Goeiedag en welkom by nog ‘n uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Wat ‘n voorreg is dit nog steeds om hiérdie blad saam te stel en te publiseer vir julle om te lees. Dit is alreeds on 56ste uitgawe en die blad gaan van krag tot krag. Dit wys ‘n mens net dat positiewe nuus en beriggewing altyd beter is as al die oordonderende negatiwiteit wat deur ander publikasies gepubliseer word.

Op ons voorblad hierdie week het ons ‘n pragtige lesersfoto van D’Ulene Vermeulen van Havila Photography. Dit wys ons net hoe mooi die goue uur wel kan wees. Dit is nou die uur net voor die son ondergaan. OVERdeBERG is hiérdie week so vol dat selfs Jakkals & Wolf op bladsy 13 moes plekmaak vir nuus, maar volgende week is hulle terug met kaperjolle daar doer in die Bosveld! Ons berig hierdie week oor die 21 jaar wat die Flower Valley Conservation Trust al hul goeie en belangrike werk in die Overberg verrig. Daar word ook weer heerlik saamgekuier in die kombuis met nog twee watertandlekker resepte en ons het heelwat nuus van ons skole om met julle te deel. ‘World Water Day’ word in 2021 op die 22ste Maart gevier en ons het ‘n interessante artikel daaroor op bladsy 10.

Ons het ook ‘n berig oor die afsterwe van mnr. Sammy Banda. Hy was die skoolhoof van Mispah Skool vir LSEN op Elim, bekende gospelkunstenaar en diep gelowige mens. Hy is skielik op die 1ste Maart oorlede en ons het so ietsie oor hom geplaas op bladsy 11. Jimmy Herbert is dié week weer terug met nog so bietjie Overbergse geskiedenis en hy bring vir ons die inligting rondom die Bredasdorp Skeepswrakmuseum en die rol wat oorlede Hettie Lotz gespeel het. 3 2006: Flower Valley Farm is hit by a devastating fire that destroyed more than 45,000 hectares in the Walker Bay area – most of this pristine fynbos. The fire affects many fynbos suppliers and their picking teams. Moreover, Flower Valley Farm itself loses a large portion of its Afromontane forest, one of the reasons behind the Stinkhoutsbos Forest Restoration Project happening today. The Trust sets up new livelihood opportunities for harvesters through fynbos paper making.
Jacques Louw The Flower Valley Conservation Trust is celebrating 21 years of protecting natural fynbos landscapes and improving livelihoods across the Fynbos Biome; and providing better quality and access to Early Childhood Development services for children in the Overstrand district. Their journey started in 1999 on Flower Valley Farm (the home of the Trust), based just outside Gansbaai in the Western Cape. Back then, their staff contingent came to 5 people, who were responsible for managing the farm. Over the next 21 years, the Flower Valley Conservation Trust team grew to 20. And today, while they’re based on Flower Valley Farm, they work across the Cape Floral Kingdom.
Photo: Flower Valley Conservation Trust 2011: Fynbos Retreat, the tourism joint venture between Flower Valley and Grootbos, is officially launched in November. Fynbos Retreat is situated on Witvoetskloof Farm, offering self-catering accommodation facilities for visitors and tourists. Fynbos Retreat is well-received at the launch. It closes its doors to the public in 2019, to become a Grootbos Foundation research hub for students. 2012: Flower Valley, as coordinator of ABI, starts coordinating the ABI Alien Clearing Project, following the launch of the Land User Incentive Scheme by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Funding is secured for the next three years to clear invasive alien plants on the Agulhas Plain. The Flower Valley Sustainable Harvesting Code of Best Practice for wild harvesters is included in an industry-wide best principle guideline. The Code is included as part of the South African Protea Producers and Exporters Association (SAPPEX) best practice guidelines for the industry.
Photo: Flower Valley Conservation Trust It all started for Flower Valley Conservation Trust when a fynbos farm was threatened with conversion to agriculture. In order to protect this 540-hectare farm, urgent action was needed. Let’s look at their story… 1999: With talk that the area is to be converted to vineyards, a concerned individual, Carol Blumenthal approaches Fauna & Flora International (FFI) for support to buy Flower Valley Farm, based just outside Gansbaai. FFI purchases the farm, an area of 540 hectares, and sets up Flower Valley Conservation Trust to manage the farm. From the start, the Flower Valley Conservation Trust helps to care for the children of fynbos harvesters, farm workers and surrounding families while they’re at work. This was essentially the start of the Trust’s work in early childhood development, which continues today. 2003: Flower Valley Conservation Trust is mandated through the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) to investigate ABI’s second objective: ‘Ecologically, socially and economically sustainable harvesting of wild fynbos is demonstrated as a viable land-use on Agulhas Plain’. This sets Flower Valley on the path to develop the Sustainable Harvesting Programme, a programme based on research, science and wide participation. The outcome is awarded a ‘highly satisfactory’ rating by the end of the project, in 2010. Flower Valley Conservation Trust buys the neighbouring farm, Witvoetskloof, with funding secured from Fauna & Flora International. This farm is home to many highly threatened fynbos species, many found only on Witvoetskloof and nowhere else in the world.

2013: The packshed that sells sustainably harvested fynbos, Fynsa, closes its doors. The closure, while disappointing, sets Flower Valley on a new path to develop new partnerships and renewed support for the Sustainable Harvesting Programme across the supply chain. At the same time, Flower Valley receives new donor support from the European Union and the WWF Nedbank Green Trust to roll out the Sustainable Harvesting Programme beyond the Agulhas Plain – the initial pilot area. Seekoskerrie Bestandele: 15 ml sonneblomolie 50 ml groen kerriepasta (sien resep) 8 sprietuie (fyngekap) 10 ml koljandersade (gerooster) 10 ml komynsaadjies (gekneus) 1 ml fyn naeltjies 30 ml vars knoffel (fyngekap) 30 ml vars gemmerwortel (fyngekap) 2 lemmetjies se skil (fyngerasper) 15 ml lemmetjiesap 5 ml sout 325 ml hoenderaftreksel 1 blikkie klapperroom 65 ml suiker 600 g seekos en vis soos garnale, mossels, kalamariringe, ferm wit vis in 4 cm blokke gesny (skoon) 250 ml murgpampoentjies (in dun ringe gesny) 250 ml suikerertjies (heel in die peul) 250 ml tatsoi of spinasie (kleinergeskeur) 125 ml brokkoli blommetjies 125 ml fyngekapte pietersielie 125 koljanderblare (grofgekap) 65 ml kruisementblare (fyngekap) 15 – 45 ml mielieblom (indien nodig) Metode: Verhit olie in die pan. Braai die kerriepasta, sprietuie, koljandersade, komyn en naeltjies liggies in die olie. Voeg die knoffel en gemmer by en braai vir so 30 sekondes of tot geurig. Voeg nou die lemmetjiesap en skil, sout, aftreksel, suiker en klapperroom by. Laat dit effens afkook tot dit begin verdik, of verdik met mielieblom gemeng met bietjie water tot glad. Voeg nou die hoen-der, suikerertjies en brokkoli by en laat dit kook vir 4 minute. Voeg dan die res van die groente by en laat liggies kook. Sit jou seekos in. Proe en sit in wat jy voel dit nog kort.
Seekos-sop Bestandele: 1 x 405 g blikkie gekonsentreerde tamatieroomsop 1 x 400 g blikkie ertjiesop 1 x 385 g blikkie lite ingedampte melk 250 ml voorbereide vis- of hoenderaftreksel 1 x 68 g pakkie Gourmet Seafood a’la Crème soppoeier 1.2 kg gemengde vis: gelyke dele ontvelde bevrore skelvisblokkies, gevriesde calamari-ringe en geblansjeerde mossels in halwe skulpe 125 – 200 ml room 65 ml gekapte knoffel- of plein grasuie (chives) Metode: Sit die tamatieroomsop, ertjiesop, ingedampte melk en aftreksel in a groot kastrol en bring tot kookpunt terwyl jy die mengsel af en toe roer. Meng die soppoeier met ‘n bietjie kouewater tot glad en voeg dit by die sop. Klits met ‘n draadklitser totdat dit dikgekook is. Voeg die skelvis by, sit ‘n deksel op en kook op medium vir 2 minute. Roer die calamari en mossels by, maak weer toe en kook vir nog 2 minute. Wees versigtig: die sop brand baie maklik aan, so hou die hitte matig, roer gereeld stadig deur en kook eerder te min as te veel. Verwyder nou die sop van die hitte en laat dit toe staan vir ten minste nog 2 minute om die gaarmaakproses van die vis te voltooi. Roer dan genoeg room na smaak by en bedien. Lewer 8 porsies met lekker groot, bros kaas-croûtons. Jy kan ook na smaak fyngekapte knoffel en groen brandrissies byvoeg en natuurlik, afhangende of jy brandrissies gebruik of nie, die sop verder na smaak geur met fyngekapte basieliekruid of koljanderblare. Flower Valley Conservation Trust… 21 Continued from page 3 The Flower Valley Early Childhood Development Programme enjoys new donor support, launching its Nurture project. Working in a spirit of collaboration and partnership, it focuses on supporting five ECD centres in and around Gansbaai. 2015: The Flower Valley Early Childhood Development Programme launches a home-based care programme in Pearly Beach and Baardskeerdersbos. This allows Flower Valley to provide support to children who can’t attend Early Childhood Development centres. The Field Guide for Wild Flower Harvesting, compiled by Flower Valley Conservation Trust and the Universities of Newcastle and Durham in the United Kingdom, is published. It specifically focuses on species found and picked on the Agulhas Plain. The guide is also translated into Afrikaans and Xhosa. 2018: The Flower Valley Early Learning Centre on Flower Valley Farm closes its doors. The main reason is rising transport costs, to bring children to the site on the farm. The site is transformed into a hub to facilitate environmental education. Flower Valley launches the i-Fynbos application – a tool to help landowners and harvesters monitor their harvesting impacts over time. The app is the first of its kind in the fynbos industry, and is supported through funding from the Durham and Newcastle Universities. 2019: Flower Valley launches a new invasive alien clearing programme in the Agulhas Plain – following on from the work already undertaken since 2012. The project is an Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) project, implemented by the Trust. We clear 5,700 hectares in the first year, and the project employs 144 people. A wildfire once again affects Flower Valley Farm. This time, however, only the lower reaches of the farm are affected by the December blaze. 2020: Flower Valley turned 21 years old and they continue to work towards their vision: A fynbos-filled future for life and livelihoods. Children should not play with water, the old people want to drink it; the same applies to adults. Every year World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. It is an annual United Nations observance day that highlights the importance of freshwater and seeks to focus on the global water crisis.

A 60 million year old tale Water is the natural resource and the main constituent of this Planet Earth and one of the necessities for every living being on this planet. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year the focus focus is on the theme Valuing Water to include the environmental and socio-cultural value placed on water resources and is about what water means to people, its true value and how this essential life resource can be protected. Around 60 million years ago, something amazing happened in the Cape: dragonflies started making themselves at home in our fynbos and wetlands. In the lifespan of dragonfly species, this is a recent occurrence, given that many of these species are about 300 million years old. In the Nuwejaars wetlands, dragonflies play the crucial role they are supposed to play - catching and eating pesky mosquitos, doing their part to keep these and other insect numbers in check. Dragonflies can only thrive where wetlands and waterscapes support them. Wetlands should ideally be healthy, or at least be resilient, to provide a sanctuary for dragonflies. Bear in mind that dragonflies spend up to two years underwater in larval state (some even longer) and during this time, are likely to eat tadpoles and even small fish. Healthy waters therefore ensure their survival from a young age. That is why dragonflies and damselflies (and other sensitive species) are considered an indicator species for good water quality. In January 2021, dragonfly and damselfly expert, Corrie du Toit, visited some of the wetlands of the Nuwejaars - in particular those wetlands to be expanded and rehabilitated in a project supported by WWF South Africa. Totsiens Sammy Banda 1 Maart 2021 was 'n baie hartseer dag in die geledere van Mispah Skool vir LSEN, waar daar op onverwagse wyse afskeid geneem is van die geliefde Prinsipaal, mnr. Sammy Banda.

Banda is skielik oorlede na 'n baie kort siekbed in die Otto Du Plessis op Bredasdorp en ons harte gaan uit aan sy eggenote, kinders, familie, vriende & kollegas in die onderwys. Mnr. Banda was sedert 1 Oktober 2019 die prinsipaal by Mispah Skool vir LSEN en het sedert sy aankoms ’n deurlopend merkwaardige impak gemaak by dié skool. Ons kan net die Here dank vir die voorreg wat Mispah Skool gehad het om mnr. Banda as leier van die instansie te hê. Hy was 'n leier van formaat en sy stem in die gospelgeledere sal dan ook voortleef met die liedjies wat hy met passie aan die Here opgedra het om die woord van God te verkondig.

Mispah Skool se personeel is geskok en in rou gedompel, maar ons vertrou wat God gedoen het, is welgedaan. As personeel en leerders wil hulle ook mev. Banda en die familie bemoedig en hul ondersteuning aan hulle toevertrou in hierdie bedroefde tyd. Nooit sou ons kon dink dat Mispah Skool so skielik van hul baie geliefde prinsipaal moes afskeid neem nie. Mag U siel in vrede rus mnr. Samuel John Banda.

Topklas rekenaargeletterdheid by Laerskool Bredasdorp
Die Beheerliggaam van Laerskool Bredasdorp het in 1998 die besluit geneem om ‘n pos te skep vir ‘n permanente IT-opvoeder wat verantwoordelik is vir rekenaargeletterdheidsklasse vir Gr. R tot 7. Rekenaars en tegnologie is die toekoms en dit is belangrik om ons kinders van jongs af bloot te stel en die nodige vaardighede aan te leer. Die rekenaarklasse word so beplan dat elke leerder 1 uur lank per week blootgestel word aan rekenaartegnologie (teoreties en prakties). Laerskool Bredasdorp het sedert 1999 verskeie maatskappye en materiaal gebruik om by te bly met die vinniggroeiende tegnologie. Die nuwe tendens is robotika en kodering, wat ook sterk ondersteun word deur die WKOD. (Ons skool is ingesluit as een van die loodsskole vir 2021). Laerskool Bredasdorp het egter alreeds sedert Jan 2020 begin om kodering as deel van rekenaargeletterdheid aan ons leerders bekend te stel.

History from the Overberg Continued from page 16 These were always interactive lectures where those attending could also contribute to every topic. The main purpose was to have patrons come to the museum and thus help keep the local history alive. Another of Hettie's dreams also came true… "A trip down memory lane" was put together. One of the relatively unused outer buildings was converted into an added artefact display area. All the artefacts brought down from the loft (and others) were put on display in this building under this proud title, "A trip down memory lane". Next Hettie and Odette had the Church display section (shipwreck hall) in their sights. They felt it needed a change in the form of updating and renewal and added significant artefacts. First in line was the Arniston display where informative pictures, illustrations and text where added on the sides of all six vertical display areas. This contributed to a greater understanding of all these items. The next display that was revamped was that of HMS Birkenhead where Hettie convinced the wellknown diver, the late Charlie Shapiro, to donate a few additional artefacts. Next, the display areas were revamped by adding mirrors and glass panels. Here the museums porcelain, crockery and glassware could be displayed. The museum's artillery collection of cannon (x3), gunades (x2), a mortar and signal guns (x4) was next. The team even succeeded in getting a gunade to be returned 'home'. This specific gunade is postulated to have originated from the wreck of the Duke of Northumberland lost on the western corner of Struys Bay in 1838. A certain W.J. van As and G.H. Wolhuter salvaged this gun and, later in 1880, donated it to the town Robertson where it had been proudly on display ever since. I have a dear university colleague whose present motto is, "spared to serve". In similar vein, Hettie Lotz voiced her commitment, "I still have a lot to do here and hopefully I will stay alive long enough to get the Shipwreck Hall into a better condition and find many more artefacts that will 'match' our theme". Although, after a full 15 years of service to our museum, Hettie Lotz unexpectedly and sadly passed away due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in late December 2020, she achieved and contributed highly significantly to our museum. Rest in peace dear Hettie… we are forever indebted and will profoundly miss you. Pragtige prestasie uit Elim Lunette Coetzee Suzette Arends is 'n pragtige en skrander leerder van Elim. Sy het ook verbasend goed gevaar in die 2020 matriekjaar wat, alhoewel vol uitdagings was, pragtige resultate gelewer het. Sy is ingetoë en uiters beleefd. Die Elimers is baie trots op die vordering wat Suzette en ander leerders ten spyte van die uitdagende jaar getoon het. Die klas van 2020 moes verbasend vinnig skouer aan die wiel sit en gefokus bly. Sy was ook 'n Konfirmand vir die 2019/2020 jaar en hulle kon nie voorgestel word op Palm Sondag 2020 nie. Hierdie aanneming het eers in Oktober plaasgevind. Sy word alke voorspoed en sukses in haar studie stigting toegewens. Suzette het die volgende met ons gedeel: “Ek gaan LLB (Regte) studeer by Universiteit van die Wes-Kaap. Ek hou van skoolwerk so dit was nie vir my moeilik of swaar om te leer vir eksamens nie. Op die platteland is hier nie baie geleenthede nie en jy moet hardwerk om bo uit te kom. Ek hou van lees en ek lees baie… dit help met opstelle wat jy op skool skryf en dit verbeter jou woordeskat. My raad aan die matrieks van 2021 is om te leer vir elke toets, selfs al lyk dit onbelangrik.”

History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum Our Overberg's very own Shipwreck Museum is just that, 'ours'. Not only did it come to be in 1971 through inspired locals, but also almost every single artefact on display was donated by Overbergers, or by those that held Overberg history dear to their hearts.
The Old Rectory has been recreated into a typical Strandveld townhouse. The bedroom was also furnished with yellowwood pieces, while the dining room is in Victorian and the kitchen is in Edwardian style. In the church and gardens, one finds maritime artefacts ranging from weighing over two tonnes cannons to small items like rare 17th century porcelain on display. The "waenhuis" (coach-house) behind the complex includes a stable with the traditional cobbled floor and a reed ceiling. The walls have been plastered with a mixture of puddled clay, straw and dung, with the traditional smeared dung floor. Hettie Lotz & our Shipwreck Museum Over the years, the museum has been blessed with some wonderful curators and Trustee chairpersons. A few of those that held the latter office, and that this author believes contributed most significantly to our museum were: Oom Herklaas Wessels, Professor Carl Lohann and recently passed, our dear Hettie Lotz. Like most institutions, the museum has known both good and bad times too. The worst state or condition it has ever been in was in 2009 when the present Manager, Odette Weir, took over in August.
This unique Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is the only one of its kind with the theme, "Shipwrecks along the dangerous southern Cape coast and their influence on the development of the Strandveld". The farm Langefontein was bought in 1837 for the purpose of building a new church for the residents of the southern part of the Overberg. In 1845 and 1865 the Old Rectory and Anglican Church were completed respectively. As recently as 1967, both buildings were declared National Monuments and four years later, they were converted for the purpose of a museum. It is here where the Museum is still housed today.
Like most institutions, the museum has known both good and bad times too. The worst state or condition it has ever been in was in 2009 when the present Manager, Odette Weir, took over in August. Odette literally took over a "sinking ship" as she was presented with, as Hettie Lotz put it, with "only four department employees (grossly understaffed), no financial resources, no services (electricity), and even no telephone connection". The explanatory text for the displays too was seen to be a bit outdated, not adequate or in some cases non-existent. Exhibitions were sadly neglected and in dire need of upkeep. One of our most resent chairpersons of the Trustee Committee of the Shipwreck Museum was also present to observe this shocking state of affairs. Hettie Lotz had originally joined the "Friends of the Museum" in February 2005. She was elected to the Friends Committee in June of that year and the following year she was chosen to head this committee as chairperson. From 2006, Hettie also served on the Board of Trustees of the Museum as the "Friends" representative. In 2010, she was officially appointed to the Board by the Minister and also chosen as Chairperson. It is over the last six years that the very effective Museum team, Chairperson Hettie Lotz and Museum Manager (curator) Odette Weir, took over our museum and built it up from 'rock bottom' to the impressive condition it is in today. Firstly, Hettie identified significant artefacts stored upstairs, which were either broken, neglected or in need of treatment for borers, no wood oil, etc. Hettie Lotz Husband Lotz (Hettie's other half) jumped in and immediately restored no less than five chairs and a mantel piece. Furthermore, she endeavoured to bring all the artefacts down to be displayed for all to see and enjoy, as was the hope and intention of the relevant donors. Another brainchild of Hettie was her "Uit Toeka se dae" that was hosted at the museum on a regular basis. For this event the museum would convince colourful Overberg individuals to give talks on different relevant topics of the past. Continued on page 14
