Lemon Lavender Gin Rickey
A light and refreshing cocktail that blends bright citrus with delicate floral notes creating a perfectly balanced drink that is both tart and subtly sweet.
INGREDIENTS
» 3 ounces gin
» 4 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice
» 2 tablespoons honey
» 4 ounces seltzer water
» 2 sprigs lavender
» 2 wedges of lemon
DIRECTIONS
1. Pour gin, lemon juice, and honey over ice in a cocktail shaker and shake well.
2. Strain into two glasses filled with ice. Top with seltzer.
3. Garnish each glass with a sprig of lavender and a slice of lemon.

Maggie is an eight-year-old Boxer born on January 21, 2018.
When you travel, do they travel with you?
When we travel, Maggie comes with us unless we are traveling abroad. When we rescued Maggie, we were traveling in our motorhome, so she is definitely a pup on the go.
What are a few amazing qualities about your furry best friend?
Maggie has amazing blue eyes that she uses against us every single day. She loves all people and will lick anyone who gets close enough.
How long has your pet been a part of your family?
We welcomed Maggie to our family in September of 2024.
What is their favorite treat?
Dad’s breakfast chicken sausage.
Tell us a fun story involving your pet!
Maggie was originally rescued by a couple in Georgia from a puppy mill in 2020. We saw a post on Facebook in a Boxer Lovers group to find her a new home after her parents had both passed away within months of each other. We arranged to meet Maggie, and the rest is history. One of Maggie’s quirks is that she does not like to be on the furniture with us—that’s a first! She sleeps in her own bed and rarely gets on the couch.

Why did you choose Palmetto and Esplanade at Artisan Lakes? Is your residency full-time or part-time? If part-time, where else do you spend your time?
After retiring in June 2014, we spent several winters in Mexico. In 2018, we tried Sarasota instead and quickly realized Florida had everything we loved: sunshine, warmth, and beautiful surroundings. Over the next two months, we explored communities from Starkey Ranch to Port Charlotte before choosing Esplanade at Artisan Lakes as our home. We now live here full time, returning to Michigan each summer to visit our daughter, Dana, and our granddaughters— Autumn (19), Paige (17), and Grace (16).
How long have you lived at Esplanade at Artisan Lakes? We closed on our home in November of 2018 and have lived here for the past seven years.
What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Are you in a club? Do you attend any classes/clinics? Also, tell us your hobbies. We help the community by creating event slideshows, assisting with the golf cart parade (including mapping the route and occasionally leading), and organizing regular golf outings. We also stay active with the Total Body Train group at the Amenity Center. In our free time, we enjoy dinners with friends, theatre at Florida Studio Theatre, and exploring Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, and Sarasota.
Tell us about your family and current or past professions: Our daughter Dana lives in Michigan with her three daughters— Autumn (college freshman), Paige (high school junior), and Grace (high school sophomore). We sadly lost our son in 2011 at age 33 to Type 1 Diabetes, and he is deeply missed. In Michigan, I worked at Perry Drug Stores and later in data processing for Oakland County, while Sue was an elementary school teacher.
What is the best advice you have ever received or given?
In our early 30s, living on one income, an advisor told us, “You can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip.” The next week, we started contributing $10 a week to a 401(k)—and through consistency and compounding, Sue and I were able to retire comfortably in this community.
What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Are you in a club? Do you attend any classes/clinics? Also, tell us your hobbies. We have attended a Book Club meeting and a couple of self-help/ awareness classes. I enjoy reading and writing, interior design, and music. We love live music shows and attending live sporting events. Robert is a skilled drummer.
Tell us something that might surprise people or anything else you’d like to share!
Sue and I love traveling to the Caribbean islands. We enjoy the warm weather, aqua-blue waters, and the welcoming people who make each trip memorable. We have enjoyed many adventures together including parasailing, flown in gliders in California, taken hot air balloon rides, zip-lined in Mexico, gone scuba diving throughout Mexico and Jamaica, and even completed a tandem skydiving jump with our two college kids.

Esparilla FEATURING BIG BROTHER BAND
Members gathered for a spirited Gasparilla-inspired evening celebrating Tampa’s iconic pirate tradition, featuring live music by Big Brother Band. A costume contest showcased attendee creativity, with Shannon Irmen winning Best Women’s Costume, Richard Dixon awarded Best Men’s Costume, and Sandra and Orlando Ramos named Best Couples Costume. Dan Mateja also won the evening’s scavenger hunt, adding to the fun.
Water EXERCISE CLASS
Members participated in a 45-minute in-pool workshop focused on using water to support fitness goals such as reducing pain, improving balance, and building strength. The session emphasized body awareness and simple adjustments to suit individual needs.
Paint & Sip BASKET FULL OF BLOOMS
Members gathered for a relaxed and engaging Paint & Sip led by our very own, Lynn Harris. Attendees created a cheerful bicycle with a basket of flowers while spending an evening immersed in creativity and relaxation.
Pop-Up COFFEE CART
Members stopped by the mobile coffee cart to enjoy freshly crafted beverages and connect with neighbors. From classic lattes and Americanos to favorites like caramel macchiatos, iced matcha lattes, and hot cocoa with toasted marshmallow, there was something for everyone.

Firemen Appreciation Brigade
Led by neighbors Dorene Mallard and Virginia Stephenson, the Firemen Appreciation Brigade was created as a simple way for our community to say thank you for the hard work and commitment these firefighters show every day. Firefighters at Station 5 work 24-hour shifts and often provide their own meals and snacks during that time. Through the Firemen Appreciation Brigade, Members help brighten their day by delivering thoughtful items that show our gratitude. Donations can be simple and heartfelt, including items such as candy, snacks, sodas, coffee, home-baked goods, prepared meals, or even gift cards for meals. Every contribution— big or small—is appreciated and helps support the firefighters who serve our community. Esplanade is proud to welcome Sarah Santa, National Culinary & Beverage Experience Leader, whose passion for wellness and the culinary arts brings a fresh, inspiring dimension to our community programming. With a background in Public Health from the University of Florida and nearly a decade immersed in Orlando’s vibrant food culture, Sarah has built a career around helping people connect more deeply, and joyfully, with what they eat.
As a certified nutrition consultant, culinary educator, and Level 1 Olive Oil Sommelier, Sarah blends science, storytelling, and hands on technique to show how flavor can be a powerful pathway to wellness. Through her work, she has crafted experiences that celebrate nourishment, creativity, and the belief that healthy eating should always feel exciting and accessible.

Esplanade is proud to welcome Marco Marini, National Culinary & Beverage Experience Leader, whose spirited Italian roots and decades of culinary leadership bring a bold new energy to our culinary experiences. Raised in Porto Santo Stefano on the Tuscan coast and trained in restaurant and hotel management, Marco blends old world tradition with modern technique, global curiosity, and the warm hospitality he’s known for.
As a Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinary Administrator, Marco has spent his career shaping unforgettable dining programs, including the opening of the first Bahama Bar and Culinary Center at Esplanade Lakewood Ranch. His classes are lively, story driven, and hands on, inviting Members to explore iconic dishes from around the world through the lens of culture, craft, and culinary spirit.
