tTHERE IS SOMETHING BOTH EXHILARATING AND UNSETTLING ABOUT MOVING.

This summer finds my family settling into a new space and all the upheaval that comes with it. Boxes still unpacked, furniture waiting for a permanent home and the ongoing process of figuring out how everything fits within unfamiliar walls. Some rooms came together with ease, while others are still evolving. It has been a season of tweaking, nesting and moving things from room to room and spot to spot almost daily. I have no doubt that will continue for months, and I will admit I am enjoying the process as life unfolds into summer.

When adapting to a new space, the atmosphere created by everyday life quickly takes centre stage. The unfamiliar thumps and squeaks to investigate, light shifting through the day in ways we are still learning and the birds outside becoming part of the backdrop. With windows open more often and longer evenings settling in, those details feel even more noticeable this time of year. My family and I are also getting to know new neighbours, new routines and the rhythm of this environment as the season settles around us.

A recent afternoon at the Aberfoyle Antique Market with my Mom fit naturally into this stage of settling in. In the warm summer air, we wandered through rows of vintage art, furniture and cool décor items, pointing things out to each other as we went. This market is a gem for décor pieces, each with its own story and whimsy. I came home with a few additions for the new space, pieces that do not overpower a room but quietly add personality and a more collected feeling over time. I have always loved mixing modern style with items from my family’s past or pieces discovered somewhere unexpected. Those layers are often what make a space feel personal.

Even if you are not settling into a new space this summer, the season has a way of making you look at your surroundings differently. Summer light, open windows and a shift in routine can make familiar rooms feel new again. Sometimes it is a new piece, sometimes it is simply rearranging what you already have. In an era dominated by rapid furniture turnover and trend-chasing, slow decorating is emerging as a thoughtful, intentional alternative. This approach uses personal choices to transform your home into an authentic, evolving reflection of you and your family.

If you are looking to create an interior that stands out in the sea of sameness, here are some elements of the slow decorating philosophy you can adopt.

FLEX YOUR PATIENCE

Instant gratification and perfectly styled interiors have become the norm. Opting out of these online trends and turning to slow decorating can ease the stress of having an Instagram-ready space.

Accept that good things take time. Living in a space reveals what it truly needs and helps you better understand its energy. Ask yourself: What is missing? How do you need the space to function? What mood do you want to evoke?

When you set limits and decide what you’re willing to wait for, it can reduce impulse buying (and therefore less regret and dissatisfaction). It can also save money and lessen landfill waste. Of course, you cannot wait for everything, but consider

creating a plan and then budget accordingly. Once you adopt a slow decorating approach, use social media with intention. Instead of replicating popular looks, study what draws your attention. Is it scale, lighting, texture or balance? Gather design knowledge for your own journey instead of mimicking popular aesthetics.

WORK IN PROGRESS

It’s okay to live in an unfinished space for a while. Continually remind yourself that taking time will likely lead to greater satisfaction. Buying everything at once often creates interiors that feel contrived. Experimenting teaches you what works and what doesn’t. Use what you have until you find the right piece. Embrace the bare walls until you find art that resonates. Save up for that hand-blocked wallcovering you adore, and embark on a hunt for the perfect vintage rug that will last a lifetime. Contrary to what the online world portrays, you do not need to have a perfect space immediately, even in a new home.

FIND SOUL AND PERSONALITY

Slow decorating encourages you to define your unique style. Select pieces you truly cherish to enliven your home. Choosing an item just because it pairs well with something can leave a space feeling forced. When hunting for furniture and making

material selections, think about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, who encourages you to only keep items that “spark joy.” If it’s not an immediate yes, move on.

If you’re unsure where to start, begin with one room or even just a corner. Ask yourself what colours, moods or objects make you feel at home. Consider how the space can support your lifestyle. Try rearranging, repainting or reusing what you have. As you experiment, your personal style will reveal itself, and your confidence will grow.

FOCUS ON FOREVER

This approach invites us to invest time and effort in finding pieces that hold personal significance. Whether family heirlooms, travel souvenirs or handcrafted items from local artisans, these cherished pieces will create a space that feels authentic to you. HEIRLOOM TOMATO & RICOTTA GALETTE

A rustic galette of handmade pastry layered with ricotta, chives and basil, topped with heirloom tomatoes. Baked until golden, it combines creamy cheese, fresh herbs and the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4 Servings

1½ cups all-purpose flour

½ tsp salt

10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed

4-5 Tbsp ice water

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives

1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil

2 egg yolks

Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper

2-3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form, and the butter pieces are no larger than small peas.

Add ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Form into a round disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough out on a lightly-floured surface into a 10- to 12-inch circle, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.

In a small bowl, mix ricotta, chives, basil, 1 egg yolk and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pastry, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the ricotta.

Fold the pastry edges over the filling to form a rustic crust. Whisk the remaining egg yolk and brush over the pastry.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the tomatoes are softened. Cool slightly before slicing and serving. OH

INVITING THE Bees HOME

Did you know that there are over 800 species of native ground and twig nesting bees in Canada? Solitary bees like mason bees and leafcutter bees are unsung heroes of pollination. A single mason bee can pollinate as many flowers as 100 honeybees. They mostly do not live in social structures; instead, they forage for nectar and pollinate independently. These gentle insects rarely sting and pose no threat to children or pets, making them ideal garden companions.

YOU DON’T NEED A LARGE PROPERTY OR SPECIAL EQUIPMENT TO WELCOME SOLITARY BEES. HERE ARE SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN A HAVEN:

We are lucky to live in areas where orchards and wildflowers flourish. Unlike honeybees, solitary bees don’t live in hives or produce honey. Instead, they nest alone in small cavities and quietly go about their work, pollinating plants with remarkable efficiency. Creating a bee-friendly home environment is simple, lowmaintenance and deeply rewarding.

INSTALL BEE BRICKS OR BEE HOTELS

These structures mimic natural nesting sites. Bee bricks can be built into garden walls or placed on patios, while bee hotels – wooden frames filled with hollow tubes – can be mounted on fences or sheds. Some are specifically designed for Ontario native bees, with different-sized holes for the various bees they host. Small holes attract small carpenter bees; medium and large holes attract mason bees and leafcutter bees. Whichever you decide on, make sure to position them in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally facing southeast.

GROW NATIVE PLANTS

Choose a mix of flowering plants that bloom from early spring (spring bulbs) to late fall. Try using locally adapted native wildflowers like wild bergamot, black-eyed Susan and goldenrod, or old-fashioned heirloom varieties. These flowers produce more nectar and pollen throughout the season than modern hybrids. Planting in clumps of five or six of the same kind is beneficial for the bees, too.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOWERS

Double flowers don’t have the same amount of nectar as single-petalled plants. Flowers in bright white, yellow, blue or ultraviolet colours are best for attracting bees. Nectar guides are also important features on the flowers that lure bees. Examples include plants like lupines and irises, which have evolved colours to suit bee vision. The shape of the flower also matters. Shallow, tubular plants (such as turtleheads, Chelone obliqua) or those with a landing platform are best. Avoid pesticides: even organic sprays can harm bees. Opt for natural pest control methods and encourage biodiversity to keep your garden balanced.

PROVIDE MUD AND LEAVES

Leafcutter bees snip leaves from lilacs, redbuds and roses to line their nests, while mason bees use mud. Sunny, flat and bare ground areas are what most nesting female bees need to raise their young.

KEEP IT MESSY

Resist the urge to over-tidy. Dead stems, fallen logs and leaf litter provide nesting and overwintering spots. Creating habitat for our native bees, specifically solitary bees, is as important as creating habitat for our birds, caterpillars and butterflies.

Supporting solitary bees at home is a quiet act of stewardship. With just a few changes, your garden can become a sanctuary for these vital pollinators. In return, you’ll enjoy healthier plants, more vibrant blooms and higher yields from your veggie gardens or fruit trees. You receive the satisfaction of helping nature thrive – right in your own backyard. OH

The ART of the DINNER PARTY

EVERY TIME I WATCH ONE OF THOSE COOKING SHOWS that follow a Michelin-starred chef, I think, “That food looks exquisite, but that lifestyle looks like it needs more seasoning.”

When I think about the meals my friends and I make, I notice that we’re generally capable. We’ve enjoyed venison steaks, spicy kale salads with pine nuts, vegetable pakoras, and once, a cruelty-free pâté. In case you were wondering, the answer is, yes, my friends and I are intolerable, eager foodies.

We won’t be winning any awards, though. We’re just enthusiastic cooks who enjoy an audience. Living outside the city, without endless restaurant options, means we like to host dinners. And since it’s summer, there’s much to be said about hosting the ideal summer dinner party.

I consider numbers first. I’m convinced six to eight people is my sweet spot. More than five guests means people always feel comfortable talking, but with more than eight guests, I’d need to make a roast or host a potluck. An ideal location for these dinners is likely one that highlights the outdoors. It’s summer, we must eat outside. I have a deck, so that’s what we use, but a patio, veranda, dock or boathouse would work just as well. In an ideal world, I’d serve my dinners on the deck of a boathouse in the first week of July when the sun takes its time to set.

Who do you invite? Friends. That’s my thinking. We see family at regular intervals. Thanksgiving, the next birthday, a wedding, graduation, retirement party and dance recitals are all coming. So, carve out intentional time with friends. Tell them, “We haven’t gotten together in a while,” or find something to commemorate by saying, “It’s the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, I’m making lamb.” Invite them for any old reason, really.

What do you serve? I’m an overzealous foodie, but I’m sure my dishes won’t matter much, just so long as I make sure they’re grilled. An important part of summer, for me, is grilling. I grill so often that my wife comes to me in September and says, “I’m craving a stew.” When it comes to dessert, don’t overlook the best fruit in season. Wild Ontario blueberries, ripe Niagara peaches and locally grown strawberries are all must-haves. Almost anything you make will pair well with these.

After you’ve got all that sorted out, the rest is just like a garnish. Throw on some music, play a game, reminisce, make future plans, have a fire and hopefully people will stay later than they had planned. Perfection is just before people have to leave, and you get a few minutes to look up at the night sky. You might see the very bright Vega star in the constellation Lyra. I’m told the surface temperature of the star is roughly 9,000°C. Sounds incredible for searing a ribeye. OH

tThe transformation by Slinger Construction Inc. was guided by owner Evan Slinger, with operations manager Sarah Slinger keeping the build organized and consistent from start to finish. “The house had been in the family for decades, and while it held sentimental value, it was largely unchanged and no longer suited modern living,” says Evan. “The goal was to fully modernize it while maintaining the original footprint.” Architectural plans from Elevate Home Design and interior direction from Studio Moffatt rounded out the renovation planning team.

For the growing family, the project began with a clear priority to honour the home’s history while updating it for everyday life. That intention guided everything from layout decisions to material selections, creating a home that feels cohesive rather than overdesigned. “It was important for us to have a fresh modern feel but not lose that warmth that we felt in the home as it was originally built by family over 65 years ago,” the homeowners say.

The project involved removing the roof, installing new trusses, reworking the entire interior layout and building a new foundation for a garage addition with two bedrooms and a bathroom above. The exterior was fully updated, and the new design introduced a main-floor primary bedroom, a spacious open kitchen and a main-floor laundry, bringing the home to approximately 1,800 square feet. Construction took approximately six months, with the homeowners relocating during the process.

The result is a bright, open and functional home that is a significant departure from the original layout and appearance. “From a construction standpoint, tying the new structure into the existing home was one of the more complex aspects,” says Evan. “A key moment was during framing, when the new layout and scale became clear and it was evident how much the home had been elevated. Projects like this are always about listening first, then shaping the design around how people actually live.”

Stepping inside, the home opens into a light-filled modern transitional interior with subtle Mid-century influences and a warm, inviting feel. New windows from North Star Windows & Doors not only improve energy performance but also allow natural light to move more freely through the interior. Engineered hardwood from The Carpet Store runs throughout the main living areas, creating a continuous visual flow, and tile installations and in-floor heating from Inspired Tile introduce durability and texture in high-use spaces. To the right of the entryway, a relocated mudroom improves everyday functionality, with Brazilian slate tile and full-height custom cabinetry by Brubacher Furniture creating a practical solution for a busy household. This space also features an integrated laundry area with a walnut countertop by Lightwood Designs that blends style and purpose.

A spacious new kitchen area anchors the home. Relocated to the back of the house and more than doubled in size, it now connects the main living and dining areas. Custom cabinetry by Brubacher Furniture is finished in Benjamin Moore Clay Beige on the lower units and island, paired with Dove Wing on the upper cabinets. Quartz countertops from Graniteworx provide a durable and lowmaintenance work surface, while an oversize island creates space for gathering, meal prep and everyday living. Large renovations inevitably involve unknowns, and being open to adjustments helps ensure a strong final outcome.” That mindset allowed challenges to be addressed without compromising the overall vision.

In a historic rural setting on the outskirts of Cambridge, where open fields and wide lawns shape a sense of calm possibility, a newly built home settles into place.

DDesigned and built with longevity in mind by Shirecrest Homes Inc, it reflects a thoughtful approach to both form and function, built using enduring materials and a clear understanding of how it will support everyday living over time.

When the homeowners came to the Shirecrest team ready to create a long-term residence tailored to their family, their focus was on a home that would support daily life while exceeding standard building expectations. “They wanted it to be suitable for their family needs and built above and beyond code minimums,” says Shirecrest president Ken Sommer, adding that the project was unique. “The site had particular environmental constraints and is located within a designated heritage area, so the permitting process was lengthy and involved multiple levels of government.” Continued on page 58

That mindset guided the entire process. From planning through construction, the emphasis remained on strength, efficiency and longevity. With architectural drawing support from J. H. Cohoon Engineering Ltd., the Shirecrest team designed and developed a home that balances beauty and performance. “The homeowners were incredible to work with. They were honest and clear with expectations and had an understanding of the construction process,” says Ken. “They gave us the design latitude to meet goals, so we could pull from our 20-plus years of homebuilding experience to create a space that would suit their needs and goals.”

A key decision was the use of Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction across the full build. Rather than limiting this system to below-grade applications, it was carried through to the roofline, creating a continuous, highly insulated envelope. The approach results in a solid, energy-conscious home built to withstand both time and climate.

On the exterior, a metal roofing system from Metal Roof Outlet, finished with Tilcor shingles in Arctic Grey, provides durability with a clean profile. Masonry from Patene Building Supplies introduces texture, grounding the home in its rural surroundings. Windows and the front door from Dashwood Industries Inc. bring in consistent natural light, while security doors by Entry Doors Toronto Inc. add a refined elegance. “Provisions were also put in place for a future solar panel installation, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to sustainability and resilience,” says Ken.

Inside, the home shifts to a more relaxed, open and airy expression. The design, expertly guided by senior designer Cortney Doherty with support from junior designer Rachael Carter, blends contemporary clarity with Craftsman warmth. Timber supplied by Townsend Lumber Inc. plays an important role, particularly in the great room where natural wood accents soften the architectural lines.

The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, anchored by an oversize island designed for gathering and connection. Dark wood lower cabinetry is paired with light-coloured uppers for a balanced, layered look, while a ceiling-height herringbone tile backsplash reflects light beautifully, adding texture, warmth and a polished glow to the space. The entryway introduces the home with light and space. A handcrafted wood staircase by Shirecrest Homes, leading to the lower level, becomes an immediate focal point, complemented by trim and mouldings from Riverside Millwork Group and a statement chandelier. An office and powder room are tucked nearby, offering convenience without interrupting flow.

The Shirecrest team and the homeowners worked closely to plan the layout. Shared spaces are open and inviting, encouraging connection. A main-floor primary suite allows for easy, comfortable living over time, supporting the homeowners as their needs evolve. “The home was designed to balance openness and privacy, featuring expansive, open-concept main living areas ideal for gathering and entertaining, alongside more secluded bedroom spaces that offer comfort and retreat,” says Ken.

In the kitchen, cabinetry by CW Kitchens Inc. is paired with quartz counters from Quartz Co, creating a workspace that is both efficient and visually calm. A concealed pantry expands storage while maintaining a clean, open feel. “This allowed additional storage to be added to the kitchen without making it feel too large,” says Ken. Fixtures from The Water Closet and lighting from The Lighting Shoppe complete the space with understated detail.

Material consistency carries throughout the home. Oak hardwood flooring from Sarmazian Brothers Flooring adds warmth underfoot. Subtle tile installations across floors, walls and backsplashes introduce texture without overwhelming the design. Interior doors and additional millwork from Riverside Millwork Group reinforce a cohesive look.

The great room is the centre of the design impact. Its tall ceiling, accented with timber, enhances the sense of openness while drawing in natural light. A sleek Stûv double-sided fireplace from Porky’s BBQ, Hearth & Spa anchors the space, offering both function and a modern, stylish focal point. “This room is unique as we had to incorporate a high-efficiency wood-burning stove in the space,” says Ken. “We ensured that the HVAC equipment could handle the movement of the heat generated from this space throughout the home. The home has fantastic vistas to the rear, so we incorporated floor-toceiling glass in this area to ensure they could be enjoyed on cold winter days.”

Every decision was made to create a safe, energy efficient and exceptionally well-built indoor living environment.”

NATURE AT YOUR DOORSTEP

It’s safe to say that a love of nature is something Canadians hold dear. Birds are one of the closest connections to nature we have. Whether you live in the city or the countryside, you’ll always have close encounters with birds. Step outside to hear the resident robin singing cheerfully. Take a drive in the country and spot swallows swooping over fields. Go for coffee in town and watch House Sparrows hop around, cleaning up fallen crumbs. Enjoy a weekend camping or cottaging and wake up to the iconic call of the loon. We are a “birdyfull” country. As we celebrate our identity around Canada Day festivities, let’s take a gander at birds that are iconically Canadian.

CANADA’S OFFICIAL BIRD

Well, go figure, we don’t have one! We have the beaver as our national animal, the maple tree as the official arboreal emblem and even an official horse – the Canadian Horse. Many people think the Common Loon is our national bird, but it isn’t. However, there is a growing movement to designate a bird that represents the entire country. Canadian Geographic magazine recently consulted ornithologists, conducted an online survey and held debates on this very topic. The top five finalists for Canada’s official bird were the Common Loon, Snowy Owl, Canada Jay, Canada Goose and Black-capped Chickadee. Competition was stiff, and although the loon won the popular vote, the Canada Jay was chosen by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Choosing a winner was not an easy task, given our country’s colossal size and the diversity of its bird populations.

ONTARIO’S OFFICIAL BIRD

Ontario does have an official bird, the everpopular Common Loon, designated in 1994. The loon is a fitting avian ambassador for Ontario, given that this province has more than 250,000 lakes, many of which are home to loon families each summer. With its soulstirring yodels, wails and laughs, the loon is the iconic call of the wild and a treasured symbol of our wilderness. However, one of the reasons the loon wasn’t chosen as Canada’s national bird was that it was already taken as Ontario’s avian emblem.

CANADIAN NAMESAKES

We do have birds named in honour of Canada. Three, in fact. First up is the already mentioned Canada Jay. Until recently, its official name was Gray Jay. It was originally named Canada Jay, but somewhere along the way, the American Ornithological Union (AOU) decided Gray Jay was more suitable. However, in 2016, a long-time Gray Jay researcher at Algonquin Provincial Park, along with other Canadian ornithologists, successfully petitioned for a change back to Canada Jay. Their widespread presence across the country contributed to their proposal as a national bird, along with their year-round residency, as they never migrate in winter. And they’re not sorry about that; they thrive in the cold. Much like these birds, Canadians strongly identify with long, cold winters. Canada Jays are very intelligent and curious, but perhaps their most Canadian attribute is their friendliness. They’ll pop out of the woods

as you wander along, check out what you’re up to, join you at your campsite and even politely accept a treat from your hand if offered. They are a true representative of our Canadian character.

Next is the Canada Warbler, a yellowbellied and bespectacled bird that sports a black necklace across its bright throat. It was named after Canada, as it was first discovered here. Like us, it loves our vast forests – most of its population breeds in our boreal. It’s a much sought-after species by birders, passing through only briefly in migration before tending to secretively hunker down to nest deep in the forest. A true Canadian homesteader. And finally, it tops off its allegiance to our country with its vibrant song – the mnemonic can be interpreted as the bouncy “Canada is so sweet.”

The third bird with our country’s namesake is the ubiquitous Canada Goose. This widespread, well-known bird can live almost everywhere, making it omnipresent across Canada. Although they’re hard to miss, these geese faced near extinction in the early 1900s. Overhunting and habitat destruction devastated their numbers, leaving only a few remaining pockets of survivors. Conservation efforts brought the species back due to the birds’ high reproductive rates and longevity. Then, again, due to human actions, they became overabundant. Our urban parks, lawns, golf courses and sports fields provide the precise short-grass food supply they thrive on. We inadvertently made living easy for these big birds, even to the extent that they’ve lost their migratory instinct. And that’s a shame, because not so long ago, the sights and sounds of great V-shaped flocks of geese overhead were a welcome and unmistakable sign of a Canadian spring.

ONLY IN CANADA

Next up on our list of patriotic Canadian birds are two species that nest only in Canada and nowhere else in the world. These species are breeding endemics, meaning they winter elsewhere but come to Canada to raise their young. The Harris’s Sparrow, a dapper species sporting a black face and bib and a perky pink bill, breeds in spruce tundra across our northern territories. True to its Canadian heritage, its song is a distinct, sweet, three-note whistle that can only be described mnemonically as “Can-a-da!”

The Ross’s Goose, a cute but tough snow-white goose with black wingtips, is our other Canada-only nester. Its very limited breeding area is along the Arctic Ocean shoreline of Nunavut and adjacent islands. Bringing Affordable Housing to Guelph and Wellington County

This year, Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington is dedicated to bringing affordable housing to Guelph and Wellington County. With the completion of the Garafraxa Village Community, Habitat has introduced 32 homes to the area. This development includes a mix of Habitat’s affordable homeownership units and market purchase options, continuing to make a positive impact in the community.

At Garafraxa Village in Fergus, there are still a limited number of homes available for purchase through the habitat homeownership program as well as market purchase. The units include two, three, and four-bedroom homes, including accessible options, with move-in dates scheduled for this year.

Habitat’s affordable homeownership program helps individuals and families who may not be able to achieve homeownership on their own. The program removes barriers to homeownership by offering:

• Down payments tailored to each family, with families covering closing costs

• Mortgage payments capped at no more than 30% of household income

• Simplified home purchasing without bidding wars and with application support

GERRIE’S GARDEN CENTRE & FARM MARKET

Since the late 1940s the Gerrie family has been farming on the edge of scenic Elora. Harvey and Alice Gerrie began with a chick hatchery and a tree and shrub nursery. Harvey was very involved in the local Horticultural society, and is fondly remembered for his many gardening tips.

Regular customers still remember buying eggs from Harvey and Alice. Harvey’s son, Paul, took over the farm and garden centre in 1986. He began growing more produce and expanded the farm market. In 2005 he began bringing in other locally grown produce and adding frozen meats to the store. The garden centre also expanded – packaging and retailing quality garden seeds along with fertilizers and soils.

In 2016 the store and facilities were rebuilt, more than doubling the square footage. Many more items including dairy, flour and cereals, and quality oils were added to the shelves. Paul’s son, Tim, is now actively involved and the legacy of serving the community continues.

THE

SURGE OF SOLO BUYERS

Single women appear to be buying more homes than single men across North America. In Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported in 2016 that 61 per cent of first-time and repeat home buyers in Canada were female.

In the U.S., the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers reports that 20 per cent of home buyers in 2024 were single women, outnumbering single male buyers, who accounted for eight per cent of the market.

Gabriela Anaya, a real estate agent at Engel & Völkers, is seeing this trend in Ottawa.

“A notable number of my clients are single women purchasing on their own,” says Gabriela. “These buyers are educated, thoughtful and intentional about putting down roots in their new city.”

Sarah Cameron, Ottawa real estate agent at Royal LePage, is seeing the same thing.

“In my own business, we’re seeing more

and more young women in their mid-to-late 20s stepping into homeownership, and I absolutely love it,” says Sarah, who attributes this to a combination of social and financial shifts. “They’re not waiting for a partner to make a move.”

When she asks her younger female clients how they’re able to start the home-buying process early and with independence, they credit their success to budgeting wisely.

“It really highlights something powerful: small, consistent choices add up. What you focus on expands – and when homeownership is the goal, their habits tend to align with it,” says Sarah.

As far as motivational trends go, Gabriela has found that they depend on the

individual. Some single women are decisive, while others are more cautious and take time to refine their vision.

“What I consistently see, just as I do with couples and solo men, is a focus on convenience, long-term value and finding a home that truly fits their lifestyle,” she explains.

As high market prices are still a challenge for buyers, it’s evident that female buyers are seeking stability and control.

Condominium units and freehold townhomes are among the most active properties sought out by Gabriela and Sarah’s female clients. Their buyers are often prioritizing manageable maintenance, practicality and geographic convenience.

“My female buyers are drawn to a mix of neighbourhood styles depending on lifestyle and price point,” says Gabriela. “What matters most is a match between lifestyle, daily needs and budget.”

Yusra Rohiman, one of Gabriela’s clients, bought her new-build, end-unit townhome in Riverside South. But, it took a year of shopping the market until she found her prizewinner.

“This is called the education period when clients figure out what model or area is perfect for them and what works for their goals and lifestyle,” explains Gabriela.

“Buying and investing in real estate had been a dream of mine since I was young, but coming from an immigrant family, the journey was never easy,” says Yusra. “I learned early on to navigate life independently.”

When COVID-19 hit, Yusra felt overwhelmed by the unpredictable housing market. Yet, Gabriela’s honesty and sincerity stood out. “She never pressured me to buy. In fact, she encouraged me to pause and wait while I navigated uncertainty in my personal life,” says Yusra.

“Gabriela became my sounding board and calming presence through a process that can be incredibly nerve-racking, especially when doing it alone,” she adds.

Working with a female real estate agent offered Yusra the kind of support she didn’t know she needed.

HOW TO MAKE A SUMMER

SALAD DRESSING

Summer is here, and while salads are delicious all year round, they’re especially good during spring and summer. Produce is fresh and local this time of year, and salads are a perfect hot-weather food.

If you find salads boring or not super filling, it’s likely you’re not making them to their fullest potential. A salad shouldn’t be all lettuce and no flavour. Salad dressings should add flavour without overpowering the salad. You want to be able to taste the greens and other ingredients. The purpose of the dressing is not to hide those flavours but to balance and enhance them.

VINAIGRETTES

Vinaigrettes are one of the most popular types of salad dressings. They contain oil, acid and a flavour booster. The standard ratio is three parts oil to one part acid, but this may vary depending on your taste preferences or the type of oil you’re using. If you remember from high school science class, oil and vinegar don’t mix and will separate when left to sit. By shaking or stirring them, you create a temporary emulsion. Or you can add an emulsifying ingredient like Dijon mustard, honey, tahini or egg yolks, which will prevent the oil and acid from separating.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A DELICIOUS SALAD DRESSING:

OIL – Use any oil you like, but since it’s the base, choose a high-quality oil with good flavour. Olive oil is the most common – it’s flavourful without being overpowering. You can also use avocado oil, grapeseed oil, flaxseed oil or walnut oil.

ACID – Options include lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, white balsamic vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, lime juice, orange juice and grapefruit juice. Use what makes the most sense for the salad and the season.

FLAVOUR BOOSTERS – These are what make your salad stand out! Mix and match different ingredients to create unique flavour combinations. Just note that if you’re adding herbs, spices, shallots, ginger or garlic, be sure to mince, chop very finely or blend your dressing. This prevents someone from eating a chunk of garlic while enjoying their salad.

Flavour boosters to try include garlic, fresh or dried herbs and spices, maple syrup, soy sauce, fresh ginger, miso paste, tahini, nutritional yeast, shallots, red chilli flakes, Dijon mustard and sesame oil. Sesame oil is technically an oil, but the flavour is strong, and you only need a small amount. You wouldn’t want to use this as your sole oil in a dressing.

HELPFUL TIPS

Be sure to taste your dressing before committing it to your salad. Does it need more acid? Sweetness? Something else?

Make the dressing in a mason jar. Just shake to combine your ingredients, then easily store extra in the fridge.

Always shake or stir your dressing before drizzling it on your salad, even if you’ve added an emulsifier.

If you use dried herbs or spices, you’ll need less than if you use fresh. Their flavour is very concentrated. OH

What emerges is a study in how modern buyers think about home – not just in terms of aesthetics, but in how space supports changing routines, temporary stays and long-term flexibility. “While knowing it was going to become a rental before finishing the house, the list of ‘must-haves’ changed to accommodate a more relaxed build,” says Brooklynn. The long and narrow site imposed its own challenges. Structural framing and materials supplied by Fairway Lumber Home Building Centre worked within the limits of Ontario Building Code requirements. The design allows circulation and function to stack cleanly across three levels. The main floor brings together the kitchen, dining and living spaces with an entry and generous butler’s pantry, opening onto a rear deck that extends the living experience outdoors. Exterior systems by Nedlaw Roofs and windows from Pickles Home Exteriors complete the envelope with precision. Inside, continuity is maintained with trim and doors from Riverside Millwork Group, while masonry by Ferrell Builders’ Supply grounds the structure in material weight and consistency.

The second floor is practical in its arrangement, with bedrooms, bathrooms, an office and laundry positioned for everyday ease. Above it, the third floor offers something more reflective.

“The third floor is, as they say, where the magic happens,” says Brooklynn. “Being three floors up, looking over the neighbouring roofs, you can see the most stunning sunsets from up there.”

Material choices are restrained and cohesive. White oak engineered hardwood from Straightline Custom Flooring Inc. runs throughout, while City Stone countertops introduce quiet variation.

“Our goal was to make each bathroom feel unique, with no two patterns or styles being used twice,” says Brooklynn. Appliances from TA Appliances & Barbecues and furnishings from Hauser keep the interiors grounded and livable. The palette, anchored by Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray, allows light and materials to do most of the visual work.

Now operating as a short-term rental, the home offers a clear view of how the design holds up to daily use, welcoming a range of guests passing through Waterloo. That lived experience has become one of its most rewarding aspects, particularly in the way it supports people during times of transition or travel. At the same time, the project reflects a broader shift toward adaptable, experience-driven housing, where flexibility, clarity and comfort are equally valued. “Meeting families and short-term guests who come to Waterloo has been the most enjoyable part,” says Brooklynn. “Our goal was to make this house really feel like a five-star rental. People often seem relieved to find our rental during a chaotic or exhausting time of change.” OH

The HEALING POWER of Gardening

Gardening is more than a pastime – it is a powerful way to support our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Horticultural therapy has become widely recognized as a genuine approach to improving health. The simple act of digging our hands into soil can create meaningful shifts in how we feel, think and connect.

Physically, the benefits of gardening are generous. The gentle, low-impact movements involved in planting and weeding can build strength and improve mobility. Time spent outdoors increases exposure to sunlight and boosts vitamin D levels, resulting in stronger bones and immune function. Being immersed in a natural setting can reduce blood pressure and lower heart rates. But, beyond physical nourishment, the garden has a powerful effect on our mental well-being. If you’ve ever felt your stress wash away while tending to plants, there’s more to it than you might think.

TOSS THOSE GARDENING GLOVES

There is a powerful biological connection between soil and mental health. Soil contains a beneficial microorganism known as Mycobacterium vaccae, which has been linked to increased serotonin production – the chemical responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being. This may explain why time spent in the garden can feel naturally uplifting, even therapeutic. Studies suggest that gardeners report higher overall well-being and lower stress compared to nongardeners. So, next time you’re working in the garden, take off those gloves and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

PATIENCE & PURPOSE

Gardening teaches patience and humility. Gardeners are never fully in control – weather, soil conditions and natural cycles all play their part. Henry David Thoreau, the 19th-century naturalist, once wrote, “Resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” This surrender will foster resilience, acceptance and a deeper respect for nature’s rhythms.

There’s also something to be said about how gardening nurtures a sense of purpose and accomplishment within oneself. Planting a seed, tending to it and watching it grow can significantly boost self-esteem. It provides visible proof that care and effort lead to growth. This can be especially meaningful for those of us experiencing stress or anxiety, as it offers both structure and a sense of achievement.

CONNECTION COMES FROM GROWTH

Fundamentally, gardens connect us to the living systems on earth. When we engage with plants, soil, insects and birds, we deepen our relationship with the natural world. This connection reduces feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of belonging. Gardens also connect us to one another. The colour green, one of my favourite shades, is naturally soothing to the eyes and nervous system. Fragrant plants like lavender can calm the body, and the scent of rosemary may help improve memory.

Nature also reveals patterns that can resonate deeply. The Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the arrangements of seeds in sunflowers and in the spirals of pine cones, reflects an inherent order and beauty in the natural world. Our brains recognize and respond positively to these patterns, adding to the quiet joy we feel while connected to nature.

At its core, gardening reminds me of something essential: growth takes time. There’s real beauty in slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world and participating in the cycles of life. It’s healthy to remember that just outside our doors, the garden offers not only nourishment for the body but healing for the mind and spirit. OH

HOW-TO

Using a soft toothbrush, gently remove any debris from your shell, sand dollar or starfish.

Place seaside treasures in a container, cover with water and add two tablespoons of bleach. Leave items submerged until they whiten. If using a starfish, remove after 10 minutes as its colour won’t change much. Remove and let items dry completely.

Decide where you want to position the shell, starfish or sand dollar on the flat surface of the night light. Lift and apply hot glue to the edges that will contact the surface. Place, press and hold while removing any excess glue.

Once adhered, let the glue dry completely. Plug the light into the electrical socket and enjoy. OH

Raspberry and Lemon SEMIFREDDO

This frozen dessert offers a texture between mousse and ice cream, perfectly balancing bright citrus with sweet-tart berries. It’s the ideal light and refreshing treat.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 8 Servings

1 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)

1-2 Tbsp sugar (optional, for raspberry purée)

4 large eggs

²∕³ cup granulated sugar

1½ cups heavy cream

Juice of 1 lemon

Zest of 1 lemon

½ cup fresh raspberries (for layering)

INSTRUCTIONS

Purée 1 cup raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Sweeten with sugar if needed, then strain through a fine sieve to remove seeds.

In a heatproof bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together. Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk continuously until the sugar dissolves and reaches 165°F. Remove from the heat, then beat with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Cool to room temperature.

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled egg mixture until smooth and airy. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls. Fold the raspberry purée into one portion and the lemon juice and zest into the other.

Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and parchment paper. Spread the raspberry mixture into the bottom of the pan and scatter with fresh raspberries. Spoon the lemon mixture over the top and smooth the surface. Cover and freeze until firm, at least six hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, unwrap and invert the semifreddo onto a serving platter. Slice and serve with fresh raspberries or extra lemon zest. OH
