RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
In Galilee to Jerusalem, pupils study the Transfiguration and reflect on how this moment reveals Jesus’ divine nature and strengthens the disciples’ understanding of who He truly is. Pupils also study the Gospel of John in depth, focusing on the signs that reveal Jesus’ identity and mission. They explore selected miracles as signs that point beyond the action itself to deeper truths about Jesus as the source of life, light, and hope. As part of this branch, pupils also explore how the Sacraments continue Jesus’ work in the world today, supporting Christians as they respond to His call to faith, service, and commitment. In Year 6, pupils explore the events of Holy Week in depth as they follow Jesus’ journey to the cross. They study key Gospel passages, including the anointing at Bethany, the washing of the disciples’ feet, Jesus before Pilate, and the Crucifixion. They learn about Holy Thursday and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, reflecting on how Jesus’ actions at the Last Supper reveal the importance of service and love. Pupils study the Stations of the Cross and consider how this form of prayer helps Christians reflect on Jesus’ suffering and compassion. As the branch continues, pupils explore the Resurrection as the central belief of the Christian faith. They learn how Easter celebrates Jesus rising from the dead and the promise of new life.
RSHE We will be covering a range of topics in our RSHE lessons this term. These include body image, 'funny' feelings, emotional changes and what we see online. We will discuss the pressures faced by young people. These issues will be investigated in a range of different ways including class discussions, written work and practical activities. The children will have the opportunity to reflect, discuss and ask questions in a safe and trusted environment. We will also be taking part in a Spelthorne Junior Citizenship event where the children will be provided with life skills that will enable them to keep themselves and others safe. As children start to become more independent they are often expected to cope increasingly on their own and deal with changes in their lives, such as a move to secondary school. The children’s awareness of threats and dangers, will be raised in a fun and interactive way.
ENGLISH In our English lessons, we will be writing in a range of different genres including persuasive pieces, letter writing, non-chronological reports and narratives. Our shared text in the Spring term will be ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar and we will use this text to support our narrative writing. The children will also be developing their comprehension, grammar and punctuation skills using a variety of texts and extracts. The children are encouraged to read as widely as they possibly can as this will have a positive impact on both their comprehension and written work.
MATHS Within our maths lessons, the children will have the opportunity to refine their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills, as we learn about shape, ratio and algebra. There will also be a focus on statistics. ln addition, the children will continue to enhance their arithmetic and mental maths skills.
SCIENCE During the first half of the Spring term, we will be learning about living things and their habitats. The children will investigate how living things can be classified based on their characteristics. The children will also learn about microorganisms and how some can be helpful and others harmful. We will research Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist and consider the impact his work has had on our lives. After half term, our lessons will focus on electricity. The children will learn how to both draw and create a circuit and they will explore the effect on the circuit as they change it or add to it.
HISTORY We will continue to learn about World War Two in the first half of the Spring Term. We will research some significant characters of World War Two such as Anne Frank, Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. The children will find out what it was like to be an evacuee in World War Two and how Britain protected itself during the Blitz. We will learn about the disillusion of the Empire and the legacy of World War Two.
GEOGRAPHY In the second half of the Spring term, we will be learning about earth movement and tectonic plates. The children will learn how our current balance of ocean and land evolved over time. They will also learn about continents and how they continue to drift and the consequences of this.
ART/DT In Art we will be focusing on the key skill, 'drawing'. The children will learn to make artistic choices regarding the use of line, shape, patterns, colour, tone and space. They will also learn to use different techniques for different purposes within their own work, demonstrating an understanding of what works well and why. There will be a focus on movement and the children will study art produced during the Renaissance. Our focus artist is Leonardo da Vinci. In Design and Technology, our topic is ‘Frame Structures’. Through this unit of work, we will develop, model, and communicate ideas through discussion on how to create an Anderson shelter. We will use annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams and finally create our model. We will apply our knowledge of materials in order to understand how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce 3D frameworks.
MUSIC Within our music lessons, the children will focus on remixing and sampling. The pupils will learn to arrange and mix their own composition in a Grime style using YuStudio. They will create drum beats, melodies and basslines and build chords and melodies based on a chosen musical key and scale. After half term, the pupils will focus on musical styles that connect us. When we sing, dance and play music we all share ideas that help to bring us together. The pupils will explore how different styles of music have developed from different social themes.
P.E. This term, indoor PE, will be focusing on static balances, coordination and floor work. Our outdoor PE sessions in the first half of term will focus on the rules and skills of hockey. The children will learn how to receive and dribble a hockey ball under control and improve their understanding of how to create space to receive a ball. Pupils will also continue to develop their Orienteering and Outdoor Adventurous Activity skills. This will be followed in the second half term by crosscountry and football. The children will use ABC (agility, balance, coordination) techniques to keep control of a ball.
MFL In our Spanish lessons, the children will continue to learn numbers from 1–100, along with action words and clothing vocabulary in Spanish. They will practise using these topics to describe what they are doing, what they are wearing, and to work confidently with larger numbers. Through engaging activities and spoken practice, pupils will build on their existing knowledge and develop greater fluency and confidence in Spanish.
COMPUTING Throughout this term in computing we will continue to work on online safety. The children will look at how to remix and sample music. The pupils will create an original melody using an online music-making programme (YuStudio). They will experiment with adding drumbeats and baselines to tracks to create an underscore to their music story. They will be able to write and record a story to be used alongside the melody that they have created and can experiment with remixing and adding sound effects using the online music-making programme. This will be followed by looking at digital galleries and 3D modelling. The pupils will recognise that you can work in three dimensions on a computer. They will be able to add, view and move 3D shapes in a project. They will learn to modify 3D objects by resizing, lifting / lowering and recolouring.
