AABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, an acquaintance of mine had a problem. Diane’s garden was overflowing and her raspberry bushes were taking over. She invited anyone who was interested to collect a transplant for their own yard. At the time, we were just beginning our foray into gardening and thought raspberries would make a nice addition to the tomatoes and herbs we’d planted.

I drove across town with my kids and chatted with Diane as she dug up a small section of canes for us. As we left, she promised, “Next year, you’ll have fresh berries.” We planted the small bush outside our back door and, sure enough, the following year we were picking them by the handful.

My husband and I always greet spring with trips to the garden centre and plans for what we’ll grow in the months ahead. But we never had to wonder about the raspberries – they returned in abundance year after year. Our youngest kids loved checking for the first signs of fruit, and I have fond memories of watching them pause their outdoor play to eat berries straight from the bush.

When we moved a few years ago, I hoped to bring our beloved raspberries to the new house. But we were never able to recreate what we once had. As fate would have it, I ran into Diane’s husband this past winter. When I told him how much we had loved those summer harvests, he warmly invited us to come by in the spring and take some canes to plant in our new garden.

I’m looking forward to doing just that and, one day, enjoying fresh raspberries from our yard again. This season is all about renewal, and in this issue we’re sharing stories about embracing fresh beginnings, whether through renovating or building from the ground up. If, like me, you’re eager to get gardening, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in these pages as well.

Low-Maintenance BATHROOMS

A spa-like bathroom is often at the top of the priority list during home builds and renovations. In the planning stage, the focus is typically on preferred aesthetics, with limited attention devoted to the cleaning that accompanies the selected design, materials and finishes. Here are some practical tips for creating a space that is hardworking, beautiful and low maintenance, so the spa aesthetic you worked hard to achieve isn’t eclipsed by tedious housework.

SPACE PLAN

The elements should be arranged to provide sufficient space for easily maneuvering cleaning tools around all items (behind, beside and possibly beneath). A curbless shower is easier to clean than one with a curb, since there are fewer corners and surfaces. However, the construction is more complex and not attainable in every application. Ask your contractor.

Weigh the pros and cons to determine whether a double-sink vanity is truly a top priority. It may make for more civil affairs if one party is tidier than the other, or if schedules align and the sink is often needed at the same time. Two sinks double the cleaning required. Incorporating sufficient storage and hooks

for hanging towels and clothes keeps items off the floor and the countertops clear, so less time is spent moving items when dusting and cleaning.

SHELL

The appropriate wallboard must be securely waterproofed before any tile or finish is applied. This is a vital step to prevent leaks, which could lead to mould or more serious water damage. It is important to hire a professional (or potentially face a costly maintenance bill). Your contractor will ensure that a proper slope is installed in shower pans, niches, shelves and benches, to drain water as intended. To avoid unnecessary future repairs, blocking should be installed during construction to securely fasten towel bars, mirrors and hooks. Install an appropriately sized exhaust fan to remove moisture and humidity as quickly as possible, reducing mildew buildup.

MATERIALS & FINISHES

Porcelain is a low-maintenance finish for floors, shower walls and even countertops. Choose a tile with a subtle pattern to conceal watermarks, soap scum and hair. Quartz can be used for countertops, shower sills and jambs, niche frames, etc. It is a low-maintenance, hygienic and easy-to-clean option. When ease is the priority, natural stones should be avoided, as they require sealing and upkeep – and some, such as marble, can stain and etch easily. For tiles on shower floors and walls, choose a fairly smooth texture (but not slippery) so soap scum has minimal surface area to adhere to. A matte finish typically shows fewer watermarks than a polished finish. Most grout used today is stain-resistant and does not require sealing; however, fewer grout lines make cleaning easier.

For shower walls, consider porcelain slabs (such as Dekton) or large-format tiles in 24-by-24-inch or 24-by-48-inch sizes.

Avoid MDF baseboards in the bathroom, as exposure to water will cause irreparable damage. Wood is more durable but does contract and expand as humidity varies, so be mindful of where and how it is used in the space. Bathroom paint is specially formulated to withstand moisture and is easy to wipe clean.

Select a vanity door profile that doesn’t collect dust. Incorporating smart storage into the vanity, such as a pull-out with a spot for a laundry basket, keeps dirty clothes off the floor. A medicine cabinet or devoted drawer for small supplies keeps the countertop clutter-free.

FIXTURES

Toilets with a concealed trapway are preferred because the skirting does not provide a surface for dust to accumulate. If your design aesthetic is more modern and your plumber is on board, a wall-hung toilet might be an option, as it allows for easy cleaning (as does a wall-mounted vanity). An undermount or integrated sink is easier to clean around than a drop-in sink with a fluted lip/edge. Faucets and tub/shower fixtures with a brushed finish show fewer water spots than polished chrome. A single-hole sink faucet with a side lever is simpler to clean around than a widespread or centre-set faucet. Select a tub with a simple shape and without jets. A handheld shower in tubs and showers makes cleaning much easier, as you can direct water to areas that may be difficult to reach. Install recessed pot lights for general lighting, and carefully consider vanity lighting to avoid dust traps (clear glass shows it all). OH

KRISTINE’S PERFECT DAY BEGINS WITH COFFEE IN HER FAVOURITE SPACE.

As nature lovers, Kristine and Phil searched for a long time before finding the right place to build. “We always dreamed of a house in the forest,” she says. “But the location had to be close to the border for my commute.” In a stroke of luck, Phil discovered a densely treed lot in Amherstburg at the exact moment the “for sale” sign was being planted into the ground.

As the couple planned their home, they leaned on a trusted recommendation. Friends had previously built with Drew Coulson of Coulson Design Build Inc. and spoke highly of the experience. “I always like to connect with people through referrals,” Kristine says. “Drew’s knowledge and creativity were an instant match for us, and we were thrilled to get on his schedule.”

For Drew, the appeal of the project was immediate. “You don’t come across lots like that very often,” he says. “We wanted to preserve as much of the natural setting as we could. Kristine’s design sense really aligned with what I wanted to do, so it was exciting from the start.”

Finding balance became a central theme throughout the design of the home. While Kristine gravitates toward clean, modern lines, Phil prefers a more traditional aesthetic. The exterior marries these two sensibilities with high peaks, layered rooflines and pale masonry by Santerra Stonecraft. The home exudes a quiet sense of grandeur as it rises gently from its wooded setting. Affectionately known as Castello Borghi, it’s warm, stately and effortlessly elegant, reminiscent of a Parisian chalet.

Throughout the build, the couple were encouraged to visit the site regularly. Being present allowed them to enjoy the process and make thoughtful decisions along the way. “It was the best of times,” Kristine recalls. “Not every builder lets you check in every day, but we were able to watch our house come to life. We got more and more excited as it went from plans on paper to a finished product.”

Drew offered guidance and helped refine ideas so they could make the most of their home. One of his most impactful suggestions shaped the covered porch at the back of the house. Originally imagined as an open-air space, Drew encouraged them to close it in. “It’s easy to step from a shaded space into the sunshine. But it’s not as easy to create that sheltered space once it’s gone,” he explains.

Outfitted with motorized drop-down screens from Seaton Sunrooms, a fireplace from Forest Glade Fireplaces and framed along the perimeter by an iron knee wall, the porch has extended their living space. “On Sunday mornings, we step outside, start a fire and sit for an hour or two before starting the day,” Kristine tells us. “The smell of campfire, the slight chill in the air and the warmth of a steaming cup of coffee make it feel like we’re always on vacation in our own home.” Continued on page 37

The interior was designed with connection and functionality in mind. An open-concept layout ensures no one feels far removed from the heart of the house and instead of a formal dining room, they opted for a built-in breakfast nook with cosy, upholstered seating. “I love the look of a dining room, but we didn’t use it in our old house,” Kristine explains. “The breakfast nook works well, whether it’s just the two of us or we have friends and family over.”

Kristine led the interior design, pairing creamy neutrals with natural materials that nod to the home’s wooded surroundings. “We wanted to bring the natural elements indoors – stone, wood and organic textures – so it felt connected to the property,” she says of their vision. Wood ceiling beams, wide-plank mid-tone floors from Rose City Tile and dark-stained kitchen cabinetry by Windmill Cabinet Shop Ltd. add depth, while windows with black frames from Martindale Window & Door Inc. and statement lighting sourced at RE-Lighting Inc. lend a contemporary edge. Laubri Creations helped design a home office that features a striking slatted feature wall and floating shelves. Accent ceilings in the primary en suite and breakfast nook introduce architectural interest.

Anchoring the living room and morning room, a double-sided fireplace also from Forest Glade Fireplaces serves as a striking focal point. Though the plan originally called for a uniform stone, halfway through the installation Kristine realized the boxes were mislabeled. With timelines tight, she nervously chose to move forward with the blend of earthy hued stones rather than delay the build. Thankfully, the gamble paid off. The mix of warm browns and soft taupes echoes the tones found throughout the main floor, reinforcing the overall palette.

Food costs have skyrocketed, and being mindful of your food waste is a good way to stretch your dollar.

As we move into spring, try some of these tangible tips to reduce your food waste and cut your grocery bill.

Proper Storage – A lot of food is wasted simply because it wasn’t stored properly. This tip is most relevant to produce, so learn how and where to store your fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs to keep them as fresh as possible.

Use the Freezer – Piggybacking off the last tip, if you’re not going to use something before it goes bad, freeze it. However, if your freezer is a graveyard of good intentions, a bonus tip is to label things. If you freeze something, be sure to indicate what it is and when it was frozen.

Understand Best-Before Dates – Just because something is past its best-before date doesn’t necessarily mean it’s gone bad. Best-before dates indicate the freshness, taste, nutritional value and overall quality of a food. But they are only relevant to unopened products. If something is unopened and past the best-before date, it may still be fine to eat, but always use your best judgment.

First In, First Out – Fairly self-explanatory. If you have multiples of something (milk, cereal, yogurt, etc.), always use up the oldest one and/or the one that’s already open first, before opening another one.

Revive Ingredients – If your celery, herbs or carrots are wilted and limp, try soaking them in cold water for a few minutes to revive them. If your bread is stale, turn it into croutons or breadcrumbs for later use.

Shop Your Pantry – Before hitting the grocery store, make a list, check it twice and see what’s hidden away in your pantry or freezer that you forgot about. There’s nothing more annoying (or unnecessarily expensive) than buying something you already have.

Plan Meals – It doesn’t have to be written in stone, but having an idea of what meals you’re having that week and when you might be eating out or having leftovers can help you buy only what you need and prevent things from getting thrown out later.

Prep Ahead – The best way to ensure food gets eaten, especially fruits and vegetables, is to have them ready to eat. Take 10 minutes to wash, chop and store all your produce so it is ready and easy to grab and eat.

Use Everything – Carrot or beet tops are great for pesto or blending into smoothies. Broccoli stems are edible. Parmesan cheese rinds add tons of flavour to soups. Onion skins, vegetable scraps and wilted herbs can be turned into broth.

Get Creative – Try making meals with things you already have. Shop your fridge, freezer and pantry before buying something new. And don’t let leftovers go to waste. You saved them for a reason, so try re-inventing them into something else.

Francesca Millner once considered a legal career. But her love of designing homes ultimately led her in a different direction. “I thought I would go into law,” she recalls. “But I realized I was deeply influenced by the spaces around me and I enjoyed thinking about how I could change the ambience or make them more functional.”

Graceful arches are repeated in the doorways and in the bold new front door. A two-tiered light fixture with cascading glass beads mixes vintage style with clean, modern lines. AAfter completing her interior design studies, Francesca gained extensive experience working in both residential and commercial spaces. “I started my career at the Michigan Design Center in Troy, MI. Then I moved to a much different market on Queen Street West in Toronto,” she tells us. “I made a lot of contacts over the years and built up my portfolio.” Today, with more than 25 years of experience, Francesca brings a seasoned perspective to each project.

In 2009, she founded Façade Interiors & Furniture, which offers a full range of interior design services for residential and commercial spaces, in addition to lighting and furniture packages. “Our studio delivers interior design, finishing materials, sub-trade support and project management,” Francesca explains. “My firm is inspired by family, function and natural materials. Our projects showcase quality in exterior and interior architectural details, timeless design and carefully layered colours and textures.”

Francesca’s philosophy is simple: she insists on quality, professionalism and never cutting corners. Her company is committed

to craftsmanship, fully custom design and collaborative planning. “I like to get to know my clients and find out what they envision for their future,” she says. “It helps to understand whether their plan for their home is short term or for a lifetime.”

This personal approach is reflected in the elegant renovation of a five-bedroom ranch-style home just outside Windsor in Essex County. “I’ve worked with the homeowners for years, and we’ve become special friends,” Francesca says. “They were ready to build elsewhere, but their house sits on a large, beautiful property. If we renovated, they could keep this amazing location.”

The extensive renovation incorporates several defining design features, including arched door openings, a custom window-and-door system in the great room and the conversion of a bedroom and en suite with wheelchair accessibility. “These changes were very impactful,” Francesca says. “They completely changed the way the home functions and feels.” The exterior of the house was refreshed with natural stone detailing and arched double-entry doors. For the interior, Francesca chose a light palette with rich accents, warm woods, natural stone, premium fabrics and quality lighting. She also curated a selection of designer fixtures featuring warm golds, silvers and some chrome finishes. “Mixed metals can work in a home if they’re balanced properly,” she explains. Overscale chandeliers, defined by dramatic silhouettes, anchor the foyer and dining area, while pendants, sconces and pot lights provide layered illumination throughout the home.

Designed for entertaining, the kitchen invites cooking and conversation. “The original main-floor layout had a smaller opening from the kitchen into the great room. We removed a wall to connect the two rooms, improving the flow for entertaining and functionality,” says Francesca. Rocksolid Windows & Doors Ltd. supplied large windows that fill the space with natural light and highlight outdoor views. A statement island finished in creamy Taj Mahal leathered quartzite has soft amber accents. Matching counters and backsplash from Mondial Granite & Marble unify the space while warm white cabinetry from Mylen Custom Kitchens adds a touch of timeless elegance.

In the nearby dining area, a striking credenza reflects Façade Interiors’ focus on bespoke furniture. “Clients come to us for custom furniture – unique, luxurious, design-specific pieces that are most often made in Canada or elsewhere in North America,” says Francesca. “This credenza was crafted by Domestic Woodworks, a local business in Amherstburg.”

A graceful arch frames the great room, one of the home’s defining features. A Town & Country gas fireplace from Forest Glade Fireplaces has a commanding stone surround installed by Andre Lariviere of Andre’s Masonry. “We also added this beautiful natural stone to the exterior of the house. It’s a stunning feature,” says Francesca. The stone’s light grey and gold colouring is paired with a tumbled finish, creating a gently worn, rounded profile. Floor-to-ceiling windows line the back wall, brightening the space and showcasing the property’s natural beauty. Canadian-made lounge seating and recliners from Façade Interiors hug the perimeter, creating an inviting place to gather.

It’s the surface you interact with every day, the backdrop to your rituals and the anchor for the home’s aesthetic. In design, stone plays the starring role, and selecting the right material is part technical knowledge, part intuition and part understanding how clients truly live in their spaces.

In bathrooms, stone has a unique opportunity to become almost artful, because it occupies such a contained, immersive environment. This recent shower project (pictured) is a favourite. The dramatic stone slab, with its marbled swirls of blush, terracotta, charcoal and soft cream, was chosen specifically to bring a sense of organic movement to an otherwise streamlined space. Against the crisp white porcelain floor tile and frameless glass, the stone becomes a focal point – bold yet refined. The gold fixtures complement the warm undertones of the slab, giving the entire enclosure a sense of elevated luxury without feeling ornate.

8 GREEN FOODS TO PRIORITIZE THIS SEASON

Pepitas

Shelled pumpkin seeds are the perfect addition to salads, yogurt, oatmeal or homemade granola. A source of iron, magnesium, zinc and protein – talk about small but mighty!

Asparagus

Spring is asparagus season, so it makes sense to enjoy it then. Packed with antioxidants and many vitamins and minerals, asparagus makes an excellent addition to any meal. Roast with garlic, lemon zest and shredded parmesan. Blanch and enjoy in a risotto. Or add it to a stir-fry.

5 Peas

These little guys are often overlooked as a nutrient powerhouse, but green peas are a good source of iron and protein. One cup provides about 10 g of fibre and 8 g of protein. Frozen peas can be easily added to a variety of meals to boost nutrition. Personally, I love peas, edamame and some flaky salt as a quick, protein-rich snack.

Artichoke

If you’re not eating artichokes, this is your sign to start. One medium artichoke provides about 10 g of fibre, or 40 per cent of the amount women need per day and 26 per cent of what men need. The canned, marinated hearts are fine to use. They make great additions to salads, pizza, dips or marinades. But if you want a culinary challenge, buy and cook raw artichoke hearts.

The colour green is often associated with spring, nature, new growth and freshness. When it comes to food, green items are typically rich in nutrients, and it is recommended to include at least one dark green vegetable in your diet daily. Avocado

The humble avocado exploded in popularity thanks to avocado toast, but people may not truly appreciate its nutritional power. One half of an avocado provides 7 g of fibre, which is about 28 per cent of the amount women need per day (19 per cent for men). It’s also a good source of heart-healthy fats.

Microgreens

These are very young greens, somewhere between sprouts and baby greens. Their nutrients are concentrated, meaning they tend to have higher levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than their mature greens counterparts. You can grow them yourself or purchase them. Enjoy them in salads, blend them into smoothies or add them to sandwiches and wraps.

DarkGreensLeafy

Spinach, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, arugula and bok choy are a few examples of dark leafy greens. Truly the definition of nutrient powerhouses, they are rich in iron, calcium, vitamin K, fibre and folate. Adding a handful to a soup, curry, stir-fry or a smoothie is an easy way to sneak more of these greens into your diet.

Fresh Herbs

Basil, mint, cilantro, parsley, sage and dill are just some examples of green, leafy herbs. They are a great way to add flavour to dishes without adding more salt. Try growing them yourself (even in a little window planter) to save some money, and always have fresh ingredients on hand. OH

LEMON BLACKBERRY Scones

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH

These buttery scones are studded with juicy blackberries – perfect for breakfast or a cosy afternoon treat!

INGREDIENTS

Makes 6-8 scones

½ cup heavy cream, plus more for brushing

1 large egg

1 lemon – juice and zest

2 cups all-purpose flour

¼ cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

8 Tbsp unsalted butter

½ cup fresh blackberries

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together heavy cream, egg, lemon juice and lemon zest.

In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the butter and cut it into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter or your hands until small flakes form. Gently fold in the blackberries. Pour in the cream mixture and mix just until a shaggy dough forms. The berries will crush slightly, and that’s okay.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a rectangle, 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick. Cut into 6-8 pieces. Arrange scones on the baking sheet about 1 inch apart. For fluffier scones, refrigerate for 20-30 minutes before baking. Brush tops with a little extra cream. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

ICING (optional)

1 cup powered sugar

2-3 Tbsp heavy cream

½ tsp vanilla

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until smooth. Start with 2 Tbsp of cream and add more if needed to reach the desired consistency. OH
