SSUMMER IN OTTAWA, when the city starts to sizzle, is something I never take for granted. As the mercury rises this season, so too does my gratitude for joining the OUR HOMES team. Stepping into a new space is always a moment of possibility – and I feel that same sense of anticipation as I introduce myself as the new managing editor for The City of Ottawa.

It’s an honour to join a publication that celebrates not only beautiful interiors and architecture but also the stories, creativity and craftsmanship that turn houses into homes across our region. From thoughtfully designed urban condos to warm, character-filled country homes, this magazine has long reflected the diversity and personality of Ottawa’s living spaces – and the people behind them.

My own passion for interiors has always been rooted in the idea that a home should feel both inspiring and deeply personal. That passion started early – as a kid, I was already cutting out photos of furniture and accessories to decorate my Barbies’ dream homes. This childhood love of scrapbooking grew into a love of architecture and design that eventually took me from photographing the medieval streetscapes of Bern, Switzerland, to admiring Haussmann’s transformation of Paris. Now, I’m thrilled to turn that lens on Ottawa.

In the issue ahead, you can expect a continued focus on local talent – designers, makers, builders and homeowners – whose work defines the character of our community. We explore elevated millwork in Rockland, a showpiece staircase in Alta Vista and discover how fire and light transform both feature homes into stunning, liveable works of art.

The SLOW HOME Approach

In an era dominated by rapid furniture turnover and trend-chasing, slow decorating is emerging as a thoughtful, intentional alternative. This approach uses personal choices to transform your home into an authentic, evolving reflection of you and your family.

If you are looking to create an interior that stands out in the sea of sameness, here are some elements of the slow decorating philosophy you can adopt.

FLEX YOUR PATIENCE

Instant gratification and perfectly styled interiors have become the norm. Opting out of these online trends and turning to slow decorating can ease the stress of having an Instagram-ready space.

Accept that good things take time. Living in a space reveals what it truly needs and helps you better understand its energy. Ask yourself: What is missing? How do you need the space to function? What mood do you want to evoke?

When you set limits and decide what you’re willing to wait for, it can reduce impulse buying (and therefore less regret and dissatisfaction). It can also save money and lessen landfill waste. Of course, you cannot wait for everything, but consider

creating a plan and then budget accordingly. Once you adopt a slow decorating approach, use social media with intention. Instead of replicating popular looks, study what draws your attention. Is it scale, lighting, texture or balance? Gather design knowledge for your own journey instead of mimicking popular aesthetics.

WORK IN PROGRESS

It’s okay to live in an unfinished space for a while. Continually remind yourself that taking time will likely lead to greater satisfaction. Buying everything at once often creates interiors that feel contrived. Experimenting teaches you what works and what doesn’t. Use what you have until you find the right piece. Embrace the bare walls until you find art that resonates. Save up for that hand-blocked wallcovering you adore, and embark on a hunt for the perfect vintage rug that will last a lifetime. Contrary to what the online world portrays, you do not need to have a perfect space immediately, even in a new home.

FIND SOUL AND PERSONALITY

Slow decorating encourages you to define your unique style. Select pieces you truly cherish to enliven your home. Choosing an item just because it pairs well with something can leave a space feeling forced. When hunting for furniture and making

material selections, think about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, who encourages you to only keep items that “spark joy.” If it’s not an immediate yes, move on.

If you’re unsure where to start, begin with one room or even just a corner. Ask yourself what colours, moods or objects make you feel at home. Consider how the space can support your lifestyle. Try rearranging, repainting or reusing what you have. As you experiment, your personal style will reveal itself, and your confidence will grow.

FOCUS ON FOREVER

This approach invites us to invest time and effort in finding pieces that hold personal significance. Whether family heirlooms, travel souvenirs or handcrafted items from local artisans, these cherished pieces will create a space that feels authentic to you. When collecting, ask yourself whether the item is something you’d be happy to pass down to future generations or if there is a meaningful story behind it. This also contributes to a more sustainable future, as the useful life of quality items is naturally longer.

HEIRLOOM TOMATO & RICOTTA GALETTE

A rustic galette of handmade pastry layered with ricotta, chives and basil, topped with heirloom tomatoes. Baked until golden, it combines creamy cheese, fresh herbs and the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4 Servings

1½ cups all-purpose flour

½ tsp salt

10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed

4-5 Tbsp ice water

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives

1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil

2 egg yolks

Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper

2-3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form, and the butter pieces are no larger than small peas.

Add ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Form into a round disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough out on a lightly-floured surface into a 10- to 12-inch circle, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix ricotta, chives, basil, 1 egg yolk and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pastry, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the ricotta. Fold the pastry edges over the filling to form a rustic crust. Whisk the remaining egg yolk and brush over the pastry.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the tomatoes are softened. Cool slightly before slicing and serving. OH

The HEALING POWER of Gardening

Gardening is more than a pastime – it is a powerful way to support our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Horticultural therapy has become widely recognized as a genuine approach to improving health. The simple act of digging our hands into soil can create meaningful shifts in how we feel, think and connect.

Physically, the benefits of gardening are generous. The gentle, low-impact movements involved in planting and weeding can build strength and improve mobility. Time spent outdoors increases exposure to sunlight and boosts vitamin D levels, resulting in stronger bones and immune function. Being immersed in a natural setting can reduce blood pressure and lower heart rates. But, beyond physical nourishment, the garden has a powerful effect on our mental well-being. If you’ve ever felt your stress wash away while tending to plants, there’s more to it than you might think.

TOSS THOSE GARDENING GLOVES

There is a powerful biological connection between soil and mental health. Soil contains a beneficial microorganism known as Mycobacterium vaccae, which has been linked to increased serotonin production – the chemical responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being. This may explain why time spent in the garden can feel naturally uplifting, even therapeutic. Studies suggest that gardeners report higher overall well-being and lower stress compared to nongardeners. So, next time you’re working in the garden, take off those gloves and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

PATIENCE & PURPOSE

Gardening teaches patience and humility. Gardeners are never fully in control – weather, soil conditions and natural cycles all play their part. Henry David Thoreau, the 19th-century naturalist, once wrote, “Resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” This surrender will foster resilience, acceptance and a deeper respect for nature’s rhythms.

There’s also something to be said about how gardening nurtures a sense of purpose and accomplishment within oneself. Planting a seed, tending to it and watching it grow can significantly boost self-esteem. It provides visible proof that care and effort lead to growth. This can be especially meaningful for those of us experiencing stress or anxiety, as it offers both structure and a sense of achievement.

CONNECTION COMES FROM GROWTH

Fundamentally, gardens connect us to the living systems on earth. When we engage with plants, soil, insects and birds, we deepen our relationship with the natural world. This connection reduces feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of belonging. Gardens also connect us to one another. Whether through community gardens, sharing harvests or simply bonding with family, these interactions increase oxytocin – the hormone associated with trust and connection.

Beyond what grows, a garden can provide sensory nourishment. Bright, vibrant flowers can stimulate dopamine, the feel-good brain chemical that enhances mood and motivation. The colour green, one of my favourite shades, is naturally soothing to the eyes and nervous system. Fragrant plants like lavender can calm the body, and the scent of rosemary may help improve memory.

Nature also reveals patterns that can resonate deeply. The Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the arrangements of seeds in sunflowers and in the spirals of pine cones, reflects an inherent order and beauty in the natural world. Our brains recognize and respond positively to these patterns, adding to the quiet joy we feel while connected to nature.

At its core, gardening reminds me of something essential: growth takes time. There’s real beauty in slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world and participating in the cycles of life. It’s healthy to remember that just outside our doors, the garden offers not only nourishment for the body but healing for the mind and spirit. OH

FOCUS ON flow

When homeowners Sanjay Murthy and Vandana Parnandi decided to build their Alta Vista home from scratch, they knew one thing for certain: they wanted to move away from traditional and toward contemporary style. They turned to residential designer Andre Godin, owner of Andre Godin Design, as the man for the job.

AAndre designed the open-concept floor plan for the 3,800 sq. ft. home around the family’s daily rhythms. The garage-to-mudroom-to-pantry entrance, for instance, creates a seamless flow from car to kitchen on grocery days. But the real priority was what you see the moment you walk through the front door: a clear sight-line from the foyer through to the backyard, anchored by a statement stone fireplace.

“Our previous home had the staircase as the entryway focal point. We did not want the staircase to be the focal point in our new space,” says Sanjay. “It’s still a showpiece, but off to the side.”

According to Andre, the homeowners wanted an open-concept main floor that could fit family and friends, grow with their kids and

give them room to entertain. Andre found them easy to work with.

“Sanjay and Vandana were not only engaged and enthusiastic about the project but also receptive to ideas,” he says. “Having homeowners who are decisive and easy to work with makes the project fun.”

One easy decision for the couple was which Euro Tile & Stone slabs should clad the formidable three-sided fireplace. The splitpane, double-vented fireplace is a standout work of art – central to the main floor and visible from every angle.

“This fireplace ended up being five times what was budgeted, but it’s got the navy and the gold that are accent colours in our home,” says Vandana. Continued on page 27

“Even without the fire on, it’s an amazing showpiece,” Sanjay adds.

For Andre, the kitchen needed to face the rear of the property – for entertaining, good flow and backyard views. The breakfast nook with banquette seating has morphed into a homework station for the kids, who enjoy being around their parents while they meal prep on their 14-foot-long island.

“We wanted a massive island, and we got a massive island,” says Sanjay. “Everything centres around that island, from meal prep to parties. All events end up here.”

The island’s extended length required two stone slabs. Project contractor Gordon Weima, owner of Gordon Weima Design Build, mitred the joint to merge seamlessly with the grey veining of the stone. The homeowners opted for more storage space underneath,

which is why they chose not to have a waterfall edge.

The design-build relationship between Andre and Gordon was collaborative from the start.

“I’ve known Andre for years, and he’s an amazing designer,” says Gordon. “The design for the house was great from the start. If I had any ideas or thoughts, I would run them by Andre, or clarify his vision for the space, and ask how I can help bring it to fruition.”

That collaboration shows in the details. White cabinets adorned with gold hardware conceal the Bosch double fridge and other Appliance Canada machinery. The blue dials on the Thermador oven match the navy-painted island base. Five brown barstools line one side, while three spherical pendant lights draw the eye up to the stunning tray ceiling –an intentional design of Andre’s that gives the space its quiet drama.

“We came from crown moulding and wainscotting, which is kind of old school, so this ceiling is the modern version of that,” says Sanjay.

“We didn’t want anything too traditional, but we wanted some depth on the ceiling,” adds Vandana. “To the untrained eye, it looks simple, but it’s actually a lot of craftsmanship.”

“Friends who visit always talk to us about our backyard,” says Sanjay. It’s easy to see why. A rectangular pool and raised spa sit on charcoal stone, while a cabana is clad in the same stone as the house – the thematic continuation of elements is unmissable. The shed and vegetable patch are tucked behind and to the left, letting the cabana take centre stage. The homeowners also incorporated an outdoor kitchen – and Sanjay insists its granite countertop holds up against the harshest of Ottawa winters.

From bathroom to kitchen, foyer to family room, this Rockland makeover proves that when trust meets transformation, anything is possible.

HHomeowners Serge and Nadine Lavictoire wanted to invest in the bathroom of their Rockland home and partnered with designer Pamela Charbonneau of Millstrong Cabinets to update the room. But as anyone who’s lived through a renovation knows, one project has a way of sparking the next.

“Once that project was complete, we started to think, ‘When do we start the kitchen?’ ” says Pamela.

For the kitchen reno, Serge and Nadine wanted a turnkey solution with one point person – not multiple contractors and trades.

The Millstrong team did not disappoint. The company is structured to deliver projects efficiently, professionally and without delays. Millstrong can champion tight timelines because they have two fulltime handymen supported by a dedicated full-time helper. Their site manager oversees all procurement, coordinating orders well in advance of project start dates and ensuring materials are delivered either at the shop or on site as required.

“This proactive approach allows us to stay ahead of schedule and maintain momentum throughout the project,” says Pamela.

A major advantage of working with Millstrong is the 25 years of expertise Pamela brings as in-house designer. Having her lead the project ensures the final result stays true to the original vision, while also giving her team the ability to quickly address any unforeseen challenges that may arise during a build or renovation.

The Lavictoires’ trust in Pamela ran deep. When she was brought on for the kitchen, she suggested expanding the scope of the renovation even further –into a second room.

“Nadine and Serge called me saying, ‘We really hate our kitchen,’ ” Pamela says. “As I was looking at the kitchen, I thought, the design is going to have to spread into the family room and become an openconcept space to have a cohesive flow.”

The addition of the family room to the blueprint went over surprisingly well.

“When I first saw the fireplace, I was sold on the design, and I hadn’t even seen the kitchen yet,” says Serge. The fireplace, clad in natural stone, anchors the family room and gives the space the warmth and character the couple had always wanted. “We love stone and have never had a fireplace,” Serge adds. “Pamela saw our vision and ran with it.”

Nadine agrees wholeheartedly. “We trusted Pamela completely. I don’t think we made one change to her design.”

The first thing Pamela considers when designing a kitchen is functionality, ensuring a family of four – five if you count Ginger, the

family's Cockapoo – can be in the same room, working at different stations without getting in each other’s way.

“Reducing clutter for Nadine was a big issue,” says Pamela. “That’s the first thing she said to me when she told me about the problems with her previous kitchen. We utilised closed doors and ensured we did not clutter countertops with appliances.”

The rift-cut white oak kitchen cabinet upper doors are milled in a one-step shaker-style profile. Above, the white range hood flows seamlessly into the leather-finished HanStone Cremosa quartz countertops. The island doors feature plank v-groove profiles, and the stainless steel appliances are showstoppers among the warm, Barcelona-stained cabinetry.

Pamela included several cupboards for hidden storage. The pantry houses the coffee machine, the microwave and all the cooking necessities Nadine doesn’t want to see daily. Continued on page 48

“Nadine really wanted a window on the main wall,” says Pamela. “I had to work hard to convince her not to do that.”

For the design to work, Pamela introduced multiple layers of artificial lighting instead. The mix of pendant lamps over the island, recessed lighting and a patio door now light up a room Nadine once referred to as her “cave.”

With the kitchen and family room complete, the rest of the main floor fell into step – carrying the traditional yet modern design Serge, Nadine and Pamela aimed to achieve.

The renovated bathroom has dark cabinetry and vertical wood slats that provide privacy for the water closet, ensuring it is not the focal point of the room. The Realstone slate porcelain tile floor in black matte separates the entryway from the adjacent family room. Sherwin Williams Iron Ore cloaks the closet doors, a moody contrast against the surrounding natural light. Wooden beams that match the kitchen cabinetry reinforce the divide, while the family room beyond feels light, bright and airy.

In the family room, with its mammoth stone fireplace as the centrepiece, the transformation is complete. Ginger perches atop the sofa, keeping neighbourhood watch from the windowsill, while Nadine is already looking ahead. “I’m planning my bedroom and en suite next!” If the main floor is any indication, the next chapter promises to be just as striking. Purée 1 cup raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Sweeten with sugar if needed, then strain through a fine sieve to remove seeds.

In a heatproof bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together. Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk continuously until the sugar dissolves and reaches 165°F. Remove from the heat, then beat with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Cool to room temperature.

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled egg mixture until smooth and airy. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls. Fold the raspberry purée into one portion and the lemon juice and zest into the other.

Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and parchment paper. Spread the raspberry mixture into the bottom of the pan and scatter with fresh raspberries. Spoon the lemon mixture over the top and smooth the surface. Cover and freeze until firm, at least six hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, unwrap and invert the semifreddo onto a serving platter. Slice and serve with fresh raspberries or extra lemon zest. OH
