AGEISM: SEEING BEYOND THE STEREOTYPES

Aging is one of the few universal experiences: from the moment we’re born, we begin growing older. We learn, adapt and mature. But at a certain point, “getting older” becomes framed in many minds as a problem. From workplaces to social settings, from media to our own self-talk, ageism — the biases and stereotypes about age — quietly infiltrates our lives. A Personal Lens My father’s story illustrates how painful this can be. In his 60s, he reentered the job market, only to have decades of expertise diminished because of something as simple as gray hair. He was stunned. He knew his skills mattered — but apparently his age did more. Watching his frustration and sense of invisibility was heartbreaking.
