Goeiedag en baie welkom by nog ‘n pragtige uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Nog steeds is dit ‘n absolute plesier om hierdie unieke en ook positiewe publikasie aan julle te bring op ‘n weeklikse basis. Sonder my span, is dit ook nie moontlik om elke week die OVERdeBERG aan julle te bring nie en hulle onderskeie bydraes is van onskatbare waarde.

In hierdie week se uitgawe berig ons oor gestremdes en die Nasionale Maand vir die Bewusmaking van Gestremdes se Regte. Dit is ‘n projek deur die Nasionale Regering wat vanaf die 3de November tot die 3de Desember aangebied word. Ons gaan loer ook in by Madelé Burger (oftewel Toortsie) met die publisering van haar splinternuwe boek, daar is weer ‘n liplekker kuier in die kombuis met twee heerlike resepte en ons gaan kuier by van ons skole om te sien wat gebeur waar. Daar is ook ‘n besoek aan die Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA om op datum te kom met hulle doen en late. In hierdie uitgawe, sowel as volgende week se uitgawe 40, publiseer ons pragtige matriekafskeidfoto’s en dan is daar natuurlik ook ‘n opvolg oor die “Her Dignity Matters” projek van die VLV op Bredasdorp, in samewerking met die Pavilion Mall, wat vroeër die week tot uitvoering gebring is. Verlede week het ons vir oom Kaspaas op bladsy 13 gegroet en dié week, verwelkom ons vir Jakkals & Wolf. Dit is ‘n 2de stel van T.O. Honiball se sketse. Jimmy Herbert skryf ook weer hierdie week vir ons oor nog interessanthede van die maritieme geskiedenis van die Overberg. So gepraat van Jimmy Herbert… die res van ons span… Letty-Ann Möller, Lunette Coetzee en Pierre Vlok… baie dankie! Tot volgende week! Geniet die naweek. Bestuur asseblief baie versigtig, veral nou met die vakansiegangers wat so stadig maar seker deel word van ons verkeerspatroon hier in die Kaap Agulhas munisipale area. Disability Rights Awareness Month Jacques Louw South Africa commemorates National Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between 3 November and 3 December. 3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and it is also commemorated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day.

Splinternuwe boek vir Toortsie Letty-Ann Möller Donderdag 22 Oktober 2020 was 'n holderstebolderdag vir die Overbergse skrywer en fynproewer, Madelé Burger.

The following sub-themes are intended to focus conversations on priority areas identified by the disability sector, which also link to the seven priorities of government: Week 1: Children and also young people with disabilities empowered to chart their own destiny through access to quality lifelong learning. Week 2: A well built environment accessible to all persons with disabilities. Week 3: Persons with disabilities as equal players in building inclusive economies. Week 4: Children and women with disabilities - feeling and being safe as equal citizens in their communities. Disability is the consequence of an impairment that may also be then physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental, or some combination of these. A disability may be present from birth, or occur during a person's lifetime. Nie alleen was die kosfotograaf besig om foto's vir haar derde banting resepteboek, "Toortsie 3,is dit nie?" af te neem nie, maar die koerier het ook met die eerste besending van haar Nanowrimo-produk "My Kinderjare mbt Vandag" daar by die huis aangekom. Nanowrimo is 'n internasionale skrywersuitdaging wat in Novembermaande gratis op internet beskikbaar is. (Daar is dan ook ruimte vir skenkings om skryf te ontwikkel). Jy teken aan op Nanowrimo.org en kry 30 dae om 50 000 woorde te skryf. Dis ongeveer 2000 woorde per dag. Die rekenaarskerm begroet jou met "You need 1667 words today" en jy moet net deurdruk en skryf want, soos Madelé sê, ‘jy wil darem nie jou vlag laat sak nie.’ Baie skrywers gebruik dan ook November om hulle boeke te begin skryf. In Maart, met grendeltyd, het Madelé saans haar Nanowrimo-uitdaging verfyn. Dora-Marié van Vuuren het dit geredigeer en die eindproduk het 67000 woorde gehad. Madelé het self gereël dat dit gedruk word. Waar het hierdie skrywer se liefde vir skryf begin? Sy het haar eie gebede begin neerskryf sodat sy gefokus kan bid! 'n Verdere aansporing was ook een van haar dosente se opmerking, ‘Baie dankie vir die keurige taalgebruik’. Hier is nou 'n geleentheid vir elkeen om 'n boek te skryf. Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw

KERRIERYSFRIKKADELLE Bestandele:

SOETSUUR BLOMKOOLKERRIE Bestandele: 1 kg skaapskenkels 1 ui 30 ml olie 5 aartappels halwe blomkool (opgebreek) 1 blikkie tamatiepuree 60 ml Worcestersous 60 ml asyn 500 ml aftreksel 4 heel naeltjies 80 ml kerriepoeier 20 ml borrie 30 ml komyn 80 ml appelkooskonfyt sout en peper (na smaak) Metode: Sny die al die uie in ringetjies en braai dan in die olie. Braai die komyn ook saam met die uie. Braai die vleis bietjie bruin. Meng die res van die bestanddele (behalwe die blomkool) en gooi by die vleis. Laat stadig prut totdat die vleis sag is. Gooi die blomkoolstukke by en laat dit lekker deurkook. Resepte & foto’s: met erkenning aan Marinda Kook

100ml olie 800g maalvleis of worsvleis 1 eier (geklits) 30 ml appelkooskonfyt 60 ml chutney 30 ml matige kerriepoeier 10 ml borrie 1 ui (fyn gekap) 5 ml sout 250 ml gaar rys

Metode: Stel die oond op 180ºC. Meng alles saam en rol in balletjies. Sit dit dan op ‘n gesmeerde bakplaat. Gooi die olie in ‘n bakplaat of ‘n pan en plaas die frikkadelle in die olie. Bak oop vir 15 minute. Draai die frikkadelle om en bak vir nog 15 minute tot bruin. Jy kan ‘n kerriesous maak en dit in die sous ook bak. Hier volg die bestandele vir die sous wat hiérbo genoem word: 1 blikkie tamatie en uiesmoor 5ml suiker 5ml asyn 125 ml water 15 ml kerriepoeier 5ml borrie sout en peper na smaak

Metode: Meng alles saam en gooi oor frikkadellebak. Bak in die oond.

Skolenuus uit ons streek

Foto: HSB/Facebook Leerders van die Hoërskool Bredasdorp het verlede Dinsdag die 20ste Oktober ‘n “Shadow” aand gehad by die Wyoming Spur op Bredasdorp. So ‘n aand is nogal interessant en groot pret, want die leerders neem die take oor van die personeel (al is dit dan ook onder ‘n wakende oog) vir een aand en beweeg dan saam met die personeel van die Spur om die take te verrig wat ook gewoonlik deur die kelners (hoofsaaklik) verig word. ‘n Gedeelte van die aand se inkomste word dan ook aan die skool geskenk as deel van fondsinsameling. Op hierdie aand is fondse ingesamel vir HSB Krieket.

Foto: HSB/Facebook Die BD's het verlede Donderdag hulle hoof se verjaarsdag met 'n heerlike piekniek gevier. Nie net het die Matriekraad van 2021 mnr. Retief met 'n pragtige koek bederf nie, maar hulle het hul liefde en respek vir hul hoof geïllustreer deur almal soos mnr. Retief aan te trek. Hul tema was “Die Blok”. Mnr. Retief se verjaardag is eintlik Saterdag die 31ste Oktober.

en omliggende dorpe bewus van die stryd wat kanker lyers het, en hoe noodsaaklik die ondersteuning is. Cansa bied wonderlike ondersteuning aan families,en Carmen moedig mense aan om Cansa te kontak en van hierdie onbaatsugtige hulp te ontvang.

I was diagnosed with Sarcoma in my leg, at the age of 14, 24 years ago. Still a teenager and not knowing what to expect, I had to battle with this illness. With God being my foundation and my faith stronger than ever, my motto was… I have Cancer, Cancer doesn't have me. Staying in the hospital, fighting this Cancer, as I journeyed through the various psychological trauma and tests, that comes when one is diagnosed with Cancer, my family and I were not prepared for what lay ahead. It was CANSA that came to the aid of my family and I through their support with motivation, encouragement and education. This greatly assisted not only me but my family in dealing with the emotionally of what I and they were going through. The news of hearing that I was Cancer free after my treatment is a sound that still echo's in my ear today. This has motivated me to cherish, appreciate and to live life to the fullest. It is for this reason that I am actively involved in the Cancer Relay For Life in my community as a survivor and also currently chairperson. To everyone out there please get involved we as Cancer patients need you in fighting this disease.

Foto: Lunette Coetzee Jaarliks is daar 'n deurnagprogram propvol aktiwiteite, gewoonlik die laaste Saterdag in November van 18:00 tot die Sondagoggend 06:00. Dit is verbasend hoe vol lewe hierdie deurnag is, elke span moet met elke rondte voete op die baan het. Mense kan versnaperinge koop en hul eie etes bring. Die glaskasteel is 'n ware ligdraer op hierdie aand. Elke jaar is Radio Overberg aan die stuur met die uitsaaiwerk en Deon Arends sorg dat die spanne op en wakker bly met aangename musiek, verskeie kompeterende aktiwiteite en wonderlike pryse. Spanne skryf in en samel ook geld in. Die span met die meeste fondse ingesamel, word as wenners aangewys. Daar is ook pryse vir die vlag, spangees en samewerking. Die hoogtepunt vir elke persoon is die ‘Luminaria’ seremonie, wanneer 'n geleentheid geskep word om by kerslig om die geliefde se ‘Luminaria’ sakkie in stille bepeinsing met hartroerende musiek te bepeins. 'n Stille traan ter afskeid en oordenking word dikwels gestort. Hierdie jaar gaan dinge anders lyk weens die inperkingsregulasies. Daar is 'n moontliikheid dat die Cansa Relay vir Februarie 2021 beplan sal word.

Carmen Rene Pedro Jagers,is 'n sprankelende persoonlikheid, met 'n pragtige gesindheid. Sy is gelukkig getroud met Denver Jagers. Omdat sy as tiener alreeds met die donker sy van die lewe kennis gemaak het, het sy net een doel voor oë, en dit is om mense se lewens te verryk en ondersteuning te bied. Sy is nou al vir vele jare ook verbonde as voorsitster van Cansa Relay Suid Afrika in die Overberg. Sy dra sorg dat Cansa Relay op goed ge-oliede wiele funksioneer met haar komitee. Carmen het ook al die Overberg op ‘n nasionale vlak in Gauteng gaan verteenwoordig. Reg deur die jaar samel sy en haar komitee fondse in en maak die gemeenskap van Kaap Agulhas 6

Another visit to the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA Jacques Louw The Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA are the custodians of the natural landscapes that are invaluable in terms of biodiversity, right here at Africa’s southernmost tip. This Special Management Area is found on the Agulhas Plain, in the Overberg region of our Western Cape province. They are doing phenomenal work in taking private land, bordering on the Agulhas National Park, and committed it to conservation, farming sustainably, while fighting climate change and therefor benefiting all who live here. This also includes the culturally-rich town of Elim. Their vision includes the creation of a real sustainable ecology, which ensures the protection of the Nuwejaars Wetland Ecosystem, which enhances the heritage and culture of the subregion, generating benefit for all stakeholders, helping to meet social and environmental requirements, and to also encourage community lifestyles compatible with environmental sustainability. So far, the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA has achieved the following in a relatively short amount of time:

 They’ve fenced out agricultural areas - and are working to

connect their conservation areas, to allow game and vegetation to move within these ‘corridors’.  They’ve cleared thousands of hectares of land of invasive alien trees, in turn creating jobs for many Agulhas Plain residents. Clearing is focused on their wetlands, and they use some of the chipped plant material here.  Indigenous trees were planted along riverbanks, to also prevent alien re-growth.  The making and controlling of ecological fires help regen– erate old fynbos lands.  Game that became extinct on the Agulhas Plain in previous centuries have also now been reintroduced. Buffalo, hippo (both last seen here between 150 and 200 years ago) and hartebeest now roam the land within the Special Management Area (SMA). Eland, ‘Quagga’ and Bontebok were also released on the Nuwejaars land.  They’ve got a conservation team who monitor the game and vegetation, and who connect with universities in vital research projects. Truly an amazing job done by the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA to conserve our area here at the southern tip of Africa, so that future generations will have the opportunity to experience this area in all its natural beauty. Ons het verlede week berig oor die “Her Dignity Matter” projek wat deur die Pavilion Mall in Bredasdorp, in samewerking met die Bredasdorp VLV geloods is. Die doel van die projek was om sanitêre produkte vir jong meisies in ons omgewing in te samel en dan te skenk aan twee van die hoërskole hiér in Bredasdorp. Die VLV was ook verantwoordelik vir die verspreiding van die produkte aan Hoërskool Bredasdorp en Albert Myburgh Senior Sekondêr.

Skolenuus Matriekafskeid 2020

Dit is weer daardie tyd van die jaar waar matriekafskeidfunksies dwaarsoor die Overberg gehou word. Pragtige pakke, swierige rokke en interessante vervoermiddels… alles deel van hiérdie jaarlikse tradisie.

Karla Richter en haar klasmaat Denver Palmer is van die Hoërskool Bredasdorp. Carla is van Elim. Sy is 'n mooi, opgetoë jong dame en baie voorbeeldig in die gemeenskap. ‘Tuindag’ samel fondse in vir die AACL Letty-Ann Möller Op Saterdag 24 Oktober, het ‘n groot aantal mense opgedaag by Soetmuisberg Kafee om deel te neem aan ‘n ‘Tuindag’ om fondse in te samel vir die Bredasdorp-tak van die AACL. Heelwat tuine is besoek en ligte verversings is bedien. Die weer het mooi saamgespeel en dit was ‘n pragtige en suksesvolle middag.

A Tale Of Two Bells Continued from page 16 reportedly came from the Queen of the Thames. It too was dated 1870. Apparently, after being cracked, this smaller brass bell found its way to Cape Town where, unknown to Overbergers, a Mr. Emms, collector extraordinaire, became the new owner. This Queen of the Thames bell w as then proudly added to his bell collection. Remarkably, by the age of 87, Mr. Emms owned no less than 200 different Africana collections. With his passing, these collections were put on auction, and promptly, all items found a new home, leaving Prof. de Wet and us wondering about the whereabouts of the bell. Turner and Klee: Then on the 20th of April 2020, the very well-known maritime author Malcolm Turner, sent this author some photographs advising that Mike Klee (dive-shop owner in Port Elizabeth) had purchased the late Mervyn's bell in Johannesburg.

The bell appeared to be shining and in good condition with a small crack visible. It was indeed the 'missing bell' who now had a new collector-owner and was thankfully heading back, closer to home. Bell story completed: Both historical and archaeological research revolves around detective work - finding and putting the relevant puzzle pieces together. This author was fortunate enough to not only have thorough research about the wreck in question, but also to be friends with all the role players. The volumes of maritime research, Jef and Tertius, Harry and Diekie, Malcolm and Mike, as well as Ora Laubscher, each had parts of the puzzle. Once put together, the full story revealed itself. This left us with (1) a ship's exposed resting place where, no doubt, many storms tormented it over 149 years (1871-2020). Yet, the once majestic Queen of the Thames (1871) still has a portion standing (2020) and clearly visible above water - seen from land and even space satellites (34° 36' 44.33" S and 20° 20' 10.59" E). (2) Numerous of her artefacts that are on display at the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum. (3) The fact that she had two bells is now proven. (4) Their present whereabouts known and recorded – one went straight to Bredasdorp and never left home, while the other smaller bell toured the country from south to north and then back down to Port Elizabeth.

A Tale Of Two Bells To the archaeologist and diver, a ship's bell is a prized possession as it is often the only means of positively identifying a shipwreck. Ship's bells have been in use for centuries with the earliest such bell recovered dated 1498. The ship's name is traditionally engraved or cast onto the surface of the bell. Often also with the year of launch.

In the mid-1800s, this author's Richardson forefather also built one of Mrs. Gray's designed churches on his beautiful farm, Schonberg, situated in the Langkloof 45km east of the city George. Although the Bredasdorp All Saints Church's foundation stone was laid in 1859, the church was only consecrated in 1863 and acquired her bell (ship's bell of the Queen of the Thames) in 1871.

The town of Riviersonderend was the recipient of the second bell of the Queen of the Thames that was salvaged from the stern area. There it remained in use for many years. The bell's service to the church was unfortunately ended when it came loose from its mountings, fell and cracked. This prize artefact was sadly, but necessarily replaced to continue calling worshipers to church.

A sketch made in 1871 at Ryspunt. In the 'A Tale Of Two Bells' story, the ship in question was the Queen of the Thames launched in 1870. The ship: Capitalising on the latest developments in steamship technology, Devitt and Moore launched the Queen of the Thames on the Clyde on 11 August 1870. Rated as one of the finest ships in the world at that time to this day, she is the classiest ship ever to be lost on our Overberg coastline. A registered boat of a whopping 2607 tonnes gross, she boasted three decks, the same number of masts and powerful engines. The Queen of the Thames had both engines and sails (see the picture) and was recorded to be able to travel at the rate of 13 or 14 knots per hour - a true marvel of its time! Within a month from the date of her departure from Melbourne, Australia, she struck the ground on Saturday 18 March at exactly 01h20. As the weather was good and the sea calm, with first light all the passengers and crew were safely landed. Two bells on a ship: A fact not known to many is that in later years (1800â€™s onward) numerous ships had two bells. The larger official bell on deck engraved with the ship's name was mounted on the forecastle and usually, a smaller one in the pilothouse. New home for each bell: The Queen of the Thames too had two bells - one larger than the other (height: circa 27cm vs 17cm). As both bells were hanging on deck, they were easily salvaged. Soon each bell found a home. The larger bell from the ship's forecastle went 'directly' to the All Saints Church in Bredasdorp. This beautiful church, built with orange stones, strongly suggests the influence of Sophy Gray. As the wife of the first Bishop of Cape Town, Mrs. Gray was accredited with drawing up plans for many of the Anglican churches found in the Cape. 16

Disappears from memory: Like most things, over time the conscious existence of the origin of the bell faded from local memory. Where they were once the bells from the Queen of the Thames, both became just bells, doing what they did best - chiming their merry toll to draw and guide worshipers. Bell research: Relatively recently two mathematicians, Professors Jef Teugels (Belgium) and Tertius de Wet (Stellenbosch), became involved in the hobby of discovering, recording and studying brass bells. On a scouring drive through the town of Bredasdorp, they found, perched above the Methodist Church, what looked like a ship's bell. Unfortunately, only one side of the brass bell was visible from ground level. This one sided view limited them to only identify half of the bell's (ship's) name, 'THE THAMES', and below what looked like a 70 (last two numbers of the date of manufacture of the bell). After consulting with this author, all agreed that it might come from the Queen of the Thames, 1870. At the same time the knowledgeable Mrs. Ora Laubscher, who knew about a Queen of the Thames' bell that had been at Riviersonderend, w hile totally unaware of the fact that some ships had two bells, was logically convinced that the All Saints Church bell came from the Maid of the Thames.

Proof: A well-known local Bredasdorper, Harry Huysers, and his brother Diekie, then tackled this identification problem with the use of a drone. Close-up north and south aerial photographs were taken showing 'QUEEN OF' (with number 18) and the other 'THE THAMES' (with number 70). So, the bell's origin was revealed!
