Goeiedag en hartlik welkom by uitgawe 46… ons laaste een voor Kersfees. Op Kersdag gaan ons so ruskansie vat en die uitgawes sal weer voortgaan vanaf die 1ste Januarie 2021. Gun my dus net die geleentheid om aan elke leser en ondersteuner van hiérdie uitsonderlike publikasie, ‘n geseënde en vredevolle Kersfees toe te wens. Mag elkeen van julle dit geniet saam met jul families en vriende.

In hiérdie uitgawe het ons nie baie geskryf nie, maar daar is ‘n groot aantal pragtige foto’s van gebeurlikhede en nuuswaardighede in ons omgewing. Die skolenuus is propvol in hiérdie uitgawe en daar is ‘n verskeidenheid van aktiwiteite wat by ons skole plaasgevind het. As jy graag jou skool se nuus wil publiseer in volkleur, kan jy ons ook gerus kontak by die besonderhede onderaan die bladsy. Ons is verbind daartoe om sover moontlik al die skolenuus te plaas wat ons ontvang en laat nie sommer berigte en foto’s onbepaald oorstaan nie. Op bladsy 4 kuier ons weer lekker in die kombuis met twee van lekkerste resepte volgens my en wat sommer baie maklik is om te maak. Die Geelsterte het hul opwagting gemaak op Struisbaai en heelwat van dié blinklywe is die afgelope week gevang. Ons het pragtige foto’s van die vangste binne.

Belangrik hiérdie week is ook die COVID-19 opgedateerde verslag van Premier Alan Winde en algemene veiligheidsmaatreëls vir die feestyd wat voorlê. Jimmy Herbert is ook weer terug hierdie week met ‘n uitstekende berig oor die Arniston (1815) se stranding en wat werklik gedurende die stranding plaasgevind het en dit is werklik goeie en uiters akkurate skryfwerk deur ‘n kundige op die gebied van ons maritieme geskiedenis hiér in die Overberg. Skolenuus uit ons streek Laerskool Bredasdorp het verlede week ‘n Spesiale Toekenningsaand aangebied en ons deel graag die foto’s van hiérdie toekennings met julle.
Hierdie drie nuwe BD's van Hoërskool Bredasdorp (gr. 8 in 2021) het as ’n span deelgeneem aan die Lomond Driekamp se 22 km ‘Sprint’. Hul het 2de gekom in hul ouderdomskategorie. Baie geluk dan aan Minke Terblanche, Suzanne Pretorius en Dian Fourie. Foto: Hoërskool Bredasdorp/Facebook
Mieke Saayman saam met die skoolhoof van Laerskool Bredasdorp, mnr. Dwain Brown. Sy ontvang die volgende toekennings:
Trofee vir uitstaande leierskap. (Mieke was ook Hoofdogter van Laerskool Bredasdorp 2020) Zoë Louw prys vir beste prestasie in Afrikaans Huistaal. Die Arthur Janson-prys vir die beste prestasie in Wiskunde. Die Albert Myburgh-toekenning vir die beste prestasie in Natuurwetenskappe. Die Laerskool Bredasdorp-prys vir die beste prestasie in Sosiale Wetenskappe. Die Du Toit De Villiers-prys vir die beste prestasie in Ekonomiese Bestuurswetenskappe. Die Bredasdorp Steenwerke-prys vir die beste prestasie in Tegnologie. Dux leerder vir 2020. Hoërskool Bredasdorp se hoofseun vir 2021, George de Kock, het aan die einde van September deelgeneem aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch se unieke aanlyn Wetenskap EXPO. Hy het ‘n rekenaarprogram geskryf wat wiskundige vergelykings kon oplos. Hy het na die verloop van die EXPO goud verwerf en is uitgenooi om sy EXPO ook vir die nasionale kompetisie in te skryf. Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw
INGELEGDE KERRIEVIS Bestandele: 1 kg stokvisstukke sout en varsgemaalde swartpeper na smaak 250 ml (1 koppie) koekmeelblom 2 ekstragroot eiers, geklits 125 ml (½ koppie) kookolie Kerriesous: 3 groot uie, geskil en in skywe gesny 375 ml (1½ koppies) bruinasyn 60 ml (¼ koppie) water 45 ml (3 eetlepels) suiker 5 ml (1 teelepel) borrie 10 ml (2 teelepels) kerriepoeier 1 ml fyn paprika 4 lourierblare 8 peperkorrels sout na smaak Metode:
Plaas die visstukke in ’n bak. Indien bevrore vis gebruik word, laat dit ongeveer 30 minute staan om effens te ontvries. Meng die geurmiddels met meel. Rol vis in die gegeurde meel. Verhit ’n braaipan met olie. Dompel vis in die geklitste eier en plaas direk in die warm olie. Braai vis vir ongeveer 5 minute aan elke kant of tot goudbruin. Verwyder die vis dan uit die olie en dreineer. Sous: Kook al die bestanddele saam in ’n swaarboomkastrol vir ongeveer 10 minute. Plaas die helfte van die vis op die bodem van ’n diep opdienbak. Giet die helfte van uiemengsel oor. Herhaal met die vis en sous en plaas in yskas oornag sodat geur kan deurtrek. Bedien die vis dan met ‘hotcross’ buns, broodrolletjies of selfs kapokaartappels. HAM & KAAS AARTAPPELS Bestandele: 4 groot aartappels (met skil aan) Botter om aartappels te smeer 6 eetlepels botter 3 eetlepels gerasperde uie ½ teelepel peper 2 medium eiers 2 koppies gerasperde cheddar kaas, verdeel in die helfte 1 koppie blokkies gaar ham 2 gekapte grasuie Metode:
Verhit die oond tot 180 grade. Was en droog aartappels. Vryf elke aartappel met botter . Prik aartappels verskeie kere met vurk. Bak vir 1 uur by 180 grade. Sny die aartappel in die helfte en skep die aartappelvleis uit. Sit skille op gesmeerde oondpan. In ‘n groot bak, klop aartappels vir 1 minuut. Voeg botter, uie, eiers en peper by . Klop tot glad en romerig. Vou in een koppie kaas en ½ koppie van ham, vul aartappel doppe met mengsel. Top met die oorblywende 1 koppie kaas, en die oorblywende ½ koppie ham. Bak by 180 grade vir 15-20 minute of tot die aartappels deeglik verhit en kaas gesmelt is. Strooi die grasuie oor en geniet dit. Twee leerders van Laerskool Swellendam uitstekend presteer op die musiekfront. Jana Swart (Gr. 7), het haar Graad 3 Unisa Musiekteorie-eksamen met 100% voltooi. Sy is dus die ontvanger van die Hennie Joubert Meriete Prys. Hierdie prys word slegs landswyd aan die top twee kandidate per graad toegeken. Pedri Louw (Gr. 4), het ook tydens die grendeltydperk sy Graad 1 Unisa Blokfluiteksamen met lof geslaag. Update on the coronavirus Premier Alan Winde
As of 13h00 on the 15th of December, the Western Cape has 24 485 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 157 348 confirmed cases and 127 687 recoveries. The number of cases we have recorded in the province have now surpassed the number of cases we experienced during the first peak. Our test positivity rates and our hospitalisations are also rapidly approaching the levels we saw during the first peak. The number of deaths in the province are also starting to increase. The situation is serious and we should all treat it as such. During the first wave of the pandemic, we took the decision to open and operate field hospitals in the metro, to manage the hospital load. We have continued to operate the Brackengate Hospital of Hope which has a 338 bed capacity throughout this period, mindful that a second wave would be possible. This hospital continues to function and we currently have 253 patients admitted there. In the rural areas of the province, our focus was on putting extra beds into our own facilities, which will act as legacy projects and which will expand the capacity and improve the functioning of our hospitals, in George, Hermanus, Worcester, Paarl and Vredendal beyond COVID-19 and into the future. Approximately 300 acute beds and 135 ICU beds have been added into our system this way. For the second wave, we will be taking this same approach in the metro region so that the investment into healthcare that we make now, remains in our own infrastructure and does not need to be closed down again at a later date. This way it will continue to benefit the province and its residents well into the future, in line with our commitment to dignity and wellbeing. We have identified potential for another 180 beds in the metro, depending on the installation of oxygen points and staff availability. These can be scaled up if and when they are required. Since the beginning of this pandemic, the Western Cape Government has worked hard to ensure appropriate care for those who need it. Throughout the second wave, we will continue to do this, however we need residents to work with us to flatten the curve and reduce the pressure on our hospital systems and the healthcare workers.
Our health care workers have had a long year at the frontline, they are tired and they remain at high risk for contracting COVID-19 themselves. The best way we can protect them, is by protecting ourselves. We must all take the appropriate safety measures to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19: wear your mask, wash your hands and practise social distancing. This festive season, avoid large crowds, gatherings and places where there is close contact or overcrowding. I also call on everyone to use alcohol responsibly to reduce the burden of trauma on our hospital systems. The Western Cape Government, together with law enforcement, the Western Cape Liquor Authority and traffic are also increasing enforcement operations throughout this time. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

The steady destruction of the ship, whilst the carpenter’s mate was still on board, thus totals around six hours – far from a few minutes as stated by Captain Hall. The over 350 or so unfortunate souls could have been spared much anguish had it but been a few minutes.
Hundreds of passengers and the crew desperately clung to the wreckage as the sea propelled the masses shoreward. Falling masts and objects crushed some, while others found themselves pulverised between large drifting ship sections. It is clear that the implosion of the decks in all probability killed most. An inability to swim or swim the full distance, while also avoiding the obstructions created by the fast break-up of the ship, killed the others. It was mentioned to be in pitch darkness that the carpenter's mate, full of wounds, bruises and barely still alive, amazingly made it to shore. With barely any energy left, Scott had crawled up the nearest dune finding shelter from the piercing cold under one of the few bushes found in that area. Scott mentions that he experienced an almost unbearable feeling of discomfort due to the amount of water he had swallowed. Fortunately, the energy cost of this fight for life resulted in him losing consciousness, followed by a deep sleep.

The 31st of May, on awakening to the welcome warmth of sunrise the next morning, the carpenter’s mate heard voices that turned out to be two of his shipmates. He anxiously wanted to join them, but as he put it, "I endeavoured to go down to them, but my legs refused their office, and I crawled forward to them on my hands and knees". As was the case the night before that the surf was still running high with timbers, planks, masts, sails, stores, personal items, and bodies had already washed out high onto the beach. When Scott looked around him, he was met with the sight of destruction. Scattered on the beach were some bodies and many artefacts. Out to sea, where the once impressive Arniston transport had struck slightly more than twelve hours earlier, almost nothing remained. There were some bodies lying in the proximity. Among them were Lord Robert Molesworth, his wife Lady Francois Molesworth, the Agent Lieutenant Brice, the ship's master Captain Simpson and the four sons of Colonel Geils. It was said that Lord and Lady Molesworth were found still embraced in the arms of each other ("closely locked in each other's arms", Chester Courant, 1815). The six survivors immediately buried those mentioned. Two years later after hearing the full tragic story from the locals, Admiral Brenton, wrote "... these poor fellows had evidently taken a very deep interest in the fate of these children, as it was the only grave that they had marked distinctly ...". 15

ARNISTON - 1815 “What happened on that tragic night?”
In the late afternoon (17h08) of the 30th of May 1815, the Troop ship Arniston struck our shores. A horrific tragedy was to follow as she went to pieces. The question today is, “how do we know that she stranded on that day, and at that time?”, and for that matter, “How do we know at all what happened exactly?” Of the approximately 350-360 people on board, only six were fortunate enough to make it to shore alive. These six being the carpenter’s mate, Charles Steward Scott with five sailors, Philip Shea, William Drummond, William Fish, Thomas Mansfield and John Lewis. After a local farmer’s son had found them, they were transported later to the Cape where they arrived on 26 June. The ship's augmented breaking up followed with both bow and stern now pitched high up on the reef; seawater was rushing in whilst ever increasing the weight of the unsupported middle ship section; the deck eventually imploded down onto those hiding below, when the vessel parted in the middle at the gangway and broke her back. Scott and the surviving sailors told of the horror and agony experienced when they heard the wails and screams of the helpless women, children and incapacitated wounded soldiers. All was amplified at the point that the decks imploded down on them. They later related, "The dreadful screams would have agonised the most obdurate heart, many of whom having kept below, were killed by the falling on of the deck".
Part of the answer to our questions posed above is that the very next day, Scott gave an official written statement of what had taken place. Interestingly enough, and not known to many, the historical record shows us today that no less than two declarations were recorded. Both are almost identical. The one, used by all previous authors on the topic, is a 470 words shorter version (747 versus 1217 words) than the one this author found in two British Newspapers, Bury and Norwich Post (Wednesday, 1 November 1815) and Stamford Mercury (Friday, 3 November 1815). The middle of the slightly more elaborated one contains more details of Scott's experiences on the sinking ship and of his ship-to-shore endeavour. It is often incorrectly reported that the Arniston broke up within minutes. Even Captain Hall stated, "... the sea tore the ship to pieces in a few minutes ..." When following the chronology of events, one can deduce that the ship’s anchors were dropped soon after 16h00; two bower anchors parted soon after being dropped; they cut the sheet anchor around 17h00; Eight minutes later she struck, went fore and aft up onto sections of the reef and keeled over to the east; some sailors immediately tried to get the boat in readiness, and others attempted to make rafts for the same floatation purpose as the former, while most went to work to successfully cutting loose the carronades and cannon; at 20h00, the masts lost the battle against the elements, and all snapped not long after sundown (17h46). 16
It must have been around this time of the events of horror that Lord Molesworth is said to have acted. A man of God, honourable gentleman and consistently an example to all, now realising the end was near, took his wife into his arms and calmly addressed all those around him. Some eight years later, the author W.M. Harvard (1823) pointed out, "It has been stated by some of the survivors, that in the awful crisis which immediately preceded the sinking of the vessel, his lordship displayed the calmness of the Christian, and endeavoured to impress on the minds of his fellow -sufferers the importance of preparing, by penitence and prayer, to meet their God". With the middle section of the ship now swiftly being decimated, only the stern and the forecastle were left standing. Scott states that persons of all ranks, sexes and ages crowded together on the latter in a last desperate attempt to prolong their lives. The sea was breaking with force over the fully exposed areas wiping off those still clinging on for dear life. The carpenter’s mate describes how, from the forecastle, he and several others had climbed further forward onto the bowsprit only to be smashed off by a massive wave some minutes later.
Fortunately, Scott caught hold of a rope, pulled himself back onto the bowsprit and lashed himself to the latter. Just before this, and in anticipation of the inevitable swimming for his life, Scott had decreased his possible clothing drag by stripping himself of both shirt and waistcoat. Ten minutes later, he was again washed off completely. This time he clung to a plank for floatation and started the struggle to shore. To stay alive, he had to fight with all the energy he could muster, as, according to him and the others, the safety of the shore was two miles further (3219 metres).
