Baie welkom by ons 78ste uitgawe van ons gemeenskapsblad OVERdeBERG. Augustusmaand is Vrouemaand en hiérmee dan ons opregte dank en waardering aan elke vrou daarbuite vir dit wat julle beteken vir en doen in ons gemeenskappe. Dit word opreg waardeer.

In hiérdie uitgawe van OVERdeBERG is daar weer heelwat om te sien sowel as lees. Die skolenuus is weer volop en gaan loer gerus om te sien wat by ons skole gebeur. Ons kuier weer lekker in die kombuis met twee heerlike resepte en die gemeenskapsdagboek is ook weer gevul met gebeurlikhede dwarsoor ons Overbergstreek waarvan julle ‘n nota kan maak as julle graag van die geleenthede wil gaan bywoon. Daar is ‘n klein gedeelte rondom die geskiedenis van Vrouedag in Suid-Afrika en gedurende Augustus gaan ons ‘n paar artikels plaas oor vroue in ons gemeenskap wat ‘n verskil maak. Gaan lees ook die interessante gedeelte oor die studie rondom die plastiekbesoedeling langs ons kus op bladsy 11. World Ranger Day celebrated World Ranger Day is celebrated on 31 July every year to honour the meaningful work of rangers and guides who protect our nature reserves, parks and wetlands for future generations. Vrydag 6 Augustus 2021 Metode vir die witsous: Smelt die botter in ’n kastrol oor medium tot lae hitte. Klop die meel by en roer tot die mengsel ’n pasta vorm en effens goudbruin is, sowat 5 minute. Klop die helfte van die melk geleidelik by die meelmengsel en laat prut oor medium hitte. Kook en roer tot die mengsel dik en glad is, sowat 10 – 15 minute. Verwyder van die hitte en roer die oorblywende melk, droë kruie en die helfte van die kaas by. Meng die tuna, gemengde groente, knoffel, suurlemoensap en pesto in ’n bak saam. Smeer ’n dun laag witsous oor die bodem van die ge-smeerde bak, gevolg deur ’n laag lasagnevelle. Smeer die helf-te van die tunamengsel oor die lasagnevelle. Herhaal met die lasagnevelle en tunamengsel, en eindig met die oorblywende kruiesous booor. Strooi die res van die kaas bo-oor. Bak in die oond vir 30 – 35 minute. Stel die oond op rooster en laat die lasagne verbruin vir 2 – 3 minute.
Tunalasagne Bestanddele: 3 x 170 g blikkies Lucky Star Tuna (gedreineer) 250 g lasagnevelle 1½ koppie (375 ml) gevriesde gemengde groente 2 teelepels (10 ml) gekapte vars knoffel sap van 1 suurlemoen ¼ koppie (60 ml) pesto
Witsous: 3 eetlepels (45 ml) botter 3 eetlepels (45 ml) meel 1½ – 2 koppie (375 – 500 ml) melk (effens verhit) 1 teelepel (5 ml) droë Italiaanse kruie 1½ koppie (375 ml) gerasperde cheddarkaas

Bestanddele:
Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C en smeer ’n oondvaste bak. Bring ’n groot pot met effens gesoute water tot kookpunt oor hoë hitte. Voeg ’n paar lasagnevelle op ’n slag by.

190 ml koekmeel 30 ml suiker 65 ml ongesoute botter 125 ml fyn klapper

Kook die pasta onbedek, terwyl jy nou en dan roer, tot gaar maar steeds al dente, sowat 8 – 10 minute. Dreineer in ’n vergiettes. Resepte & foto’s: RSG Resepte
Metode: Kors: Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C. Voer die oondbak of bakplaat uit met bakpapier. Meng die meel en suiker bymekaar. Gebruik dan ‘n vurk om die botter in die meelmengsel in te sny totdat dit ‘n krummelrige mengsel is. Voeg dan die fyn klapper by, meng deur en druk stewig in die oondbak vas. Plaas in die oond en bak vir ongeveer 10 minute, of tot die randte begin verbruin. Vrugtevla: Meng die suiker en koekmeel bymekaar. Klits dan die eiers in die meel mengsel in tot ‘n homogene mengsel vorm. Klits die mango, pynappel en suurlemoenn sap in die eier mengsel in totdat die mengsel glad is. Giet die sapmengsel versigtig bo – oor die warm kors. Verlaag die oond temperatuur na 160°C en bak vir ‘n verdere 35 minute of tot die vla gestol is. Laat toe om af te koel vir 60 minute. Verkoel in die yskas vir ten minste 1 uur voordat dit in blokkies (3cm x 3cm) gesny word. 4

Helena Kriel in Graad 9 by Hoërskool Bredasdorp, is ‘n veelsydige leerder wat, ten spyte van die beperkings wat die COVID-pandemie meebring, op kultuurgebied haar heel beste gee. Sy het deurgedring na die finale rondte van die landswye Wêreldkennisolimpiade wat later vandeesmaand plaasvind. Sy neem vanaf 8 tot 10 Oktober aan die landsfinaal van die Nasionale Interskole Redenaarsliga SA deel (sy behaal ook 95,5% tydens aanlyn Provinsiale Rondte). Ook op formele musiekgebied vaar sy tans uitstekend. Sy word gekies vir die UNISA Musiekteorie-ererol vir haar uitmuntende prestasie vir Teorie Graad 3. Slegs kandidate wat meer as 90% behaal, kom in aanmerking hiervoor. Gedurende September sal sy haar UNISA Graad 5 Klaviereksamen in Hermanus aflê.
Andriëtte Roux School of Dance proudly informed us that Lara Miller (Hermanus High School Matric Learner 2020) was successful in her auditions at UCT and as a result, accepted as a second year Performance student. For first year students to continue their BmuS Dance Degree, they have to be successful at their audition, whereas unsuccessful students may not continue in Dance Performance. Baie geluk aan Streicher Swart van Hoërskool Swellendam, wat 'n derde plek verower het in die WC XCO-kampioenskappe wat vroeër gedurende Juniemaand aangebied is. We can confirm that Streicher Swart, along with the following cyclists have been awarded Western Cape Colours. Recipients of Western Cape Colours will represent Western Cape at an Inter Provincial competition to be held at the South African XCO Championships on the 25th of September 2021 in KZN. This Inter Provincial competition is regrettably a self-funded competition. Further details will be released. Baadjies op bome... Free on a tree... It warms the heart when one is able to bring joy to others. Gansbaai Tourism’s ‘Baadjies op Bome / Free on a Tree’ held on Saturday the 31st of July, was a big success and people were so grateful. At least 100 people are now no longer getting cold.
Women’s Day 2021 Every year, in August, our country marks Women’s Month. We also pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on the 9th of August 1956 in protest against the extension of the Pass Laws to women. A system meant to control women even further and reduce women to passive beings, at the mercy of men. We will celebrate this year’s Women Month under the theme: “Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights for an Equal Future”. The concept of Generation Equality is a global campaign and links South Africa to global efforts to achieve gender equality by 2030.

Women’s Month is a tribute not only to the thousands of women who marched on that day in 1956, but also a tribute to the pioneers of the women’s movement in this country, dating back to 1913, when women like Charlotte Maxeke led the way in establishing the ANC Women’s League and encouraging women to engage in the struggle for freedom. Pioneers include Cissy, Jaynab and Amina Gool, who were amongst the leaders of the National Liberation League and the Non-European United Front of the 1930’s. The names of Ray Alexander Simons, Elizabeth Mafikeng and Elizabeth Abrahams will always be associated with the struggles of women. In the 1940s Amina Pahad and Gadijah Christopher, who were amongst the first volunteers to occupy the site of the 1946 Passive Resistance Campaign on Umbilo Road in Durban cannot go unnoticed.

Goeie nuus vanaf die Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA Two healthy buffalo calves were born in the past few days to two of our young heifers, progeny of our main bull, Mooibul. That brings our herd total to 22 buffaloes. At the end of July the horticulture team at the Genadendal Mission Museum was responsible for the neat appearance of our Museum gardens. Marine pollution along our coast Research led by Prof. Peter Ryan, Director of the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, looked at the sources and origins of South Africa's beach litter to tackle marine pollution. Part of this study was done in Gansbaai at Die Plaat, and Walker Bay. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust were grateful for the opportunity to meet with Prof Ryan and his students and share some of the stats from Project Storm – the storm catchment nets aimed at addressing ocean bound waste. Statistics help identify litter sources which can help to address the problem: A total of 13240 bottles and other containers were collected from 145 km of shoreline at the 32 study sites. Bottles from 78 countries were found on South African beaches. “Dumping of plastics at sea has been banned since 1989, and the study calls on the International Maritime Organisation to tighten regulations to ensure ships — “particularly Asian shipping lines” — dispose of their waste at ports, rather than at sea.”

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert A TREASURE MAP OR NOT? Quite recently, two questions came up when communicating with a well-known Agulhas resident, “Did the Dutch East India Company (VOC) draw maps of treasure wrecks? And, did they call it that?” A safe and evasive answer would be, “more than likely, yes”. However, according to the historical records on the shipwrecks lost around Cape Agulhas and today resting in the light of Africa’s most southern lighthouse, this appears not to have been the case.

Sections of 17th Century maps indicating shipwreck positions For the shipwrecks lying in the Overberg area, it would seem that they did not draw up maps exclusively for so-called ‘treasure wrecks’. Rather, what appears to have been the norm, when sending expeditions to places 'unknown' to them at the time, it was to give such expedition leaders strict orders to keep a Journal, as well as to indicate the position on a map of the time. In accordance with this protocol, when the first two salvage teams were sent to the southern tip of Africa and the shipwrecked Zoetendaal in 1673, their orders were to go by LAND and SEA and for both to keep good journals of the position and all that they experienced and did there.
By the time the Meermin was lost in 1766, they did not even insist on a journal. By then, with all the farmers applying their agricultural skills in the Overberg area, one can safely assume that the Zoetendaals Valley and surroundings were well known by then. The same can be said in the case of the next two treasure ship losses, Nicobar (1783) and Brederode (1785). The historical records clearly indicate that keeping journals and plotting the routes taken on maps, were primarily reserved for DISCOVERY TRIPS made into the unknown.

Some nine years later, when a salvage expedition was sent to the Joanna (a new unknown area) again, they were instructed to keep journals and to plot the route taken onto the map of the day. In such journals, their exact daily trips from one water source to the next was recorded, as well as important sights and experiences. The third salvage excursion to the South was commissioned to recover the reputedly large treasure of the Nostra Senhora de los Milagros (again a new unknown area). This time, although they were not expected to plot their route on a map, no less than two journals were kept and handed in on their return. Today, both are safely housed in the Cape Town archives. In both these journals, the daily weather, undertakings and accomplishments were well recorded. Some 36 years later, the next expedition to Cape Agulhas was undertaken. This time the Dutch ship, Schonenberg, was the reason for no less than four trips taken there and back. Of these, three were thoroughly journaled and these documents too have stood the test of time. 16
