WHEN CINDE SCHAFFER AND MATTHEW ZASLOW FIRST CROSSED PATHS AT A CHARITY EVENT, THEY DIDN’T JUST FIND A SHARED PASSION FOR PHILANTHROPY— THEY DISCOVERED A SYNERGY THAT WOULD REDEFINE LUXURY HOSPITALITY AND EVENT PRODUCTION.
Schaffer, the owner of Dream Houses LLC, and Zaslow, the visionary behind Eventure Productions, have built their reputations on curating extraordinary experiences. Now, through a dynamic collaboration, they are merging their expertise to create unforgettable moments for travelers and event-goers alike. A MEETING OF MINDS AND MISSIONS Schaffer and Zaslow’s partnership began at a Wings for Life charity event, a global effort dedicated to
spinal cord research. Zaslow, then serving as the event’s director of partnerships, was responsible for crafting high-impact fundraising experiences. Schaffer, drawn by her passion for supporting the charity and its cause, immediately connected with Zaslow. Their conversation quickly moved beyond the event itself. Guests were treated to curated excursions, including a private yacht day and a curated beachfront dining experience, making the entire wedding celebration a retreat in itself. “It was one of those events where everything just felt magical,” Zaslow said. “The love, the setting, the attention to detail—it was the perfect example of how a venue and an event can come together to create something truly extraordinary.” Schaffer echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of making every guest feel welcomed and cared for. “We want every couple—regardless of background— to feel like their wedding is not just an event, but an experience that reflects their love and individuality,” she said. Huynh, originally from Saigon, Vietnam, relocated to the United States at age 13. He developed a passion for cooking early on, leading him to establish multiple restaurants
in Houston, Texas. In October 2022, he expanded his culinary ventures to Puerto Vallarta with the opening of Let’s Pho. At the young age of 37 he has had a career as a model, been a philanthropist for the LGBT+ community and successfully opened five restaurants. Building on the success of his Puerto Vallarta location, Huynh expanded Let’s Pho to Guadalajara in the summer of 2024. The Guadalajara restaurant, located at Morelos 1854 in the Ladrón de Guevara neighborhood, has been well-received for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
“As a college dropout, I had to create my own opportunity. I had to do something with my life. So when the opportunity of owning my own restaurant presented itself, I took it,¨ Huynh said. He is a self-taught chef and Huynh says he has a natural ability to see opportunities and take action, which is what brought him and his new restaurant, Let’s Pho, to Puerto Vallarta. He started his career as a waiter, learned how to cook at the early age of 13, and knew then that he had a passion for cooking. “I have been coming to Puerto

Vallarta for more than 10 years,” Huynh explained. “But when the pandemic hit, I suddenly had more free time on my hands and Puerto Vallarta was open for visitors. I visited often then and fell in love with the Zona Romantica area, the people and the community. Everyone here is so helpful and welcoming. It’s amazing.” Huynh’s recognition underscores his commitment to both the culinary arts and the LGBTQ+ community in Puerto Vallarta. He emphasized, “Cuisine is not just the food we serve, it’s also culture, and part of my identity. It’s part of who I am that I have the privilege of introducing to this charming city.”

Beyond his culinary endeavors, Huynh is dedicated to community involvement. He quietly supports many community endeavors including RISE children's shelter, the SPCA PV (pet shelter), Vallarta
Gay+ Community Center, Vallarta School for Girls, Women's Shelter, Vallarta Abuelos, Vallarta Cares (formerly Vallarta Food Bank) and others.
PUERTO VALLARTA GAYS: The Puerto Vallarta Gays: Best of Awards, initiated by local entrepreneur Jet De La Isla, celebrates individuals and businesses that enhance the city’s LGBTQ+ scene. This year’s ceremony featured various categories, including Best Cocktail Bar awarded to La Noche, Best Male Strip Club to Wet Dreams, and Best Gay Hotel to Casa Cupula.
Following an open nomination period and a final round narrowing down the top three contenders in each category, winners were announced by hosts Alison Lo and Father Chaka Paradise. The night featured music by DJ Jameson Rabbit and was proudly sponsored by Dog & Cat and ThrIVe MedSpa.
“I wanted to make a big impact in the community. When Let’s Pho moved into town, everyone welcomed us with open arms. We are here today because of the support we received from this beautiful place we call home,¨ he said.
Huynh’s dedication to authentic Vietnamese cuisine and community engagement has solidified Let’s Pho as a notable establishment in Puerto Vallarta’s diverse culinary landscape.
Best of Awards Winners and Finalists A dedicated committee—consisting of Philip Weir, Alison Lo, and John Ramsey—oversaw the nomination and voting process to ensure fairness and transparency. “It was an absolute pleasure to witness the community come together for this celebration of the best in Vallarta’s LGBTQ+
scene,” Jet said. “We are what makes Vallarta an international gay destination, and this is just the beginning.” The event was co-produced by Johnny Paraiso Productions, alongside the incredibly talented performers Eva Jimenez, Chris Lopez, Evita Loca, and Maru Prado Conti.

Wins ‘Best of Gays 2024’ Award, Celebrates Growing Success
SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2022, STUDS BEAR & LEATHER BAR HAS RAPIDLY BECOME A CORNERSTONE OF PUERTO VALLARTA’S VIBRANT LGBTQ+ SCENE. CELEBRATED AS THE CITY’S FIRST BEAR AND LEATHER BAR, DURING THE RECENT BEST OF GAYS 2024 AWARDS, STUDS CLINCHED THE BEST BEAR BAR TITLE FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN A GROWING POOL OF BEAR-THEMED BARS IN VALLARTA. STUDS owner Mike Owens, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, envisioned a space where the bear and leather
communities could feel at home. “Creating STUDS was about filling a void in Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife,” Owens shared. “The community’s embrace has been overwhelming, and this recognition is a testament to that support.” This year’s awards also brought another reason to celebrate, as Victor, a standout member of the STUDS team, was named Best LGBT+ Bartender. In 2023, responding to growing demand, STUDS expanded to two floors, absorbing the former Therapy Bar space on the first level. This expansion allowed STUDS to create a private area on the first floor, and expand The Gear Shop by STUDS enhancing the venue’s immersive experience with more gogo dancers and two DJ’s for special events. The bar’s ambiance is enriched by leather lounge seating and dynamic lighting. Guests are encouraged
to shed their streetwear in favor of jockstraps, harnesses, or other leather attire, with custom merchandise available for purchase at The Gear Shop.

Reflecting on the journey, Owens expressed gratitude and optimism.
“Our goal has always been to create a welcoming space for everyone where they have options to purchase clothing, harnesses, jockstraps and other accessories to enhance their STUDS experience. We want STUDS to be more than just another bar in Vallarta, we are striving to create an 'experience' for our customers,” said Ibanez. STUDS commitment to the community extends beyond its physical space. The bar also offers a mobile bar service for anyone that wants a bar set up in their home or place of business. Additionally, a

CASA CUPULA'S BISTRO GALLERY NAMED 'BEST LGBT+-OWNED ART GALLERY’ Thoroughly redesigned for 2024, The Bistro Gallery is Puerto Vallarta’s first art gallery dedicated to showcasing South American art. Under the curation of Cristhiam Castillo, the gallery’s latest exhibition highlights a diverse range of Latin American talent, including Chilean artist Monica Villarroel and Colombian artists Uvaldo Torres (BaLDOT), Jimmy Villegas, Juan Manrique Silva, and Iván Guayasamin. “This recognition affirms our mission to celebrate Latin American artists and their unique perspectives,” Castillo said. “The artists we feature bring a profound depth to contemporary art, intertwining their personal histories, cultural influences and social commentaries.” Castillo has worked with these artists since 2018, and the art on display represents a range of Latin American diversity. In 2021, West Vlaanderen newspaper recognized her as one of the five most influential people in the region. “In my latest paintings, I have given up on formal logic,” Villarroel said. “The images now respond to the unconscious, linked to dreams. I do not try to control or understand them. It is evident that the way they are presented could allude to a certain narrative, to build a theatrical scenario in which the observer constructs the plot. I am interested in ambiguity, that there is no single reading. Each spectator will always arrive at a different pursuit. In my paintings, there is a mixture of elements, some memories and fears from my childhood that follow me to this day. He uses bold colors, dynamic shapes, and a unique combination of abstraction. “BaLDOT’s use of bold colors and abstract forms conveys the physicality and emotion of his past life as a fighter,” Castillo said. “His work tells a story of perseverance and transformation.” JUAN MANRIQUE SILVA Silva, of Colombia, studied at the National University of Colombia in Bogotá from 1983-1988. He has been an art teacher for more than
four decades, is active nationally and internationally as an artist, and has received numerous awards. His teaching career includes working with special education and communities affected by various social issues. His primary discipline is drawing, and he explores the possibilities of different materials. His art addresses themes of inclusion, environmentalism, social problems, child abuse, and the defense of the planet. "His intention," says Curator Castillo, "is to raise awareness of what happens to human beings and the planet. He has worked extensively with special education programs and communities affected by social injustice. His work is an urgent call for awareness, using mixed media and paper-based compositions to highlight critical global issues.” IVAN GUAYASAMIN Guayasamin, of Colombia, born on the slopes of the Galeras volcano, is known for his Latin American
indigenous expressionism. He has exhibited his work around the world for more than 40 years and has created more than 1,000 pieces using acrylic or oil on canvas applied with a spatula. His paintings are inspired by the expressions of indigenous Latin Americans. “Guayasamin’s work is deeply rooted in indigenous identity and resistance,” Castillo said. “His exaggerated strokes and dominant ochre, dark, and red tones convey the beauty and pain of indigenous communities struggling to preserve their heritage.” Guayasamin's goal is to raise awareness, so that viewers capture the "beauty" found in the "pain" of the indigenous people's connection to their land, their colonial and creative heritage. Blondies' foray into fashion began approximately four years after its inception. Co-owners Shawn McGuire and Dino Alberti envisioned creating a line that encapsulated the vibrant spirit of Puerto Vallarta while supporting the local economy. To achieve this, they established an in-house design studio above their second location, Los Otros Blondies, ensuring that every piece of clothing, including their renowned swimwear, was designed, printed, and sewn on-site by local talent. Unlike many fashion brands that outsource production overseas, Blondies made a deliberate choice to keep everything local. This
approach allowed them to maintain strict quality control and foster a collaborative environment where artisans could contribute their expertise. The result is a collection of swimwear and apparel that resonates with both locals and visitors, reflecting the colorful and dynamic essence of Puerto Vallarta. Each item, from tank tops and T-shirts to swim trunks and accessories, is infused with the brand's signature pop-art aesthetic, making it a staple for those who appreciate bold, distinctive fashion. The demand for Blondies' fashion line has grown exponentially, pushing the brand to expand its production facilities. "We’re almost getting pushed out of our office because our production keeps growing," McGuire said as he gave Out & About PV Magazine a tour of their production facilities. The need for more space and equipment is a testament to the popularity of their designs. McGuire described the meticulous process behind their clothing production: Designs are first printed

The attention to detail is evident in every piece, from swimwear to beach towels and even custom-printed thermoses. "You’ll see here that even the most simple tank top or swimsuit can often use as many as four or five different machines to complete all the different stitches," Alberti explained. "So they all work together and kind of pass them along." Unlike large-scale factories where workers are trained to perform only a single stitch repeatedly, Blondies trains each of its employees to operate multiple machines. This holistic approach not only increases efficiency but also empowers workers with a broader skill set, making for a more dynamic and engaged team. Blondies’ commitment to ethical fashion and local employment was further reinforced when they acquired the design studio previously operated by Hotel Mercurio. "When Hotel Mercurio closed… they had a little design studio where they made their swimsuits," Alberti said. "So when they closed, we called over there asking what we could do to help. We ended up buying out his entire studio — all of the sewing machines — and even offered all of his employees a job. Many of those girls came with us." This move not only expanded Blondies’ production capacity but also provided job security for skilled artisans in the community. Blondies’ success in the fashion industry has also led to new creative ventures, including the introduction of unique collections featuring intricate embellishments.

A JOURNEY OF ART, IDENTITY, AND HEALING Justice Isaiah is not just an artist—he’s a a painter, poet, and spiritual healer - his journey has been shaped by loss, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to self-expression. From the streets of Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the vibrant artistic community of Puerto Vallarta, his life is a testament to survival and reinvention. Through his art and poetry, Isaiah embraces what he calls Queer Resistance—a fearless declaration of identity and perseverance. But his work is more than self-expression; it’s a mission. Whether through his paintings, his words, or his spiritual guidance, he seeks to uplift others, helping them find healing and empowerment just as he did. His path to Puerto Vallarta was anything but conventional. It was forged through pain, spiritual awakening, and an unrelenting desire to create. Now, in a city that welcomes both his artistry and his soul, he’s thriving—and inviting others to do the same.
FROM TRAGEDY TO CREATIVITY: A YOUNG ARTIST’S AWAKENING Born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Isaiah grew up in a diverse, working-class community. His childhood was happy until the age of six, when his father was murdered. The loss shattered his world, leaving a void that shaped much of his early life. His mother worked tirelessly to support the family, and though she provided for him, her absence left him longing for connection. At twelve, Isaiah found an outlet in dance, a medium that helped him process his grief. By high school, he turned to visual art as well, channeling his emotions into his creations. “Without art, I don’t know what I would have done with all of those unresolved feelings,” he says. Isaiah always knew he was different— something he now celebrates. “I was always super weird, but thankfully I was never bullied,” he recalls. His confidence showed early; for his high school prom, he was the only male student wearing a gown, a bold declaration of selfacceptance.

A SPIRITUAL TURNING POINT The COVID-19 pandemic brought another wave of loss for Isaiah. He lost nearly all his material possessions and felt as though he had hit rock bottom. But it was in this darkness that he found his greatest light. While visiting his mother at the cancer center where she worked, he met Robert E. Lee, a Black Buddhist practitioner who became a mentor and friend. “Brother Lee was the first man who didn’t ask anything of me,” Isaiah shares. “That made me trust him enough to share the joy of his religion.” Isaiah’s spiritual journey deepened as he studied Nichiren Buddhism and explored other religious traditions. Eventually, he became an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church, allowing him to provide spiritual services such as baptisms, commitment ceremonies, and vow renewals—especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community who seek non-traditional, inclusive spaces. DISCOVERING MEXICO AND HIS ANCESTRY In 2019, Isaiah moved to Brooklyn, immersing himself in a dynamic artistic scene. But despite his love for the city, he felt a strong pull toward his Latino heritage. His father was Puerto Rican, his mother Honduran, but it was the discovery of his Indigenous Mexican ancestry that sparked an even deeper connection. Determined to explore his roots, Isaiah traveled to Mexico, showcasing his artwork in Oaxaca and León. However, it was Puerto Vallarta’s artistic energy and LGBTQ+-welcoming community that truly felt like home. “I’ve created some of my best work here—paintings, poetry, healing, and even love-making,” he says with a laugh. His art and poetry, which he describes as Queer Resistance, reflect his experiences of being “othered.” “Sometimes it’s sexual, sometimes not, but perseverance is always at the core,” he explains. When asked how his poetry and visual art intersect, Isaiah is thoughtful: “Poetry helps me name

my feelings. Art gives them a face. They inform each other but live in different worlds.” BUILDING A SPACE FOR HEALING AND CONNECTION Beyond art and poetry, Isaiah envisions creating a holistic space that blends Indigenous wisdom with Buddhist teachings. His dream is to offer services that nurture both body and soul, including bone broth ceremonies, guided writing exercises, art therapy, and deep connection workshops. “It’s about integrating mind, body, and spirit,” he says. Though still in development, the project promises to be a sanctuary for those seeking healing, self-expression, and community. Details on the location and opening date will be announced soon. For now, Isaiah can often be found at Biblioteca Los Mangos, Puerto Vallarta’s beloved public library, where he enjoys reading and sharing his work. EMBRACING THE PRESENT AND LOOKING AHEAD As our conversation comes to an end, Isaiah reflects on a truth he learned early in life: “This existence is short and finite—it’s all temporary.” But instead of letting that knowledge breed fear, he’s embraced it as a source of strength. “Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, but you have the reins in your hands. No person or trauma can take that away from you,” he says. With a serene smile, he offers a final thought—one that could very well be his mantra: “There’s a whole world waiting to embrace you. Bravely receive that embrace and experience the joy of liberation and renewal.”

Vallarta Medical Center Partner for LGBTQ+ Health Care THE VALLARTA GAY+ COMMUNITY CENTER (VG+CC) AND VALLARTA MEDICAL CENTER (VMC) HAVE ANNOUNCED A PARTNERSHIP TO ENHANCE AND EXPAND MEDICAL SERVICES FOR THE REGION’S LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. This collaboration is designed to provide comprehensive, accessible, and inclusive healthcare, with a strong focus on addressing the health disparities often faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. “Our community center was founded a year ago to ensure widespread and continued distribution of PrEP medications,” said Pedro Lopez, executive director of the VG+CC. “However, we are not set up to offer general medical services, and for this, we especially value the outreach of the Vallarta Medical Center to provide these services at a discount to our clients.” Under the new partnership, Vallarta Medical Center will provide health education, offer a 20% discount card on most services to VG+CC clients, and deliver a wide range of medical services tailored to the LGBTQ+ community. “The Vallarta Medical Center is uniquely positioned to provide compassionate services to the LGBTQ+ community as we are a
community-owned and operated medical facility,” said Israel Valdez Cruz, marketing manager. Key highlights of the partnership include: COMPREHENSIVE HEALTHCARE SERVICES: Vallarta Medical Center will offer a broad spectrum of medical services, including general health care, mental health support, and HIV/ AIDS care. All services are bilingual, with urgent services available at the Zona Romantica location. URGENT OR EMERGENCY CARE VISITS: A special $400 peso consultation fee will be available for urgent care visits at Vallarta Medical Center and its urgent care clinic. Rewind about a year: by chance, Mau and Jamie connected on Facebook, and soon after, Josh followed suit. That mixer was the first time the three of us would meet in person. After the event, we frequently bumped into each other, leading Mau to share a thought we all echoed: “We keep crossing paths for a reason.”

THE ENCOUNTER Imagine this: An Out & About gay mixer in late 2024 becomes the unexpected beginning of our story. While sipping one of Blondies’ famous slushy drinks—Josh with his beloved Brassy Blondie, and Jamie enjoying a glass of wine—he spots Mauricio across the room. But before diving into that moment, we must highlight how Blondies has become our go-to spot over the years. It’s a place where you can share a drink with anyone and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. Not overly fancy, yet beautifully designed, Blondies stands out among the many bars in Puerto Vallarta, thanks to its friendly staff and welcoming vibe. For us, it's the perfect meeting place to hang out and connect with friends.
THE FIRST DATE After what felt like weeks of conversation (but was actually just days), an invitation for dinner was extended. However, there was a twist—Josh and Jamie were hosting friends from Canada over the holidays, so our first date turned into a dinner for eight at Trattoria Di Nuovo. As proud Canadians, we LOVE Italian food, and there’s no better way to celebrate with lifelong friends than over some of the best homemade pasta in Puerto Vallarta. While we adore many Italian eateries in PV, Trattoria Di Nuovo stands out for its incredible pasta and rich sauces, drawing us back time and again. The Italian courtyard atmosphere, paired with fine wine and delicious food, makes it a favorite to bring others to share a meal. That evening, Mau chose a chair at the table between the two. Maybe it was the wine, maybe the romantic atmosphere, but an arm went

around the shoulders of another and the exchange would continue throughout the meal. There was an undeniable spark that night. THE AFTER DATE You know when you’re out and about and don’t really want the night to end or just end up at the same place or end up home drinking wine? Well It was one of those nights. We had recently heard of a new place in town called “The Social Club”. It was deemed to be a speak-easy type of place that had music, and good drinks. With Diego, our favorite bartender from another local haunt now on the team, we decided to check it out. The atmosphere was hard to describe— funky, cool, and effortlessly charming… it was just perfect. The dimly-lit ambience is wonderful for a date or a fun evening with friends. Little did we know, we all would fall in love with this new find and that it would play a part in our story as the backdrop for something amazing starting between the three of us. ABOUT THE THOUPLE Jamie Alexander is a regular contributor of Out & About Magazine and can be seen most days sitting behind his desk at PVRPV as Director of Business Development. Mauricio Osorio is a trained professional Massage Therapist and can be seen throughout Puerto Vallarta offering in-home services to his clients. In recent years, Alison found herself contemplating relationships, manifesting a desire for a partner who was kind, focused, and queeridentifying. Little did she know
that the very next day, she would connect with a woman she had admired from a distance for years. This unexpected turn of events highlighted the power of manifestation in her life and the surprises that love can bring. Elena, on the other hand, was born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Northern Mexico, and raised in Puerto Vallarta. Her childhood aspirations were as diverse as they were imaginative, from wanting to be an archaeologist to dreaming of working in the circus with the Ringling Brothers. While exploring her identity, Elena realized she simply never fell in love with men, and her heart gravitated toward women. Her career journey began in the service industry, where she honed her skills in coffee shops before embarking on a decade-long adventure with Carnival Cruise Lines as a mixologist. Alongside her best friend, Laura Jaimes, co-owner of Elixir Mixology Bar, she envisioned creating a welcoming space for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community. They sought to establish a bar that fostered an inclusive atmosphere, where individuals could connect and enjoy good drinks in a friendly environment. The paths of Alison and Elena first crossed at Elixir, where Alison enjoyed a cocktail. But after sometime, one night, as the bar was closing up for the evening, she had the audacity to knock on the door to ask for the Wi-Fi password. This brief interaction would lay the groundwork for a deeper connection that would unfold about 3 years later. Their true spark ignited when, after a chance encounter at Casita & Garden, Elena invited Alison to a birthday celebration. In a quintessentially lesbian gesture, Elena soon entrusted Alison with a set of her house keys. As a power couple, they have faced the challenges of balancing their busy schedules during high seasons while nurturing their relationship. Their commitment to open communication has been essential in navigating the demands of their professional lives, allowing them to prioritize rest and connection. They acknowledge that mutual respect, embracing their independence, and viewing their love through different lenses—as friends, partners, and business collaborators—have played a significant role in their success. Together, they have built a thriving business landscapes, with behind the helm of Elixir Mixology Bar and Alison, working tirelessly between performance venues throughout the city and managing entertainment at Casita & Garden last season, they both serve as beacons of community and inclusivity. Both Claudia and Carmen hail from Mexico City, a bustling metropolis known for its rich culture, diverse population, and culinary delights. Claudia, a self-proclaimed “Chilanga,” grew up dreaming of becoming a marine biologist or a photographer before eventually setting her sights on law. Her path led her to the culinary world, where her passion for food and hospitality blossomed. Carmen, on the other hand, was drawn to the hospitality industry from a young age. Growing up, she and her brother would play “hotel,” taking turns as guests and staff, unknowingly laying the foundation for her future career in hotel management. The journey of self-discovery for both women was not without its challenges. Each faced moments of realization that their happiness lay in relationships with women. For Carmen, after experiencing a few unsuccessful romances with men, she found her true happiness in the arms of another woman. Similarly, Claudia recognized her attraction to women from a young age, but it wasn't until she began dating that she understood the depth of her feelings.
Fate intervened when they met through their mutual friend, Regina, in what was essentially a blind date. Though initial sparks were absent, their friendship grew over the years, eventually blossoming into romance. The turning point came when they began working together at the restaurant El Arrayán in 2003. As they collaborated on this project, they discovered a deep connection that would solidify their partnership, both in love and business. The couple’s professional journey has not been without its hurdles. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to their restaurant, forcing them to adapt and rethink their approach. However, it also provided an opportunity for them to simplify their lives and focus on what truly mattered: their love for each other and their passion for hospitality. In 2021, they launched OCULTO, a more intimate dining experience that allows them to welcome guests into their space while offering a relaxed atmosphere and exceptional service.
What sets Claudia and Carmen apart is their unwavering commitment to each other, both personally and professionally.
