I interned at Ernst & Young in Dallas, TX over the summer! They are one of the Big 4 accounting firms I worked in the Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS) department. Some of my responsibilities included helping prepare financial statements and reports in accordance with accounting standards, engaging with clients to understand their financial reporting needs and providing support, and working closely with other team members and global teams to meet project deadlines
I interned at Fastenal and some responsibilities I had were Supply chain management, customer relations, inventory management, and delivery services A valuable thing I learned was that asking questions isn’t embarrassing, the best way to learn is from people who have been in your position before Advice I would give to students is to become friends with your professors and become more active in college Anyone can have a decent GPA but they’re really looking for people who are more active and doing other things.
I interned at Caltech -- LIGO and some responsibilities were to manage requisitions in a Buyer role; draft RFQ/RFP documents and manage bid lists, data tracking; ensure government compliance for all procurement packages Through this internship, I have gained real-world insight into the procurement aspect of the supply chain management industry I have been able to apply my academic experience to my internship, and I have also gained knowledge through my internship that applies to my academics as well

Congratulations to our outstanding College of Business students that were awarded the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence for the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semester.
Leadership isn’t about where you come from, it’s about how far your perspective can reach
When I first stepped onto campus at Southeastern Louisiana University,
Thousands of miles away from my home in Nepal, I had no idea how deeply this journey would shape not only my education but also my leadership identity. As an international student, every step was new, navigating a different academic system, adapting to cultural norms, and learning to speak up in a room where I was often the only one who looked or sounded like me But what began as a challenge turned into one of my greatest strengths: a global perspective rooted in empathy, adaptability, and cross-cultural understanding
Embracing Differences in Leadership: Serving as President of the Nepalese Student Association and Chair of the Campus Activities Board gave me more than just lines on a resume. It gave me lessons in diplomacy, listening, and leading inclusively.
According to a Harvard Business Review study, teams with members from diverse backgrounds outperform their peers by up to 35% in terms of innovation and decisionmaking That statistic wasn’t just a theory in my experience; it was real Whether I was collaborating with multicultural student groups or facilitating team discussions, I found that different perspectives led to better ideas, richer discussions, and more thoughtful outcomes
I learned that good leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room; it's about creating space for others to speak It's about recognizing that diversity isn’t just a checkbox; it’s a resource.
Resilience Is a Skill and a Strategy
Being far from home taught me to problemsolve without a safety net. I had to figure things out on my own, ask for help when I needed it, and adapt quickly These are the very same qualities that make strong leaders: initiative, resilience, and resourcefulness
“As
an international student, I faced unfamiliar systems, cultural differences, and new responsibilities. But through it all, I discovered the power of empathy, adaptability, and global thinking”
The Institute for the Future found that adaptability and resilience are among the top 10 skills needed for the workforce of 2030 My experience as an international student gave me a head start. I brought those skills into every role I took on, whether organizing wellness events, troubleshooting student requests at the library, or mentoring new board members
A Global Perspective in a Local Role
Research from McKinsey & Company shows that companies in the top quartile for ethnic and cultural diversity are 36% more likely to have above-average profitability. Even in student organizations, I saw the real-world version of that stat When you bring together people with varied lived experiences, you don’t just get different voices, you get stronger outcomes.
be.
Q: Is there a moment from your trip you’ll never forget?
A: Having to wear a cultural dress and do a dance
Q: What advice would you give to other students considering study abroad?
A: Don’t stress over traveling to another country. worry more about the experiences you are going to have while you are there.
Q: What do you wish you had known before going?
A: More Spanish
Q: If you could describe your study abroad experience in one word, what would it be?
A: Unforgettable
Q: Would you do it again?
A: Yes, absolutely

The month continued with guest speakers, Lunch and Learn events, mock interviews, and resume review sessions Guests included Jackie Duvieilh (Fleur Des La Imports), College of Business Alumni, Olivia Graziano (Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce), Shane Purvis (Bonvenue Bank), and more Each shared their expertise on topics ranging from LinkedIn strategies to maintaining a positive mindset during a job search, and networking tips for all personality types
This month-long focus on career development is just one of the many ways the College of Business prepares students for success in today’s dynamic workforce
In February, the College of Business proudly hosted its inaugural Sophomore Success Summit, a pivotal event designed not only to equip our second-year students with critical career readiness skills and information, but also to proactively address the common "sophomore slump " This is a crucial period when students often question the value of college and may even consider withdrawing. Spearheaded by Dr. Tonya Crombie, Director of Leadership and Professional Advancement programs, and generously sponsored by Cleco, this summit brought sophomores together on a Friday morning when there were no classes – a testament to their enthusiasm and dedication – for an enriching day of professional development and engagement
The summit featured a dynamic agenda, commencing with a welcome from Joey Stevens, Director for Corporate Development & Renewables at Cleco, underscoring the vital partnership between academia and industry. Students gained invaluable insights from our Career Services team, led by Director Craig Marinello, and received critical data on growing regional industries from Fiona James of the Louisiana Office of Workforce Development and Marco TejadaKemp of GNO, Inc A highlight of the day included engaging major breakout sessions, where College of Business alumni and faculty shared career options and emphasized the critical role of internships These sessions were specifically designed to re-energize students and reaffirm the tangible value of their academic path
A key focus of the summit was fostering meaningful connections, which are vital in combating feelings of isolation during the sophomore year Students actively participated in a networking scavenger hunt and enjoyed a networking lunch with presenters, faculty, professionals, and alumni, building a stronger sense of belonging
The impact of the Sophomore Success Summit was immediate and profound, as reflected in our anonymous student surveys When asked what they had gotten out of the day, most students commented on the friends and connections they formed
"I learned a lot about how to get where I want to go, and even where I want to go. I also got to meet a lot of students on the same path I am."
"I love connecting with all of the amazing accounting professionals! They taught me communication skills and taught me how to connect with others around me."
“I loved the breakout discussion with my major. I also loved hearing about internships, and just seeing how much the coordinators actually care.
The overwhelming positive feedback underscores the summit's success in providing practical career guidance, fostering valuable connections, and reinforcing a sense of community among our students, ultimately helping them overcome potential challenges during their sophomore year The Sophomore Success Summit exemplifies the College of Business's commitment to preparing career-ready graduates and ensuring their continued success and retention We extend our deepest gratitude to Cleco, our alumni, and all partners who made this impactful event possible We look forward to building on this success by offering additional cohort-specific programming next year
As part of its commitment to career readiness, the College of Business hosted its 3rd Annual Etiquette and Networking Dinner on February 20, 2025, in the Student Union Ballroom, culminating a month of events focused on preparing students for life after graduation

This intentional format sets the event apart from traditional career fairs and reflects the College’s dedication to high-impact, outcome-driven experiences
Keynote speaker Jamila Brown, a seasoned executive, podcaster, and basketball coach, shared her “triangle offense model of networking,” offering practical insights that resonated with both students and employers
The event raised over $6,000 to support student travel to regional and national conferences, expanding access to professional development and leadership opportunities We extend our sincere thanks to all the employers and sponsors who helped make this event a success

The college of business was so tight knit and close that it felt more like family than it was a classroom, each and every teacher I had made me feel like I was in the right place for college. The sales program really shaped me into the person I am today! I owe all of my success in my career to the college of business and the professors who treated me like I wasn’t just a number.

I’ll forever be thankful for the College of Business. The small class sizes and professors who genuinely cared shaped me into the person and specifically, the professional, that I am today!

Occupation: Marketing Assistant
The College of Business opened me to the world of creativity in the business world. I had no idea I could use my storytelling and artistic skills in a business environment until I was introduced to Marketing. After taking the social media class with Dr. Kemp I fell in love with Marketing. Switching from graphic design to marketing was the best decision I’ve made in my college career as it opened the door to so many more opportunities.

During my undergrad program, I really rushed it and did not give the experience a chance. When I went back for the MBA program, I decided to make the most of it! I had the greatest experience for my Masters! Led two student organizations, made a ton of friends and had the best time of my life.

I absolutely loved my time at the College of Business. It was one of the most formative and rewarding experiences of my life. The faculty, especially my accounting professors, were outstanding — incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and truly invested in our success. Their teaching not only helped me build a strong foundation in accounting, but also prepared me with real-world skills and confidence that I still carry with me today. I’m proud to be an alum and grateful for everything I gained during my time there.

As we celebrate Southeastern’s centennial, the College of Business marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. For decades, the yellow brick exterior stood as a symbol of tradition, grounding generations of students and faculty. This year, sleek glass windows replaced the front and back brick, opening our building to light, energy, and new possibilities. But don’t worry, the side brick remains, a lasting link to our history. The transformation reflects more than a design change; it honors our past while embracing a future defined by progress, innovation, and growth.
