Goeiedag en dit is tyd vir nog ‘n uitgawe van OVERdeBERG… die 42ste een om presies te wees! OVERdeBERG het alreeds ‘n ongelooflike pad gestap in ‘n kort tydjie en die ondersteuning van die Overbergse gemeenskap is ‘n riem onder die hart. Daagliks ontvang ons positiewe woorde.

Hiérdie uitgawe is glad nie anders nie en ons bou voort op ‘n alreeds pragtige produk deur dit dag na dag en week na week te verbeter. In hiérdie week se uitgawe is dit Minister Ivan Meyer van die Wes-Kaap Regering se besoek wat oor berig word, ons kuier weer lekker in die kombuis met twee ‘watertandlekker’ resepte en daar is ‘n beriggie oor die laaste aflewering van voedsel deur die Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA vir hulpbehoewendes. Dan gaan loer ons weer vinnig in by die Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit, ons gaan stap saam met Bredasdorp Gemeenste en op Elim is dit die ‘Meals on Wheels’ uitreik by Mispah Skool wat Lunette Coetzee gaan bywoon het.

Minister Meyer bring ‘n besoek aan Bredasdorp Letty-Ann Möller

Foto: Verskaf Op Vrydag die 13de November 2020, het die Wes-Kaap Regering se Minister van Landbou, Dr. Ivan Meyer, ‘n strategiese besoek gebring aan Bredasdorp. Hy het in die ABSA-gebou by Bredasdorp Park belanghebbendes uit die gemeenskap toegespreek. Hy het onder andere met die VLV van Bredasdorp gepraat en die volgende gesê: “Ek praat nou met die vroue wat die mans se kop draai om te bepaal in watter rigting hy moet beweeg." Verder het hy ook die volgende genoem: “Die Overbergstreek dra 14% by tot die landbou-ekonomie. Van die regeringskant kan jy die Overberg nie miskyk nie. Jy moet hom raak kyk, want hiérdie syfers vertel die verhaal. Overberg se opbrengs van graangewasse en tuinbou is bogemiddeld in Suid-Afrika. In 2013 het graangewasse met 333% toegeneem en hiérdie seisoen gaan nog beter opbrengste lewer. Hierdie is die grootste graanoes van die afgelope 50 jaar a.g.v. goeie reën, goeie klimaat en goeie humiditeit."
A final delivery for joint Food Relief Programme Jacques Louw The 30th of October marked the final delivery of the Food Relief Programme - a joint project between partners (coordinated by the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA). Since June, this partnership has been serving warm stews to those most impacted by the lockdown. With the help of the most wonderful donors, we were able to serve more than 1600 warm stews a day, 5 days a week to those most in need. More feedback on the programme will be provided in the coming days, as the activities are being wrapped up.

ASPERSIEVIS Bestandele:
1 x 430 g blikkie aspesries 750 g dik stokvisfilette (hake) sout en peper 250 ml gerasperde kaas 45 ml botter 45 ml koekmeel 2,5 ml mosterpoeier 100 ml melk
Metode: VARKLIES Bestandele: 1,5 kg varklies bakpoeier growwe sout 1 ui (grofgekap) 1 wortel (grofgekap) 6 knoffelhuisies (fyngemaak) tiemie pietersielie salie 2 koppies water 1 bottel Savanna, of 2 - 3 koppies appelsap, afhangende van die grootte van bak. 1 koppie room
Dreineer die aspersies maar behou die vloeistof. Geur vis na smaak met sout en peper en pak dit in ‘n oondbak. Pak die aspersies bo-op die vis, maak toe en sit eenkant. Smelt die botter in ‘n klein kastrolletjie en roer die meel by.
Roer tot daar geen klonte is nie en laat die mengsel effens kook om die meel gaar te kry. Giet nou stadig die aspersievloeistof by terwyl jy aanhoudend roer. Gooi ook genoeg melk by om ‘n dik witsous te maak. Skep sous oor vis en sprinkel met kaas. Bak teen 180° C vir 30 minute of tot gaar. Lewer 4 porsies saam met kapokaartappels en geroosterde groente. Metode: Maak diagonale (of diamant) snytjies in die vel van die varklies. Vryf dan die bakpoeier en growwe sout in die vel in. Plaas die ui, wortel, knoffel en kruie onder in ‘n groot oondskottel en plaas die varklies daarop, vel na bo. Voeg die water en Savanna of applesap by, maar maak seker dat die vel droog bly. Bak oop vir ‘n uur en ‘n half teen 160 ºC. Haal uit en voeg enige groente by. Bak verder oop, vir nog ‘n uur en ‘n half. Haal die varklies en groente uit en voeg ‘n koppie room by die vleissappe. Plaas in ‘n kastrol en laat dit kook totdat die sous verminder en verdik het. Bedien 6 porsies saam met groentes.

Kersete by Mispah Skool Lunette Coetzee Vrydag 13 November was 'n besondere dag vir die leerders van Mispah Skool vir LSEN in Elim. ‘Meals on Wheels’ in Struisbaai, is een van die organisasies wat deur die Sewende Dag Adventiste Kerk bestuur word. Dié kerk bied al vir jare etes aan oues van dae en ander behoeftiges as hul deel van ‘n uitreikprogram. Die Struisbaai-tak, bied ook skuiling aan kinders wat deur die hof na hulle vir toesig en sorg gestuur word.
Saloma vind die leerders ook goedgemanierd en baie waarderend, asook uniek en hulle is na aan haar hart. Hulle weet hoe om dankie te sê. Hierdie pogings word moontlik gemaak deur skenkings van omgeemense. Die onderwysers het die leerders organiseer en die personeel het goed bygestaan. Die leerders was baie tevrede met die voorsiening. 'n Groot Kerskaart is ook aan die span deur een van die senior dogters oorhandig. Die skoolhoof, Mnr. Sammy Banda, wat ook 'n nuwe omroeper by Radio Overberg is, tesame met sy personeel, is baie dankbaar vir hierdie daad van welwillendheid teenoor hierdie besonderse leerders, wat ook na aan hul harte is.

Foto: Lunette Coetzee So doen hierdie organisasie ook goeie werk onder die leerders van Mispah Skool. ‘Mispah’ is dan ook 'n Hebreeuse naam wat beteken “Die Here hou wag”. Vele kere per jaar voorsien ‘Meals on Wheels’ etes, asook nou 'n wonderlike Kersparty, ook met die uitdeel van geskenke aan die leerders.

Wel, hierdie jaar was dit anders as gevolg van die pandemie en inperking. Dit was dus die eerste keer in hiérdie jaar wat die span kon uitkom, en dan ook die kersparty kon hou, met net 'n ete, in lyn met die COVID-19 reëls. 'n Lekker groot pot kos met geelrys, beetslaai, koeldrank en roomys is aan die leerders en personeel voorgesit. Saloma Gous, die takbestuurder, tesame met haar span, Ingrid Wyngaard, Anette Jantjies, Lerato Nketu en Joseph Ramoths, het die etes voorberei en aangery.

Update on the coronavirus Premier Alan Winde On Monday 16 November, I had the opportunity to visit the Motus Technical Training Academy to see how their work readiness programme is helping to change the lives of young people in the province.
The programme takes young people who have just finished matric at technical schools and provides them with workplace readiness training, before placing them into three to four year apprenticeships in the motor industry.
The latest jobs data released last week shows that over 60% of South African youth are unemployed. One of the key focus areas of our recovery plan is saving jobs and creating the enabling environment to create new jobs. Equipping young people with skills that will help them find jobs or to start their own businesses when they qualify, will help us to achieve this goal. The COVID-19 lockdown has had a serious impact on many jobs, with the tourism and wine industries particularly hard hit. Minister Ivan Meyer and the Department of Agriculture in the province launched the Wine Tourism Worker Support Stipend. By reprioritizing R12 million of the Department’s budget, the stipend will enable support to 1333 wine tourism workers. These are wine and food service employees, who are employed in a winery tasting room in the Western Cape. The stipend of R3 000 will be allocated per person per month for three consecutive months – the peak tourism months of December 2020, and January and February 2021 – to mitigate projected job losses. Each winery may claim for a maximum of 10 employees to give as many wineries access to the fund as possible, and all wineries are able to apply on behalf of their existing, permanent employees. The aim of the fund is to protect the jobs of wine tourism workers by subsidising their salaries for a key quarter of the tourism calendar. Applications for the fund can be made through Vinpro. Photo: Western Cape Government During this time, the apprentices receive a monthly stipend, and are able to prepare to write their trade tests and become qualified artisans. The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism has provided funding to the programme because it is important that we develop a wide range of skills in the province. Having a strong pipeline of skills, which includes technical skills, makes us an attractive investment destination, while also making young people more employable.

The Golden Arrow Bus company is one of the businesses that has opened its doors to apprentices from the academy and I had the opportunity to meet some of them today. It was heartening to see how these young people are making full use of the opportunity and are thinking and planning for their futures. During my visit, I heard that apprentices from the Motus Academy receive Golden Arrow bus passes for the duration of their training, which ensures that they are able to get to work every day without having to use their stipend money for transport. I was also very pleased to see a number of young women enrolled in the programme, as many artisan careers, particularly those in the motor trade, have traditionally been male dominated.

Ministerial visit to Agri Dwala Press Release
Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, accompanied by Executive Mayor Sakkie Franken of the Overberg District Municipality and Mayor Paul Swart of the Cape Agulhas Municipality, recently visited grain farming enterprise, Agri Dwala (Pty) Ltd in Napier in the Overberg region.

Aside from the good harvest, current prices are also at levels higher than the past several seasons, which will boost economic growth in rural areas.” Minister Meyer concurs: “The Western Cape has seen many years of drought in recent years. We should view the good news in the context of farmers having had to deal with successive years of drought. The expected record harvest will assist the economic recovery of the Western Cape.” “Safety, jobs, dignity and wellbeing is the Western Cape Government's priority. Successful farming enterprises such as Agri Dwala enhances the realization of these goals,” concluded Minister Meyer.

The visit comes off the back of the good news that the Western Cape is expecting one of the largest winter grains and oilseed crop in recent history, shattering previous records. Commenting on the forecasted bumper year, Minister Meyer said: “The Western Cape Department of Agriculture expects a record grain harvest this season. We are grateful as this will increase the value of our agricultural production in the Western Cape as well as revenue from the grain industry.” Agri Dwala (Pty) Ltd is one hundred per cent owned and operated by farmworkers turned farmers. The enterprise owns 580 ha of farming land on which it farms with wheat, barley, oats, canola and lupines. Manager and shareholder, Daniel Pieters say that after a few tough years, they are excited by the prospect of a record yield. "We have been keeping a record of our harvest performance. All the indications are that we are going to have an exceptional year. Green turtle rescued near Witsand Jacques Louw On Friday the 13th of November, an endangered Green Turtle was found washed up near ‘Moodie se Put’ along the Witsand beach.
Interesting facts about the Green Turtle The green turtle is one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species. Green turtles are in fact named for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat, not their shells. In the Eastern Pacific, a group of green turtles that have darker shells are called black turtles by the local community. Green turtles are found mainly in tropical and subtropical waters. Like other sea turtles, they migrate long distances between feeding grounds and the beaches from where they hatched.
Classified as endangered, green turtles are mostly threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites. Scientific name: Chelonia mydas Weight: 150-400 pounds (68-181 kg) Length: 31-47 inches (78-119 cm)

Kim Osmond from the organisation HAT (Helping Animals Together) reported the find and assisted with the rescue. The turtle was collected on the beach by a conservator and was prepared for her trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town. Stephanie Grobler took her through to Heidelberg from where she was picked up for transport to Cape Town. A report from Two Oceans Aquarium was received later on the Friday night that she arrived safe and was checked in at the hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery and will keep you updated. Forever lost to theft Continued from page 16 the conservation- minded people living in that area – Mr I. Bruwer to mention but one – word got out that some iron and brass salvage individuals intended to visit the area at springlow-tide with the purpose of cutting up and removing all possible iron objects lying below the high water mark. Although the authorities were warned and protection was requested, the day nevertheless came. On the 8 th of February 2010, with 'SAHRA protection' and all, this Maritime Cultural Heritage Resource was 'cleaned out' and another of our openair museums was no more. This form of plunder unbelievably also struck the museum not many years after. During the timeframe, January 6th and January 21st, 2014, thieves targeted the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum's Arniston gold display. Tragically, they were able to walk off with almost the total gold exhibit, leaving only #3, #6 and the sword handle (#7). According to Interpol, museums and places of worship are usually of the most common targets. They went on to stress that these criminals spare no category of artefacts. Interpol did, however, go on to mention that, "archaeological pieces, antiquarian books, antique furniture, coins, weapons and firearms or ancient gold and silverware" appeared to top the list. As always, the museum bounced back from the setback by creating an equally impressive display. Along with the gold sword handle, gold snake earring and gold woven looking chain as a remembrance of the display that enchanted so many over the 30 odd years, another nine artefacts were added (see photo titled 'NEW DISPLAY').

History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Forever lost to theft Through collection, documentation, conservation, research and education programmes, museums ensure that they are dynamic and accountable public institutions, which shape and manifest the consciousness, identities and understanding of communities and individuals in relation to their natural, historical and cultural environments. The 1982 Arniston project provided the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum with such a unique collection – a first for a South African museum. In those years, conservation know-how and facilities were very limited in South Africa and thus as already stated, it was decided to leave the main features of the wreck undisturbed on the seabed and to remove only those artefacts that needed little or no conservation. In this way, the minimum would be lost. Of the 733 groups of artefacts recovered, most were kept together as a collection and donated to the Shipwreck Museum. However, not all items were donated. In a letter written in 2001, Professor Andrew Smith mentioned that Tubby Gericke, the leader of the expedition, recouped some of the cost by selling off a few of the more intrinsically valuable pieces.The collection was a composite one. Collectively, it covered all the ship fittings; stone, ceramics and glass;
weapons; personal items; jewellery and miscellaneous artefacts. To become the custodian of such a complete collection was a massive responsibility to say the least. Bravely, the museum gladly accepted. Over the now almost 30 years, the museum has kept a dynamic and regular changing Arniston display. Apart from the sample selection of artefacts on show – as over 700 items would always be too many to display at once – being altered regularly, the layout has also changed a number of times. It started as a multi-level-box showcase and is presently a sandand-rock-surface display. Over the years, the exhibit area has also moved location in the shipwreck hall. It was first located at the most south-eastern corner and is presently exhibited on the other side of the hall – north-eastern corner. The reason for its present location being that the artefact showcase has now joined the Arniston monument exhibition. ARNISTON GOLD ON EXHIBITION: For m any years the museum’s pride and joy was its Arniston gold exhibit (titled OLD DISPLAY on photo). It consisted of: (#1) (#2)

DISRESPECT FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE
It is clear that human values have changed over the last number of years, leaving us with, what appears to be, an ever declining regard for and appreciation of our cultural past. A recent example of this is the deplorable action of ISIS of destroying artefacts from the Assyrian Empire dating back to well over 2,000 years. The Overberg was not spared from such distasteful decline of respect towards our own priceless and irreplaceable symbols of the past. An example of the desecration of one of the Overberg’s many stunning "open-air museums" took place in 2010. For hundreds of years, a number of ancient anchors had been laying approximately 200 m from shore off the Northumberland Reef. Although 'well hidden by nature' for most of each month, all were nonetheless left totally exposed and high and dry once every two weeks during spring-low-tide at about 09h00. These durable artefacts stood the test of time and remained lying there undisturbed for hundreds of years. Over this period of survival, these artefacts must have been 'visited' by many a fisherman, combing Northumberland Point during the spring- low periods, in search of bait or the odd octopus. During the latter years, the author and others also frequently visited this, "open air museum" in the same manner as one would visit the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum. It had become a prominent part of the Maritime Cultural Heritage of the Overberg. On February 2010, and to the shock, dismay and horror of Continued on page 15 16
