SPELLINGS

At our school, we believe that confident and accurate spelling is an essential foundation for effective communication. Spelling supports children in becoming fluent writers, enabling them to express their ideas clearly and with independence.

Through a structured and systematic approach, we help pupils understand how words are constructed, recognise patterns, and apply spelling rules across the curriculum.

SPELLINGS

Our spelling curriculum is designed to:

• Build strong phonics knowledge and link sounds to written patterns.

• Develop understanding of spelling rules, prefixes, suffixes, and word origins.

• Expand vocabulary, supporting reading comprehension and expressive writing.

• Promote accuracy and confidence in written work across all subjects.

• Encourage independence, through strategies such as segmenting, mnemonics, and the use of personal spelling logs.

We provide regular opportunities for children to practise and apply their spelling skills in meaningful contexts. By fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, we aim to develop enthusiastic and capable writers who take pride in their work and communicate with clarity.

RESOURCES

At Our Lady of the Rosary School, we have established resources that work well and support our children’s learning and progression.

EYFS – Nelly is used to develop language skills in our youngest children.

EYFS – Year 2 - Little Wandle Spelling Scheme is used within these classes. Little Wandle Spelling is a programme designed to provide a seamless link from the main Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme to learning spelling in Year 2. Little Wandle Spelling aims to build on children’s knowledge of the alphabetic code and teaches them to spell with confidence.

Years 3-6 - No Nonsense Spelling Scheme is used. This is a comprehensive program, aligned with the National Curriculum. We use this scheme in a structured way where teachers adopt a "little-but-often" approach to teaching spelling rules, patterns, statutory words, and exceptions through daily lessons, engaging activities (visual, auditory), and clear progression.
