Goeiedag en welkom by die 51ste uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Die jaar 2021 is ‘n nuwe jaar wat goed afgeskop het vir ons en dis beide ons webtuiste en ons Facebookblad wat aansienlike groei en ondersteuning geniet. Daarvoor moet ek vir al ons lesers en ondersteuners baie dankie sê, maar ook ons medewerkers, sonder wie die blad nie kan aangaan nie.

Skipper rescued near Skipskop At 23h55, Wednesday the 20th of January, NSRI Agulhas and NSRI Witsand duty crews were activated following reports of a Yacht run aground near to Skipskop, between Arniston and the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The skipper, a 20 year old male, from Bloemfontein, who had been solo sailing from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, was reportedly still onboard the vessel which was reported to be taking on water. The location of the man was determined to be offshore of the Overberg Test Range area.

With the assistance from the rescue crew on the shore the skipper was able to navigate the fish trap structures and he made his way safely to shore where he was met by the shore rescue crew.
Photo: Jean Tresfon NSRI Agulhas duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Agulhas and NSRI Witsand duty crew launched the sea rescue Breede Rescuer and an NSRI shore side search party and Overberg Fire and Rescue Services were sent landwards to the vicinity to search along the shoreline. NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) and MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) investigated the availability of a helicopter to prepare for a night operation in the event that the casualty vessel was not reachable from the sea or from the land side. Using a location pin that was provided by the casualty skipper the rescue crew on the shore found the skipper about 500 meters off the coastline near to Ryspunt. The area was illuminated and it was found that the yacht had run aground in an area of ancient fish traps, known as Visfywers (these are old structures were built in a bygone era). overdeberg2020@gmail.com
The man was assessed for injuries and for hypothermia and not injured we accommodated him at our NSRI Agulhas sea rescue station in Struisbaai and he is doing well. The 2 sea rescue craft were stood down and on Thursday the skipper was investigating what has become of his yacht which is suspected to be run aground. Metode: Maak die Nutticrust fyn en meng dit met die gesmelte botter. Druk dit in ‘n gesmeerde tertbak vas om die kors te vorm. Klits die kondensmelk en suurlemoensap tot dik. Roer die kersies by, en daarna die malvalekkers wat in stukkies gesny is. Klits die room en vanieljegeursel tot styf. Voeg dit by die eerste mengsel en daarna die pynappel. Gooi die mengsel bo-oor die kors in die tertbak. Plaas in die yskas. Versier met stukkies malvalekkers. Maklike sjokolademousse-kaaskoek Bestandele: 250 g roomkaas 250 g mascarpone 160 ml strooisuiker 60 ml kakao 250 ml room 5 ml vanielje 1 Lindt sjokolade 30 ml melk 1 pakkie oreokoekies 60 ml botter gesmelt Metode: Kap die oreokoekies fyn in ‘n voedselverwerker. Smelt die botter in die mikrogolf en meng met die koekies. Smeer ‘n losboompan en druk die koekiemengsel vas in die pan. Sit in die yskas dat dit kan set. Klits die room in ‘n bak met 100 ml strooisuiker en die vanielje tot dit sagte punte maak. In ‘n ander bak klits die roomkaas, mascarpone, gesifte kakao en orige 60 ml strooisuiker dat dit sag en goed gemeng is. Smelt die Lindt sjokolade met 30 ml melk in die mikrogolf. Roer dit by die kaasmengsel. vou nou die room by die kaasmengsel in krap uit op die Oreokoekies en laat vir ten minste 4 uur in jou yskas haal dit uit jou losboompan en versier met ‘n flake of enige iets anders. 4

World Cancer Day Each year on 4 February, World Cancer Day empowers all of us across the world to show support, raise our collective voice, take personal action and press our governments to do more. World Cancer Day is the only day on the global health calendar where we can all unite and rally under the one banner of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. The importance of World Cancer Day: The global cancer epidemic is huge and is set to rise. Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which 4 million are premature deaths (aged 30 to 69 years). Urgent action needs to be taken to raise awareness about the disease and to develop practical strategies to address the cancer burden. Global disparities in access to prevention, treatment and palliative care are growing exponentially.
World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds, in the world’s media, and on the global health and development agenda. World Cancer Day is an initiative by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). UICC is the leading international nongovernmental organisation that unites the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to promote greater equity, and to integrate cancer control into the world health and development agenda. What is cancer? Cancer is a disease which occurs when changes in a group of normal cells within the body lead to uncontrolled, abnormal growth forming a lump called a tumour; this is true of all cancers except leukaemia (cancer of the blood). If left untreated, tumours can grow and spread into the surrounding normal tissue, or to other parts of the body via the bloodstream and lymphatic systems, and can affect the digestive, nervous and circulatory systems or release hormones that may affect body function. Cancer tumours can be divided into three groups: Benign tumours: These are not cancerous and rarely threaten life. They tend to grow quite slowly, do not spread to other parts of the body and are usually made up of cells quite similar to normal or healthy cells. They will only cause a problem if they grow very large and becoming uncomfortable or press on other organs - for example a brain tumour inside the skull. World Cancer Day Continued from page 5 Cells of malignant tumours can break off from the main (primary) tumour and spread to other parts of the body through a process known as metastasis. Upon invading healthy tissue at the new site they continue to divide and grow. These secondary sites are known as metastases and the condition is referred to as metastatic cancer.
Key Cancer facts 10 million people die from cancer every year. At least one third of common cancers are preventable. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide. 70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries.
Precancerous: This term describes the condition involving abnormal cells which may (or is likely to) develop into cancer.
Up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and treatment.
Types of cancers:
The total annual economic cost of cancer is estimated at US $1.16 trillion.
Carcinoma: A cancer that arises from the epithelial cells (the lining of cells that helps protect or enclose organs). Carcinomas may invade the surrounding tissues and organs and metastasise to the lymph nodes and other areas of the body. The most common forms of cancer in this group are breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Sarcoma: A type of malignant tumour of the bone or soft tissue (fat, muscle, blood vessels, nerves and other connective tissues that support and surround organs). The most common forms of sarcoma are leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma and osteosarcoma. Lymphoma and Myeloma: Lymphoma and Myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which runs all through the body, and can therefore occur anywhere. Myeloma (or multiple myeloma) starts in the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to help fight infection. This cancer can affect the cell's ability to produce antibodies effectively. Leukaemia: Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cells and bone marrow, the tissue that forms blood cells. There are several subtypes; common are lymphocytic leukaemia and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Brain and spinal cord cancers: these are known as central nervous system cancers. Some are benign while others can grow and spread. Early detection can save lives: There are a number of cancers which can be identified early which helps to improve the chances of successful treatment outcomes, often at lower costs and with fewer (or less significant) side effects for patients. There are cost-effective tests that help detect colorectal, breast, cervical and oral cancers early and further tests are being developed for other cancers. Check with your doctor for guidance on the national recommendations regarding vaccinations, testing and screenings. These can and do vary from country to country. The domestic terminal at Cape Town International Airport saw only 51% of the volume of travelers compared with December 2019. A survey by NightsBridge, conducted after the announcement of the Garden Route as a hotspot, found that one-third of guesthouses on the Garden Route indicated at least 50% of festive season cancellations. The same study also reported that 12.7% of bookings in the Western Cape were cancelled. South Africa Tourism Survey (December 2020) found that 58% of tourism and hospitality businesses were unable to service their debts and 61% of businesses were unable to cover fixed costs in October 2020. This was before the Alert Level 3 restrictions were announced in December. Throughout this pandemic, we have argued for getting balance right in saving both lives and jobs, and we have not hesitated to take action in getting that balance right over the last year. The reality is that the balance is not being achieved currently and that the President needs to use the differentiated approach to help save jobs in the Western Cape and those provinces that have clearly passed their peak. Wat my help met covid Ek is jammer dat ek julle so verpes met Covid en as julle nie wil lees nie neem ek julle nie kwalik nie. Die doel van hierdie skrywe is om dalk vir iemand anders te help wat deur dieselfde simptome as ek gaan.

A special & rare sighting It happened during an afternoon drive in early November through Elim Ferricrete Fynbos, close to Africa’s southernmost tip and n a conservation area protected through the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area (SMA). There was much excitement when a mature Fynbos Buttonquail suddenly silently took flight from the fynbos, to land a few metres further. That’s when more movement caught the eye of NWSMA conservation farmer (and OCG board member), Mick D’Alton. Two tiny chicks scuttled and hid in the fynbos – patiently waiting for their parent to return (and confident of their camouflage in the fynbos).
The conservation team briefly took a few photos from a safe distance, but moved on quickly to allow the chicks to be reunited with their parent, who was hidden a short distance away. While the team couldn’t get photos of the parent, we could snap a few quickly of the chicks. Some of South Africa’s leading birding experts say that they’re unaware of photos of Fynbos Buttonquail chicks, which makes this OCG and NWSMA sighting a special one. The Fynbos Buttonquail is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. But the experts have vastly different estimates of the number of mature birds. The IUCN believes there are fewer than 1,000 mature individuals remaining in the fynbos, and that number is decreasing. A recent study by Dr Alan Lee (FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology), Brian Reeves and Dale Wright, found the numbers could be considerably higher. Their study, which took place across the fynbos biome, concluded that there could be around 89,000 individuals. The Fynbos Buttonquail is considered to be a fynbos endemic, which has the ability to disappear quickly in its habitat (its speckled rufous to light brown colouring helps camouflage the bird). Even during flush surveys, birds still have the ability to scuttle off, and are only flushed if they’re close to observers. Very little is also known about how it breeds and how many offspring it raises. The Buttonquail experts do agree on the threats to the species. The spread of invasive alien plants, agricultural expansion and changing fire frequencies in fynbos are all considered problematic for Fynbos Buttonquails. Unique individuals of the Overberg Continued from page 16 The Birkenhead is reputed to have had around 3-tonnes of gold aboard when she struck a rock off Danger Point, Gansbaai, and went down with hundreds of soldiers still in the ship. As divers, one could never get used to the overwhelming feeling being part of such a massive and exciting project. The temptation was often there to pinch oneself to “wake up from this dream”. Three ships as our main focus took up the bulk of Charlie’s and our time for over 30 years. The first was the Joanna (1682) with its unique silver cargo of ingots and coins. The next was the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros (1686) believed to be the most valuable wreck ever to go down on the South African coast. The third was the Dutch East Indiaman Brederode (1785) with its well over 100,000 porcelain items as cargo and tonnes of tin ingots as valued ballast. As members came and went over time, when Charlie found what most believed to be the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros in 1999, he became the only one of the initial six members that discovered the Joanna in 1982, to be involved with the discovery of all three of the treasure ships mentioned. A most remarkable achievement!
I often heard of people that, for one reason or another, visited and met Charlie for the first time in those months. They were all very impressed and characterised him as an outstanding host and a true gentleman with impeccable manners. Charlie will be missed by us all, and I doubt if the Overberg will ever be blessed with such a unique diving personality again.

Sadly, this unique Overberg individual and real gentleman was diagnosed with cancer in the mid-2000’s. Again, Charlie not having a lazy bone in his body and having the already mentioned huge heart and endless amount of guts took on this new life-threatening challenge head on. During the period of his battle, he still found the time and energy to run the Historical Wreck Society. Throughout committee meetings, when some members drifted off the point of order, one could sporadically see Charlie wishing the time to pass, while sitting there in obvious agonising discomfort. Admirably, he never dampened their fun by calling them to order.

During those challenging times, Charlie never allowed anybody to see the slightest possible form of weakness or illness – a true champion and an honourable Gentleman! In his last days, he remained frantically busy getting his affairs in order. All photographs and artefacts were organised and recorded as was all his possessions. Most of his maritime equipment was sold in this time while dealing himself short on much-needed rest. Sadly, and contrary to his wishes, his priceless “Shapiro Artefact Collection” was not kept as such for prosperity, but rather, after his passing, auctioned off to the highest bid. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Unique individuals of the Overberg One of the Overberg’s most successful sons and divers is the late Charlie Shapiro (1945-2013). It is almost as if he wanted to set the bar of standards for those before and after him. This author first met Charlie in the early 70’s as the captain of an opposing underwater hockey team. With me being the captain of the Maties (Stellenbosch University) team, Charlie was my primary opponent. It was during these games that he won my eternal admiration. Charlie’s big heart, the effort that he always put in, the sheer guts and will to win, was always clear to see. These remarkable and admirable attributes remained with him for the rest of his life that was prematurely and sadly to end, due to cancer, in 2013.
Charlie became a Cape Town wreck diver in the late 70’s. He was bitten by the ‘treasure bug’ ‒ later to become the ‘archaeology bug’ ‒ after visiting another of the Overberg’s great divers, Gavin Clackworthy. During this visit, Gavin took him to dive on the Dutch ship Reygersdahl (1747) where he found his first real treasure – a valuable 8-Real Spanish silver “Pillar Dollar”. Charlie was hooked for life! Once home again, Charlie approached his successful businessman and brother, Mickey, for the possible financing of such shipwrecked ventures. Soon afterwards, and with tonnes of diving apparatus, Charlie hit the road to Cape Town with his fully equipped boat on tow called SEAKER. For us Capetonian’s, SEAKER was fantastic – with strapped in aqualungs, compressor, magnetometer, etc. Not to mention his beautiful Range Rover 4x4. For us seldom seen and very impressive! Soon Charlie had got a team (called SEALIT) of the best divers together namely, Gavin Clackworthy, Eric Lombard, André Hartman, Mickey Shapiro and Burt Kutzer. Each of the divers was expected to be full-time committed to the search. Equipped with Gavin’s research, they had identified as their first target the English East Indiaman, Joanna (1682). A very intriguing story of hardships, searching, miles and miles of swimming in shark infested waters, and late night discussions on the interpretations of the literature, was to follow. As a result, on the 23rd November 1982, the Joanna was discovered with her fabled cargo of silver. Charlie’s next significant discovery was that of the Dutch East Indiaman Schonenberg (1722). Charlie was never one to sit around idly. One day at Struis Bay, Charlie and Mike, both members of the then newly formed group of six called Aqua Exploration (of which the author was one), were utterly bored 16
and did not wish to sit around any longer, waiting for ideal survey weather. As things would have it, the weather turned out to be better than predicted. However, as the “if you want the latest weather report, just look out of the window” method did not leave enough time to go to the far off designated survey area, Charlie decided to play around and survey Northumberland Reef close by. The afternoon’s work proved to be a great success with them not only locating and pinpointing the Schonenberg (1722), but also the English East Indiaman Duke of Northumberland (1838), after which the reef was renamed.
The use of technology was always high up on Charlie’s importance list. Our group was the first to use the soft riding twin hull Bud-Cat boats. Furthermore, we utilised navigational position finders long before any other group. Attached to the latter, a track plotter was connected, the use of which was unheard of at the time. Due to Charlie’s push for, and motivational sales pitch, we were also the first to own a Blower (apparatus able to displace tonnes of sand overburden in minutes). Again thanks to Charlie, we also went on to develop the only deep-water Blower on the continent. The next three major finds were the English East Indian Colebrook (1778) lying at Koeël Bay in False Bay, the Portuguese East Indian Santiago (1585) resting on the southern side of Bassa de India, Indian Ocean, and the British iron vessel Borderer lounging in the deep water off Struis Point, near the town of Arniston.
With the Colebrook’s unique artefacts and heavy cargo of copper and lead, the Santiago’s load of over 400-year-old silver 8-Real coins and the Borderer’s tonnes of tin ingots, all three ships were highly significant finds. Charlie’s persuasiveness and ability to swing a good deal also made it possible for us to be part of the biggest salvage attempt in the southern hemisphere – the salvage of the British HMS Birkenhead (1852).
