Goeiedag en welkom by nog ‘n uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Dit is lekker om elke week vir julle hiérdie blad saam te stel en week na week vir julle positief ingelig te hou. ‘n Groot dankie ook aan ons medewerkers wat so getrou werk om elke week vir julle die positiewe kant van die nuus uit die Overbergstreek te bring. Hulle bydrae is van onskatbare waarde en word opreg waardeer.

Hierdie 54ste uitgawe van OVERdeBERG is weer propvol positiewe nuus van oral oor die pragtige streek waarin ons bly. Ons berig eksklusief oor die pragtige prestasie van een van ons eie… Tineke van Zyl, oud-skolier van Laerskool Bredasdorp en Hoërskool Overberg, wat gedurende die afgelope week haar Proteakleure vir Ruiterkuns ontvang het. Daar is heelwat pragtige foto’s vir julle om na te kyk. Daar word weer heerlik saamgekuier in die kombuis met twee watertandlekker resepte en dan gaan maak ons ‘n draai by twee hoërskole (Hoërskool Hermanus en Hoërskool Bredasdorp), om te gaan loer hoe die nuwe graad 8’s verwelkom is. Dit is egter nie net die graad 8’s nie. By Laerskool Kleinmond is die graad 1’s ook op ‘n kleurvolle en pragtige wyse verwelkom.

Groen & Goud vir Overberger Jacques Louw Tineke van Zyl, woonagtig in Bredasdorp en oud leerling van Laerskool Bredasdorp en Hoërskool Overberg, het haar Proteaklere vir Ruiterkuns ontvang by ’n funksie wat op Vrydag 12 Februarie 2021 plaasgevind het. Tineke het alreeds in Januarie 2020 aan die Nasionale proewe op Riversdal deelgeneem, waartydens sy ‘n lid van die Westelike Provinsie-span was. By hiérdie kompetisie het die WP met die 3-, sowel as die 5-gangbeker weggestap.
Tineke is ook hier opgeneem in die Proteaspan wat in Oktober 2020 aan die internasionale kompetisie sou deelneem, maar a.g.v. COVID-regulasies, het dit egter nie plaasgevind nie. Dit sou toe hierdie jaar vanaf 15 tot 17 Februarie plaasgevind het, maar is ook afgestel a.g.v. COVID-19. Die spanlede het egter steeds hul klere ontvang en Tineke s’nis dus tydens hiérdie privaatgeleentheid oorhandig. Die Overberg kan voorwaar trots wees op Tineke. Foto’s: Jacques Louw

Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw
Snoektertjies Bestandele: Vir die kors kan enige klaar korsdeeg gekoop word. 500 ml meel 5 ml sout 5 ml rooipeper 5 ml bakpoeier 250 ml botter Snoekvulsel: 500 ml gerookte snoek fyn gevlek 1 ui fyngekap olie om ui in te braai 500 ml cheddarkaas 125 ml fyngekapte pietersielie 250 ml room 2 eiers Metode: Vir die kors: Sif droë bestanddele saam. Werk die botter met jou vingers in. Meng verder in voedselverwerker. Voer pannetjies uit en plaas in yskas tot nodig. Bak blind voor gebruik. Die snoekvulsel: Braai die ui in die pan tot glaserig. Plaas die gebraaide ui in die tertdoppies. Plaas die kaas op die uie. Meng die pietersielie en snoek en plaas bo op die kaas. Klop die room en eiers en gooi oor die vis. Sprinkel nog kaas bo op en gooi ‘n klein bietjie rooipeper oor. Bak vir 30 minute teen 180 grade Celsius. Bedien dan met ‘n salsa en suurlemoen.
Aspersievis Bestandele: 1 x 430 g blikkie aspersies 750 g dik stokvisfilette sout en peper 250 ml gerasperde kaas 45 ml botter 45 ml koekmeel 2.5 ml mosterpoeier 100 ml melk Metode: Dreineer die aspersies maar behou die vloeistof. Geur vis na smaak met sout en peper en pak dit in ‘n oondbak. Pak die aspersies bo-op die vis, maak toe en sit eenkant. Smelt die botter in ‘n klein kastrolletjie en roer die meel by. Roer tot daar geen klonte is nie en laat die mengsel effens kook om die meel gaar te kry. Giet nou stadig die aspersievloeistof by terwyl jy aanhoudend roer. Gooi ook genoeg melk by om ‘n dik witsous te maak. Skep sous oor vis en sprinkel met kaas. Bak teen 180°C vir 30 minute of tot gaar. Lewer 4 porsies saam met kapokaartappels en geroosterde groente. Mask pollution now a problem Make history. Adopt a Hippo on the Agulhas Plain In 1850, the last hippo alive on the Agulhas Plain was shot. And so hippos became extinct in our area. Until now, that is. Hippos have now been reintroduced to the Agulhas Plain and broader Overberg region. Today we have 7 hippos living in the Nuwejaars wetlands. They’re a family unit, with a bull, 4 cows and 2 young ones. So we’ve made a bit of history. Now you can too… by adopting a hippo! Get feedback on your hippo’s movements, and receive cameratrap pictures we capture. Our hippos are one of very few pods in the Western Cape. They’re curious, and regularly head to the shore to get to know their human neighbours. And they’re protected by our wetlands and vlei’s. Although it is essential to protect our own health during this pandemic, it does not need to cost the planets’ health. Wearing reusable masks may help keep our estuary and river less polluted. More than 129 billion face masks are being used globally every month. A Hong Kong-based group have witnessed large amounts of face masks washing up on a small coastal island since the start of this pandemic. It is estimated that 1.56 billion face masks polluted the oceans in 2020. Disposable face masks take more than 450 years to break down (only into smaller pieces). The surgical masks are made of multiple polypropylene layers (which are thin fibres of plastic). 52 billion surgical masks were manufactured in 2020, each weighing between 4 and 5 grams. This means 4 680 to 6 240 metric tons of new marine plastic pollution. Please try to dispose of single-use masks responsibly.

Brand new fire vehicles for Overstrand On Friday, 12 February 2021, Overstrand’s Fire and Disaster Management received keys for three new fire vehicles at a ceremony held at the new Fire Station in Mussel Street, Hermanus. Among the dignitaries attending, were the Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, Ald Dudley Coetzee, Overstrand Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill, Councillors, Provincial Disaster Services officials as well as Overberg and Overstrand fire fighters.

The event was opened with a word of welcome by the Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill. He expressed appreciation and highlighted that “the vehicles received today, will increase the services rendered in the communities and will be helpful, to speed up service delivery in our communities”. At the start of the event, officials who lost their lives in line of duty were remembered.

He then gave feedback on the three fire fighters who got injured on duty, “two of them have been discharged and one is still in hospital and is progressing well”. Thereafter Mayor Coetzee, expressed his appreciation for the dedicated work done by our fire fighters under difficult and dangerous conditions. He stated that firefighting is the mandate of the Overberg District Municipality. “We are always appreciative and grateful to the Provincial Government for the funding of firefighting vehicles and specialised equipment provided to the Overstrand Municipality, particularly as firefighting is an unfunded mandate in Local Government. Consequently, Overstrand Municipality is not always in a financial position to allocate funding for firefighting vehicles and equipment. "The three vehicles taken into service today will assist in providing an improved firefighting capability”.

Valentynstee by Huis Lekkerbly
Elke Donderdagoggend is dit ‘n aktiwiteitsoggend vir die inwoners van Huis Lekkerbly in Bredasdorp. So is die inwoners verras op Donderdag 11 Februarie met ‘n Valentynstee in die tuin van Huis Lekkerbly. Die gedeelte onder een van die pragtige groot bome in die tuin, was getooi in rooi. Gedigte is gelees,musiek is gespeel en gedagtes is geruil oor die betekenis van die dag… hoe dit was in die verlede teenoor vandag. Voorwaar ‘n heerlike en baie suksesvolle geleentheid.

Assistance for entrepreneurs Grootbos Foundation, in partnership with Overstrand Municipality's Local Economic Development (LED), offers an opportunity to individuals who want to start their own small business or expanding an original business. The entrepreneurship programme will start on 2 March 2021. The workshops will be held in Hawston, Gansbaai, Mt Pleasant, Stanford, Zwelhile and Elim. Only 30 participants per area will be selected to take part. Participation is free of charge. The best ideas will receive support including start-up money and business coaching. Participants will have a chance to present their business ideas one month after the workshop. History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Was Mrs. Ball's Chutney recipe shipwrecked? In the edition of the Sarie Magazine of March 2004, writer André Le Roux reported about the life story of Mrs. Ball and her chutney recipe. Early in the article, Le Roux writes that Mrs. Ball (Amelia Alice Elizabeth Adkins) was born in 1865 at Fort Jackson, East London. He goes on to report that her parent's residency in South Africa was due to them being shipwrecked at East London in 1852, whilst emigrating from Canada to Australia. In reality, Le Roux (and others) missed a significant fact, namely that the ship they are reported to have been on, SS Quanza only went down off this South African port on Sunday 26 May 1872 and not in 1852.
8 000 bottles a day. Today, Mrs. Ball's chutney is still being made in Johannesburg and exported to Germany, Britain, New Zealand and Australia. Although a phenomenal success story, this author established that the SS Quanza was never part of the real story — yes, she sank off East London, but not in 1852, and neither Hendry nor Sarah were on her on that fateful day in 1872. Hopefully, this is not another case of, as a local Overberger once put it, 'too much truth spoils a good story'. The SS Quanza was a screw steamer of 942 tons and the first of a new line of steamers between London and Cape Town. She left Falmouth, Cornwall, England on Friday 8 March and on reaching East London on the 24 May, anchored close to shore. The next day a strong southeast storm started building up. In the UK newspapers of the time referred to the storm as a hurricane. The court of inquiry placed the blame on the first mate (left in charge). The court believed that a mistake was made by not only anchoring in shallow water and close to shore, but then also not, as a precaution, lifting the anchors and steaming out to deeper water in preparation to outride the storm. The strong southeast wind and swell took its toll to the point that the SS Quanza was lost by the early morning of Sunday. Two 'heads' were to roll, that of Master Morley and First Mate Tothill.

So fiction would have it that Mrs. Ball's father, 'Captain of SS Quanza' Henry Jam es Adk ins, his w ife, Sarah Spalding and her secret chutney recipe (passed on to her from her mother) were shipwrecked and settled at Fort Jackson, East London. In reality, Henry was no shipwrecked captain — only a local from the Eastern Cape. Sarah too was never shipwrecked. She had earlier emigrated from Canada and disembarked from some other ship at East London. The two met, married and settled in Fort Jackson, East London where they ran a general dealership. It was here that Sarah started making chutney according to the recipe handed down to her from her mother. The making and selling of chutney continued through her two daughters, Amelia and her younger sister, Florence. The latter sold hers as 'Mrs. Adkins' Chutney' while Amelia married Herbert Ball and marketed hers as 'Mrs. Ball's Chutney'. The Ball's moved to Johannesburg where, as a team, she made the chutney and her husband bottled and sold it. By 1918 they were selling 24 bottles a day, which in the years to come grew to 16
