeles, they moved to Sacramento in 1984 and purchased their first house. Their son, Justin, was born the following year.

Michael and Janet both dedicated their careers to public service,

retiring from the State of California with 40 and 30 years of service, respectively.

“We are very happy and blessed to be living in Esplanade at Madeira Ranch. Everyone we meet is so inviting. A big shoutout to Billy Gougherty and his team. They are doing a fantastic job! We are enjoying our Golden Years on Vacation every Day.”

Watch a Bat Ballet

Did you know bats make great neighbors? Bats are the only flying mammal in the world—and they’re fantastic neighbors! These nighttime flyers can eat hundreds of mosquitoes in an hour and often swoop through backyards, over ponds, or near streetlights at dusk. With more than 40 bat species in the U.S., you might spot a few outside your doorstep. Want to help local wildlife like these pollinators thrive? Try adding a bat house to your yard! For wildlife and bat watching tips, visit thegreenhour.org/activity/watch-a-bat-ballet. The photo is a native species of bat called the lesser long-nosed bat. Photo credit: Sandra Rothenberg.
