Goeiedag en baie welkom by nog ‘n lekker uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Hiérdie is ons 52ste uitgawe en ekself is sommer baie trots op hoe hiérdie publikasie gegroei het in ‘n jaar. Alles is net moontlik met genade van bo, my fantastiese en hardwerkende medewerkers en julle die lesers en ondersteuners van OVERdeBERG. Baie dankie aan elkeen.

In hiérdie week se uitgawe is daar ‘n besoek aan die verskillende vleielande van die Overberg en heelwat interessante inligting is daar om gelees te word. Ons kuier weer lekker in die kombuis met nog twee resepte vir julle om ook by die huis te gaan probeer! Ons gaan loer weer in by van ons skole in die Overberg om te sien waarmee hulle besig bly en dan bring Letty-Ann Möller weer vir ons ‘n bydrae oor die interessante virtuele vergadering van die Bredasdorp VLV-tak. Toortsie sluit weer by ons aan met haar skryfwerk en gesels ook weer die week oor haar persoonlike ervaring met COVID-19 en wat die Bybel vir haar daaroor gesê het. Baie mooi en ook inspirerende skryfwerk. Jakkals & Wolf vermaak ons weer op bladsy 13 en Jimmy Herbert skryf nog ‘n baie interessante hoofstuk oor die maritieme geskiedenis van die Overberg. The wetlands of our Overberg The drought in Southern Africa in the last ten years should be an eye-opener for all people living in this part of the world. The theme for the 2021 World Wetlands Day on 2 February, was ‘Wetlands and Water’. The theme puts a spotlight on wetlands as a source of fresh water and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss. A growing fresh water crisis is threatening people and the planet. Wetlands are being destroyed by the very users who depend on water to survive as they use more water than nature can replenish. The 2021 campaign highlighted the contribution of wetlands to the quantity and quality of fresh water on the planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an inseparable coexistence that is vital to life, the well-being of people and the health of planet Earth.

Wetlands are land areas that are saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Inland wetlands include marshes, ponds, lakes, fens, rivers, floodplains and swamps. Coastal wetlands include saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons and even coral reefs. Fishponds, rice paddies, and saltpans are human-made wetlands.
Photo: Anton Kruger The following water bodies are found on the Agulhas Plain: The Nuwejaars Wetland ecosystem: The Nuwejaars Wetland ecosystem consists of rare and endemic natural fynbos and wetlands, which are all interlinked by the streams and rivers of the Nuwejaars Wetland ecosystem. This system drains the Southern Agulhas Plain and the very low gradients in the south-eastern plain, result in significant wetland development. A number of annual and permanent water bodies or vleis is created. The Agulhas region is unique in terms of the wide variety of wetlands (freshwater springs, rivers, estuaries, lakes, vleis and endorheic pans) that occur within a relatively small area. The river waters are generally alkaline and brackish as a result of passage through limestone-bearing Strandveld sands. The Nuwejaars River: The headwaters of the Nuwejaars River are on the south-facing slopes of the Bredasdorp Mountains, the Koue Mountains to the west, the hills to the south of Elim, and the north-facing slopes of the Soetanys Mountain. The five tributaries of the Nuwejaars River are the Koue, Wolwegatskloof, Jan Swartskraal, Boskloof and Uintjieskuil. The Nuwejaars River measures 55km from its westernmost source, through Soetendalsvlei to the confluence overdeberg2020@gmail.com
of the vlei’s overflow channel with the Kars River. From this confluence it flows as the Heuningnes River for 15 km to its estuary at De Mond, a Ramsar site. Soetendalsvlei: The very low gradients in the south-eastern Agulhas Plain resulted in significant wetland development, and created the second largest lacustrine wetland and permanent water body in South Africa, the Soetendalsvlei. It is the southernmost lake in Africa and the biggest fresh water lake which drains into the sea in South Africa. Soetendalsvlei is 8 km long from north to south and 3 km at its widest. The drainage to the sea is the Heuningnes River and the inlet the Nuwejaars River. Voëlvlei: Voëlvlei is an important lake on the Nuwejaars River. It has a small catchment of its own from the Geelrug hills and receives most of its water when the Nuwejaars River is in flood and the floodwaters push into Voëlvlei. An uninterrupted link to the Nuwejaars system is important for the functioning of the vlei. Voëlvlei is moderately saline. Waskraalvlei: Waskraalvlei is also an important wetland on the Nuwejaars River. It has a small catchment area from the surrounding hills and receives water from the Nuwejaars River in good flood years when the floodwaters push up into the vlei. 600 g haddock 400 melk 6 peperkorrels 2 lourierblare 1 ui (in ringe gesny) 650 g aartappels (in dik ringe gesny) 500 g babaspinasie 1 pakkie kitskaassouspoeier 1 pakkie kitskaassous 125 ml gerasperde emmertal kaas 125 ml gerasperde cheddar kaas Knippie neut
Soet skaapstertjies Bestandele:
Metode: Kook die haddock met die uie, lourierblare, peperkorrels en melk in ‘n pot op die stoof vir 10 minute. Dreineer die melk in ‘n beker en vlok die vis. Raak ontslae van die vel en enige grate maar hou die melk. Kook die aartappelskywe in warm water tot net sag. Kook die spinasie vinnig. Dreineer goed en sit in ‘n enkellaag in ‘n groot, gesmeerde oondbak. Verhit die melk en klits die kitskaaspoeier in. As dit dik raak, voeg die gekoopte kaassous, die gerasperde kase en die knippie neut by. Roer tot die kase gesmelt is en verwyder van die hitte. Pak nou die vis en dan die aartappels bo op die spinasie in die bak. Gooi jou kaassous oor die aartappels. Bak vir 20 minute by 200°C.
30 skaapstertjies 3 heel naeltjies sout, peper en koljander na smaak 250 ml tamatiesous 100 ml chutney 100 ml Worcestersous 250 ml witwyn 1 ui (in ringetjies gesny) 60 ml suiker sout en peper Metode: Sny die ui en pak onder in ‘n oondvaste bak. Plaas die stertjies bo-op en sout en peper. Meng die res van die bestanddele en gooi oor die stertjies. Bak teen 180 grade Celsius toe vir 30 minute. Maak dan oop en braai vir 60 minute of tot gaar. Draai gedurig om.

Saltpans: The Springfield Saltpan forms part of a collection of pans in the Agulhas Plain; the others are the Rhenosterkop pan, the Soutbosch pan and a few smaller pans. Most Cape inland salt pans were coastal lagoons that became dry after been cut off from the sea. The term ‘pan’, used in South Africa, refers to endorheic basins or depressions. It includes salt pans, pans filled due to river flooding, and claybottomed pans filled by rainfall. Pans may be both temporary and permanent.
Photo: Black Oystercatcher Pans and vleis on the western plains: On the plains between Rietfontein and Ratelrivier are a series of natural pans and vleis, Vispan, Wasvlei, Drievleitjies and Melkbospan. The water that feed these pans come from Geelrug during the rainy season. The vleis and pans are also filled from the sea at high tide a spot called Waaiplek during the winter months. These smaller pans are strongly saline. Ratel River: The Ratel River rises to the west of Elim, the Gonnakraal and Wolvengat area, and flows into the sea via an extensive wetland 20 km east of Quoin Point, which is described as a storage floodplain. The catchment area is about 405 km2 and the mean annual simulated runoff is 7.05 x 106 m3. Natural springs and bore-holes: During a groundwater census conducted in the Agulhas National Park in November 2020 by scientists from the Cape Research Centre 33 groundwater sites were documented. Sites documented as part of the Park’s cultural landscape must still be added. Die vise-voorsitter, Lorraine du Toit, deel die humor en hartseer van oud word en die nadele van inentings n.a.v. 'n gevallestudie onder bejaardes in Noorweë. Letty-Ann Möller, wys daarop dat mans wêreldwyd meer geïnfekteer word, maar vroue word die meeste daaroor geaffekteer. Sy deel ook 'n video van klere ontwerpers in Maleisië se unieke bydrae tot beskermingsklere teen die pandemie. Vervolg op bladsy 10
Letty-Ann Möller Met stories kies ons om nie die virus van angs te voed nie, maar met liefde. Dit is nie ons verskille nie, maar dis ons ooreenkomste wat ons bind. So ons vra julle dan in hierdie grendel- en kwarentyntyd: "Let's lift our hopes up for each other, together".
Dit is hoe die potpourri-vergadering van die VLV-tak op Bredasdorp van 15:00 tot 15:45 op Dinsdag die 2de Februarie 2021 verloop het. In haar inleiding en openingstekste het Annette van Eeden, voorsitter, verwys na 'hoop', na die impak van die coronavirus wêreldwyd en na die wêreldreis wat ook die sekretaresse, tesourier en die res van die bestuur saam met elke VLV-lid met dié beeld en klank WhatsApp-aanbieding gaan meemaak. Alle portefeuljes is gedek. Die sekretaresse, Annemi Fourie, vertel baie interessant van Egipte se hirogliewe en Arabië se nommerplate. Wat leer die Bybel my van covid? Ek verkyk my altyd aan God se humor, maar ook Sy tydsberekening. Dat dit juis nou, wat ek so geworstel het met die virus, Levitikus moet lees. Jy weet, Levitikus is nou nie eintlik ‘n plek waar ek gewoonlik rondhang nie. Maar ek lees mos my Bybel van voor af, elke liewe woord, en dit is waar ek nou trek. By al die onrein dinge. As jy ‘n veluitslag het en wat nog alles wat jou onrein maak. O, en net vir as jy wonder, ek dink ek is gesond. Ek is beslis nie meer ‘n gesondheidsgevaar vir ander nie en sal my nog steeds isoleer totdat ek nie meer hoes nie. Maar ek dink ek het hom gewen. So wat lees ek raak? 1.) Sonder jou af. Bly weg van ander mense af as jy siek is. 2.) Die gemeente versorg sy melaatses. Hulle sit kos uit op die rand van die dorp sodat die melaatses iets kan hê om te eet. Vandag? Hy moet sy klere was, sy hare afskeer en bad. (Lev 14:8) Jy moet jouself reinig. Skoonmaak en mooi maak sodat jy beter voel en die wêreld in die oë kan kyk. 6.) Jy moet ook jou huis skoonmaak. (Lev 14 vanaf vers 33). Natuurlik, vir higiëniese redes, maar vir baie meer as dit. Jy moet daardie mufkolle uithaal. Uitbreek. Uitwas. Maar nie net jou huis waarin jy bly nie, sommer ‘huis skoonmaak’ op ‘n baie dieper vlak. Al daai klein jakkalsies ook sommer verwyder wat jou wingerd verwoes. Dinge uitsorteer wat al lankal uitgesorteer moes word. Terwyl jy die bul by die horings beet het en die virus beveg, stel sommer ‘n paar ander sakies ook reg, dis nie aldag dat jy die woema daarvoor het nie. 7.) Lev 11:44: “Ek is die Here julle God. Unique individual of the Overberg: Jock Dichmond Continued from page 16 People flocked from far and wide to spend time with Jock. He enjoyed their company and the telling of his tales of the sea. One of his most sought after stories was about the “Bokvis”. On the walls of his old pub were the jaws of two large ‘stompkop’ fish. Each one had ‘steenbok’ horns making it no more or less a buck and a fish - ‘Bokvis.’ Most appeared to believe Jock’s story of how this rare type of fish, only to be found at Arniston, would come out of the sea during a full moon to feed on the lush green grass in front of the hotel.
Minutes later and on the back of a wave, the snow white and well-tanned Jock and his crew approached this same slipway, reached it with wheels already attached to Gosie, pulled her up the slipway, hitched her to an old well corroded red bakkie and drove off. Something to remember.
As free divers, when we turned our enthusiasm and energy from the ocean and its content of fish to shipwrecks, visits to Jock became not only more pleasant, but also an educational experience. With his vast experience of Overberg shipwrecks, he would have us spellbound for hours on end. Furthermore, while on the committee of the South African Historical Shipwreck Society, we often used to get Jock to give lectures on his adventures. Jock always brought along a bowl filled to the brink with silver coins from an array of shipwrecks. Something most will never forget. In 1983 a group of divers called ‘Sealit’, discovered the English East Indiaman Joanna that sank near Quoin Point in 1682. The Joanna had cob coins as part of its silver cargo. My friend André Hartman still had many of these coins that he recovered during the excavation period. In the late 80s, Jock often phoned us in search of these silver cob coins. He used to purchase 20 or more at a time. Then over the following weeks, he would have patrons spellbound with his stories of treasure hunting. Invariably such a story would end with the sale of one or more of his silver stock. A win-win for all.
All in all, the hanging display was a true tribute to this wonderful Overberg diver and exceptional character that so many of us fondly and affectionately remember. His example of living life, his personality, his imagination, his stories and yes, even his bowlegged gait, will fondly remain cherished by all of us that were fortunate enough to have known Jock! In this tribute, Jock and his boat, Gosie, were compared to four ‘slick young men’ with their expensive 4x4 and swanky rubber duck. History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Unique individual of the Overberg: Jock Dichmond In the 70’s, as a young and upcoming provincial spear fishermen, we all idolised Jock. He represented the attitude to life that most yearned for, but never had the guts to pursue. To give up the drive for money and 'success' in exchange for a happy and fulfilling life, was just not what was expected of us, nor was it in our framework of upbringing or reference. The mind-set and wisdom that success can be measured by a level of health, happiness and being content rather than a large bank balance, often only comes with age. In Jock’s case, he always had it.
It was during his years as a commercial diamond diver that one of his many life threatening experiences acquired “story status”. In those days most of the diamond diving on the West Coast was done with the use of a surface compressor system supplying air to the diver via a hose. This gave a diver immense freedom, as one did not have a heavy aqualung on your back. Furthermore, the diver was also not limited to the amount of air in one aqualung, but could carry on working underwater for as long as you could handle the cold west coast water.
Jock tells about how, while working in between the boulders and sand on the ocean bottom in search of diamonds, his air supply started to decrease. He found himself forced to frantically suck harder, and harder on his mouthpiece for air. Jock turned his head upwards looking towards the surface to see if there was any sign as to what was going on. Just imagine his surprise when he saw his compressor sinking down to the bottom and, short on its heels, the boat itself. On frantically surfacing he was again surprised to see the ship’s crew, without him, rowing the little lifeboat towards the shore and safety. To say that Jock was an old seadog can be seen as an understatement. He knew the sea with all its many means of communication. Add the latter to the fact that Jock was a fast learner, it is only natural that he would have an admirable fish and weather sense. He could read the weather and knew instinctively when the sea was about to change. In later years, and as an older man, Jock and his well-used little boat, Gosie, acquired legendary status. Not to mention not having the compulsory set of safety equipment, Gosie correspondingly had no radio and no echo sounder (used to find the reefs and fish). Jock’s exceptional ability to ‘read’ the swells and other aspects of the ocean enabled him to find, with any apparatus, reefs that were well populated with fish. Legend has it that Jock not only knew all the local sea birds, but they appeared to know him as well. It is said that he even communicated with them, while throwing them morsels of fish bait. Over the years the Arniston hotel has had many owners. During the last three decades the hotel has been enlarged and improved significantly. The first big alterations came when Ian Mackintosh was the owner. After him the next owner, Guy Johnston, also expanded the hotel. His alterations were done mainly on the rooms and area surrounding the swimming pool. The present day owner, Robert Haarburger, took the hotel to new heights by adding a third story. However, what very few people know is that Jock Dichmond also was an owner of this hotel. Already in 1954, Jock had purchased a picturesque National Monument Council cottage from a guano digger. In the 70’s, he went on to purchase the biggest building in the village, the Arniston Hotel. As an extremely social person and true humoristic entertainer, it is only logical that Jock would take a fancy to running the pub, rather than the accommodation side of the hotel industry.
It was at this time that he was involved as a crew member for the popular film, “Blue waters, White death” (I think). An ocean related occupation suited Jock more.
According to Marius Diemond, in his book (2015, THE ARNISTON 1815-2015, A village remembers), one of the many intriguing stories about Jock was when a potential client tried to book holiday accommodation. The hotel was almost empty at the time. While Jock was running the pub, the call came through. Those in the bar had to hold back their laughter lest they give Jock’s deceit away when they heard him say, ‘No, absolutely impossible', and then seconds later, ‘I'm afraid we are absolutely full. Yes, next week, as well.’
He was at his best when he did not have to conform to normal society, but rather could dream and enthusiastically follow his dreams. As a good spear fisherman it was only natural that he would follow others of his top diving peers, in search of diamonds.
In that same decade Jock sold the hotel but stayed on as the bar tender. His personality, stories and storytelling ability was by far a greater attraction than the alcohol beverage to be enjoyed in such pubs. Continued on page 15
Already from a young age, it was clear that Jock was gifted and smart. After school he studied and became a lawyer. In the late 60s, Jock plucked up the courage to leave the security of his learned occupation and the law firm to follow his true passion, the ocean.
