‘n Hartlike goeiedag en baie welkom by die 45ste uitgawe van ons gemeenskapsblad OVERdeBERG. Nog steeds ‘n absolute voorreg om hiérdie blad op ‘n weeklikse basis aan julle te bring met die samewerking van ‘n span van 4 medewerkers. Aan hulle ook ‘n baie groot dankie vir hulle uitstekende en harde werk elke week. Dit word raakgesien en opreg waardeer.

Met Kersfees wat vinnig nader kom en die feestyd wat alreeds met ons is, wil ek graag van my kant af vra dat ons almal ons deel moet doen om die COVID-19 pandemie die hok te slaan. Die dra van maskers is nie altyd die maklikste ding om te doen nie en is meestal erg ongemaklik, maar dit is absoluut nodig en veral nou waar daar ‘n moontlike 2de vlaag van die virus met ons is. Terug by OVERdeBERG… in hiérdie week se uitgawe berig ons oor die pragtige prestasie van Dennis Bogenhagen, daar word weer lekker gekuier in die kombuis en ons skolenuus dek weer so paar interessanthede. Lunette het gaan inloer op Elim by ‘n welwillendheidsprojek wat hier net voor Kersfees soveel van ons oues van dae se harte gaan bly maak. Dan het Lunette ook vir ons bietjie gaan uitvind rondom die Adventtyd en is daar ook ‘n pragtige berig daaroor. Heelwat nuwe “dierebaba’s” is die afgelope maande gebore in die Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA en ons berig ook daaroor.

Ukunukamva National Gospel Awards 2020
3 die grootste van plesier vir Dennis gedoen. Dennis se program M.A.D. op Radio Overberg fm, fokus op mense wat werklikwaar ‘n verskil maak in die samelewing. Hy bevorder ook Gospelmusiek en speel die nuutste musiek wat beskikbaar raak. Sy fokus is nie net plaaslik nie, maar oral waar hy voel mense doen goed vir hulself of hul gemeenskap en styg uit bo hul omstandighede. Hy is ook welbekend by gewilde Gospelkunstenaars in Amerika, sowel as hul aanlyn TV-aanbieders.
Lunette Coetzee Die Ukunukamva Gospel awards 2020 bestaan al die afgelope drie jaar en verlede jaar was Dennis Bogenhagen genomineer vir ‘Publick Speaker of The Year 2019’. Hy het toe al verbaas deur as plattelandse deelnemer die gesogte toekenning te wen.
Dennis plaas sy fokus veral ook op die jeug en spandeer gereeld tyd om jong rymkletsers en digters die geleentheid te gee om hul talente ten toon te stel op sy program en almal, die jong mense en grootmense, het ingekoop en saamgespan om Dennis uiteindelik te laat seevier in sy poging om die toekenning in te palm. Saul Klaasen, een van die organiseerders, het Dennis verlede jaar op Facebook ontmoet nadat hy gesien het wat hy doen en hom genomineer vir sy eerste toekenning. Dennis wil dan ook net sy dank en waardering teenoor hom uitspreek... dat hy hom raakgesien het en aangemoedig het om deel te neem. Vir die bestuur van Radio Overberg fm ook ‘n groot dankie dat hy ‘n omroeper by die stasie kan wees en waar hy ‘n platvorm gegee word om himself uit te leef. Foto’s: Verskaf Vanjaar was Dennis se grootste uitdaging toe hy as genomineerde in die ‘Afrikaanse Radio Omroeper’ kategorie deelgeneem het. Hy het teen groot radiostasies te staan gekom en met die louere weggestap as ‘Ukunukamva Afrikaanse Gospel Omroeper van die Jaar’ onder groot toejuiging van die skare. Die spoggeleentheid is verlede Saterdag 5 Desember gehou te Makhaza, in Khayelitsha by ’n topgehalte Salvation Church Hall. Dennis bedank sy familie wat hom so mooi bystaan en tyd gun om sy geliefde radio program ‘Make A Difference’ met Dennis op Radio Overberg 101.8fm elke Sondag om 18h00 uit te saai. Hy wil ook die gemeenskap en FB-vriende bedank wat die vertroue in hom gehad het om vir hom te stem. Elke deelnemer moes stemme inwin om uiteindelik die wenner te kon wees. Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw
VARKSNOETJIES Bestandele: 10 snye vars brood (platgerrol met 'n koekroller) botter of olyfolie 20 velle gesnyde kaas sout en peper 20 repies spek (1 pak in die helfte gesny) Metode: Smeer die platgerolde brood met botter, en plaas stukke kaas op. Rol dit dan stewig toe en sny die rolletjie in die helfte. Draai dit met die spek toe, en steek dit vas met tandestokkies. Braai oor 'n mediumwarm vuur net voor die kole reg is vir die groot braai. Ideaal as peuselhappie of ‘n voorgereg wat ook met ‘n doopsous van jou keuse bedien kan word.
PYNAPPEL, MANGO & KLAPPERBLOKKIES Bestandele: 20 cm x 20 cm oondbak of bakplaat bakpapier word benodig. Kors 190 ml koekmeel 30 ml suiker 65 ml ongesoute botter 125 ml fyn klapper Vrugtevla 190 ml suiker 65 ml koekmeel 2 eiers 125 ml mangosap 125 ml pynappelsap 5 ml suurlemoensap Metode:
Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C.
Kors Voer die oondbak of bakplaat uit met bakpapier. Meng die meel en suiker bymekaar. Gebruik dan ‘n vurk om die botter in die meelmengsel in te sny totdat dit ‘n krummelrige mengsel is. Voeg dan die fyn klapper by, meng deur en druk stewig in die oondbak vas. Plaas in die oond en bak vir ongeveer 10 minute, of tot die randte begin verbruin. Vrugtevla Meng die suiker en koekmeel bymekaar. Klits dan die eiers in die meel mengsel in tot ‘n homogene mengsel vorm. Klits die mango, pynappel en suurlemoenn sap in die eier mengsel in totdat die mengsel glad is. Giet die hele sapmengsel versigtig dan bo-oor die warm kors. Verlaag die oond temperatuur na 160°C en bak vir ‘n verdere 35 minute of tot die vla gestol is. Laat toe om af te koel vir 60 minute. Verkoel in die yskas vir ten minste 1 uur voordat dit in blokkies (3 cm x 3 cm) gesny word. 4

Adré Kleyn (middel), graad 10-leerling by die Hoërskool Hermanus, is reeds 'n geruime tyd al besig om nuwe danspassies aan te leer. Haar harde werk word beloon, en na baie ure se oefen en toewyding, het sy 'n volle beurs ontvang vanaf ‘Danslyn’. Na 'n onlangse oudisie is Adré en 8 ander dansers uit die Wes-Kaap gekies om dan deel te wees van die Kyknet program, ‘Danslyn’. Die program word in Januarie opgeneem. Dade van welwillendheid op Elim Lunette Coetzee Dit so wonderlik om te weet dat daar in tye soos hiérdie mense is wat uitreik om harte te verryk en te verbly gedurende die Adventstyd.
Die ander breiers was dames by Geluksoord Bejaardeklub en ander soos Emmie Barends, Jennifer Moore, en dan ook Margaret self. Donasies het van die Faures, Avril Cloete, Lunette Coetzee en Jennifer Moore gekom. Avril Cloete en Carol October het die bakwerk gedoen. Dit is verbasend hoe gou 'n plan in werking gestel kan word. Ons saluteer die dames vir hul bydrae, maar veral Margaret Faure vir maande se brei- en hekelwerk en haar man Edgar vir sy onderskraging en bydrae. Foto: Lunette Coetzee Margaret Faure het met die breiprojek 'n paar belangstellendes vir maande motiveer om te hekel en brei aan kniekombersies vir die vroue en serpe vir die mans oor 80 op Elim. Daar is geskenkpakkies bestaande uit lekkers, koekies en ander versnapperinge (met die doel om uit te deel) dan ook in gereedheid gebring. Margaret Faure en haar man het al die geskenkpakkies aangekoop en voorberei. Daar was ook 'n paar vroue wat gebak het en donasies gegee het. Maande lank is daar aan die items gebrei en baie netjiese items is voorberei. Die groepe wat dan sal baatvind by dié projek, sluit in 37 senior burgers oor 80 jaar wat geskenkpakkies sal ontvang, Geluksoord Bejaardeklub wat 21 pakkies sal ontvang en al die leerders by Elim Morawiese Primêre Skool, asook al die Sondagskoolleerlinge ontvang van hiérdie pakkies. Die geskiedenis van Advent Lunette Coetzee
liseer, te midde van die dood en winterkoue. Later is daar Holly en ook Ivy gebruik. Die rooi kersies se rooi kleur wys na die bloed van Jesus, vir die vergifnis van sonde en nuwe lewe. Die dennebolle verwys na die nuwe lewe wat Jesus Christus deur sy opstanding bring. Die vier kerse word oor vier Sondae voor Kersfees aangesteek - een kers per Sondag en elkeen van die kerse dra 'n boodskap, een vir Hoop, een vir Geloof, een vir Vrede en een vir Vreugde. Vir die tydperk, pryk die Adventster. Kerkgangers, skyn ook die Adventster in hul onderskeie wonings oor hierdie belangrike tydperk. Weekliks word Liturgiese dienste, wat handel oor Advent, gehou en daar word ook Adventgesange gesing. Die sessensie van Advent is dus (1) Jesus het gekom en (2) Hy sal weer kom.
1 tot 24 Desember word as Advent deur baie Liturgiese Kerke waargeneem.Dit is 'n tyd van afwagting, en voorbereiding vir die Natiwiteit, asook die Wederkoms van Christus. Advent is die begin van die Westerse Kerklike jaar.

Die woord Advent, is afkomstig van die Latynse woord, Adventus, wat beteken koms in Grieks Parousia. Skoliere in die 4de en 5de eeu, in Spanje en Gaul het die Advent as 'n tyd van doop van nuwe Christene gesien, die begin van Januarie word EpifaniĂŤ ook waargeneem. Die krans en kerse: Die Adventkrans en -kerse het die eerste keer in 1839 in Duitsland verskyn. 'n Lutherse Predikant wat sendingwerk onder die kinders gedoen het, het 'n wawiel versier met kerse en 20 klein rooi kerse met 4 groot wit kerse aan die binnekant geplaas. Gedurende die week is die rooi kerse aangesteek, en vir vier Sondae, die wit kers. Later is dan ook immergroen blare vir die krans gebruik. Die immergroen blare het die ewige lewe simbo10

2020: A wonderful year for the Overberg wildlife Jacques Louw 2020 has been a wonderful year for the animal kingdom - especially in the Overberg. While their human counterparts have faced a pandemic, lockdown and a struggling economy during the year, the animals of the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area have responded jubilantly to the phenomenal rainfall.
Of all the NWSMA’s game, the bontebok have probably benefited the most from the green conditions. Given that there were fewer than 20 bontebok individuals left in past centuries, every baby born boosts this conservation success story. And this year there is certainly much to celebrate, with very few of the ewes not lambing.
The result was a bevy of brand-new babies, who are now thriving on the fast-growing vegetation available.
The vlei is full - and that means the hippos have loads of little places to hide. A beautiful drone photo (thanks to NWSMA Chair Dirk Human), was captured of a tiny hippo calf (look closely at the marked area).
The buffalo were released from the boma area, into the open NWSMA expanse at the end of last year. Although they had a brief stint back in the boma a few months ago, the additional 2500 hectares that they can now roam in freely, has resulted in a happy outcome with two new buffalo calves already born in 2020.
Mayhem & Corona may sound like perfect descriptions of 2020, but they’re also the names of some of the baby Rau Quaggas born this year. Four baby Rau Quaggas were born (the other two are called Acute and Mercury). Their stallion dads are Freddy (one of the top Rau Quaggas in the Quagga Project) and Soetanys. And each one of these youngsters looks a little more like the original Quagga.
It’s wonderful watching eland care for their young. The young join the eland ‘crèche’, with a few of the moms on constant duty, watching every movement the calves make. During 2020 they’ve been incredibly busy. The luscious green vegetation has certainly helped to bring about a host of eland babies, who now have plenty of milk available to them.
Some Blue Cranes are already parents in 2020, with chicks that hatched in November. Others have nested and are now waiting for their chicks to hatch. The dry conditions of past years have really impacted heavily on crane chicks in the NWSMA (from their monitoring and anecdotal evidence). So here’s to hoping 2020 will bring about a batch of baby Blue Cranes who manage to survive their vulnerable youth – until they can fly. Update on the coronavirus Premier Alan Winde As of 1pm on the 9th of December 2020, the Western Cape has 15 986 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 143 368 confirmed cases and 122 478 recoveries.
Businesses can support our efforts to ‘flatten the curve’ by: (1) Ensuring that all staff and customers wear masks, (2) Hand sanitisers are provided for customers and staff, (3) They limit the numbers of people allowed inside venues and stores, (4) Doors and windows are opened to allow for air flow (5) High traffic surfaces such as counters, card machines and door handles are regularly and thoroughly sanitised, (6) Positioning tables to allow for social distancing, and where possible, allowing for outdoor seating. We encourage residents to support businesses but to do so safely so that we continue to slow the spread:
You can do this by: (1) Wearing your mask, (2) Keeping a distance of 1.5 meters and avoiding queues if possible, (3) Avoiding places which are crowded, which do not allow for social distancing and which do not appear to be well ventilated, (4) Staying home if you feel ill or are experiencing symptoms. A study released by FinFind in collaboration with the Department of Small Business Development has found that 42% of small businesses in South Africa were forced to close as a result of the lockdown. The impact on jobs and livelihoods of these closures is enormous and it is for this reason that we should all do everything in our power to get the resurgence under control through our own actions. Photo: Western Cape Government On Wednesday the 9th of December, Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier and I visited some of the Long Street businesses to hand over COVID-19 business safety kits. These kits contain sanitisers, masks and informational posters and flyers to help stop the spread of COVID-19. We visited restaurants, coffee shops, takeaways and clothing stores to hand over the kits which will help to keep staff and customers safe this festive season. The province has made 11 000 of these kits available to small and informal businesses across the province to support safe trade. The Western Cape is now experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases ahead of the coming festive season and it is important that businesses and individuals alike play their part in ensuring that we ‘flatten the curve.’
Behaviour change is the most effective tool we have against this virus until a vaccine becomes widely available. If we all ensure that we are taking the appropriate safety measures this December, we can save both lives and jobs. In addition to behaviour change, we have also increased enforcement and we are working with law enforcement, SAPS, traffic services and the Western Cape liquor inspectors to ensure that businesses are abiding by the regulations and are adhering to safety protocols. I was happy to see a number of businesses along Long Street have safety measures in place, ranging from signs showing the maximum number of people allowed inside to "no mask no entry" signage. 14

LEGENDARY THREESOME DIVERS Continued from page 16 Tubby, in turn, was academically sharp, as well as an accomplished businessman. The synergy they jointly created, as already stated, led to many firsts in the South African wreckdiving world. Today all will agree that Tubby, like Brian, lived a life as Phillip K. Dick put it: "The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long!" This trio was the first in South Africa to realise the logic to go for the cargos of more modern and easier to find shipwrecks. They were also the first to use the latest technology to build aluminium boats (not easily damaged like fibreglass) and even the first blower (a vessel that thrust water down to displace sand on the ocean floor) in Africa. For this author, the two firsts that stand out most were the already mentioned Arniston Project and their generous donations to our local museum. Being sincerely interested in promoting maritime archaeology in this country, Seabed Enterprises, although a commercial salvage company, offered to sponsor the University of Cape Town, Department of Maritime Archaeology's Arniston Project financially. Apart from financial support, the three commercial divers provided personal diving services and expertise, as well as boats and high-tech survey and salvage equipment. In turn, most of the maritime donations made to the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum come from Tubby, Peter and Brian. The many artefacts ranging from a massive bronze VOC cannon to coins from India all recovered from the large number of shipwrecks they discovered and salvaged. An impressive list comprising of the Reijgersdaal (1702), Arniston (1815), Fame (1822), Willem de Zwyger (1863), Juno (1852), Borderer (1868), Dundrennan (1895), Queen of the Thames (1871) and many more can be accredited to their names. To top the lot, they donated almost the complete collection of artefacts archaeologically recovered from the wreck of the Arniston (1815), to the Museum ‒ this has never been done before or since. With fond memories, we salute them!

ARNISTON’s LEGENDARY THREESOME DIVERS In the 70’s the Overberg was entertained by the fantastic threesome, Brian Clarke, Tubby Gericke and Peter Leube. It was also these three men that embarked on the first maritime archaeology project (Arniston Project) in South Africa and with this find and others, they contributed significantly to our knowledge of the Overberg maritime history. The latter was one of many firsts in the Overberg that this group made possible.

With his large mother-ship, he went to the fishing areas far out to sea where he bought up all the 'chokka' (squid) catches of the day from the smaller boats. A win-win situation! Brian was reputed to go out boldly into any and every sea. He was not only knowledgeable but also fearless, hardworking, idealised and liked, as well as an honest guy. It was only natural that Brian Clark would, like with his wreck diving, again be highly successful in his fishing venture. All of his many friends and idolising followers were sad when Brian unexpectedly passed away on Friday, the 8th of February 2008. Last but by no means least, there was Tubby Gericke. Tubby was an academic type of diver with an exceptionally sharp mind. Like most highly intellectual people, Tubby was always searching for answers and forever pondering more deeply, the mysteries of life. Tubby was by far the most intricate of this highly talented group. As one of his closest friends, Jan Davey, once put it: "A creature so complex that I will need the space of a full -blown biography to capture a little of my understanding of him". This author seconds this opinion. Those fortunate enough to have known or even met Tubby, will no doubt always remember how his eyes twinkled with mischief and his abundance of energy. Tubby could get anybody and everybody enthusiastic about things. Furthermore, his brilliant debating ability was the sword at his side. When Tubby started talking seriously, the most he said would be way over our heads. It was often stated in those days, 'too high to come by'!
The diving teams to follow in the wake of these three were always six and more members in number, each specialising in one or more aspects of maritime administration and record keeping, research, search, salvage, restoration, preservation and even marketing. Seabed Enterprises were so multitalented that collectively the three were able to do everything on their own. Not only were they a three-man-army but the standards they set for those to follow were exceptional and proved to be impossible to mirror. A bit more about these individuals. Unfortunately for us, today Peter Leube is the only living member of Seabed Enterprises. Peter was a lot younger, much quieter and more reserved than the other two. Brian and Tubby took most of the limelight while Peter played his part in the background. Peter as his surname indicates is from German descent but was born in South Africa. His love for the ocean began as a teenager, leading him to the SA Navy, SA sport spearfishing teams and later to becoming a member of South Africa's most famous and successful salvage company to date, Seabed Enterprises. After retiring at an early age, he together with Tubby invested in a plastics manufacturing company, which was speedily listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. His adventurous nature then led him to Zimbabwe where he purchased a game and cattle farm and started two plastics factories. In 2002, it was 'acquired' by the Zimbabwe Government without compensation. Peter then followed his heart back to the sea in Mozambique doing sport fishing and many crossings of the Atlantic. His yearning for sailing lured him to the Caribbean where he has been a successful charter-captain to this day. The next person to be mentioned is Brian Clark. Clark was more than likely one of the very best spear fishermen South Africa has ever produced. Brian, the hero of most (this author included), was a South African Spearfishing National Champion from 1965 to 1970. He also captained the first Springbok spearfishing team to the World championships in Cuba in the mid-1960s. The well-known author of Shipwrecks and Salvage in South Africa, Malcolm Turner, categorically stated, "Brian Clark was a real gentleman", something he was not prepared to say of many others. After wreck diving, Brian had the vision to see the need of a mother ship with an enormous freezing capacity. 16

Tubby was a bit of a loner, and like this author, he preferred to spearfish on his own. Many an old diver may still remember his black and yellow aluminium boat SPRAT, drifting next to the wreck of the Pioneer (1974), or far out to sea on the Five Mile Banks. This always entailed a man behind the wheel and only one diver in the water – Tubby. After the disbanding of Seabed Enterprises, all three men started new ventures. As mentioned, Tubby had many ideas, and he spent many lengthy periods of time cognitively working through them. It was while walking up and down the long beach at Struis Bay that Sun Pack, his brainchild, was born. Tubby and his brave friends, of which Peter was one, who invested in Sun Pack all eventually walked away well rewarded and financially made men!
In the 1980s, one of the nicest houses in Struis Bay was that of Tubby Gericke in Heide Avenue, no more than 240 metres as the crow flies from the harbour's slipway – a diver's dream. On either side of the entrance to his lovely holiday home, Tubby proudly boasted no less than two, three-ton Reijgerdaal (1747) brass cannon. The De Wet family of the farm, De Wetshof, later took ownership and proudly display these guns on their farm today. In the diving world, Brian and Tubby were a lot like Lennon and McCarthy from Beatles fame. Together they were unbeatable and unmatched!
