Goeiedag en welkom by die 41ste uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Die boere is goed besig met die oes en ons paaie in en om die streek is sommer baie besiger. Desembermaand kom ook vining nader en die verkeer gaan binnekort ook nog besiger wees met die in-komende vakansieverkeer. Ons vra dus dat u versigtig bestuur. In hiérdie uitgawe berig ons oor die nuwe predikantspaar vir die N.G. Kerk op Riviersonderend, ons kuier heerlik in die kombuis met nog twee liplekker resepte en ons gaan bekyk die “Nurdle” probleem op ons strande so bietjie van nader. Jimmy Herbert kom deel vir ‘n interessante brokkie geskiedenis met ons oor die eerste Engelse hond wat sy opwagting hiér aan die Overbergse kus gemaak het in 1682. Dit dan op die agterblad… werklik ‘n baie interessante en unieke deeltjie van die Overbergse maritieme geskiedenis wat vertel word. Ons het weer ‘n berig oor nog nuwe huise wat in Bredasdorp oorhandig is en waar die nuwe munisipale bestuurder betrokke was en dan ook weer die kapperjolle van die tweemanskap Jakkals & Wolf op bladsy 13. Vir die eerste keer in ‘n lang tyd, het ons ook gaan inloer by die Bredasdorp Rolbalklub en ons skolenuusafdeling, begin ook so stadig maar seker besiger word.

On Friday, 6 November 2020 at the Mill Park housing handover, Pastor Michael Olivier started his short message to the beneficiaries with these words, “without God we are lost and without God we can do nothing. If we look at how fast the weather changed today, I want to say that it’s the right time for you to receive a house, no longer do you have to stay in those uncomfortable circumstances and perhaps worry about a leaking roof. Invite God into your homes and family lives.”

SKAAPSTERTJIES Bestandele: 30 skaapstertjies 3 heel naeltjies sout, peper en koljander na smaak 250 ml tamatiesous 100 ml chutney 100 ml Worcestersous 250 ml witwyn 1 ui (in ringetjies gesny) 60 ml suiker Metode: Sny die ui en pak onder in ‘n oondvaste bak. Plaas die stertjies bo-op en sout en peper. Meng die res van die bestanddele en gooi oor die stertjies. Bak teen 180 grade Celsius toe vir 30 minute. Maak dan oop en braai vir 60 minute of tot gaar. 2 pakke filodeeg 600 g neute van jou keuse 100 g Pistachio neute 250 ml botter gesmelt 30 ml fyn kaneel 7,5 ml neutmuskaat 2 suurlemoene se zest 1 lemoen se “zest” Meng al die bestanddele.
Stroop:
250 ml water 250 ml suiker 1 suurlemoen se sap 150 ml heuning 1 kaneelstokkie
Metode: Kook die stroop vir 10 minute en laat afkoel in die yskas. Smeer ‘n diep bak met botter. Plaas 8 lae filodeeg met gesmeerde botter tussenin op die bodem. Plaas ‘n dun lagie neutmengsel op die lae. Plaas nou 6 lae filodeeg met botter gesmeer op die neute. Nou weer ‘n lagie neute. Herhaal vir 5 keer en eindig met 8 lae filo. Smeer met botter. Sny dan met ‘n skerp mes in diamant vorms. Bak vir 40 minute teen 180 grade Celsius. As dit uit die oond kom, gooi die koue stroop oor.

Laerskool Bredasdorp se tennissterre presteer Drie van ons klein BD’s, Beate Uys, Minke Terblanche en Mieke Saayman het die verlede naweek aan die Boland tennistoernooi deelgeneem. Tydens hierdie toernooi kompeteer die drie streke van die Boland nl. Boland Platteland, Stellenbosch Wynland en die Paarl Drakenstein teen mekaar. Die Boland Plattelandstreek, bestaan op sy beurt weer uit 3 ander streke nl. Overberg, Weskus en Wynland, wat strek van Calvinia tot in Bredasdorp! Hoërskool Hermanus is 3de in Suid-Afrika met die ATKV Senior Afrikaanse Olimpiade Vier van Hoërskool Hermanus se senior leerders (Graad 10-12), het aan die einde van Augustus aan die ATKV Senior Afrikaanse Olimpiade deelgeneem. Veels geluk aan Danie Gouws (graad 12) wat ‘n derde plek lands- wyd verower het met 84%.

The World Wide Nurdle Problem Jacques Louw Like other plastics, nurdles can be mistaken for food by marine wildlife like seabirds, fish, and crustaceans. Once polluting our environment, they can pose a threat to these creatures and habitats for years to come. This is because the nurdles are tiny, persistent and potentially toxic. Due to their size, and often clear colour, nurdles can look like fish eggs or other small animals which makes them particularly attractive to seabirds, fish and other marine wildlife.

More than 220 marine species have been shown to ingest plastic debris. Plastic can get trapped in an animal's stomach causing ulceration, making them feel full and stopping them eating real food. This can lead to starvation and potentially death. Toxic chemicals can also transfer from microplastic to animals that eat them, causing further harm - another route for these chemicals to enter the food chain. Pellets might also have indirect effects on ecosystems; on the beach, microplastics can change the characteristics of sand, such as its temperature and permeability, which can affect animals like sea turtles that incubate their eggs on beaches.

During each stage of the industrial process, from pellet to product, nurdles are spilt. When not cleaned up properly they can enter our rivers and waterways, eventually reaching our oceans. With the global estimate being close to 230,000 tonnes of nurdles polluting our oceans every year. That’s billions and billions of nurdles.

By making simple, smart choices we can stay safe, protect our loved ones and ensure that we can enjoy this time, and support businesses. We must move forward - we cannot afford a second lockdown which would result in further job losses and deepen the economic and humanitarian crisis the country currently faces. By taking precautions, and acting responsibly, we can avoid further infections and the potential of a second lockdown. Wear a mask when you leave home, wash your hands regularly, and if you are feeling ill or experiencing any symptoms, stay at home.

This could be at any stage of the industrial process; from the production of nurdles, to their transport, to the manufacturers of plastic products and then again when goods are recycled back into nurdles.
Being indoors in closed spaces presents a higher risk for spreading of COVID-19. Where you must stay indoors, such as in office environments, ensure that doors and windows are open, keep your mask on and keep a safe distance from others. Elevators are small, confined spaces, so if they are full, take the stairs instead. Always wash or sanitise your hands after touching high-touch surfaces such as elevator buttons and escalator or stair rails. Continued on page 14
Some companies have taken steps to improve the waste management, screening techniques, transportation and handling of nurdles. Many others, mostly unwittingly, continue to pollute our marine environment with nurdles. There are lots of simple ways to stop pellets getting lost, but it’s a constant challenge to make sure all the pellets are contained. Even a tiny trickle of these pellets from any company can add up to a flood across the whole industry. Once at sea, or washed up on a beach, pellets are almost impossible to clean up. Therefore, we believe that the most effective solution is to tackle this problem at source, working with industry to stop the loss of pellets into the environment. Nurdles don’t need to become marine litter at all. In fact, there are simple measures that can prevent them escaping into the environment. So what does this now mean? Companies making, transporting and using pellets need to handle pellets with care. Simple steps to prevent spillage and leakage must be in place at all sites and facilities where nurdles are handled. These include preventing spills through improving procedures, providing spill kits and training staff on how to use them, and putting filters in drains. Faith Bogenhagen wen Showcase ‘20 Lunette Coetzee Faith Bogenhagen is 'n baie toegewyde en begeesterde atleet. Weens die beperkings op sportbyeenkomste in 2020, het geesdriftige sportmanne en vroue deur aanmoedigende rolspelers hul kant in die sportwêreld gebring. Deur aanmoedigende ouers Dennis en Karen Bogenhagen, is Faith geinspireer om hoog te vlieg en aanhou te hou wen. Maande van harde werk het gevolg en hulle moes fisieke en vaardigheidstoetsing deurstaan en deur aanmoedigende ouers en vriende is die moontlike eindelik moontlik gemaak.
Die laaste toetsing en Sportsamekoms het by die ETA Sportakademie in Rondebosch, Kaapstad plaasgevind. Faith het toe die Nasionale Titel na Bredasdorp gebring en dit was die meisies O/16 tot 18 jaar ‘Netbal Nasionale Showcase Series’. Vindingryke organiseerders het hiermee 'n kreatiewe manier ontwerp om jong sportliefhebbers die geleentheid te bied om hul fiksheid en vaardighede op te skerp. Die deelnemers het aanlyn ingeskryf. Hul moes 'n reeks voorgeskrewe oefeninge doen en aan die finale oefenkamp op 30 Oktober met 70 ander skole nasionaal gaan deelneem.Die laaste was die ‘Bronco’-toets wat hulle moes slaag. Die top drie presteerders het pryse en medaljes gewen. Die deelname sertifi-kaat wat ontvang was, is deur rugbylegendes, Bob Skinstad en Robbie Fleck onderteken. Hierdie deelname het bewys dat ‘n mens kan wen, al is omstandighede teen jou. Mag hiérdie 'n les vir vele van ons wees… dat mens selfs in ‘n ongunstige klimaat en onder uitdagende omstandighede die hoogste sport in die lewe kan bereik. Sowaar, aanhouer wen. Dit is met trots dat ons die wenners en deelnemers salueer. Mag daar nog vele wenners uit die Overberg na vore tree.

Foto: Verskaf Dennis Bogenhagen (self 'n Karatekampioen en omroeper by Radio Overberg), haal sy hoed af vir al die atlete wat deelgeneeem het met groot deursettingvermoë en entoesiasme. Daar word groot waardering uitgespreek vir die netbalafrigter van Hoërskool Bredasdorp, juffrou Odendaal, wat vir Faith aangemoedig het om deel te neem. In die Bogenhagen-huis is Faith al soggens om 5-uur deur pa afgerig en na 10 weke kon sy na die finale uitdunningsrondte deurdring. Update on the coronavirus Continued from page 10 Avoid any queues wherever possible. In instances where you must queue, ensure that you are keeping a distance of 1.5 metres. Make use of hand sanitisers available at the entrances of shops and businesses, and disinfectant wipes for trolleys and baskets. If you are entertaining guests at home, keep the gathering small and try to keep it outdoors. If you are serving food, have one person dish up for everyone. We encourage people to go out and support businesses, but to do so in a responsible manner that keeps everyone safe. Open air events are safest, so, consider outdoor opportunities to socialise and see friends and family. Consider the size of the venue - if you cannot maintain a 1.5 metre distance, then consider going somewhere else. If someone stands too close to you, ask them politely to step back. Ensure the venue is well ventilated and has its windows open. If not, ask them to open the windows. If you are eating out, and the option is available ask to be seated outside. Always wear your mask in public and when you aren’t eating or drinking anything. Drink responsibly and do not share drinks, cigarettes, or cutlery. If a venue asks you to fill out an attendance register, please use the correct information and write clearly. This makes it easier to contact you, should we need to do so.

The international news of a potential vaccine is very positive as it represents a breakthrough in the fight against COVID19. However, we must carefully manage our expectations with regards to a vaccine. This particular vaccine which has been shown to be 90% effective so far, also requires stringent cold chain management and storage, the likes of which are not widely available around the world. Any new vaccine must pass all the relevant international safety standards before being made available for public use. With global demand for a vaccine being high, it would also take some time to produce sufficient dosages and would need to be fairly allocated and distributed. We are grateful for the work being done on vaccines by scientists around the world, and for all those currently taking part in vaccine trials. This latest news is a sure sign that we are moving towards a significant breakthrough- however- until a vaccine is widely available, our strongest defense against COVID-19 is our own behaviour towards the virus. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

THE MUSEUM’S SHIP’S GRINDING STONES Continued from page 16 This artefact was found also lying 12 m from the main ballast pile of the wreck. This indicates that it was washed off the ship to that position. Its description is “White grind stone with different kinds of patterns on it, looks like small sea shells printed on it. The hole is an square with and round stone in the middle and it’s loose.” Its size is recorded as having a 50 cm diameter with a width of 10 cm.
The Dutch stone recovered from the Willem de Zwyger is slightly smaller with a 43 cm diameter and a width of 7 cm. The Willem de Zwyger came to grief off Skipskop near the De Hoop reserve. She was rediscovered in modern times by Tubby Gerieke, Brian Clark and Peter Leube and a cargo of brass cannons, brass mortars as well as her full load of tin blocks, were recovered. The fifth very significant grinding wheel stone, also provided on loan by J. Herbert, was the off the Borderer that sank in deep water off Struis Point in 1868. This stone with a diameter of 36.5 cm and a width of 8 cm is described as, “Round cement-like block, with brown and white colours right around the grinding stone. With marks that looks like it was scratch. The hole in the middle also appears to be a square shape. When you place your finger in the hole it feels like dry mud and when you look at your finger it’s an orange, brownish colour.”

History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert THE MUSEUM’S SHIP’S GRINDING STONES The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is fortunate enough to be in possession of a number of collections of specific artefacts recovered from diverse shipwrecks. Such collections enable the keen student to compere and study items from different nationalities, different types of vessels, and of different ages. To mention but a few of such inter-comparison displays at the Museum, there are collections of: Coins, Portholes, Bricks, Cannon, Porcelain sherds and Grinding stones.
Next to the wheel, a large copper flange was recovered, believed to be part of the original contraption. Recently this item, rarely seen in museum’s, was brought out from storage and placed with the others as part of an educational display of British, French, Dutch and Danish grinding stone. The museum’s next entry to this grinding stone collection was a French one provided on loan from J. Herbert. This large diameter grinding wheel is believed to have come from the Le Centaure a homeward bound FRENCH EAST INDIAMAN from Mauritius to France.
Due to their ability to survive the underwater elements, grinding wheels are commonly found on shipwrecks. The museum’s first ship’s grinding stone taken into custody was recorded in 1982 as part of the 700 odd Arniston-collection items donated to them by Seabed Enterprises. In the collection there were two pieces of stone that were of particular interest. One was a small piece of worked slate – similar to a whetstone – found in the stern of the ship (1E 01116). This stone was used to finish a highly polished knife-edge with razor sharpness. The other stone recovered was a grindstone or wheel that would have also been used to sharpen knives, swords and bayonets. This artefact was found in the bow section of the Arniston lost in 1815. This grinding wheel had a diameter of 40 cm and width of 15 cm. In the middle, the axle hole was square with 5.5 cm sides.
On the 19th January, 1750 this ship hit the outer reefs off DIE WALLE (today 9,3km west of L'Agulhas Lighthouse and 1km off shore) and broke up very quickly. Many years ago this relatively thin (6.5cm) stone with a 64 cm diameter was found lying in a depth of 6m and about 18m shoreward of the main wreck site. The stone circa 1750 stone is by far the biggest in the collection and is described as having dry sea weed on it, being larger than normal and having a hole in the middle and closed with a stone carroded permanently inside the hole.

The next two significant grinding stones, both belonging to J. Herbert and provided on loan to the museum, are of Danish and Dutch origin. The Danish stone came from the site where the Danish East Indiaman Nicobar met its end off Quoin Point in 1783. Continued on page 15 overdeberg2020@gmail.com
