Redaksioneel Vrydag 11 September 2020 Goeiedag en welkom by uitgawe 32 van OVERdeBERG. Ons is al amper twee weke in die lentemaand in en oral om ons lyk die Overberg absoluut asemrowend mooi. Die afwagting vir ‘n goeie oes is amper nou tasbaar en oral waar jy heengaan is dit die positiwiteit wat seevier oor die negatiwiteit. Met elke uitgawe van OVERdeBERG raak ek net meer en meer trots op hiérdie publikasie en my medewerkers. Dit is Lunette Coetzee, Letty-Ann Möller, Pierre Vlok en dan ook Jimmy Herbert, wat week na week sorg vir die pragtige en interessante artikels. Moet natuurlik ook nie vergeet van die plaaslike nuus wat ook nog ingesamel word nie! Alhoewel nie al die medewerkers elke week ‘n berig, artikel of nuusberig lewer nie, is en bly dit ‘n spanpoging en is ek verskriklik trots op my span.

Hiérdie week se uitgawe is weer propvol en ek moes selfs nog twee ekstra bladsye byvoeg om alles gedek te kry! Daar is ietsie oor Toerismemaand (wat juis nou is gedurende September) en ons kuier weer lekker in die kombuis met twee liplekker resepte. September is ook Alzheimersmaand en ons berig breedvoerig daaroor. Jy kan lees van die nuwe veldgids oor die Overbergse Renosterveld, wat onlangs vrygestel is en daar is ‘n storie oor ‘n amperse plaaslike digter wat groot naam maak. Dis egter nie al nie en daar is nog baie meer interessanthede vir julle om te lees en geniet. Alles wat mooi is vir die naweek en sterkte vir die nuwe week wat voorlê. Bly veilig en gesond, dan gesels ons volgende week weer.

September is Tourism Month
Tourism Month is celebrated annually in September, and provides a heightened month-long focus on the importance of the sector to the South African economy. Tourism Month features themed activities that are aligned to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day Celebrations that take place annually on 27 September. The 2020 theme is 'Tourism and Rural Development'.

Upon researching the definition of Rural Tourism a number of definitions emerged but there was a common thread that defined rural tourism as the movement of people from their normal places of residence to a rural area for a minimum period of 24 hours and upward, for the sole purposes of leisure and pleasure. The 2019 UNWTO theme for World Tourism Day is Tourism and jobs – a better future for all, which highlights the tourism sector’s vast capability to create jobs and therefore reduce the country’s unemployment rate. South Africa has adapted the UNWTO theme, and remain confident that tourism will contribute to our country turning to positive economic growth desired by our government and also contribute to more jobs to its maximum potential. Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw
HAM & MOSTERT BROODGEBAK Bestandele: 10 mediumsnye witbrood 40 g botter (saggemaak) 1 eetlepel mosterd (volgraan) 150 g gesnyde ham 275 ml volroommelk 275 ml dubbeldik room 4 medium eiers 50 g beleë cheddarkaas (gerasper) Metode: Plaas vyf snye brood op ’n kapbord. Smeer dit met botter en mosterd. Verdeel die ham vervolgens tussen die snye brood en voltooi met nog’n sny brood bo-op elke stapeltjie.
HOENDERBOBOTIE Bestandele: 1 hoender, gekook en ontbeen 50 ml sultanas 2 uie (fyn gekap) 250 ml mayonnaise 20 ml fyn appelkoos konfyt 10 ml suurlemoensap 1 pakkie hoenderroomsop 15 - 20 ml kerriepoeier 250 ml melk 3 ml gemengde kruie 2 eiers (geklits) sout en peper na smaak
Sny die toebroodjies diagonaal in kwarte deur. Rangskik die driehoeke in ’n oondvaste bak van 23 cm x 23 cm x 7,5cm. Gooi die melk, room, eiers en genoeg geurmiddels in ’n groot beker en meng goed. Giet die eiermengsel eweredig oor die brood en druk die brood effe platter. Indien jy tyd het, laat dit vir 15 minute in die yskas staan, andersins kan jy voortgaan. Voorverhit die oond tot 180°C. Strooi die kaas oor en geur met varsgemaalde swartpeper. Bak vir 30 tot 35 minute of tot die eiermengsel begin STOL. Bedien dadelik met ’n vars groenslaai.
Metode: Voorverhit oond tot 180 grade. Meng die hoender, sultanas en die uie. Gooi dit in 'n oondvastebak. Meng die oorblywende bestanddele, behalwe die eiers, saam en gooi dit oor die hoender mengsel. Meng alles lig saam met n vurk. Daarna die eiers. Bak dit vir 40 tot 45 minute lank. World Alzheimer's Month World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. World Alzheimer's Month was launched in 2012. World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year. 2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem that requires global action.

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It knows no social, economic, ethnic or geographical boundaries. There is currently no cure. We must remember that this disease affects not only the person with dementia, but everyone around that person. Caregivers, family members and friends can all be deeply upset by the progression of dementia in someone they care about. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is a collective name for conditions in which progressive degeneration of the brain affects memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. While the risk of developing dementia increases dramatically with age, most older people do not develop the condition. It is not an inevitable consequence of getting older. It ensures the preservation of the Bontebok and also forms part of the Cape Floristic region which is a world heritage area. Witsand is a small coastal town situated at the mouth of the Breede River with good fishing and widely considered to be a whale nursery of South Africa. A day trip to Witsands will be memorable. Also in close proximity is the De Hoop Nature Reserve which is a very popular destination. Whale watching is a must between July and November from either of these mentioned places. The new ferry in Malagas, very close to us, has replaced the old pont, which takes people and livestock across the river and takes travelers to Witsand and Heidelberg from Malagas. Opgradering van Bredasdorp Rioolwerke Jacques Louw Op die 4de September het mnr. Paul Swart (Uitvoerende Burgermeester), Onder-Burgermeester Zukiswa Tonisi en die verskillende portfoliohoofde, besoek afgelê op die terrein waar die opgraderingswerk aan die Bredasdorp Rioolwerke tans gedoen word.

Hiérdie projek is in Maart vanjaar van stapel gestuur en die afhandeling daarvan is geskeduleer vir Junie 2021. Vanaf Bredasdorp sal die opgraderingswerk oorskuif na die rioolwerke op Napier, wat vir volgende jaar geskeduleer is. “Ons mikpunt is om ‘n uitstekende diens te verskaf aan die inwoners van Kaap Agulhus.” Dit dan die woorde van mnr. Paul Swart in sy hoedanigheid as die Uitvoerende Burgermeester van Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit. 10

Die digter... Samuel Theron Lunette Coetzee Sameul Theron, ‘n splinternuwe skrywer, vind inspirasie deur mense en die natuur. Hy het ‘n baie aangename persoonlikheid en hy het ‘n ryk verbeelding en baie insig. Sedert 2018 het hy hom voltyds aan skryf toegewei. Hy het al baie inderhoude op die luggolwe gevoer, is voorwaar enig in sy soort en ‘n baanbreker.

Samuel is gebore in Distik 6 en het as sesjarige in Worcester gaan woon, waar hy beide sy laerskool- en hoërskoolloopbaan deurloop het. Hy het tydens die Kersvakansie van 2018 sy eerste gedig vir sy bundel geskryf, nadat hy en sy vrou teruggekeer het vanaf hul padloop tussen Elim en Bredasdorp. As geskenk het hy ‘n nuwe paar hardloopskoene gekry wat hy wou uittoets.

Samuel stel baie belang in mense en dit is aangenaam om in sy geselskap te sit. ‘Vir My Ma’ is sy eerste digbundel. Sy toevlug nog altyd in woorde en oor die jare het hy altyd geskryf, maar dit is eers onlangs in 2018, dat hy voltyds begin het om pen op papier sit. Sy gedigte vertel van sy lewe, sy kinderdae en sy perspektief oor die wêreld. Samuel is getroud met Phillipine Hans wie gebore was op Elim en dan grootgeword het op die nabuoverdeberg2020@gmail.com
Samuel het ook ‘n gedig geskryf rondom sy ervaring van ‘n nuwejaar op Kassiesbaai. Al die gedigte in hierdie digbundel was genotuleer in ‘n blou notaboekie. Wanneer sy oorlede skoonma hom met die blou boekie sien, wou sy by Phillipine weet wat hy in daai boekie skryf. Hy het ook met twaalf ander skrywers bedraes gelewer vir ‘n antologie genaamd “Cape Sounds” wat geskryf is deur Gavin Joachims. Samuel het sy digbundel en ‘Cape Sounds’ geskenk aan Elim Biblioteek en Elim Morawiese Laerskool, as deel van sy gemeenskapswerk. Ons wens hom alle sterkte toe met sy loopbaan as skrywer en hoop dat daar nog vele boeke en bundels uit sy pen gaan verskyn. Op bladsy 12 deel ons sy gedig ‘Drafstap’ met julle. 11

Axios Vaardigheidskool het op Dinsdag 8 September 'n welwillendheid besoek afgelê by Mispah Skool op Elim. Axios is die skool in Eersterivier waar die telenovela ‘Arendsvlei’ verfilm word. Ekself was op die bestuur van Axios voor ek in Oktober 2019 prinsipaal van Mispah Skool geraak het.
Die omgewing is asemrowend, Drafstap vir die liggaam is betowerend. Na’n paar kilometers draai ek om, Nou staan ek in die pad verstom.
Ek durf aan die lange pad, Ek voel moeg en getap. Die beeste wei in die veld, Die droogheid maak my ontsteld. Dan stap ek verder Kyk, in die veld sien ek geen herder? Skielik hardloop ek of iets my jag! Kom by die huis en begin kliphard lag. deur Samuel Theron
Foto: Verskaf Die Axios leerders en personeel het die geleentheid gebruik om die Mispah-leerders lekker te pamperlang en ook dan instandhoudingswerke op die perseël te doen. Mispah skool se dogters was baie spoggerig met hul splinternuwe haarstyle en blinkgepoetste naels. Ons wil graag ons opregte dank uitspreek teenoor die Axios Vaardigheidskool. Dit was sowaar ’n goeie daad wat Mispah Skool nie gou sal vergeet nie.

Seegogga skryf... Anne-Marie Groenewald “I believe I can fly” - deel 5 Nou ja, Bekkie het hom homself al bewys as ‘n voëltjie wat weet hoe lekker dit is om buite in die sonnetjie te wees, maar darem ook veilig by sy ma in die huis. En hy hou baie daarvan om haar siel uit te trek!
Toe verwerdig hy hom om na ‘n nader boompie en laer te kom, want grondboontjiebotterbrood is mos baie lekker. Teen hierdie tyd het die kerk al lankal begin. Gewoonlik vlieg hy self kombuis toe, maar ek het buite gestaan en toe hy sien hy kry nou genoeg aandag en die brood gaan lekkerder wees as die son, klim hy op my hand en sit stroopsoet terwyl ek kombuis toe stap waar hy toe sy klein beloning kry. Agterna, net toe dit amper tyd is vir die kerk om uit te kom, sit en pronk hy in die eetkamer, baie in sy skik met homself dat hy ons so rondgejaag het.
So maak ek en my man ons Sondagoggend gereed vir kerk. En iewers tussen my tandeborselry en grimering aansit, word dit buitegewoon stil in die huis. Al die vensters is toe behalwe die katte se venster, maar ek kry dadelik hond se gedagte. Ons soek en roep, maar meneertjie is skoonveld.
En uiteindelik antwoord hy - iewers van êrens ver oorkant die straat af.
Ek weet nou al ek moet net in die erf bly, en roep. Gewapen met ‘n grondboontjiebotterbroodjie, loop ek dus in die tuin en vertel die hele wêreld hoe heerlik dit smaak. En Bekkie kom kyk, eers uit die hoogte van ons jakarandaboom agter in die erf. “Spot the bird...” so ‘n kwart van bo af, en ‘n derde van links af, 5 voor 12 van die middel af. Hy was eers hoër, maar ek het eers later onthou van die kamera. 14

Ours to enjoy and preserve Continued from page 16 ancient relics were left lying in situ for 337 years as an Overberg open-air museum. In February of 2010, with South African Heritage Resources Agency’s (SAHRA) 'protection' and all, this locally cherished Maritime Cultural Heritage Resource was 'cleaned out'. Fortunately, the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum curator telephoned the police who in turn were able to confirm that an anchor had been cut in two with a blowtorch, and they had traced it to a local scrap merchant. The latter in turn was kind enough to donate the "half an anchor" to the museum where it is displayed today as the oldest anchor on exhibit in the Overberg. Thanks to anchors donated, the museum boasts a half-circle of seven anchors on show. They represent no less than three nations and a period span of the 1670’s to late 1800’s.
'Die Skip' (Meisho Maru 38 - 1982), standing slightly west of Agulhas' most southern point, was also destined to a similar destructive fate as related above. This time SAHRA, SANParks and others jointly nipped the scrap merchant's intentions in the bud leaving 'Die Skip' there for all to enjoy. Scrap divers were next on the scene to remove copper items from historical ships. This time Struisbaai locals put their foot down and called in the police, SAHRA and others. The scrap divers were impeded and chased away, hopefully never to return. Even the fact that at the time local hard hat divers did not recover the brass guns of the Willem de Zwyger (1863) thus preventing a certain meltdown fate. Their eventual recovery in 1979 secured them for us. Today, each gun has a custodian. As a guardian, Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum has one of the 100 lb stone shooting mortars proudly on display in the gardens.

Such a gun could have served to educate the need for preservation and keep the history of these first French visitors to the Overberg, known and alive. It should be an undertaking by Overbergers to look after what is rightfully theirs. Although by preference left in situ, when exposed, items should rather be removed, preserved and displayed for all the reasons mentioned previously.
This author feels strongly about protecting exposed artefacts for educational display and preserved as representatives of Overberg history for generations to come. History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert OURS TO ENJOY AND PRESERVE Strangely enough, the southern part of the Overberg was always less travelled than the other parts of the Western Cape. This fact is well illustrated in the chart of E.E. Mossop in his book, Old Cape Highways, where all regularly used highways are described, even a northern route and an eastern route, but never a southern route. It seems as if the only time anyone went south was to help survivors or salvage goods from the many ships lost there.
in the Overberg - mostly buried but often visible. Not far from there, the iron mast poles from the Willem de Zwyger (1863) still lie in situ where they washed out at the time. Their eerie presence is testimony to the forces involved on that fateful day. Walking further west, signs of the British Steamer Clan MacGreggor (1902) are to be seen. The sandy pathway leading down to the sea at Ryspunt is decorated with ships relics. This exhibit was the work of the remarkable Overberger and history preserver, oom T.W. Human (also called TW Ryspunt). Some 800 m further and the same distance out seaward proudly stands a section of the Queen of the Thames (1871). On passing Hope Point, large wood sections of the Arniston (1815) and the Amersham (1869) are often visible. Next, there is the restored Arniston Monument, standing in memory of one of the Overberg's most tragic losses - of about 350 to 360 souls, only six crew members survived the wrecking.
From a conservation point of view, this was a plus. For instance, the areas in the De Hoop reserve still look like they did when the first shipwreck survivors came on shore and even long before that. Consider the Struisbaai dunes and those to the east of the town Arniston, they are like a 'lucky packet'. When walking between the shifting dunes, one never knows what historical artefact might be visible. It can indeed be said that the Overberg coastline and maritime resources are relatively untouched. From numerous charts found in The Hague archives, the "illustrated story" is always the same - south of today's N2 main road was hardly ever a prime destination. Even as a young diver in the 70’s, this author was one of only a handful of this breed that ventured all the way down to the Agulhas light covered ocean area (Danger Point to Cape Infanta). The absence in the diver numbers too kept the Overberg underwater coastal area relatively untouched. This 'untouched' Overberg is rich in history, and it is our right, privilege, and duty to not only thoroughly enjoy, but also to preserve for ourselves and future generations. So far, the Overbergers are not doing too badly. A walk along the beach area from slightly east of Skipskop to Kassiesbaai endorses this point. Individuals will marvel at the old Skipskop launching place, then if the sand has moved out, they would study one of the earliest anchors 16
Driven by a lifelong interest in Overberg history and heritage, a local entrepreneur, Robert Haarburger, restored the original commemoration site to its initial status. According to Robert, a lot of research went into the project to ensure an authentic end product. All the artefacts on display in the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum were exposed items removed and donated in the interest of education, enjoying and preserving them. The iron cannon standing in the old church building was found exposed and promptly salvaged and donated. The same is true of the large Dutch Swedish cast 8-pndr iron gun displayed in the museum's garden.
If they had been left in situ, as is often encouraged by authorities, they would never have stood the test of time for thousands to view and admire. In all probability, these presumably Schonenberg (1722) guns, today seen as educational items and representatives of Overberg history, sadly would have found these guns cut up and sold to scrapyards for steel value. ‘Gift of the Givers’ besoek Elim Vervolg van bladsy 18 Hy het aan Overdeberg genoem dat mense van oral hul hande uitgesteek het tydens die pandemie om die nood te verlig. Daar is baie mense wat ly en swaarkry as gevolg van hierdie pandemie, en dit is wonderlik hoe daar na mindergegoede en ander behoeftiges uitreik word. Daar is voorwaar 'n mooi gees van ‘Ubuntu’ gewys. Tesame met hierdie uitdeling, is ook sop wat deur Black Oystercatcher geskenk was, uitgedeel. Die inwoners van Elim het al die geskenkpakkies met die grootste van dankbaarheid ontvang en groot waardering uitgespreek teenoor die ’Gift of the Givers’ organisasie.

Liefdadigheid vir Elim se oue van dae Lunette Coetzee Op Dinsdag die 7de September 2020, het die OnderBurgermeester Me. Zukiswa Tonisi en Raadslid Evelyn Sauls, Elim se oue van dae verras met ‘n besoek om ‘n liefdadigheidspakkie te oorhandig. Me. Mathilda Richter was aangenaam verras vir besoek uit die boonste kringe. Sy is die oudste inwoner van Sandstraat. Matilda herstel nog nadat sy verlede week in die hospitaal met hartsake opgeneem was.

Nasionale Boomplantweek Lunette Coetzee Hierdie pas afgelope week was Nasionale Boomplantweek, en Kaap Agulhas skole was vereer met die besoek van Miss Earth South Africa soos deur KAM gereël. Elim Primêr se boomplantingsessie op Donderdag 8 September, was dan ook bygewoon deur die uitvoerende Burgermeester van Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit, Paul Swart, die Onder-Burgermeester Zukiswa Tunisi, raadslid Evelyn Sauls en wykskomiteelid, Johanna Fillies. Saam met Miss Earth South Africa, was Bongi van die Departement Water & Sanitasie en Gurshwin Prins, Kommunikasies, KAM - onder die ondersteunende oog van skoolhoof, Me. Caureen Cloete en opvoeder, mnr. Martin Salies en Mnr. Louis Geswindt (nie-opvoeder).
Die bome wat aangeplant was by Elim Primêr ‘n Wilde Olyf, Wilde Perske en Soetdoring. Vir die burgermeester, was dit 'n wonderlike en baie persoonlike belewenis om sy ou laerskool te besoek en herrineringe terug te roep. Hy kon sy klaskamer uitwys en sy onderwysers by die naam noem. Hy het ook gepraat van die goeie dissipline en netjiese rye waar hulle met uitgestrekte arms moes staan.

Sedert die 3de April het vier mense op Elim hulself as barmhartiges in die Elim-gemeenskap toegewy. Hulle is Guslin Viegland, Franay Davids en dan Freddie Goliath (kerkraadslede), sowel as Joyce October. Hulle het gekook en uitgedeel,asook alle skenking tussen behoeftiges verdeel. Gedurende die COVID-19 pandemie kon baie mense nie werk nie en selfs inkomstes is verloor.

In Juliemaand was dit dan Devolene October wat gereël het dat daar skenkings van ‘Gift of the Givers’ op Elim ontvang sou word.
Dit sal nou 'n groottotaal van 850 bome wat teen hierdie week deur Miss Earth in die provinsie oor die laaste drie jaar geplant is.
Sy het toe vir Guslin Engel genader en alle onderhandelings met ‘Gift of the Givers’ gedoen. Hierdie proses het gelei tot 'n besoek van ‘Gift of the Givers’. Dinsdag, 8 September, het mnr. Ali Sablay (Projekbestuurder) die span Elim toe gebring.
Margot is baie ingenome met hierdie projek waarmee sy besig is en dis vir haar 'n groot voorreg om bewusmaking vir die natuur aan te wakker, asook om lieflike bome te plant. Dit pas ook in by haar afgehandelde studies in Omgewingsbestuur.
Daar is toe dan ook ‘n aantal van die persoonlike beskermingspakkette by Bredasdorp hospitaal afgelaai. Daar is 85 behoeftige families uitgewys. Altesaam 100 kospakkies en meel, blikkieskos en water is uitgedeel. Vervolg op bladsy 17
