Now that school is back in session and kids are beginning to settle in with their new teacher(s), parents will soon receive notices about open houses. While most kids generally dread these events that bring their teachers and parents face-to-face, parents should embrace this opportunity.
An open house is your chance to learn of the teachers’ expectations for her students and find out what outcomes you should expect as a parent. Remember, though, this meeting is not meant to be a one-way line of communication – you should feel comfortable sharing with the teacher your expectations as well – things such as, how you expect little Johnny or Suzy to come to class prepared to listen and do his or her work with minimal socializing with classmates. Above all, make sure the teacher knows that you care about your child’s education and progress.
