Goeiedag en welkom by nog ‘n propvol en positiewe uitgawe van ons gemeenskapsblad OVERdeBERG. Vandag is dit al uitgawe 55 en dit bly ‘n voorreg om die blad weekliks aan julle te bring, gevul met positiewe gedagtes en beriggewing. Baie dankie ook aan elkeen van OVERdeBERG se medewerkers vir die harde werk agter die skerms. Ek waardeer dit opreg.

In hiérdie week se uitgawe is daar ‘n bydrae oor Internasionale Vrouedag wat vanjaar op die 8ste Maart gevier word. Lees gerus op bladsy 3 meer hieroor. Dan kuier ons weer lekker in die kombuis met twee watertandlekker resepte en ons het ‘n bydrae oor die pragprestasie van Boeta Wessels, Dohne-Merinoboer van die plaas Karsrivier net buite Bredasdorp. Ons berig ook oor ‘n biodiversiteitsanalise wat onlang by Infanta gedoen is en daar is ‘n interessante bydra oor die bestuur van bobbejane in die Overberg. Soos gewoonlik is daar weer heelwat skolenuus en dit wissel van sport tot die matriekuitslae. Varklies Bestandele: 1,5kg varklies bakpoeier growwe sout 1 ui, grofgekap 1 wortel, grofgekap 6 knoffelhuisies, fyngemaak tiemie pietersielie salie 2 koppies water 1 bottel Savanna, of 2 – 3 koppies appelsap, afhangende van die grootte van die bak 1 koppie room

Metode:

Bestandele:

Maak diagonale (of diamant) snytjies in die vel van die varklies. Vryf dan die bakpoeier en growwe sout in die vel in. Plaas die ui, wortel, knoffel en kruie onder in ‘n groot oondskottel en plaas die varklies daarop, vel na bo.

600 g gevriesde kapokatappels Sout en peper Botter (opsioneel) 1 rol skilferkorsdeeg (puff pastry) 4 gaar varkworsies 20 ml melk (as dit nodig is) Sout en peper vir geur 250 ml gerasperde cheddarkaas

Voeg die water en Savanna of applesap by, maar maak seker dat die vel droog bly. Bak oop vir ‘n uur en ‘n half teen 160 °C. Haal uit en voeg enige groente by. Bak verder oop, vir nog ‘n uur en ‘n half.

Haal die varklies en groente uit en voeg ‘n koppie room by die vleissappe. Plaas in ‘n kastrol en laat dit kook totdat die sous verminder en verdik het. Bedien 6 porsies saam met groente. Resepte & foto’s: Marinda Kook

Metode: Berei die gevriesde kapokaartappel en geur na smaak met sout en peper. As jy daarna voel, sit soveel botter by as wat jy lus is. Laat effens afkoel. Op ‘n gesmeerde bakplaat vou jou deeg oop. Smeer ‘n laag kapokaartappels. Pak die varkworsies in ‘n lang ry op die aartappels. Smeer nog kapokaartappels. Strooi die kaas oor. Vou nou die deeg toe soos ‘n wors. Sny kepe in die deeg. Verf met melk of eier. Bak vir 40 minute by 180°C.

Oraloor Bredasdorp boer presteer All over Die Dohne-Merinostoetery Weska van mnr. Boeta Wessels van die plaas Karsrivier in die distrik Bredasdorp is aangewys as die Bobaastelery vir 2020. Dit is die derde keer dat die stoetery op dié wyse deur die DohneMerinotelersgenootskap van Suid-Afrika vereer is. Die tweejaarlikse toekenning is op die jaarvergadering van die genootskap in Bloemfontein gedoen. Wessels se pa, wyle mnr. Jurie Wessels, was by die vorige twee toekennings betrokke.

Dohne-Merinotelers wat deur die genootskap vir hul bydrae tot veeteelt vereer is. Van vlnr is mnre. Wikus Bekker van die Crux-telersgroep (Dohne-Merinoman van die jaar), Koos Vosloo (voorsitter van die genootskap) en Boeta Wessels, die Bobaasteler van die Jaar. Foto & berig: Johan Norval. Boeta behartig sedert 2011 die stoetery nadat hy en sy broer, Kosie, die boerderybedrywe verdeel het. Wessels se teeldoelwitte is die vrugbaarheid van sy moederlyne en wol van goeie gehalte. “Die bydrae van ’n ram met ’n goeie moeder beteken klaar meer as 50% van die sukses met die teelvordering van die kudde,” sê hy. Die genootskap het ’n Vrystaatse teler vereer as die DohneMerinoman van die Jaar. Hy is mnr. Wikus Bekker van die All-In -One-stoetery op die plaas Geluksdam by Edenburg. Hy is ook deel van die Crux-telersgroep. Hy is vereer vir sy sukses om Dohne-Merino-embrio’s na Suid-Amerika uit te voer.

Biodiversity assessment at Infanta Conservation Outcomes, CapeNature and the Overberg Renosterveld Conservation Trust performed a biodiversity assessment on a number of properties at Infanta, at the mouth of the Breede River - fantastic area with some amazing biodiversity value.

Baboon management in Overstrand Overstrand Municipality calls on residents and visitors to behave responsibly in their interactions with baboons and encourages neighbourhoods to find ways to live with the baboons.

Human Wildlife Solutions (HWS), who manages the Baboon Programme in towns in the Overstrand, would like to request all residents who own trees that bear fruit in neighbourhoods that are affected by baboon raidings, to remove the fruit from trees before it ripens. During the past three weeks there has been a marked increase in incidents of single and small groups of baboons running past the baboon rangers to town to feed on figs in particular. Vegetable gardens are also very attractive to baboons and it is advisable to cover vegetable gardens. Your co-operation in assisting to keep the baboon troop out of town is much valued. SR-opleiding by Hoërskool Swellendam Leerders van Hoërskool Swellendam het Saterdag 20 Februarie SR-opleiding ontvang. Die kursus is aangebied deur Mnr Johann van Deventer. Die kursus is geopen deur mnr. Pelser (met mooi Swellie-sokkies) en die onderwerp was ‘Happiness’. Nog foto’s (ook die foto van die sokkies) op bladsy 10.

The support we received during the search for Lava was overwhelming. He was missing for five days, and so many amazing stories came out during this time. It is important for me to share this story, this journey with you all. It all began on Tuesday, 16th February. I could hear something was stuck in Lava’s throat and took off his collar. I asked my Dad to please take him to the vet as I was unable to do so. A short while later, my Mom called to inform me that Lava had escaped from my Dad’s arms at the vet. Unfortunately, nobody saw what direction he went in. My dad desperately looked for him, hoping he had not gone far. But he was gone. I rushed to Bredasdorp with the kids and our new puppy Roxy. We searched and called his name but no luck. I posted on all Facebook pages I could find and came across an animal communicator named Fanus Prinsloo, based in Durbanville. He connected with Lava and informed me that he was stuck in a concrete pipe close to a church.

I returned to Bredasdorp and picked up my friend Lilly. While we searched in the pipes, we met 3 street kids who insisted they wanted to help us. Matriekuitslae Met die bekendmaking van die 2020 matriekuitslae op Dinsdag 23 Februarie, is dit weereens die skole in die Overbergstreek wat uitstekende prestasies gelewer het… en dit tydens ‘n wêreldwye pandemie.

By Hoërskool Bredasdorp was dit die A-kandidate vlnr: Nicole Conradie, Jemimah Daniels, Suzette Arends, Gemma Crafford, Liebe Neethling, Skylah Hastie, Karel Bezuidenhout, Fiona Fourie. Afwesig met die neem van die foto: Rentia Tromp. In total was daar 9 A’s, 16 B’s en 27 C’s. Die slaagsyfer was 98.7 % en 82% van die matrieks het geslaag met matrikulasievrystelling. Ten spyte van 'n jaar met menige uitdagings het hierdie groep matrieks van Hoërskool Hermanus nog steeds uitstekende prestasies gelewer. Die top 10 akademiese presteerders op die foto is agter vlnr dan Michaela Lawrence, Anna van Deventer, Gerphan Louw, Mia Burgess, Kaylan Miller, Amé Yue. Update on the coronavirus Premier Alan Winde The Western Cape has recorded 21 additional deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 11 055. We send our condolences to their loved ones at this time. Additional data is available on the Western Cape COVID-19 data dashboard which also features active cases per subdistrict, active cases per 100 000 and 7-day moving averages. Access the data dashboard here: https://coronavirus.westerncape.gov.za/covid-19-dashboard Last weekend, over 1700 vaccines were administered to health care workers in the province, with 861 administered on Saturday and a further 932 administered yesterday. A total of 2756 vaccines had been administered to healthcare workers in the province by 5 pm yesterday. This is the biggest vaccination drive in the province and the country, with a number of technical and logistical moving parts. We have been working hard to ensure that the rollout has been smooth and to make adjustments as required. I am heartened by the growing number of vaccinations being administered daily. Health care workers who are interested in receiving the vaccine, and who have not yet done so, must register on the electronic system. Once registered, you will be allocated a vaccination and site to go for the vaccination. I am regularly asked by members of the media and members of the public whether I will be getting vaccinated. I fully intend to get vaccinated, but I will not be doing so at the expense of our health care workers who have been on the frontline fighting COVID-19 for nearly a year now. They must be our priority. The entire Western Cape Cabinet has made the same commitment to wait until it is our turn, in phases two and three of the vaccination rollout. The rollout of this J&J vaccine implementation study is very exciting news but it does not mean we can let our guards down. We must continue to be vigilant and ensure that we are still wearing our masks correctly, washing our hands regularly and practising social distancing. ‘n Besoek: Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA Lunette Coetzee Die SMA (Special Management Area) met die SANParkeen Nuwejaarsspan het 'n uitnodiging aan Elimers gerig, om die Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA en Waschkraalvallei te besoek. Daar is 45 duisend hektaar grond onder die besit van 25 lede of eienaars, waarvan Elim een is. Hierdie SMA-idee het 20 jaar gelede ontstaan, maar is vervolmaak tien jaar gelde. Dit is privaatgrond met ‘n wonderlike toerismetrefkrag. Oor die jare is die Elim Opsienersraadslede vir besigtiging genooi, asook skoolgroepe. Op 24 Februarie 2021 is 'n groep van sowat 25 Elimers op 'n toer deur die gebied geneem. Dit het Opsienersraadslede, die predikant, ‘n museumbeampte, gemeenskapsleiers en jeugdiges ingesluit. Dit was 'n wonderlike ekskursie. Eers is die groepie na die Nuwejaars Wetlands geneem en toe na Waschkraalsvlei, die ‘Buffalo’ en ‘Hippo’ kamp. Hier sal mens troppe volstruise, swartwildebeeste, buffels, elande, bontebokke en sowat 300 voëlspesies vind. Die Agulhastuin is een van die rykste voëlareas in die land. Die SMA is alreeds besig met die nuwe toepassings van die Verenigde Nasies se nuwe konsep dat bewaring en boerdery moet saamwerk. Terwyl sekere kampe vir Natuurbewaring gebruik word, is daar landbougrond op die ander plase. Die diere beweeg oor en weer oor die plase. COVID-19 het toerisme erg benadeel, maar die goeie nuus is dat daar op plaaslike gaste ook gefokus word. Toere word 2 maal per dag gedoen... soggens en later deur die middag. Dit was 'n insiggewende toer en uitstappie.

My journey, my cross Continued from page 14 could crawl through the pipes and search. It was devastating to run around and searching for 2 days, without any success. Then Fanus received a message from Lava. He described that he was out of the pipe and on a farm at the house of some farm workers. I was so relieved to get this message. Lilly, Stefane and I continued to search all the roads, looking for a place that fitted the description Fanus had given us. Then a call came in - somebody had spotted Lava in Bredasdorp. That threw us off from searching on the farms and it left me confused but determined to continue. I knew that Lava was alive, and I needed to find him. The next morning at 6am, I was back in Bredasdorp. Ready to resume the search all over the community. I met up with two Grade 5 angels from Mills Park they assisted me, walking through that whole area through the squatter camps. I have so much respect for these kids and how streetwise they are. I felt safe with them as they knew everyone. Then Another angel came my way, a woman named Wilna phoned to say she would sponsor 600 flyers. She was also searching. Stef and I collected the flyers, and handed them out at Spar. It was then that my brother Cornel phoned. He was sitting on a mountain top with binoculars and he had just spotted Lava on a farm road near Agulhas Honeybush Tea farm. The setting is exactly like the pictures Lava had shown Fanus. It is just 10km from the farm where I grew up as a child. I don’t know for sure, but Lava must have run via Napier over the mountain like our farm dogs use to do. He must have reached the Toekomst area. The picture of the church that Fanus had seen was real after all - it was the church in Napier. I would love to know who the farm workers were, that Lava had stayed with. I am sure that will be another interesting story! Only a few days prior to this incident we had started a prayer group to save my friend’s business and the jobs of the wonderful people she employ, whose jobs feed 110 mouths. We also planned to pray for people. I believe to this day, that the enemy tried to cloud my mission to pray for others. The enemy did not win. God and all his angels did! I truly believe that Fanus’s ability to communicate with animals is a gift from God. I know that some people do not want to believe this, but I would urge you to. My angels of street kids who showed me unconditional love and support, were amazing. And oh boy the shocking conditions these people live in! Please, Bredasdorp reach out to the kids in Mills Park and the camps. They need our love and attention. All they want is proper school clothes and books. I believe in the power of prayer and the power of prayer by a whole community is real. I thank God and everybody who prayed and searched for Lava during this time. Please purchase your cross at Struisbaai Seashack. We will pray for your cross. This Sunday, 28th of February at 9 am there will be a service right on the beach. I hope to see you all. The R50 that you pay for your cross will go to the Struisbaai Omgee Group who feed hungry families in the community and we will also take funds and buy school clothes to the angels of The Mills community who helped search for Lava. Assistance for entrepreneurs Grootbos Foundation, in partnership with Overstrand Municipality's Local Economic Development (LED), offers an opportunity to individuals who want to start their own small business or expanding an original business. The entrepreneurship programme will start on 2 March 2021. The workshops will be held in Hawston, Gansbaai, Mt Pleasant, Stanford, Zwelhile and Elim. Only 30 participants per area will be selected to take part. Participation is free of charge. The best ideas will receive support including start-up money and business coaching. Participants will have a chance to present their business ideas one month after the workshop.
