APRIL 2026 FEATURE

THE CHANGING TIDES OF FRIENDSHIP: NAVIGATING CONNECTION LATER IN LIFE Friendships, like the seasons, aren’t static. They don’t stay the same or last forever, and there is a rhythm to relationships that involves endings…and new beginnings. In our younger years, friendships often form easily—through work, kids and community, all of which naturally bring people together. School, early careers, raising children—these environments create built-in opportunities for connection. We find our people in the school pick-up line, in the cubicle next to ours or at the church bake sale, with a mean brownie recipe and an offer for coffee. We volunteer, cheer our kids on, take trips, watch each other’s pets and support each other through marriages, divorces, births, deaths and inevitable moves. We say our goodbyes, which means embracing hellos.
