DO YOU HAVE AN INSPIRATION PHOTO, thought or feeling that captures the ideal custom home build or renovation? Most design projects start with a photo or vision that evokes an authentic feeling, colour palette or design style that resonates deeply. In this issue, our four home features touch on the connection between a single inspiring moment and a finished project. Homeowners Chrissy and Guy Pigeon worked with Matt Kofoed of Kofoed Built on their newly finished home in Thornbury, where the design direction began with a trip to New Zealand. While in the South Pacific, they connected with nature-inspired palettes and the seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Swirling Scandi influences with kiwi style, this is a design cocktail that brings light, space and a tranquil minimalism to their finished home. For her own home, Mia Prukner of The Interior Atelier, was influenced by memories of her earlier life – a décor piece or a beloved seating set from her grandparents’ French home. These mindful souvenirs celebrate feelings in the personal space she shares with husband Cameron and their darling son Henri. When Lisa Harbun-Hemeon and her husband Jeritt Hemeon made the decision to move back to Jeritt’s hometown of Meaford, they fell in love with a century home. Its original historical features grabbed Lisa’s designer heart and she has used her talents and Jeritt’s building skills to preserve the past and make their home warm and liveable for their family. Finally, inspiration for another home came from a forested lot near Singhampton. The feeling of nature and privacy drove the design of this new custom home, constructed by Lavender Hill Homes, where every element of the project has honoured that inspiring first feeling. Each of these homes is as individual as the spark that started the process, and each one celebrates inspiration! Enjoy these sun-kissed days,

MY FATHER’S MODERN AESTHETIC extended from the interior to the landscape around my childhood home. For as long as I can remember, he would shovel and rake piles of white gravel all across our front “lawn.” He painted massive concrete culverts white and filled them with bright red petunias – red petunias only – for decades. I must admit, his modern vibe rubbed off on me. I visit local garden centres every summer for my latest outdoor project. I’ve planted urns and attempted rock gardens, vegetable gardens and raised herb boxes. Often, the result is wilting, drooping plants that the bunnies love to eat. I truly admire the planning and nurturing that gardening requires. When we downsized to a beach cottage two years ago, I inherited beautiful but overgrown peonies, tiger lilies and roses. They remain overgrown. I just don't have a green thumb! If you also need exterior help, we are lucky to have many knowledgeable outdoor experts in our region. You can also turn to our quarterly gardening content written by local landscape designer and horticulturist Teresa Matamoros. I hope you enjoy this issue and the rest of your summer. In an era dominated by rapid furniture turnover and trendchasing, slow decorating is emerging as a thoughtful, intentional alternative. This approach uses personal choices to transform your home into an authentic, evolving reflection of you and your family. If you are looking to create an interior that stands out in the sea of sameness, here are some elements of the slow decorating philosophy you can adopt.
FLEX YOUR PATIENCE Instant gratification and perfectly styled interiors have become the norm. Opting out of these online trends and turning to slow decorating can ease the stress of having an Instagram-ready space. Accept that good things take time. Living in a space reveals what it truly needs and helps you better understand its energy. Ask yourself: What is missing? How do you need the space to function? What mood do you want to evoke? When you set limits and decide what you’re willing to wait for, it can reduce impulse buying (and therefore less regret and dissatisfaction). It can also save money and lessen landfill waste. Of course, you cannot wait for everything, but consider creating a plan and then budget accordingly. Once you adopt a slow decorating approach, use social media with intention. A rustic galette of handmade pastry layered with ricotta, chives and basil, topped with heirloom tomatoes. Baked until golden, it combines creamy cheese, fresh herbs and the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes. INGREDIENTS Makes 4 Servings

1½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp salt 10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed 4-5 Tbsp ice water 1 cup ricotta cheese 1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives 1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil 2 egg yolks Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced INSTRUCTIONS Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form, and the butter pieces are no larger than small peas. Add ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Form into a round disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough out on a lightly-floured surface into a 10- to 12-inch circle, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix ricotta, chives, basil, 1 egg yolk and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pastry, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the ricotta. Fold the pastry edges over the filling to form a rustic crust. Whisk the remaining egg yolk and brush over the pastry.

COLLINGWOOD-BLUE MTNS MARKET SNAPSHOT – Q2 2026 IN REVIEW • The low sale was a studio apartment in east Collingwood for $230,000. • 54 (47) condo sales; avg of 65 (74) days on market (DOM), avg sale-tolist-price ratio of 95.9% (95.3%); avg sale price of $618,349 ($601,139), up 2.8% • 91 (54) single-family home sales; avg DOM of 36 (50); avg sale-to-listprice ratio of 96.5% (96.4%); avg sale price of $934,341 ($859,441), up over 8%.
THE BLUE MOUNTAINS:
In the interest of brevity, my focus for this report will be the three key trading areas and home types with which I have the most expertise: sales of residential condominiums and detached homes in The Blue Mountains, Collingwood and northwest Clearview. I also serve Wasaga Beach and would be pleased to provide an analysis for you there upon request. The noticeable March ’26 uptick in activity in these areas continued with all areas and most types of homes up in volume of sales. Values, however, differed greatly by area and type of home (details below). In all areas and home types, the pace picked up and properties averaged shorter days on market. Each month averaged 371 new listings for sale but only averaged 90 of them selling, so we remain firmly in a market where Buyers have a ton of choice and the upper hand. What might the future hold? … Summarizing three national measurements of Consumer Confidence, as of late June 2026, overall confidence was weak-to-moderately negative across Q2, showing some volatility, generally remaining subdued amid economic pressures like the technical recession, inflation concerns (including food & energy prices), U.S. tariffs/trade tensions, and geopolitical factors (ie: U.S.-Iran conflict impacts). Lower confidence correlates with caution on big-ticket purchases and discretionary spending. It bears repeating that the continuing levels of moderate activity we are experiencing will not change until consumer confidence increases. So … what to do in a strong Buyers’ market? - Sellers may do all possible to present their property in its most appealing manner and price it aggressively to compete against other properties, and Buyers may take advantage of the vast amount of choice and lack of competition from the Buyers sitting on the sidelines for the purchase they desire.

Henry David Thoreau, the 19th-century naturalist, once wrote, “Resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” This surrender will foster resilience, acceptance and a deeper respect for nature’s rhythms. There’s also something to be said about how gardening nurtures a sense of purpose and accomplishment within oneself. Planting a seed, tending to it and watching it grow can significantly boost self-esteem. It provides visible proof that care and effort lead to growth. This can be especially meaningful for those of us experiencing stress or anxiety, as it offers both structure and a sense of achievement.

Fundamentally, gardens connect us to the living systems on earth. When we engage with plants, soil, insects and birds, we deepen our relationship with the natural world. This connection reduces feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of belonging. Gardens also connect us to one another. Whether through community gardens, sharing harvests or simply bonding with family, these interactions increase oxytocin – the hormone associated with trust and connection. Beyond what grows, a garden can provide sensory nourishment. Bright, vibrant flowers can stimulate dopamine, the feel-good brain chemical that enhances mood and motivation. The colour green, one of my favourite shades, is naturally soothing to the eyes and nervous system. Fragrant plants like lavender can calm the body, and the scent of rosemary may help improve memory. Nature also reveals patterns that can resonate deeply. The Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the arrangements of seeds in sunflowers and in the spirals of pine cones, reflects an inherent order and beauty in the natural world. Our brains recognize and respond positively to these patterns, adding to the quiet joy we feel while connected to nature. At its core, gardening reminds me of something essential: growth takes time. There’s real beauty in slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world and participating in the cycles of life. It’s healthy to remember that just outside our doors, the garden offers not only nourishment for the body but healing for the mind and spirit. OH

ART of the DINNER PARTY The

EVERY TIME I WATCH ONE OF THOSE COOKING SHOWS that follow a Michelin-starred chef, I think, “That food looks exquisite, but that lifestyle looks like it needs more seasoning.” When I think about the meals my friends and I make, I notice that we’re generally capable. We’ve enjoyed venison steaks, spicy kale salads with pine nuts, vegetable pakoras, and once, a cruelty-free pâté. In case you were wondering, the answer is, yes, my friends and I are intolerable, eager foodies. We won’t be winning any awards, though. We’re just enthusiastic cooks who enjoy an audience. Living outside the city, without endless restaurant options, means we like to host dinners. And since it’s summer, there’s much to be said about hosting the ideal summer dinner party. I consider numbers first. I’m convinced six to eight people is my sweet spot. More than five guests means people always feel comfortable talking, but with more than eight guests, I’d need to make a roast or host a potluck. An ideal location for these dinners is likely one that highlights the outdoors. It’s summer, we must eat outside. I have a deck, so that’s what we use, but a patio, veranda, dock or boathouse would work just as well. In an ideal world, I’d serve my dinners on the deck of a boathouse in the first week of July when the sun takes its time to set. 52 | ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6
Who do you invite? Friends. That’s my thinking. We see family at regular intervals. Thanksgiving, the next birthday, a wedding, graduation, retirement party and dance recitals are all coming. So, carve out intentional time with friends. Tell them, “We haven’t gotten together in a while,” or find something to commemorate by saying, “It’s the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, I’m making lamb.” Invite them for any old reason, really. What do you serve? I’m an overzealous foodie, but I’m sure my dishes won’t matter much, just so long as I make sure they’re grilled. An important part of summer, for me, is grilling. I grill so often that my wife comes to me in September and says, “I’m craving a stew.” When it comes to dessert, don’t overlook the best fruit in season. Wild Ontario blueberries, ripe Niagara peaches and locally grown strawberries are all must-haves. Almost anything you make will pair well with these. After you’ve got all that sorted out, the rest is just like a garnish. Throw on some music, play a game, reminisce, make future plans, have a fire and hopefully people will stay later than they had planned. Perfection is just before people have to leave, and you get a few minutes to look up at the night sky. You might see the very bright Vega star in the constellation Lyra. I’m told the surface temperature of the star is roughly 9,000°C. Sounds incredible for searing a ribeye. OH

Balancing historical character with modern family living was the guiding principle behind the transformation of this Victorian-era home in Meaford.

Over the past two years, Lisa Harbun-Hemeon and husband Jeritt Hemeon, owners of West River Design & Build, have carefully reimagined the century home, layering colour, wallpaper, antiques and custom millwork into spaces that feel both fresh and deeply rooted in the home’s history. “We walked in, looked at each other and said, ‘I think this is the house,’ ” recalls Lisa. “After touring so many homes, this one just spoke to us.” The red-brick Victorian had already undergone extensive renovations before they purchased it. Previous owners had restored many historical details and later operated the home as an Airbnb, leaving behind beautifully preserved architectural elements but a somewhat impersonal atmosphere. “It felt very Airbnb,” says Lisa. “Beautiful, but not necessarily like a family home.” Continued on page 56 ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6 | 55
home & designer Their goal was not to undo the character of the house, but to soften it and make it feel lived-in. “We love antiques and old homes, but we also wanted it to feel bright, playful and welcoming,” says Lisa. Throughout the home, original details such as ceiling medallions, wavy glass doors, decorative mouldings and graceful archways provide a historic backdrop. Rather than leaning heavily into traditional Victorian décor, the couple layered in lighter colours, modern artwork and carefully chosen wallpapers to bring freshness to the spaces. One of the first changes was repainting the ceilings in select areas a soft blue – a traditional Victorian-era detail. Paint and stain for the renovation were supplied by Birch & Benjamin. “It felt like a fun way to bring some of that history back into the house,” Lisa says. For a family of eight, gathering spaces are a priority. The formal dining room quickly became one of the home’s most-used rooms. Wallpaper, custom mouldings, updated lighting and family heirlooms combine to create a room that feels collected over time rather than decorated all at once. At its centre sits a treasured cabinet passed down from Lisa’s parents.

“I wanted the room to have personality without feeling overly Victorian,” she explains. “We wanted it to reflect our style while still respecting the age of the home.” Original doors featuring antique glass connect the space to the rest of the house, while cafe curtains maintain privacy without sacrificing natural light. That balance between preservation and practicality informs much of the couple’s work, both professionally and at home. Rather than approaching renovations with a replace-everything mindset, Lisa and Jeritt focus on identifying what already works and building upon it. The kitchen is a prime example. While the existing cabinetry remained functional and well suited to the home’s character, the couple introduced targeted updates, including new appliances, lighting, a custom-built open shelf over the sink and a fresh backsplash. “Sometimes you don’t need to replace everything,” says Lisa. “A lot of what we do is finding creative solutions and working with what’s already there.” A sunlit breakfast nook adds everyday functionality while maximizing seating for family gatherings. Elsewhere, thoughtful updates have improved flow and liveability without compromising the historical feel. In the living room, Jeritt rebuilt the fireplace mantel to better suit the room’s proportions while preserving the home’s character. The result is a comfortable family space anchored by a large sectional capable of seating the whole family. A recurring theme throughout the home is the thoughtful use of colour. “Everything had been painted white when we moved in,” says Lisa. “It felt a little sterile. We wanted to bring warmth and personality back into the house.” Vintage rugs, collected antiques and contemporary artwork create a balance between old and new. The effect is layered and personal, a home that acknowledges its history while reflecting the family that lives there today. Continued on page 60

The project serves as a reflection of the philosophy behind West River Design & Build. Founded in 2018, the company grew organically from Lisa’s interior decorating background and Jeritt’s renovation expertise. After returning to school to complete her decorating education, Lisa began taking on projects independently. As demand grew, it became increasingly clear that the collaborative approach she and Jeritt shared offered something unique. “Our brains work really well together,” says Lisa. Continued on page 62

Today, the pair work on everything from kitchens and bathrooms to custom millwork, wallpaper installations, basement layouts and exterior improvements. While many renovation projects focus on expansion, they are often more interested in maximizing the potential of existing spaces. “We love finding ways to make a home function better without making it bigger,” says Lisa. That philosophy resonates strongly in older homes, where characterrich details often coexist with challenging layouts and evolving family needs. Having worked on a variety of historic properties over the years, the couple have developed an appreciation for craftsmanship and architectural features that are difficult to replicate. home & designer “There were just so many elements of this house that were interesting,” says Lisa. “The mouldings, the archways, the separate dining room. We use that room almost every night.” One particularly unique feature remains a reminder of the property’s history: an original barn believed to be among the last surviving examples in the area. Once tied to the community’s early development, the structure now serves as a workshop and storage space for the family business, connecting the property’s past to its present. For Jeritt and Lisa, preserving history isn’t about freezing a home in time. Instead, it means allowing a house to evolve thoughtfully, honouring its original character while adapting it for contemporary life. Their Meaford Victorian stands as proof that, with creativity, consideration and a clear design vision, historic homes can continue to serve modern families for generations to come. “This is definitely our forever home,” says Lisa. “We’re still working on it, but that’s part of the fun.” OH

Set 300 feet back from a road, at the quiet end where the pavement surrenders to the Bruce Trail, a home perches on the edge of the escarpment overlooking Georgian Bay. Behind it, the land folds into a private tangle of caves and crevices – the kind you'd pay to tour at the nearby Scenic Caves, except these belong to the backyard. “You don't even hear a car in the neighbourhood,” the homeowners say. “It's so quiet back here.” That stillness is exactly what drew them here. After friends introduced them to the area, the couple – formerly of Richmond Hill – drove the ridge roads until they found a residential pocket backing onto the escarpment. The lot they first wanted had already sold, so they did the next best thing: they told a local agent which street they loved and asked him to put out feelers. He found a 2.7-acre parcel, and in 2019 they bought it. Turning to find a builder, they were set on staying local. “I was a little bit picky,” one homeowner admits. They interviewed builder after builder before confidently landing on Lyall Ralph of Lavender Hill Homes – a one-man operation named for the Creemore street where Lyall's father, who founded the company, once lived. “It started with my father and me,” Lyall says. For Lyall, that solo approach is the whole point. “Custom home building isn't just about reading drawings,” he says. “It's about truly listening to a client's vision and dreams.” He acts as the single thread connecting homeowner, architect and designer – and, crucially, the one who absorbs the chaos. “They hire me to take on the stress so they don't have to.” There was plenty to absorb. The build ran through the depths of COVID, with its supply shortages and distancing rules, yet the homeowners say they barely felt it. “Lyall was always calm and coordinated,” they recall. “Materials were coming in when they needed to.” Lyall credits the relationships he's spent a decade building. “I manage the project solo,” he says, “but I'm absolutely backed by a village.” He leans on the same trusted local trades time and again. He brought on Cornerstones Residential Design Inc. to finalize the architectural blueprint the homeowners provided and worked directly with Dan Barill of Barill Engineering Ltd. to bring the build to life. The brief was a home that belonged to its setting: alpine, a little chalet, but unmistakably modern. “We wanted to make sure the home was fitting into its environment,” the homeowners explain. The exterior tells that story in local materials. Premium stone from Riverside Masonry anchors the base, while hemlock board-and-batten – harvested by Clearview Wood Products and installed by MD Contracting – clads the rest over a top-tier rain screen. The grounds follow suit: Rustic Landscaping, with the homeowners pitching in, leaned into the existing trees and terrain so everything feels grown into the site, not added on. You enter through a showstopper: a five-by-nine-foot pivot door in fiberglass dressed to look like oak, handmade by Bruce Schaus of Fibercraft Door Company, that is framed by an impressive Douglas fir post-and-beam porch. Beyond it, the ceiling soars to 20 feet and an elaborate three-toned hickory staircase – handmade by Barry’s Stair Shop – climbs to a catwalk bridging the home's two upper wings. “The kitchen is kind of the hub of the home,” says Lyall. The homeowners revel in its waterfall quartz counters, full quartz backsplash and commanding range hood, while Fisher & Paykel integrated appliances vanish into cabinetry from Aurora Cabinetry & Floor Centre that runs clear to the 10-foot ceiling. Overhead, custom faux beams from The Hollow Timber Co. add rustic warmth while a wall of windows with drywall returns and window coverings by Salnek’s Custom Window Treatments frames the forest and bay beyond. Openness and storage rank among the homeowners’ favourite touches. The layout is quietly clever. The primary suite and a home office sit on the main floor, bungalow-style, while two guest bedrooms occupy opposite ends upstairs, each with its own en suite and walk-in closet. “It almost has a resort feel,” Lyall notes – and visitors agree. The homeowners say guests keep calling it the perfect spot for yoga and retreats. Continued on page 78

For all its drama, the house spans just 3,000 sq. ft. “It’s technically not a big house, but it feels huge,” the homeowners marvel. Stretching some 90 feet across, with nearly 1,000 square feet of deck and covered porch, it reads grand yet intimate. It’s built for the ridge’s punishing weather, too. The roof trusses and lumber for the project were supplied by KOTT Inc., with installation of the trusses and framing completed by Fitzpatrick Structures Inc. The shingled roof was supplied and installed by J & J Woods Roofing and Exteriors Ltd., while Inline Fiberglass windows and sliding doors from Chateau Window & Door Systems frame the view. The payoff arrived during last year’s ice storm. While the street went dark for six days, the couple's generator hummed along and they stayed warm. “We were one of the only ones,” they say. The insulation impresses as well: they returned from a summer trip to find the house a cool 69 degrees inside, thanks to the heating and cooling system from Nottawasaga Mechanical. Much of the soul came from one homeowner herself, who led the interior design – Benjamin Moore White Dove walls, Onyx accents, black fixtures throughout and locally sourced, chalet-inspired furnishings. Lyall translated their vision through his trades, from C.A.L. Tile & Hardwood's heated floors to Georgian Design Centre’s lighting. Three years on, Lyall still answers whenever they call; he's slated to finish their basement next. It’s the kind of bond he counts as the real product. “I’m not just managing a construction site,” he says. “I’m building the backdrop for a family’s life story.” Will they ever leave? One homeowner laughs. “No! My partner would kill me if I suggested that.” Which is to say, they’re staying put, perched happily in their custom home on the ridge. OH

Just note that if you’re adding herbs, spices, shallots, ginger or garlic, be sure to mince, chop very finely or blend your dressing. This prevents someone from eating a chunk of garlic while enjoying their salad. Flavour boosters to try include garlic, fresh or dried herbs and spices, maple syrup, soy sauce, fresh ginger, miso paste, tahini, nutritional yeast, shallots, red chilli flakes, Dijon mustard and sesame oil. Sesame oil is technically an oil, but the flavour is strong, and you only need a small amount. You wouldn’t want to use this as your sole oil in a dressing.

Summer is here, and while salads are delicious all year round, they’re especially good during spring and summer. Produce is fresh and local this time of year, and salads are a perfect hot-weather food.
If you find salads boring or not super filling, it’s likely you’re not making them to their fullest potential. A salad shouldn’t be all lettuce and no flavour. Salad dressings should add flavour without overpowering the salad. You want to be able to taste the greens and other ingredients. The purpose of the dressing is not to hide those flavours but to balance and enhance them.
VINAIGRETTES Vinaigrettes are one of the most popular types of salad dressings. They contain oil, acid and a flavour booster. The standard ratio is three parts oil to one part acid, but this may vary depending on your taste preferences or the type of oil you’re using. If you remember from high school science class, oil and vinegar don’t mix and will separate when left to sit. By shaking or stirring them, you create a temporary emulsion. Or you can add an emulsifying ingredient like Dijon mustard, honey, tahini or egg yolks, which will prevent the oil and acid from separating. 84 | ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6
HELPFUL TIPS Be sure to taste your dressing before committing it to your salad. Does it need more acid? Sweetness? Something else? Make the dressing in a mason jar. Just shake to combine your ingredients, then easily store extra in the fridge. Always shake or stir your dressing before drizzling it on your salad, even if you’ve added an emulsifier. COOKING OUTDOORS An outdoor prep area is no longer a strip of counter beside the barbecue. It should be a place to chop vegetables, rinse greens, season meat and plate dishes without needing to run back inside. When planned properly, it feels like a natural extension of the house, not a satellite station you tolerate for a few summer weekends. Start with clear zones. Think about how you move in your indoor kitchen and replicate that logic outside. You’ll want generous counter space dedicated to prep, a comfortable place to chop and a sink for rinsing produce or washing hands. It’s all about keeping the process efficient and contained.
SPACE, FUNCTION & FORM
There’s something satisfying about cooking al fresco. The doors are open, music drifts outside, and family and friends gather near the grill to watch and lend a hand. But the modern outdoor kitchen has become more than a grill against a wall. Outdoor prep kitchens are in demand – spaces that work as hard as the ones indoors, just with better air and a superior view.
Orientation matters. Whenever possible, position the prep area beside the grill, facing guests or the garden. Cooking outdoors should feel social. Leave enough room to move safely between spaces and keep walkways clear so guests can circulate without crossing through your work zone. If space allows, add a secondary surface for plating. Separating raw prep from finished dishes is practical and makes entertaining feel far less chaotic. And most importantly, resist the urge to fill every surface. When it comes to colour selection, choose lighter tones or warm neutrals for main surfaces. Pale stone, soft grey, warm sand or muted olive colours reflect light and will keep a space feeling open. Strong colours work best as accents, such as herb pots, cutting boards or dishware. Mixing materials adds depth without overwhelming the design. Try pairing stone with wood details or matte metal hardware. Fluted or slatted wall panels can introduce subtle texture, especially on an island base. The key is restraint. If undertones are cohesive, the space will feel intentional rather than busy.

The kitchen, whether indoors or out, is a focal point, but some of the most important elements are the ones you don’t notice unless they are missing. Storage is one of them. Drawers for tools, a dedicated area for seasonings and cabinetry for platters will prevent the constant shuffle between house and patio. A discreet waste and recycling pull-out will also keep the area tidy and eliminate the dreaded open garbage bag in the corner.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIALS When it comes to materials, durability is essential. A four-season outdoor kitchen will face sun, rain, wind and snow, but a well-designed space will be resilient against nature’s fury. Laminam, a highperformance porcelain slab, is a great, reliable choice for countertops. It is stain-resistant, impervious to strong sunlight and has a clean appearance. Honed quartzite offers natural movement as it stands up to the elements. For cabinetry, marine-grade stainless steel is dependable and easy to maintain, while powder-coated aluminum introduces a softer appearance without sacrificing strength. Underfoot, composite decking, textured porcelain or large-format pavers will minimize slip risk and provide a seamless transition from patio to prep zone.
UPGRADES THAT MAKE SENSE A few thoughtful upgrades will elevate functionality. Integrated herb planters keep basil or thyme within reach. Under-counter refrigeration drawers reduce trips indoors, and matte finishes minimize glare. Lighting deserves attention, too. Opt for task lighting tucked under counters, simple sconces along a wall and dimmable overhead fixtures to allow an easy transition from afternoon prep to evening dinners. PRO TIP: Consider shade, another detail people underestimate. A pergola, retractable awning or even a well-scaled umbrella extends the usability of the space.

Single women appear to be buying more homes than single men across North America. In Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported in 2016 that 61 per cent of first-time and repeat home buyers in Canada were female.
In the U.S., the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers reports that 20 per cent of home buyers in 2024 were single women, outnumbering single male buyers, who accounted for eight per cent of the market. Gabriela Anaya, a real estate agent at Engel & Völkers, is seeing this trend in Ottawa. “A notable number of my clients are single women purchasing on their own,” says Gabriela. “These buyers are educated, thoughtful and intentional about putting down roots in their new city.” Sarah Cameron, Ottawa real estate agent at Royal LePage, is seeing the same thing. “In my own business, we’re seeing more 100 | ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6
and more young women in their mid-to-late 20s stepping into homeownership, and I absolutely love it,” says Sarah, who attributes this to a combination of social and financial shifts. “They’re not waiting for a partner to make a move.” When she asks her younger female clients how they’re able to start the home-buying process early and with independence, they credit their success to budgeting wisely. “It really highlights something powerful: small, consistent choices add up. What you focus on expands – and when homeownership is the goal, their habits tend to align with it,” says Sarah. As far as motivational trends go, Gabriela has found that they depend on the
individual. Some single women are decisive, while others are more cautious and take time to refine their vision. “What I consistently see, just as I do with couples and solo men, is a focus on convenience, long-term value and finding a home that truly fits their lifestyle,” she explains. As high market prices are still a challenge for buyers, it’s evident that female buyers are seeking stability and control. Condominium units and freehold townhomes are among the most active properties sought out by Gabriela and Sarah’s female clients. Their buyers are often prioritizing manageable maintenance, practicality and geographic convenience. “My female buyers are drawn to a mix of neighbourhood styles depending on lifestyle and price point,” says Gabriela. “What matters most is a match between lifestyle, daily needs and budget.” Yusra Rohiman, one of Gabriela’s clients, bought her new-build, end-unit townhome in Riverside South. But, it took a year of shopping the market until she found her prizewinner. “This is called the education period when clients figure out what model or area is perfect for them and what works for their goals and lifestyle,” explains Gabriela. “Buying and investing in real estate had been a dream of mine since I was young, but coming from an immigrant family, the journey was never easy,” says Yusra. “I learned early on to navigate life independently.” When COVID-19 hit, Yusra felt overwhelmed by the unpredictable housing market. Yet, Gabriela’s honesty and sincerity stood out. “She never pressured me to buy. In fact, she encouraged me to pause and wait while I navigated uncertainty in my personal life,” says Yusra. “Gabriela became my sounding board and calming presence through a process that can be incredibly nerve-racking, especially when doing it alone,” she adds. Working with a female real estate agent offered Yusra the kind of support she didn’t know she needed. “Gabriela continued to show up as I learned the ropes. On a street lined with majestic, mature trees, this three-bedroom, Scandinavianinspired bungalow is defined by minimalist design, warm accents and a layout that makes the most of every square foot. “This has always been our favourite street in Thornbury,” says Chrissy Pigeon.

Originally from Oakville, Chrissy and her husband Guy considered renovating their weekend home in Lora Bay after retiring in 2017. They ultimately decided to build if they could find the right lot, as they wanted Thornbury to be their permanent home. As luck would have it, the perfect property became available on their favourite street. “There was enough room to build the home we always imagined,” says Chrissy.

Their ideas for a new house took shape after a vacation in New Zealand, where they were captivated by Scandinavian-style homes. “We loved the minimalism and clean lines,” Chrissy recalls. What began as sketches and notes on paper became the blueprint they brought to Connor Malloy, a building envelope consultant at Supernormal Buildability Consultants Inc. “Connor helped simplify assemblies and construction approaches to deliver a durable, airtight, high-performance home,” Guy explains. Connor collaborated with builder Matt Kofoed of Kofoed Built and Matt Reid, principal C.E.T. of Sketch Design Build Inc., to create a house that maximizes performance, comfort and longevity. “It was such a pleasure to work with Matt (Kofoed),” says Chrissy. “He is trustworthy, a great problem solver and super efficient. Our build was completed in 11 months, and rarely were there days when a trade wasn’t on site.” With over 20 years of experience, Kofoed Built specializes in a wide range of construction services, from small renovations to large-scale, custom-built homes. Matt also provides design and planning, project management and post-construction maintenance. He is especially proud of this build. “The craftsmanship beneath the surface is every bit as impressive as the finished design. A lot of care was taken in selecting the perfect airtight building envelope so the house could run as efficiently as possible,” says Matt. The project went smoothly thanks to Guy and Chrissy’s involvement. “They were very keen to learn about the process, diving right into the details, and the communication between us was excellent,” he adds. The Pigeons enlisted Jennifer North of Jennifer North Design to craft an interior that is soft, warm and defined by clean lines and natural materials. “Jennifer was awesome to work with, and we learned so much from her,” says Chrissy. They wanted a space that was calm and serene, yet modern and functional. “Everything has a soft, warm feel, including our lighting,” Chrissy explains. A grand black front-entrance door opens to a clean, simple aesthetic that begins in the foyer with a custom closet by Sköna Design and flows naturally into the great room. The front door and the tilt-and-turn windows, both from Architectural Glazing Canada Inc., maximize natural light throughout the home. The porch planters are filled with lovely white flowers from Riverside Greenhouses. Chantico Fireplaces provided the three-sided fireplace. The bench and fireplace surround are finished in Dekko lightweight concrete panels. A cosy seating area in front of the fireplace includes swivel chairs that pivot toward the TV or to the large sliders that face the beautifully landscaped backyard by Harrows Landscaping. A bouclé area rug by Mark Krebs adds a soft, powdery touch to the space, while a pair of bamboo chairs holds sentimental value. “My mother was in fashion, so she had a knack for interior design,” says Guy. “Twenty years ago, Mom and I went shopping in Toronto and purchased these chairs. The refined, minimalist design continues in the kitchen, where the natural light enhances a sense of space and openness. The lighting, supplied by Luminaire Authentik, was carefully planned to create a warm ambience with elegant pendant lighting illuminating the large island, while onyx sconces and undercabinet lights create an inviting glow. Striking deep navy lower cabinetry contrasts with light oak uppers and pale walls, painted Benjamin Moore Oxford White, fostering a clean, contemporary feel. A striking feature wall combines open shelving illuminated from below with a slatted light oak backdrop that seamlessly transitions into the flat-panel refrigerator from Tasco Appliances. One of the Pigeons’ priorities was ensuring every inch of space is fully utilized. A spice cupboard cleverly tucked into a corner of the kitchen and a slide-out knife block, both meticulously crafted by Sköna Design, add beauty and functionality to the kitchen. Sköna also provided the Caesarstone countertops, cabinets, vanities and built-ins. The doorless pantry is tucked in behind the kitchen, cleverly hiding storage, food preparation and a coffee station. “The pantry is one of our favourite spots,” says Chrissy. “Guy is our barista, and it’s so lovely to make coffee in this special sunlit spot every morning.” Continued on page 110

The primary bedroom evokes the comfort and feel of a boutique hotel. A custom Sköna bed with built-in storage is topped with simple, light bedding, while a green area rug echoes the natural beauty outside. The walk-in closet hides a handy laundry cupboard, and a cleverly concealed shelf pulls out to provide extra workspace. The en suite embraces the same warm, understated design found throughout the home. The soaker tub, tucked under a window framing the woods beyond, is one of Chrissy’s favourite features. “I love the softness of our tub, and it has a beautiful matte finish. I immediately knew it was the one I wanted,” she says. The window acts as a piece of art, with towering mature trees beyond. Soft lighting under the floating vanity glows while the curbless shower features easy-to-clean, large-format tile. A recessed niche keeps soap and shampoo neatly tucked away. Proponents say induction cooktops and ranges are modernizing kitchens with safer, faster and more efficient technology. There is no doubt that induction cooktops feel like the wave of the future. But are they? Does the talk live up to reality? And are Canadians ready to embrace the technology?

Induction cooktops use magnetism to directly heat metal cookware. A copper coil under the cooking surface generates electromagnetic energy. While many modern electric and induction cooktops may look the same, they transfer heat differently. Instead of radiating heat like a typical electric cooktop, induction cooktops transfer energy directly to heat compatible pots or pans. Like conventional ovens, induction cooktops run on electricity. Gas ranges are still extremely popular. However, Health Canada notes that gas cooking increases particulate matter and emits nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, which irritate airways and aggravate asthma. Controlled studies show that high-flow ventilation (range hoods) can reduce cooking pollutants by 80 per cent, but poor ventilation leads to prolonged exposure. Since induction cooktops transfer heat directly to cookware, there is no open flame or hot surface to burn oneself on. For families with young children, this equates to peace of mind. National data from Statistics Canada shows cooking is the number one cause of home fires in most of Canada. With no flame or hot surface, induction technology reduces this threat. COOKING BENEFITS Many chefs swear by induction stovetops because of performance. Water boils twice as fast as on a conventional range; temperature control is precise, and food cooks evenly. Surfaces are also easy to clean. As a bonus, because no radiant heat is produced, kitchens are cooler and more comfortable to work in. There are even models that integrate ventilation directly into the surface, eliminating the need for an overhead hood.

ENVIRONMENTAL The main benefit of induction technology is its positive environmental impact. According to the Energy Power Research Institute (EPRI), induction technology transfers up to 90 per cent of power directly to the food, compared to 75 per cent with conventional ranges and only 40 per cent with gas stoves. When electricity is generated from clean, renewable sources, the environmental benefit is even greater. Additionally, according to Mariko Michasiw, program manager for Building to Electrification Coalition (B2E), “gas stoves emit greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which can contribute to climate change.” She stresses that switching from gas to electric cooking (which includes induction) is better for the environment. 116 | ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6

It’s clear that induction cooktops have genuine benefits over gas and conventional electric ranges. But are Canadians paying attention and making the switch? “We’re seeing a trend toward induction in the Canadian market,” explains Michasiw. “The induction cooktop market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.66 per cent between 2025 and 2033.” “Anecdotally, I’ve reached out to a local distributor, and their suppliers support this trend,” she continues. “Compared to a few years ago, their salesroom floor now showcases more induction ranges and cooktops. The number of aesthetic options available also makes it more appealing to interior designers who are doing kitchen renovations.” Nonetheless, induction stoves represent a relatively small fraction of ovens sold. The main barrier is the price tag. Induction ovens have a higher upfront cost than traditional stoves. In addition, induction cooktops require specific cookware made from magnetic material, such as cast iron or stainless steel. In some cases, homeowners will need to buy an entirely new set of kitchenware. Finally, those with gas stoves will need to hire professionals to manage the existing gas line and install a new heavy-duty electrical circuit to meet the appliance’s power demands. This can cost as much as $2,000.
THE FUTURE Technology doesn’t stand still, according to Michasiw. “There are new models starting to be available in the United States that are battery-equipped and compatible for plug-and-play installation with a 120V plug,” she says. “This is a newer technology and thus has a higher price tag, but it demonstrates innovations that may open induction to more households.” Induction technology has been gaining momentum for years, and with trends pointing toward increasingly sustainable kitchens, it seems likely this will continue. The combination of sustainability, performance and design makes induction stoves a compelling option for homeowners. OH

FOODS THAT HELP KEEP YOU COOL & HYDRATED You’ve probably heard the recommendation that adults should drink two litres of water daily. And yes, there is some truth to this. The majority of adults require 8 to 10 cups of fluids each day, which works out to around 2 or 2.5 litres. While water is the encouraged fluid, all fluids count towards this daily goal. That includes tea, coffee, soup, juice and certain foods.
Foods with high water content will help keep you cool and hydrated. However, it’s not advisable to rely solely on watery foods to meet your daily fluid requirements. Staying properly hydrated, especially in the hotter months, is crucial for many reasons, but it can be challenging for some people. If eating your fluids makes it easier to meet your goal, that’s great!

Nestled among the mature trees of a quiet Meaford neighbourhood, Mia’s home with husband Cameron Prukner and their young son, Henri, isn’t the sprawling showpiece some might expect from a designer. Built in the 1980s and spanning approximately 1,800 square feet across three levels, the house is modest in scale but full of personality – a reflection of the designer herself. “It’s just enough for our little family,” says Mia. “I love a small space.” That appreciation for thoughtful design over square footage has shaped her career. A registered interior designer, Mia began her education in Paris before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in
Georgia. The combination of European and North American influences continues to inform her work today. “In Paris, you’re learning how to fit everything into very small spaces,” she says. “Then I went to Savannah, where everything was much larger in scale. I love that I have that background because I’m comfortable working with both.” When Mia purchased her Meaford home in 2022, she saw plenty of potential. What began as a simple renovation quickly became something much bigger. “I was originally just finishing the basement,” she says. “Then one thing led to another. We redid the bathroom, replaced all the floors and, suddenly, it was the whole house.” Continued on page 130

As the work progressed, the project became about more than just updating the home. It became a chance for Mia to explore her own design style. However, that wasn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Unlike many designers known for a signature aesthetic, Mia tailors each project to her clients. “None of my projects are the same style,” she says. “I really try to understand how people live and what’s important to them. So when I was designing my own house, I found it almost harder because I had to ask myself, ‘What do I actually like?’ ” The answer came through a mix of memories, meaningful details and collected furniture. At the centre of the kitchen sits perhaps the home’s most striking piece: a massive German chest dating back to 1799. Once used to travel across the ocean, it now serves as the kitchen island, grounding the bright white space with history and character. Continued on page 133

Nearby, vintage furnishings and antiques mingle with contemporary finishes. A French bulldog etching sourced from a Parisian market nods to her roots. Dark wood adds warmth throughout the home. “I love antiques,” Mia says. “But I don’t want a house that feels old. Every piece I bring in has to have a story behind it.” That philosophy extends beyond the objects themselves. One of Mia’s favourite spaces is the dining area, where a collection of vintage mahogany chairs gathered around a round table reminds her of her grandparents’ home in France. “When I was trying to figure out what to do with the space, I started thinking about places that made me feel comfortable and at home,” she says. “My grandparents’ dining room was one of them.” Throughout the house, there is a similar sense of ease. Nothing feels overly styled. Rooms are bright and practical. Children’s toys share space with art. Plants spill across sunny windowsills. Family life is visible. That balance between beauty and function is intentional. Continued on page 136

“I don’t like spaces that feel over-designed or staged,” Mia says. “They have to be liveable.” Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than upstairs. In the primary bedroom, custom storage is integrated beneath the sloped roof, maximizing every inch of available space. A wall of natural wood cabinetry creates warmth and texture while maintaining a clean, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. In her son’s room, fun details and playful patterns create a space designed to grow alongside him. Her home also serves another purpose: a testing ground. Whether experimenting with millwork details, paint treatments, layouts or products, Mia often uses her own home to explore ideas before bringing them to client projects. Continued on page 138

“It’s nice to be able to try things first,” she says. “Then I can confidently tell clients what works and what doesn’t.” That willingness to experiment speaks to her broader design philosophy – one rooted less in trends and more in understanding how people want to live. While many homeowners arrive with Pinterest boards and social media inspiration, Mia encourages clients to look inward instead. “I really want to understand who they are and how they live,” she says. “The goal is to create something that’s unique to them.” And perhaps that’s what makes the home feel so inviting. Not because it’s perfect, but because it feels authentically hers. OH

Add coastal charm to any room with a night light made with a seaside treasure.

Cool-to-the-touch night light with a flat surface Large shell, starfish or sand dollar Bleach Glue gun Glue sticks HOW-TO Using a soft toothbrush, gently remove any debris from your shell, sand dollar or starfish. Place seaside treasures in a container, cover with water and add two tablespoons of bleach. Leave items submerged until they whiten. If using a starfish, remove after 10 minutes as its colour won’t change much. Remove and let items dry completely. Decide where you want to position the shell, starfish or sand dollar on the flat surface of the night light. Lift and apply hot glue to the edges that will contact the surface. Place, press and hold while removing any excess glue. Once adhered, let the glue dry completely. Plug the light into the electrical socket and enjoy. OH

SEMIFREDDO RECIPE A N D PHO TO G R A PHY J E NE L LE MCCU L L O CH
This frozen dessert offers a texture between mousse and ice cream, perfectly balancing bright citrus with sweet-tart berries. It’s the ideal light and refreshing treat.
INGREDIENTS Makes 8 Servings 1 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen) 1-2 Tbsp sugar (optional, for raspberry purée) 4 large eggs ²∕³ cup granulated sugar 1½ cups heavy cream Juice of 1 lemon Zest of 1 lemon ½ cup fresh raspberries (for layering) INSTRUCTIONS Purée 1 cup raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Sweeten with sugar if needed, then strain through a fine sieve to remove seeds. In a heatproof bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together. Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk continuously until the sugar dissolves and reaches 165°F. Remove from the heat, then beat with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Cool to room temperature. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled egg mixture until smooth and airy. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls. Fold the raspberry purée into one portion and the lemon juice and zest into the other. Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and parchment paper. Spread the raspberry mixture into the bottom of the pan and scatter with fresh raspberries. Spoon the lemon mixture over the top and smooth the surface. Cover and freeze until firm, at least six hours or overnight.

It’s safe to say that a love of nature is something Canadians hold dear. Birds are one of the closest connections to nature we have. Whether you live in the city or the countryside, you’ll always have close encounters with birds. Step outside to hear the resident robin singing cheerfully. Take a drive in the country and spot swallows swooping over fields. Go for coffee in town and watch House Sparrows hop around, cleaning up fallen crumbs. Enjoy a weekend camping or cottaging and wake up to the iconic call of the loon. We are a “birdyfull” country. As we celebrate our identity around Canada Day festivities, let’s take a gander at birds that are iconically Canadian.
CANADA’S OFFICIAL BIRD Well, go figure, we don’t have one! We have the beaver as our national animal, the maple tree as the official arboreal emblem and even an official horse – the Canadian Horse. Many people think the Common Loon is our national bird, but it isn’t. However, there is a growing movement to designate a bird that represents the entire country. Canadian Geographic magazine recently consulted ornithologists, conducted an online survey and held debates on this very topic. The top five finalists for Canada’s official bird were the Common Loon, Snowy Owl, Canada Jay, Canada Goose and Black-capped Chickadee. Competition was stiff, and although the loon won the popular vote, the Canada Jay was chosen by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Common Loon
ONTARIO’S OFFICIAL BIRD Ontario does have an official bird, the everpopular Common Loon, designated in 1994. The loon is a fitting avian ambassador for Ontario, given that this province has more than 250,000 lakes, many of which are home to loon families each summer. With its soulstirring yodels, wails and laughs, the loon is the iconic call of the wild and a treasured symbol of our wilderness. However, one of the reasons the loon wasn’t chosen as Canada’s national bird was that it was already taken as Ontario’s avian emblem.
CANADIAN NAMESAKES We do have birds named in honour of Canada. Three, in fact. First up is the already mentioned Canada Jay. Until recently, its official name was Gray Jay. It was originally named Canada Jay, but somewhere along the way, the American Ornithological Union (AOU) decided Gray Jay was more suitable. However, in 2016, a long-time Gray Jay researcher at Algonquin Provincial Park, along with other Canadian ornithologists, successfully petitioned for a change back to Canada Jay. Their widespread presence across the country contributed to their proposal as a national bird, along with their year-round residency, as they never migrate in winter. And they’re not sorry about that; they thrive in the cold. Much like these birds, Canadians strongly identify with long, cold winters. Canada Jays are very intelligent and curious, but perhaps their most Canadian attribute is their friendliness. They’ll pop out of the woods 148 | ourhomes M I D - S U M M E R 2 0 2 6
as you wander along, check out what you’re up to, join you at your campsite and even politely accept a treat from your hand if offered. They are a true representative of our Canadian character. Next is the Canada Warbler, a yellowbellied and bespectacled bird that sports a black necklace across its bright throat. It was named after Canada, as it was first discovered here. Like us, it loves our vast forests – most of its population breeds in our boreal. It’s a much sought-after species by birders, passing through only briefly in migration before tending to secretively hunker down to nest deep in the forest. A true Canadian homesteader. And finally, it tops off its allegiance to our country with its vibrant song – the mnemonic can be interpreted as the bouncy “Canada is so sweet.” The third bird with our country’s namesake is the ubiquitous Canada Goose. This widespread, well-known bird can live almost everywhere, making it omnipresent across Canada. Although they’re hard to miss, these geese faced near extinction in the early 1900s. Overhunting and habitat destruction devastated their numbers, leaving only a few remaining pockets of survivors. Conservation efforts brought the species back due to the birds’ high reproductive rates and longevity. Then, again, due to human actions, they became overabundant. Our urban parks, lawns, golf courses and sports fields provide the precise short-grass food supply they thrive on. We inadvertently made living easy for these big birds, even to the extent that they’ve lost their migratory instinct. And that’s a shame, because not so long ago, the sights and sounds of great V-shaped flocks of geese overhead were a welcome and unmistakable sign of a Canadian spring.

ONLY IN CANADA Next up on our list of patriotic Canadian birds are two species that nest only in Canada and nowhere else in the world. These species are breeding endemics, meaning they winter elsewhere but come to Canada to raise their young. The Harris’s Sparrow, a dapper species sporting a black face and bib and a perky pink bill, breeds in spruce tundra across our northern territories. True to its Canadian heritage, its song is a distinct, sweet, three-note whistle that can only be described mnemonically as “Can-a-da!” The Ross’s Goose, a cute but tough snow-white goose with black wingtips, is our other Canada-only nester. Its very limited breeding area is along the Arctic Ocean shoreline of Nunavut and adjacent islands. While they migrate south to their wintering grounds along a narrow route, they are frequently seen in the company of Canada Geese during migration, far from their usual route. They seem to need little coaxing to discover other parts of Canada, just as many of us are doing these days.
MADE IN CANADA Beyond this, millions upon millions of birds make their way to Canada each spring to raise their young in our vast, bird-friendly forests. Ornithologists refer to our immense boreal forest as North America’s “bird nursery” due to the incredible number of birds that nest here each year. The boreal, one of the world’s largest forest ecosystems, spreads across Canada from Alaska to Newfoundland. Up to three billion baby birds and their parents, representing 300 species, nest or forage here, reflecting an avian diversity much like Canada’s multicultural mosaic. Like us, these baby birds have won the birth lottery by being hatched in such a glorious and free land. If I were to anthropomorphize them, I’d say they’re proud Canadians! OH

DORIS ROSE Doris Rose searched her soul before painting a jarring self-portrait in her charming one-room studio near Meaford. The oil painting on copper, titled Stripes, explores the instability of perception and the surprising link between chronic migraine and ADHD, and how they alter her sensory experience of the world. Doris’s painting has been selected for the world-renowned Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. Stripes is one of 52 works selected this year from more than 1,474 entries by artists from around the world. It is a dream come true for Doris, who grew up in Toronto but now lives in Southern Georgian Bay. The gifted artist also understands the business of art, having built one of Canada’s most engaged online art communities through her painting and educational content. Doris has more than 260,000 followers and 150 million total views across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Stripes will be exhibited at London’s National Portrait Gallery until October 7. OUR HOMES met Doris at her studio as she prepared to leave for London and the prestigious exhibition. OUR HOMES: Are you ready for London? What are you looking forward to most? Doris Rose: I’m just about packed. I’ve been preparing gradually rather than leaving everything to the last minute. The exhibition itself will be a real pinch-me moment. I’ve followed this award since I was a child, admiring the artists, visiting the exhibition whenever I could, and collecting the catalogues each year. To now walk into the National Portrait Gallery and see one of my own paintings on the wall is going to be unbelievably special. What I’m looking forward to most is seeing the exhibition in person and meeting the other selected artists. Many are painters whose work I’ve admired for years, while others are artists I’ve discovered more recently. It’s a rare opportunity to connect with a group of people who share such a deep interest and experience in contemporary portraiture. We’ve already started getting to know one another online, sharing stories about our studios, our work and our experiences with the exhibition. OH: What else do you plan to see or do while in London? DR: Whenever I travel, I tend to approach it as an opportunity to learn, and London has an incredible concentration of museums, galleries, portrait organisations and collections that I rarely get to experience in person. It really is a cultural epicentre for portrait art and realism. I’m also looking forward to connecting with other artists and people working across the art world. OH: Was Stripes your first self-portrait? DR: No, Stripes isn’t my first self-portrait. I’ve painted a number of self-portraits over the years, including another work from my Blur series called The Illusion of Clarity. The Blur series as a whole is rooted in my own lived experience
of chronic migraine and ADHD. The work is about making visible the experiences that are often invisible to others – changes in perception, sensory overload, visual disturbances and the ways neurological conditions can alter how we experience the world. OH: Why did you choose to paint this self-portrait on copper and what was its effect? DR: Stripes is my first painting on copper. Copper has a surprisingly long history in oil painting, but it’s still relatively uncommon. I’d been saving this panel until I had the idea for a painting where I could incorporate the raw material as part of the artwork. When I developed the concept for Stripes, it felt like the perfect opportunity because I could leave areas of the copper exposed. Working on copper came with a steep learning curve. The surface is unforgiving. You have to be careful not to touch it with bare hands because oils from your skin can leave marks, and the paint behaves differently than it does on more traditional supports. Even small imperfections can become visible because of the reflective surface. What made it worthwhile was the visual effect. Copper has incredible luminosity and warmth. OH: Where will Stripes appear next? DR: After the London exhibition closes in October, the show will tour selected venues across the UK, giving audiences outside London an opportunity to see the work.
OH: Why portraits? DR: It’s hard to say exactly why, but I’ve been drawn to faces for as long as I can remember. People are endlessly complex, and every portrait becomes a way to connect with and better understand another person. Even when I’m painting myself, I’m interested in the gap between how we appear and how we actually experience the world. I love trying to find that space between what we see on the surface and what remains hidden. I’ve yet to encounter a person I didn’t know better through portraiture. OH: What makes you happy about living and creating in Meaford? DR: Working in Meaford has shaped my artistic process and ideas. It’s incredibly grounding to build a practice in a small town that is so connected to nature and community. I love that it is no longer necessary to choose between a rural studio life and access to an international platform. Through social media, exhibition opportunities and online, I’m able to share my work on a global stage while being rooted in a place that inspires me. The quieter environment and being close to the bay, waterfalls and trails give me the peace to focus on my work. My friends, family and the community I’m building here have offered so much support. OH: Describe your studio space. What elements are essential for helping you create your best work? DR: My studio is a small wooden building that backs onto woodland. It is on the site of a 150-year-old structure, most likely a pig shed. There is a large area of forest behind, so I often see wildlife passing and I can hear the noise of birds as I paint. The space is filled with natural light and has plenty of windows, which is a
big improvement on my previous basement studio in the city. My sister, who’s an engineer, planned the lighting setup so that it’s very controllable. It’s such a beautiful place to spend hours painting. OH: When you’re not painting, how do you like to spend time in or around home? DR: When I’m not painting, I spend a lot of time outdoors, especially sailing and being on the water in the summer. I also have a growing group of local creative friends, and we’ve recently started meeting every now and again for various crafts like pottery, jewelry-making and collage. OH: Favourite local restaurants? DR: I’d say The Dam Pub is a favourite, as the British food feels nostalgic for me, as I grew up in England when I was young. I really love their Sunday roasts. That said, I love that the food scene is always evolving in Meaford. There are more and more local restaurants opening up, and I’ve enjoyed all of them.
OH: Favourite places to visit and shop? DR: My favourite kind of shopping is for art supplies! I love Upper Canada Stretchers in Owen Sound. They make high-quality stretchers and supports for some of the top artists, galleries, collectors and institutions in North America and have worked on a wide range of high-profile projects. I feel very fortunate to have such an internationally recognised resource so close by. They were incredibly helpful with my painting Stripes when I unexpectedly had only a week to get it to England for the final round of judging. They turned around a custom subframe and frame in a day. I’ve also really enjoyed getting to know the team at Roberts Studios, a new art supply and book store on Meaford’s high street. I recently led an oil painting workshop there. There are also other great local resources for artists in the area, including places like Birch & Benjamin in Thornbury. It’s inspiring to be part of a region with such a strong network of skilled makers and suppliers supporting artists. OH
