AA FEW MONTHS AGO, I was gifted a new dress. Soft white and grey, I fell in love with the playful pattern and had been waiting for an occasion to wear it. The opportunity came while working on this issue.

Lionheart Home Collection’s latest feature takes us to Bois Blanc Island (page 28). The day of the photoshoot brought perfect weather: clear skies, bright sun and a light breeze. I threw a cream blazer overtop and arrived on the island to discover my outfit perfectly coordinated with both the home and its designer, Richard Pursel.

Whether it was the island setting or the relaxed décor, the home delivered everything I love about summer: bright spaces, breezy comfort and an atmosphere that’s relaxed and carefree. Graphic wallpaper, organic finishes and thoughtfully mixed furnishings create a casual elegance perfectly suited to summer living.

In LaSalle, designer Sonja Bridgen’s family home (page 48) captures a similar warm feel. Though newly built, it is thoughtfully curated with natural materials, layered finishes and carefully considered details. Both homes embrace a relaxed approach that’s comfortable, personal and designed to be lived in.

Just as summer changes the way we dress, it also changes the way we live at home. Routines soften, daylight lingers and there’s a certain ease that settles into everyday life. This season, I’m planning to keep the windows open and stay outside as much as possible.

In an era dominated by rapid furniture turnover and trend-chasing, slow decorating is emerging as a thoughtful, intentional alternative. This approach uses personal choices to transform your home into an authentic, evolving reflection of you and your family.

If you are looking to create an interior that stands out in the sea of sameness, here are some elements of the slow decorating philosophy you can adopt.

FLEX YOUR PATIENCE

Instant gratification and perfectly styled interiors have become the norm. Opting out of these online trends and turning to slow decorating can ease the stress of having an Instagram-ready space.

Accept that good things take time. Living in a space reveals what it truly needs and helps you better understand its energy. Ask yourself: What is missing? How do you need the space to function? What mood do you want to evoke?

When you set limits and decide what you’re willing to wait for, it can reduce impulse buying (and therefore less regret and dissatisfaction). It can also save money and lessen landfill waste. Of course, you cannot wait for everything, but consider

creating a plan and then budget accordingly. Once you adopt a slow decorating approach, use social media with intention. Instead of replicating popular looks, study what draws your attention. Is it scale, lighting, texture or balance? Gather design knowledge for your own journey instead of mimicking popular aesthetics.

WORK IN PROGRESS

It’s okay to live in an unfinished space for a while. Continually remind yourself that taking time will likely lead to greater satisfaction. Buying everything at once often creates interiors that feel contrived. Experimenting teaches you what works and what doesn’t. Use what you have until you find the right piece. Embrace the bare walls until you find art that resonates. Save up for that hand-blocked wallcovering you adore, and embark on a hunt for the perfect vintage rug that will last a lifetime. Contrary to what the online world portrays, you do not need to have a perfect space immediately, even in a new home.

FIND SOUL AND PERSONALITY

Slow decorating encourages you to define your unique style. Select pieces you truly cherish to enliven your home. Choosing an item just because it pairs well with something can leave a space feeling forced. When hunting for furniture and making

material selections, think about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, who encourages you to only keep items that “spark joy.” If it’s not an immediate yes, move on.

If you’re unsure where to start, begin with one room or even just a corner. Ask yourself what colours, moods or objects make you feel at home. Consider how the space can support your lifestyle. Try rearranging, repainting or reusing what you have. As you experiment, your personal style will reveal itself, and your confidence will grow.

FOCUS ON FOREVER

This approach invites us to invest time and effort in finding pieces that hold personal significance. Whether family heirlooms, travel souvenirs or handcrafted items from local artisans, these cherished pieces will create a space that feels authentic to you. A rustic galette of handmade pastry layered with ricotta, chives and basil, topped with heirloom tomatoes. Baked until golden, it combines creamy cheese, fresh herbs and the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4 Servings

1½ cups all-purpose flour

½ tsp salt

10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed

4-5 Tbsp ice water

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives

1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil

2 egg yolks

Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper

2-3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form, and the butter pieces are no larger than small peas. Add ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Form into a round disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough out on a lightly-floured surface into a 10- to 12-inch circle, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix ricotta, chives, basil, 1 egg yolk and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pastry, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the ricotta. Fold the pastry edges over the filling to form a rustic crust. Whisk the remaining egg yolk and brush over the pastry.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the tomatoes are softened. Cool slightly before slicing and serving. OH

Gardening teaches patience and humility. Gardeners are never fully in control – weather, soil conditions and natural cycles all play their part. Henry David Thoreau, the 19th-century naturalist, once wrote, “Resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” This surrender will foster resilience, acceptance and a deeper respect for nature’s rhythms.

The colour green, one of my favourite shades, is naturally soothing to the eyes and nervous system. Fragrant plants like lavender can calm the body, and the scent of rosemary may help improve memory.

Nature also reveals patterns that can resonate deeply. The Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the arrangements of seeds in sunflowers and in the spirals of pine cones, reflects an inherent order and beauty in the natural world. Our brains recognize and respond positively to these patterns, adding to the quiet joy we feel while connected to nature.

At its core, gardening reminds me of something essential: growth takes time. There’s real beauty in slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world and participating in the cycles of life. It’s healthy to remember that just outside our doors, the garden offers not only nourishment for the body but healing for the mind and spirit. OH

wWhen you’re passionate about interior design, moving to a new home is like stepping up to a blank canvas. Each room presents an opportunity to explore fresh ideas and experiment with style.

This homeowner fell in love with the relaxed pace of life on Bois Blanc Island. But after a few years of townhouse living, she and her husband found themselves craving more space. Their search led them to a nearby one-storey house. Originally built as a model home, the house offered quality construction and plenty of potential.

The kitchen is designed for family gatherings and year-round entertaining. The dark wood floor and island add warmth and contrast against the cabinets, which are finished in Benjamin Moore Dove Wing. Transforming the model home required the help of a designer who understood the homeowner’s style. She turned to Richard Pursel, owner of Lionheart Home Collection – a company that offers both a retail store and custom design services. Since meeting, she and Richard have collaborated on interior projects for nearly two decades.

“We’re very fortunate to have such awesome repeat clients,” Richard says. “This homeowner found us at our first retail location and I’ve worked on every one of her homes.” Richard has helped guide her evolving style for each new chapter. “She’s always doing something with her home because she likes to keep changing and refining things.”

The island setting inspired a subtle lakehouse influence, which embraces a palette of greys and whites that complements the existing countertops, flooring and cabinetry. A variety of patterns and natural textures creates a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, while the neutral tones allow new pieces to be added without disrupting the overall feel of the home. Described as a casual island retreat, the home features durable materials and approachable furnishings that keep it feeling comfortable and relaxing.

To bring character to the plain interiors, Richard introduced millwork, wainscotting and shiplap. Horizontal and vertical applications create subtle variation from room to room while maintaining continuity. “I like repetition because it creates cohesion,” Richard explains. “You can use the same element in different ways throughout the home to keep it interesting.” Continued on page 32

In the dining area, the focal point is a hand-crafted wooden beaded chandelier. The space also features comfortable barrel chairs and a cerused oak pedestal table. A classic hand-knotted wool-and-silk rug adds a touch of tradition.

Rather than undertake major renovations, Richard layered in thoughtful details to transform builder-basic spaces. In the powder room, the existing cabinetry and light fixture remained untouched. Horizontal shiplap visually widens the compact room, while a whimsical grey wallpaper adds contrast. Its delicate bird pattern introduces softness and movement while nodding to the lakehouse theme.

Wallpaper is a defining feature in this house and appears in spaces like the bathrooms, guest bedroom and laundry area. “Some people have an aversion to wall coverings, but this client embraces them,” Richard tells us. “We have always encouraged wallpaper in our designs because it adds another dimension to counteract plain painted drywall.”

The wall coverings vary from room to room, but the repetition of warm grey tones creates continuity throughout the main floor. In the guest bedroom, grasscloth is paired with a botanical wallpaper to create a soft, casual atmosphere. The bathrooms feature more dramatic patterns with painterly textures and geometric designs. “Bathrooms are great spaces to go a little bolder,” Richard says of the pattern choices. “You’re not spending tons of time in them, so you can have a little more fun with pattern and texture.” Continued on page 34

Wallpaper also becomes an artistic focal point when paired with sculptural accessories. One of the most striking moments appears in a narrow alcove outside the powder room. Too small for furniture, the niche lacked purpose and presence. Richard used the homeowner’s love of boating and fishing as inspiration and chose a textured grey pattern reminiscent of gentle waves. Metallic silver-leaf fish sculptures are mounted against the backdrop, and uplighting in the floor adds drama in the evenings. Once overlooked, the alcove now stands out as a sculptural art niche that brings personality and dimension to the hallway.

The homeowner frequently introduces new elements into the home, but existing pieces are often repurposed rather than replaced. Accent chairs originally used in a bedroom were reimagined as living room seating, where their soft grey upholstery complements the

neutral palette. “All the pieces she buys are high quality,” Richard explains. “This pair of chairs is about 20 years old, and they still work really well when reimagined in the current living space. By keeping the palette somewhat neutral, she can move things from room to room.” Nailhead detailing is echoed in a nearby lounge chair, bridging any possible gap between the old and new furnishings. A rustic wood coffee table reinforces the home’s relaxed lakehouse atmosphere, while the same organic texture carries into a statement chandelier above the adjacent dining area.

Richard describes this home as an ongoing process rather than a finished project.

“Evolution is her strong point,” he says of his longtime client. “Everything changes subtly over time.” Artwork is regularly refreshed, accessories are moved from room to room and furnishings continue to find new purpose. The result is a home that never feels static, but is instead shaped gradually over time through thoughtful collaboration and shared creativity. Cheers to the future evolution of this happy home! OH

DESIGNING THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR KITCHEN

There’s something satisfying about cooking al fresco. The doors are open, music drifts outside, and family and friends gather near the grill to watch and lend a hand. But the modern outdoor kitchen has become more than a grill against a wall. Outdoor prep kitchens are in demand – spaces that work as hard as the ones indoors, just with better air and a superior view.

COOKING OUTDOORS

An outdoor prep area is no longer a strip of counter beside the barbecue. It should be a place to chop vegetables, rinse greens, season meat and plate dishes without needing to run back inside. When planned properly, it feels like a natural extension of the house, not a satellite station you tolerate for a few summer weekends. Start with clear zones. Think about how you move in your indoor kitchen and replicate that logic outside. You’ll want generous counter space dedicated to prep, a comfortable place to chop and a sink for rinsing produce or washing hands. It’s all about keeping the process efficient and contained.

SPACE, FUNCTION & FORM

Orientation matters. Whenever possible, position the prep area beside the grill, facing guests or the garden. Cooking outdoors should feel social. Leave enough room to move safely between spaces and keep walkways clear so guests can circulate without crossing through your work zone. If space allows, add a secondary surface for plating. Separating raw prep from finished dishes is practical and makes entertaining feel far less chaotic. And most importantly, resist the urge to fill every surface. A few well-chosen tools and serving pieces left out with intention will feel curated rather than cluttered.

“That’s where planning becomes really important.”

Working closely with the homeowners, Ryan utilized planning software to develop detailed layouts that balance functionality, flow and space for entertaining. Lakeshore Landscaping coordinated specialized trades throughout the project while handling many elements in-house. The team also assisted with material selections to ensure each finish complemented the others.

HARDSCAPING

Clean lines and thoughtful craftsmanship define the hardscaping throughout. Large-format pavers create distinct zones, while contrasting materials anchor spaces such as the fire pit area. Integrated lighting adds warmth and ambience after dark. Ryan carefully mapped the paver layout in advance to ensure clean, uninterrupted lines were formed. “We plotted the fire pit out so there’s no sliver cuts of pavers,” he says. “It’s all those little details that make the difference.”

LANDSCAPING

Carefully selected landscaping softens the structured hardscaping and ties the entire space together. Ryan incorporated compact plant varieties, ornamental grasses, white hydrangeas and allium to add texture and colour. A Lavender Twist redbud was strategically placed near the walkway to create privacy while maintaining the yard’s open feel. “We chose varieties that don’t get too big and are easy to maintain,” Ryan explains. Additional trees and greenery around the pool reinforce the relaxed atmosphere. OH

DDesigned as a family retreat and lasting legacy, this four-bedroom home in LaSalle showcases designer Sonja Bridgen’s creative vision.

“My home is a living manifesto of my design philosophy, offering clients a tangible vision of my approach to enduring, layered design,” she explains. After years of consulting, Sonja embarked on a new chapter, launching Sonja Bridgen Design. She is pleased to present this elegant showpiece as her debut project, reflecting her belief in beauty, functionality and legacy.

Sonja and her husband considered renovating their previous home, but decided building made more sense. “We wanted to create something with longevity for our family and two young daughters – something to grow with and have room to entertain friends and family,” she recalls. Continued on page 50

They found a property in LaSalle’s exclusive Legacy Grove community, and Sonja assembled a team of highly regarded professionals. Residential designer Phil Fernandes of Philip Fernandes Designs Inc. designed the home’s exterior and layout, while Gino Piccioni, president of Timberland Homes, built the home. “It was a dream come true working with them,” says Sonja. She appreciated Phil and Gino’s professionalism, attention to detail and genuine commitment to quality. “Every step of the process felt thoughtfully managed, and we collaborated seamlessly from design to build.”

Sonja’s vision encouraged Phil toward a modern yet timeless direction. “Safe made way for bold,” Phil recalls. “Sonja had many design elements she wanted to introduce and our job was to arrange the home in a way that would feel natural and look beautiful.” Features like a sunken living room, sculptural staircase, steep cathedral ceiling in the primary bedroom and Tudor-inspired exterior all contribute to the home’s distinct identity.

OPPOSITE: Sonja’s design philosophy centres on creating interiors that feel elevated yet livable. This approach is reflected throughout the home’s main floor. Here, warm cabinetry, organic materials and soft tones balance the home’s crisp lines. A hidden walk-in pantry is located through doors next to the wall ovens.

Gino was impressed with Sonja’s design acumen and the fresh look her creativity brought to Legacy Grove. “Sonja brought new ideas to the table on a daily basis. The result is a warm family home that is also unique and design-driven,” he says.

The distinctive exterior is defined by an off-centre chimney, a peaked roofline, bold black accents and refined stone detailing. Gino describes the structure as strong, with a mix of materials that balance durability and warmth. “It’s a great combination of brick, stucco and stone that’s sturdy but soft-looking,” he says. The custom curved wood french door clad in black aluminum was sourced at Rocksolid Windows & Doors.

The foyer showcases custom stone tilework that complements a warm stainedoak floor. The home’s design is minimalist yet organic and inviting. “Every detail was considered and reconsidered a hundred times!” Sonja recalls. “I wanted to build an ethos of quality over quantity with a balance of vintage and new,” she adds. To achieve this, Sonja included elements like plaster, natural stone and vintage lighting and décor.

A stunning waterfall island, clad in exquisite Calacatta Viola marble, makes a bold statement in the kitchen. “This piece was chosen before the build started, and much of our home’s design plays off this feature,” says Sonja. Supplied by Cava Surfaces and fabricated by Roma Tile, this marble features a creamy white base with sweeping veins of violet and burgundy.

The island features an integrated sink paired with unlacquered brass taps by Waterworks. Recessed track lighting and push-to-open Miele appliances from Reis Appliance maintain a sleek, minimalist aesthetic. Cunningham Sheet Metal (Windsor) Ltd. crafted the unique sheet metal backsplash, while Frank Cremasco Fine Cabinetry designed the ash-stained cabinets. A hidden pantry provides extra storage and room for food preparation.

A sunken living room was a must-have design element incorporated early in the space planning. “The design makes it feel like a separate space without any physical barriers,” explains Sonja. The offset placement of the gas fireplace, provided by Forest Glade Fireplaces, creates a striking focal point; its sleek silhouette draws the eye. Sonja incorporated marble throughout the home, from a Calacatta Viola clamshell sink in the powder room to seat tops in the mudroom and counters in the pantry.

A custom metal handrail, also fabricated by Cunningham Sheet Metal, wraps the off-white plaster staircase leading to the upper level. “The stairwell is the showstopper,” says Gino. “It’s contemporary and looks like something you’d see in an art gallery.” Finished in the same soft white as the walls, the staircase is bathed in natural light from large landing windows by Martindale Windows & Doors Inc. “The metal handrail plays off the metal backsplash in the kitchen and wrapped fireplace in the dining room,” says Sonja.

Upstairs, four bedrooms and five baths provide plenty of space for Sonja and her family. In the primary suite, peaked ceilings lend a touch of drama while swagged pendant lighting casts a soft glow. Floating cabinetry and curated furnishings from Muskoka Living add beauty and functionality to the space. ANR Concrete Studio crafted the bespoke microcement shower with Riobel hardware from EMCO Corporation. Dark-stained ash cabinetry is echoed in the kitchen and mudroom selections. The vanity countertop is Calacatta Borghini marble, while one-by-one-inch marble tiles cover the heated floor. Textured, smoked-glass panes divide the water closet from the shower. Outside, the family enjoys a bespoke backyard pool, gardens and landscapes created and installed by Lakeshore Landscaping

For Sonja, this project is more than just a home. “It’s the debut of detailed offerings under my design philosophy. The result is a space that exudes warmth and sophistication through harmonious interplay of form, purpose and nature,” she explains. “It’s representative of my personal style, and I am truly proud of the execution and the product.” OH

HOW TO MAKE A SUMMER SALAD DRESSING

Summer is here, and while salads are delicious all year round, they’re especially good during spring and summer. Produce is fresh and local this time of year, and salads are a perfect hot-weather food.

If you find salads boring or not super filling, it’s likely you’re not making them to their fullest potential. A salad shouldn’t be all lettuce and no flavour. Salad dressings should add flavour without overpowering the salad. You want to be able to taste the greens and other ingredients. The purpose of the dressing is not to hide those flavours but to balance and enhance them.

VINAIGRETTES

Vinaigrettes are one of the most popular types of salad dressings. They contain oil, acid and a flavour booster. The standard ratio is three parts oil to one part acid, but this may vary depending on your taste preferences or the type of oil you’re using. If you remember from high school science class, oil and vinegar don’t mix and will separate when left to sit. By shaking or stirring them, you create a temporary emulsion. Or you can add an emulsifying ingredient like Dijon mustard, honey, tahini or egg yolks, which will prevent the oil and acid from separating.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A DELICIOUS SALAD DRESSING:

OIL – Use any oil you like, but since it’s the base, choose a high-quality oil with good flavour. Olive oil is the most common – it’s flavourful without being overpowering. You can also use avocado oil, grapeseed oil, flaxseed oil or walnut oil.

ACID – Options include lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, white balsamic vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, lime juice, orange juice and grapefruit juice. Use what makes the most sense for the salad and the season.

FLAVOUR BOOSTERS – These are what make your salad stand out! Mix and match different ingredients to create unique flavour combinations. Just note that if you’re adding herbs, spices, shallots, ginger or garlic, be sure to mince, chop very finely or blend your dressing. This prevents someone from eating a chunk of garlic while enjoying their salad. Flavour boosters to try include garlic, fresh or dried herbs and spices, maple syrup, soy sauce, fresh ginger, miso paste, tahini, nutritional yeast, shallots, red chilli flakes, Dijon mustard and sesame oil. Sesame oil is technically an oil, but the flavour is strong, and you only need a small amount. You wouldn’t want to use this as your sole oil in a dressing.

HELPFUL TIPS

Be sure to taste your dressing before committing it to your salad. Does it need more acid? Sweetness? Something else? Make the dressing in a mason jar. Just shake to combine your ingredients, then easily store extra in the fridge.

Always shake or stir your dressing before drizzling it on your salad, even if you’ve added an emulsifier.

If you use dried herbs or spices, you’ll need less than if you use fresh. Their flavour is very concentrated. OH

HOW-TO

Using a soft toothbrush, gently remove any debris from your shell, sand dollar or starfish. Place seaside treasures in a container, cover with water and add two tablespoons of bleach. Leave items submerged until they whiten. If using a starfish, remove after 10 minutes as its colour won’t change much. Remove and let items dry completely.

Decide where you want to position the shell, starfish or sand dollar on the flat surface of the night light. Lift and apply hot glue to the edges that will contact the surface. Place, press and hold while removing any excess glue.

Once adhered, let the glue dry completely. Plug the light into the electrical socket and enjoy. OH

Did you know that there are over 800 species of native ground and twig nesting bees in Canada? Solitary bees like mason bees and leafcutter bees are unsung heroes of pollination. A single mason bee can pollinate as many flowers as 100 honeybees. They mostly do not live in social structures; instead, they forage for nectar and pollinate independently. These gentle insects rarely sting and pose no threat to children or pets, making them ideal garden companions.

YOU DON’T NEED A LARGE PROPERTY OR SPECIAL EQUIPMENT TO WELCOME SOLITARY BEES. HERE ARE SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN A HAVEN:

We are lucky to live in areas where orchards and wildflowers flourish. Unlike honeybees, solitary bees don’t live in hives or produce honey. Instead, they nest alone in small cavities and quietly go about their work, pollinating plants with remarkable efficiency. Creating a bee-friendly home environment is simple, lowmaintenance and deeply rewarding.

INSTALL BEE BRICKS OR BEE HOTELS

These structures mimic natural nesting sites. Bee bricks can be built into garden walls or placed on patios, while bee hotels – wooden frames filled with hollow tubes – can be mounted on fences or sheds. Some are specifically designed for Ontario native bees, with different-sized holes for the various bees they host. Small holes attract small carpenter bees; medium and large holes attract mason bees and leafcutter bees. Whichever you decide on, make sure to position them in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally facing southeast.

GROW NATIVE PLANTS

Choose a mix of flowering plants that bloom from early spring (spring bulbs) to late fall. Try using locally adapted native wildflowers like wild bergamot, black-eyed Susan and goldenrod, or old-fashioned heirloom varieties. These flowers produce more nectar and pollen throughout the season than modern hybrids. Planting in clumps of five or six of the same kind is beneficial for the bees, too.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOWERS

Double flowers don’t have the same amount of nectar as single-petalled plants. Flowers in bright white, yellow, blue or ultraviolet colours are best for attracting bees. Nectar guides are also important features on the flowers that lure bees. Examples include plants like lupines and irises, which have evolved colours to suit bee vision. The shape of the flower also matters. Shallow, tubular plants (such as turtleheads, Chelone obliqua) or those with a landing platform are best. Avoid pesticides: even organic sprays can harm bees. Opt for natural pest control methods and encourage biodiversity to keep your garden balanced.

PROVIDE MUD AND LEAVES

Leafcutter bees snip leaves from lilacs, redbuds and roses to line their nests, while mason bees use mud. Sunny, flat and bare ground areas are what most nesting female bees need to raise their young.

KEEP IT MESSY

Resist the urge to over-tidy. Dead stems, fallen logs and leaf litter provide nesting and overwintering spots. Creating habitat for our native bees, specifically solitary bees, is as important as creating habitat for our birds, caterpillars and butterflies.

THE

SURGE OF SOLO BUYERS

Single women appear to be buying more homes than single men across North America. In Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported in 2016 that 61 per cent of first-time and repeat home buyers in Canada were female.

In the U.S., the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers reports that 20 per cent of home buyers in 2024 were single women, outnumbering single male buyers, who accounted for eight per cent of the market.

Gabriela Anaya, a real estate agent at Engel & Völkers, is seeing this trend in Ottawa.

“A notable number of my clients are single women purchasing on their own,” says Gabriela. “These buyers are educated, thoughtful and intentional about putting down roots in their new city.”

Sarah Cameron, Ottawa real estate agent at Royal LePage, is seeing the same thing.

“In my own business, we’re seeing more

and more young women in their mid-to-late 20s stepping into homeownership, and I absolutely love it,” says Sarah, who attributes this to a combination of social and financial shifts. “They’re not waiting for a partner to make a move.”

When she asks her younger female clients how they’re able to start the home-buying process early and with independence, they credit their success to budgeting wisely.

“It really highlights something powerful: small, consistent choices add up. What you focus on expands – and when homeownership is the goal, their habits tend to align with it,” says Sarah.

As far as motivational trends go, Gabriela has found that they depend on the

individual. Some single women are decisive, while others are more cautious and take time to refine their vision.

“What I consistently see, just as I do with couples and solo men, is a focus on convenience, long-term value and finding a home that truly fits their lifestyle,” she explains.

As high market prices are still a challenge for buyers, it’s evident that female buyers are seeking stability and control.

Condominium units and freehold townhomes are among the most active properties sought out by Gabriela and Sarah’s female clients. Their buyers are often prioritizing manageable maintenance, practicality and geographic convenience.

“My female buyers are drawn to a mix of neighbourhood styles depending on lifestyle and price point,” says Gabriela. “What matters most is a match between lifestyle, daily needs and budget.”

Yusra Rohiman, one of Gabriela’s clients, bought her new-build, end-unit townhome in Riverside South. But, it took a year of shopping the market until she found her prizewinner.

“This is called the education period when clients figure out what model or area is perfect for them and what works for their goals and lifestyle,” explains Gabriela.

“Buying and investing in real estate had been a dream of mine since I was young, but coming from an immigrant family, the journey was never easy,” says Yusra. “I learned early on to navigate life independently.”

When COVID-19 hit, Yusra felt overwhelmed by the unpredictable housing market. Yet, Gabriela’s honesty and sincerity stood out. “She never pressured me to buy. In fact, she encouraged me to pause and wait while I navigated uncertainty in my personal life,” says Yusra.

“Gabriela became my sounding board and calming presence through a process that can be incredibly nerve-racking, especially when doing it alone,” she adds.

Working with a female real estate agent offered Yusra the kind of support she didn’t know she needed.

“Gabriela continued to show up as I learned the ropes. With her by my side, I turned a lifelong dream into reality,” she says.

At the end of the day, the primary goal of female buyers is to own a home independently. OH

NATURE AT YOUR DOORSTEP

It’s safe to say that a love of nature is something Canadians hold dear. Birds are one of the closest connections to nature we have. Whether you live in the city or the countryside, you’ll always have close encounters with birds. Step outside to hear the resident robin singing cheerfully. Take a drive in the country and spot swallows swooping over fields. Go for coffee in town and watch House Sparrows hop around, cleaning up fallen crumbs. Enjoy a weekend camping or cottaging and wake up to the iconic call of the loon. We are a “birdyfull” country. As we celebrate our identity around Canada Day festivities, let’s take a gander at birds that are iconically Canadian.

CANADA’S OFFICIAL BIRD

Well, go figure, we don’t have one! We have the beaver as our national animal, the maple tree as the official arboreal emblem and even an official horse – the Canadian Horse. Many people think the Common Loon is our national bird, but it isn’t. However, there is a growing movement to designate a bird that represents the entire country. Canadian Geographic magazine recently consulted ornithologists, conducted an online survey and held debates on this very topic. The top five finalists for Canada’s official bird were the Common Loon, Snowy Owl, Canada Jay, Canada Goose and Black-capped Chickadee. Competition was stiff, and although the loon won the popular vote, the Canada Jay was chosen by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Choosing a winner was not an easy task, given our country’s colossal size and the diversity of its bird populations.

ONTARIO’S OFFICIAL BIRD

Ontario does have an official bird, the everpopular Common Loon, designated in 1994. The loon is a fitting avian ambassador for Ontario, given that this province has more than 250,000 lakes, many of which are home to loon families each summer. With its soulstirring yodels, wails and laughs, the loon is the iconic call of the wild and a treasured symbol of our wilderness. However, one of the reasons the loon wasn’t chosen as Canada’s national bird was that it was already taken as Ontario’s avian emblem.

CANADIAN NAMESAKES

We do have birds named in honour of Canada. Three, in fact. First up is the already mentioned Canada Jay. Until recently, its official name was Gray Jay. It was originally named Canada Jay, but somewhere along the way, the American Ornithological Union (AOU) decided Gray Jay was more suitable. However, in 2016, a long-time Gray Jay researcher at Algonquin Provincial Park, along with other Canadian ornithologists, successfully petitioned for a change back to Canada Jay. Their widespread presence across the country contributed to their proposal as a national bird, along with their year-round residency, as they never migrate in winter. And they’re not sorry about that; they thrive in the cold. Much like these birds, Canadians strongly identify with long, cold winters. Canada Jays are very intelligent and curious, but perhaps their most Canadian attribute is their friendliness. They’ll pop out of the woods

as you wander along, check out what you’re up to, join you at your campsite and even politely accept a treat from your hand if offered. They are a true representative of our Canadian character.

Next is the Canada Warbler, a yellowbellied and bespectacled bird that sports a black necklace across its bright throat. It was named after Canada, as it was first discovered here. Like us, it loves our vast forests – most of its population breeds in our boreal. It’s a much sought-after species by birders, passing through only briefly in migration before tending to secretively hunker down to nest deep in the forest. A true Canadian homesteader. And finally, it tops off its allegiance to our country with its vibrant song – the mnemonic can be interpreted as the bouncy “Canada is so sweet.”

The third bird with our country’s namesake is the ubiquitous Canada Goose. This widespread, well-known bird can live almost everywhere, making it omnipresent across Canada. Although they’re hard to miss, these geese faced near extinction in the early 1900s. Overhunting and habitat destruction devastated their numbers, leaving only a few remaining pockets of survivors. Conservation efforts brought the species back due to the birds’ high reproductive rates and longevity. Then, again, due to human actions, they became overabundant. Our urban parks, lawns, golf courses and sports fields provide the precise short-grass food supply they thrive on. We inadvertently made living easy for these big birds, even to the extent that they’ve lost their migratory instinct. And that’s a shame, because not so long ago, the sights and sounds of great V-shaped flocks of geese overhead were a welcome and unmistakable sign of a Canadian spring.

ONLY IN CANADA

Next up on our list of patriotic Canadian birds are two species that nest only in Canada and nowhere else in the world. These species are breeding endemics, meaning they winter elsewhere but come to Canada to raise their young. The Harris’s Sparrow, a dapper species sporting a black face and bib and a perky pink bill, breeds in spruce tundra across our northern territories. True to its Canadian heritage, its song is a distinct, sweet, three-note whistle that can only be described mnemonically as “Can-a-da!”

The Ross’s Goose, a cute but tough snow-white goose with black wingtips, is our other Canada-only nester. Its very limited breeding area is along the Arctic Ocean shoreline of Nunavut and adjacent islands. While they migrate south to their wintering grounds along a narrow route, they are frequently seen in the company of Canada Geese during migration, far from their usual route. They seem to need little coaxing to discover other parts of Canada, just as many of us are doing these days.

MADE IN CANADA

Beyond this, millions upon millions of birds make their way to Canada each spring to raise their young in our vast, bird-friendly forests. Ornithologists refer to our immense boreal forest as North America’s “bird nursery” due to the incredible number of birds that nest here each year. The boreal, one of the world’s largest forest ecosystems, spreads across Canada from Alaska to Newfoundland. Up to three billion baby birds and their parents, representing 300 species, nest or forage here, reflecting an avian diversity much like Canada’s multicultural mosaic. Like us, these baby birds have won the birth lottery by being hatched in such a glorious and free land. If I were to anthropomorphize them, I’d say they’re proud Canadians! OH

Here’s how to make a big impact with small bites this summer.

Seasonal Styling

This type of gathering is meant to be casual and carefree, so don’t stress about the forecast. Snack parties can travel well. If the sun shines, set up on the patio, dock, beach or in your backyard. If it rains, simply move everyone under a covered porch or head inside. Create a relaxing moment by layering cushions and low tables that encourage guests to linger and chat longer.

Lean into everything that makes summer feel special. Display wildflowers in jars, use fresh fruit garnishes and add playful colours across your table. A few natural pieces in wood or slate will also ground the vibe. Let the tablescape look abundant but not necessarily elegant. Focus on a sun-drenched afternoon aesthetic that feels authentic.

Table Talk

Select serving pieces that get noticed. A bold tablescape doesn’t have to sacrifice quality. It can be fun, colourful and cheeky with pieces that will last for summers to come. Incorporate punchy patterns, bright hues and dishes with phrases that spark conversation. A bowl stamped with “Soy Into You” or plates with a citrus pattern instantly set a laid-back tone.

Take A Bite

Make the menu bite-sized and bountiful. A charcuterie board is everyone’s first thought. Elevate it with berries or cherry tomatoes fresh from the garden alongside the traditional cubed cheeses, prosciutto roses and crackers. For an extra pop of colour, sprinkle in a summery surprise such as edible flowers.

Fill the small bowls with olives, nuts and flavourful dips such as creamy hummus, zesty tzatziki or guacamole. Cold options, including smoked salmon on cucumber rounds or mini caprese skewers, can be prepared ahead of the party, while grilled sliders or toasted bruschetta offer warm, savoury options. The goal is to serve tiny bites packed with flavour that everyone can enjoy.

Raspberry and Lemon SEMIFREDDO

This frozen dessert offers a texture between mousse and ice cream, perfectly balancing bright citrus with sweet-tart berries. It’s the ideal light and refreshing treat.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 8 Servings

1 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)

1-2 Tbsp sugar (optional, for raspberry purée)

4 large eggs

²∕³ cup granulated sugar

1½ cups heavy cream

Juice of 1 lemon

Zest of 1 lemon

½ cup fresh raspberries (for layering)

INSTRUCTIONS

Purée 1 cup raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Sweeten with sugar if needed, then strain through a fine sieve to remove seeds.

In a heatproof bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together. Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk continuously until the sugar dissolves and reaches 165°F. Remove from the heat, then beat with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Cool to room temperature.

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled egg mixture until smooth and airy. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls. Fold the raspberry purée into one portion and the lemon juice and zest into the other.

Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and parchment paper. Spread the raspberry mixture into the bottom of the pan and scatter with fresh raspberries. Spoon the lemon mixture over the top and smooth the surface. Cover and freeze until firm, at least six hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, unwrap and invert the semifreddo onto a serving platter. Slice and serve with fresh raspberries or extra lemon zest. OH
