A JOURNEY FROM LO C A L R O OT S TO I N T E R N AT I O N A L I M PAC T DIALOG Fitzroy has transformed from a regional contractor into a leading provider of integrated technical solutions across a wide range of industries, including an extensive history in services for oil and gas facilities. ith more than 65 years of experience, DIALOG Fitzroy has become a leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, earning a strong reputation for technical excellence, expertise, and reliability. Founded in 1959 as Fitzroy Engineering in New Plymouth, in the Taranaki region of New Zealand (NZ), the company has grown from its regional Taranaki origins into a diversified project delivery partner. It serves clients across multiple sectors, including energy, infrastructure, storage terminals, food and beverage, industrial, and manufacturing. Today, DIALOG Fitzroy employs over 500 people spanning a network 2 | APAC Outlook Issue 82
of offices, workshops, and project sites across New Zealand’s North Island and Australia’s East Coast. Its core capability is providing endto-end solutions, bringing together engineering, fabrication, construction, and maintenance services through a single delivery partner. This includes delivering pressure vessels, tanks, piping systems, structural steel, process equipment, modular systems, and other specialist industrial components through DIALOG Fitzroy’s integrated workshops and client site-based operations. This enables DIALOG Fitzroy to support clients’ process plants and assets from initial concept through construction and into ongoing operation.
“A defining point in our history was joining the DIALOG Group (DIALOG) in 2011, combining Fitzroy Engineering’s construction and maintenance expertise with DIALOG’s engineering, tankage, and terminal capabilities. “DIALOG is a leading integrated technical services and energy infrastructure group, with upstream, storage terminals, asset management, and EPC services across Southeast Asia. Being part of DIALOG enables us to offer clients a broader integrated solution from concept through to ongoing operations and maintenance,” introduces Kerry Williamson, Managing Director of the major multidisciplinary service provider.

Indeed, in recent years, the Taranaki energy sector has undergone significant transformation, prompting companies to adapt their business models to meet evolving client demand. As a Taranaki-based company, DIALOG Fitzroy has achieved this seamlessly, diversifying its client base across industrial sectors and establishing key regionally focused positions. However, Williamson admits that clients increasingly want fewer interfaces and greater accountability. Rather than managing multiple contractors, many companies are looking for strategic partners who can take full responsibility for EPC services and ongoing maintenance. “In response, we have evolved from a traditional contractor model into a business that designs, builds, and maintains critical industrial infrastructure. We call it ‘End-to-End’

delivery. We are not a consultant; we design, build, and maintain and continue to invest in engineering capability, project delivery systems, regional infrastructure, and specialist technical expertise so we can support our clients across the full asset lifecycle,” he explains. “Technology continues to play an important role in our business. We have advanced fabrication technologies, digital project
management systems, 3D design tools, and modern quality and project controls that improve safety, productivity, and delivery certainty for our clients.” Importantly, DIALOG Fitzroy’s focus on relationships has remained constant, with the company positioning itself as a long-term partner rather than simply a contractor delivering a single scope of work.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN INDUSTRY CHALLENGES CURRENTLY FACING DIALOG FITZROY, AND HOW ARE YOU ADDRESSING THEM? “Many of our strongest client relationships have developed over years and continue to grow because we consistently deliver safe, reliable, and practical outcomes,” Williamson declares.
A PATH TO SUSTAINABLE GROWTH DIALOG Fitzroy’s success has primarily been driven by long-term client partnerships, consistent execution, and a demonstrated ability to deliver complex industrial projects with certainty. “Many of our longest-standing client relationships started with relatively small pieces of work. We did a good job, developed an understanding of our clients’ businesses, and over time earned their trust to take on larger and more complex projects. “We have focused on staying close to our clients, understanding their long-term challenges, and investing ahead of demand in the capabilities they require,” Williamson outlines.
KERRY WILLIAMSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR: “Firstly, a major issue facing the sector is workforce capability. The demand for skilled people continues to grow whilst major projects across Australia and NZ compete for the same resources. Our response is to build capability across a regional operating model, focusing on early client engagement to understand short and medium-term needs. We effectively develop and deploy expertise where our clients need it most. “The second is balancing growth with service quality. As clients undertake larger and more complex projects, it is important that we do not lose sight of the long-term relationships and maintenance work that form the backbone of our business. We focus on balancing our portfolio so we can deliver the same level of service to both new major projects and long-standing regional clients. “Finally, we continue to see pressure from increasingly price-driven procurement models. Whilst up-front cost will always be important, our focus is on helping clients achieve the best outcomes. We differentiate ourselves through demonstrating safety, quality, reliability, and the ability to support assets throughout their lifecycle. In the long term, that creates greater value than selecting a contractor on price alone.”

Therefore, rather than chasing every opportunity, the company has concentrated on building long-term partnerships that create sustainable value for both parties. It has also diversified its portfolio across industries and geographies, reducing reliance on any single market sector. As DIALOG Fitzroy builds the road ahead, its strategic direction emphasises strengthening the
company’s foundation rather than merely increasing its scale. “Whilst we expect continued growth, our focus is less on chasing size and more on building a stronger platform for the future. We are investing in people, systems, facilities, and capability to ensure we can continue delivering consistently as our business expands. “Additionally, we are noticing opportunities in the energy transition, industrial infrastructure, asset integrity, and major capital projects where clients are looking for integrated delivery partners,” Williamson observes.
KEY TO A RESILIENT SUPPLY CHAIN Established relationships are essential for maintaining a stable supply chain at DIALOG Fitzroy. “Long-standing relationships with suppliers and subcontractors are critical to our success. Just like with our clients, many of these partnerships have been built over decades. Trusted suppliers enable us to respond quickly, uphold quality standards, and deliver consistency across multiple projects and locations. “The best outcomes occur when clients, contractors, and suppliers work together as an integrated team, all focused on a common objective,” Williamson points out.
Meanwhile, with a strong and growing presence across Australasia, DIALOG Fitzroy must ensure effective communication and collaboration amongst its teams in such diverse locations. As a result, it will continue to implement, maintain, and foster a collaborative company culture across its international offices as communication and alignment become increasingly important to organisational growth. “Over the past few years, we have implemented a regional operating model that brings decision-making closer to our clients and people whilst maintaining consistency across the business,” he highlights. “Regular leadership forums, monthly company-wide safety meetings, and a strong focus on shared values help maintain alignment across our operations. Whether someone is working in Brisbane, Whangārei, Taupo, Wellington, Sydney, or New Plymouth, we want our people to feel part of the same team with shared objectives, which include empowerment, common standards, company values, and a one-company mindset.” Ultimately, the relationships within DIALOG and DIALOG Fitzroy are built around delivering the best outcome for the client, regardless of where the capability sits within the broader group.

DIALOG FITZROY CONSTRUCTION
INNOVATIONS IN INDUSTRIAL EXCELLENCE DIALOG Fitzroy’s strength lies in delivering construction-led engineering solutions for complex industrial projects, which is a key differentiator. Indeed, the company operates in sectors where safety, quality, technical capability, and delivery certainty are critical. Moreover, its clients increasingly value having engineering, fabrication, construction, and maintenance expertise available through a single provider. “We are particularly strong in heavy steel fabrication, tankage, terminals, industrial infrastructure, towers remediation, and complex brownfield environments where understanding how an operating facility actually functions, and its associated risks, are just as important as the engineering design itself,” Williamson notes. Furthermore, DIALOG Fitzroy’s practical construction experience helps it engineer construction-led solutions that can be delivered effectively on client sites, reducing risk and creating value for clients. By delivering End-to-End industrial project services across a wide range of sectors, the company exhibits strong evidence of its growing capability. This is demonstrated by recent and significant investments in new workshops and offices and exemplified by key projects, including delivering storage infrastructure for the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) Base Ōhakea, conversion of Channel Infrastructure’s Tank 06, working with Southern Oil Refinery in New South Wales, and the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia (GEGHA) project, led by Hiringa Energy and Sundown Pastoral Company. Collectively, these projects highlight DIALOG Fitzroy’s expanding footprint, scalability, and performance in delivering infrastructure 8 | APAC Outlook Issue 82
