In an era dominated by rapid furniture turnover and trend-chasing, slow decorating is emerging as a thoughtful, intentional alternative. This approach uses personal choices to transform your home into an authentic, evolving reflection of you and your family.

GALETTE
A rustic galette of handmade pastry layered with ricotta, chives and basil, topped with heirloom tomatoes. Baked until golden, it combines creamy cheese, fresh herbs and the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes. INGREDIENTS Makes 4 Servings
REC I P E AND P HO T OGRAPHY JE NELLE M CCU LLOCH
1½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp salt 10 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed 4-5 Tbsp ice water 1 cup ricotta cheese 1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives 1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil 2 egg yolks Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced INSTRUCTIONS Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form, and the butter pieces are no larger than small peas. Add ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Form into a round disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough out on a lightly-floured surface into a 10- to 12-inch circle, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix ricotta, chives, basil, 1 egg yolk and a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pastry, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the ricotta. Fold the pastry edges over the filling to form a rustic crust. Whisk the remaining egg yolk and brush over the pastry.

The 3,500 sq. ft. home is located in the heart of Toronto on a quiet dead-end street surrounded by mature trees and nature, offering privacy and tranquility in close proximity to the city’s amenities. “Project Kingsway is an incredible custom home built for a wonderful active family who wanted their absolute ‘forever home,’ ” says Dane Hawkins, CEO of Hawk Property Developments. “From our very first meeting, it was clear they needed a space that looked like a high-end architectural masterpiece but felt like a warm, welcoming haven where their kids could truly live and make memories. They were hoping to achieve a seamless blend of luxury, creativity and longevity. A home where every square foot serves a purpose for them.” Blending a clean, modern aesthetic that meets the demands of family life was no small task. The homeowners gathered inspiration
from a variety of exterior home designs online and identified key design aspects that were important, such as open space and natural light. “We shared this vision with our architects at Rook Architects, who helped bring it to life,” says the homeowner, who adds that the use of advanced design technology and realistic renderings made it easy to visualize the home and make decisions. The architects played a central role in shaping the home’s layout, aesthetic and connection to the surrounding landscape. Before starting a new build, Dane says he spends time understanding a client’s daily rituals, from how they drink their morning coffee to how the kids do homework. “By tailoring bespoke elements around those exact moments, the home naturally became a physical reflection of who they are.” The overall design took its influence from Continued on page 37

contemporary West Coast architecture and European minimalism, styles that bring the outdoors in. “That timeless, nature-connected vibe is a signature for us at HawkPD, whether we’re building a sleek estate in the GTA or a sprawling waterfront retreat up in Muskoka,” says Dane. “Hawk Property Developments transformed the design into reality and helped overcome complex construction challenges with professionalism and expertise,” says the homeowner. “They became a trusted partner throughout the project.” The exterior boasts an oversize 11.5 ft. front door. The brick and stucco exterior and arched doorways add warmth and character. The home’s orientation allows the family to enjoy morning sunlight and abundant daylight from the front of the property, while the rear of the home faces west, offering spectacular sunset views. Modern, oversize
windows from Panes Window Manufacturing look out to sweeping Japanese maple trees in the front and back. Indoors, a blend of beauty and functionality awaits. The couple often work from home in dedicated office spaces. Large bedrooms for the couple’s young children offer room to grow and plenty of outdoor space provides a backdrop for fun. The cabinetry is Egger high-pressure laminate in white oak, and the interior shelves and drawers are constructed from plywood for durability and longevity. “Their attention to detail was exceptional, and they consistently focused on even the smallest finishing touches to

The original bungalow could not effectively be incorporated into the three-level, 8,500 sq. ft. architectural blueprint, so it was taken down, leaving a blank canvas for the homeowners’ vision to emerge. While the front of the house is defined by wood and steel with intentionally smaller windows to ensure privacy, the rear is virtually all glass and black steel. Upon entering the home, one is inexorably drawn into the two-storey living room and mesmerizing views of lake and sky. Though the main living spaces are open, Robert cleverly incorporated a sawtooth structure at the back of the home that defines the living, dining and kitchen zones while maximizing views. The exterior beams architecturally define the interior space, leaving it unmarred by support beams and bulkheads. “The building draws you through the house subconsciously,” explains Robert. “You are pulled towards the windows and the views.” Designer Debra Rigby of Debra Rigby Design had the task of visually connecting individual living spaces to enhance flow while delineating each of them by purpose. The entire main floor (save for the mudroom and laundry area) has seven-inch-wide solid heartwood flooring prized for its durability and lack of knots. The two-storey living room is primarily a gathering space used by the homeowners for entertaining. Though the architecture recalls Mid-century modern, the interior décor leans more toward contemporary/ transitional. Furnishings are in soothing, understated tones of grey, ivory, muted blues and taupe, reflecting the natural world of water, clouds and sky. Continued on page 50

The seating plan is flexible; pieces are stylish but also highly functional. White sofas are upholstered in an elegant, hard-wearing Crypton fabric. A versatile custom ottoman on casters can be used as a footrest, coffee table or as extra seating. A credenza and round side table have opalescent Capiz shell surfaces and add a touch of glamour. Windows are framed and softened by 18-foot custom drapery panels. “The focal point isn’t what’s inside,” says Debra. “It’s what’s going on outside.” The spacious dining area is anchored by a unique drop ceiling with a fluted rim and LED lighting focused upward. An eyecatching chandelier, fashioned from a cluster of clear-glass globes with a rippled wave pattern, hangs over an eight-foot ebonystained dining table (Bermex from Accents Home Furniture), which expands to seat up to 16 guests. Understated Canadel dining chairs are upholstered in faux flax linen. A sleek three-sided linear gas fireplace imported from the Netherlands (Guildwood Lighting & Fireside) can be enjoyed from both the dining room and
the informal seating area in the kitchen. The angled kitchen island has a quartzite countertop and is surrounded by five black steel stools upholstered in white faux leather. Maple cabinetry (Casey’s Creative Kitchens) was stained to coordinate with the flooring. Custom hardware (Emagine Designs) was fabricated in Belgium and coordinates with a black Brizo faucet with gold detail. Tucked away at the other end of the main level is the primary bedroom and en suite. They are as sumptuous and inviting as a boutique hotel. The king-size bed has a tufted ivory linen headboard and reversible bedding in varied textures of linen, cotton and velvet. The tray ceiling, painted a dramatic Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue with LED uplighting, features a modern light fixture of glass and gold-metal tree branches. The adjoining spa bathroom is functional and luxurious and includes a sculptural vessel tub, double vanity, separate water closet and a steam shower with a cedar ceiling. With a view to aging in place, the homeowners included an elevator in the design. There is also a stunning set of glass, steel and wood stairs that access the second floor, which opens to the living room below. The upstairs space is reminiscent of a chic private club: There’s a pool table felted in royal blue with antique-mirror inset panels above (London Glass & Mirror), a high-top table and stools for games, a full wet bar and prep space and a seating area with a saddle-leather sofa and swivel chairs. INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch round baking dish.
INGREDIENTS (6-8 servings) 4-6 Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 2 Tbsp butter 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups milk 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp kosher salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in flour and cook for one to two minutes to form a roux. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly until the sauce is smooth and begins to thicken. Stir in garlic powder, salt and pepper. Add Gruyère, cheddar and half of the Parmesan cheese, stirring until melted and smooth. Arrange a layer of potato slices in the prepared dish, layering in onion slices. Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes and onions. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and top with the remaining Parmesan cheese. Bake for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbling. OH

COOKING OUTDOORS An outdoor prep area is no longer a strip of counter beside the barbecue. It should be a place to chop vegetables, rinse greens, season meat and plate dishes without needing to run back inside. When planned properly, it feels like a natural extension of the house, not a satellite station you tolerate for a few summer weekends. Start with clear zones. Think about how you move in your indoor kitchen and replicate that logic outside. You’ll want generous counter space dedicated to prep, a comfortable place to chop and a sink for rinsing produce or washing hands. It’s all about keeping the process efficient and contained.
SPACE, FUNCTION & FORM
There’s something satisfying about cooking al fresco. The doors are open, music drifts outside, and family and friends gather near the grill to watch and lend a hand. But the modern outdoor kitchen has become more than a grill against a wall. Outdoor prep kitchens are in demand – spaces that work as hard as the ones indoors, just with better air and a superior view.
Orientation matters. Whenever possible, position the prep area beside the grill, facing guests or the garden. Cooking outdoors should feel social. Leave enough room to move safely between spaces and keep walkways clear so guests can circulate without crossing through your work zone. If space allows, add a secondary surface for plating. Separating raw prep from finished dishes is practical and makes entertaining feel far less chaotic. And most importantly, resist the urge to fill every surface. The Fibonacci sequence, as seen in the arrangements of seeds in sunflowers and in the spirals of pine cones, reflects an inherent order and beauty in the natural world. Our brains recognize and respond positively to these patterns, adding to the quiet joy we feel while connected to nature. At its core, gardening reminds me of something essential: growth takes time. There’s real beauty in slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world and participating in the cycles of life. It’s healthy to remember that just outside our doors, the garden offers not only nourishment for the body but healing for the mind and spirit. OH

With two generations of skilled carpenters behind him, John Chiodo, owner of Classic Building Group (CBG Homes), knows a thing or two about craftsmanship. A carpenter at 16, he launched a construction company when he was 20. By age 23, he had completed a custom basement project worth more than $150,000 – four times the average basement renovation budget in the early 2000s. Continued on page 70

home & builder At the time, his company, FinishedBasement.ca, focused on small renovations. His business grew as clients called him back for kitchens, bathrooms, additions and new builds. “We became very high-volume,” John says. CBG Homes takes on fewer projects, allowing the team to concentrate on one-of-a-kind custom work in Toronto and the GTA. A boutique builder, most projects come from referrals, and this reno is no exception. After completing several projects for the homeowners’ extended family, the clients trusted him to bring their own dream home to life. The couple purchased a 5,500 sq. ft, two-storey home in Brampton with good bones and classic details but wanted a contemporary interior. “We wanted to modernize and improve the functionality of our home,” the homeowner says. “The kitchen and bathrooms were outdated, the basement needed better use of space and we wanted the staircase renovated to improve both the appearance and flow of the home.”
The biggest challenge was managing client expectations and a tight timeline. “Trying to narrow down design elements and finishing options, we were like kids in a candy store,” says the homeowner. After selling their previous home, the couple and their four children planned to stay with in-laws during the reno. John’s deadline to complete the project was three months. “We took everything right back to the plywood, moving plumbing and electrical to accommodate a new kitchen and bathrooms,” John says. A simple refresh elevated the entranceway’s spiral staircase and set a contemporary tone for the rest of the home. Original spindles were preserved, and the railing system was updated with modern square newel posts and a beautiful dark walnut stain. The new kitchen, designed by Sky Kitchen Cabinets Ltd., has a transitional feel. The clients chose two-tone black cabinetry. “Those are not pre-finished wood panels,” John says. “It is a custom-painted kitchen.” Countertops, island and backsplash are quartz, supplied by KSTONE, with cool grey veining. Large, polished porcelain slabs from Ciot create a seamless kitchen floor with minimal grout lines. John compares the Continued on page 72

effect to a sea of ice. Glass upper cabinets create openness, while cut-glass pendant lights enhance sparkle. The seven-by-fourfoot island provides plenty of space for the family to gather. The black faucet and pot filler and brushed-nickel hardware from Richelieu reinforce the contemporary vibe. “The kitchen is our family’s favourite room,” says the homeowner. “We spend most of our family time here, preparing and sharing food and hearing about each other’s day.” The family room, connected to the kitchen and hallway, is a dedicated place to gather and entertain. The 19-foot ceiling is a standout feature. To prevent it from feeling cavernous, John’s team added panelling to upper walls and the ceiling for a soft architectural
backdrop. A striking glass chandelier was a housewarming gift and visually anchors the space. Neutral colours and soft, durable performance fabrics create a family-friendly, low maintenance space. “My wife was our interior designer; she selected all the furniture herself,” says the homeowner. “She wanted everything to feel comfortable yet stylish. Most of the fabrics are high-performance, made for everyday life. With four children, it was important to have pieces that look great but can also handle real life.” John’s favourite room is the dining room, where a tiered mirrored ceiling steals the show. “The new ceiling is a dramatic feature that sets this house apart from others on the street,” he says. The homeowner chose a
mirrored sideboard and reflective accessories to amplify the room’s natural light. Dining chairs in soft black suede and a round granite table balance the ceiling’s square lines. In the living room, two architectural columns frame the entry. Blue walls are a bold, effective contrast to the fresh white millwork. Elegant furniture lines, classic colours and soft fabrics make it a quiet, inviting space. Glass plays a major role in the primary bathroom. The clients wanted a walk-in glass-block shower with a connected water closet enclosed in frosted glass. To offset the flecked black tile floor, John suggested a glossy pure-white vanity, quartz countertop and freestanding tub. To satisfy the couple’s desire for a more open feel, John added sliding doors. Continued on page 74

Single women appear to be buying more homes than single men across North America. In Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported in 2016 that 61 per cent of first-time and repeat home buyers in Canada were female.
In the U.S., the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers reports that 20 per cent of home buyers in 2024 were single women, outnumbering single male buyers, who accounted for eight per cent of the market. Gabriela Anaya, a real estate agent at Engel & Völkers, is seeing this trend in Ottawa. “A notable number of my clients are single women purchasing on their own,” says Gabriela. “These buyers are educated, thoughtful and intentional about putting down roots in their new city.” Sarah Cameron, Ottawa real estate agent at Royal LePage, is seeing the same thing. “In my own business, we’re seeing more
and more young women in their mid-to-late 20s stepping into homeownership, and I absolutely love it,” says Sarah, who attributes this to a combination of social and financial shifts. “They’re not waiting for a partner to make a move.” When she asks her younger female clients how they’re able to start the home-buying process early and with independence, they credit their success to budgeting wisely. “It really highlights something powerful: small, consistent choices add up. What you focus on expands – and when homeownership is the goal, their habits tend to align with it,” says Sarah. As far as motivational trends go, Gabriela has found that they depend on the

individual. Some single women are decisive, while others are more cautious and take time to refine their vision. “What I consistently see, just as I do with couples and solo men, is a focus on convenience, long-term value and finding a home that truly fits their lifestyle,” she explains. As high market prices are still a challenge for buyers, it’s evident that female buyers are seeking stability and control. Condominium units and freehold townhomes are among the most active properties sought out by Gabriela and Sarah’s female clients. Their buyers are often prioritizing manageable maintenance, practicality and geographic convenience. “My female buyers are drawn to a mix of neighbourhood styles depending on lifestyle and price point,” says Gabriela. “What matters most is a match between lifestyle, daily needs and budget.” Yusra Rohiman, one of Gabriela’s clients, bought her new-build, end-unit townhome in Riverside South. But, it took a year of shopping the market until she found her prizewinner. “This is called the education period when clients figure out what model or area is perfect for them and what works for their goals and lifestyle,” explains Gabriela. “Buying and investing in real estate had been a dream of mine since I was young, but coming from an immigrant family, the journey was never easy,” says Yusra. “I learned early on to navigate life independently.” When COVID-19 hit, Yusra felt overwhelmed by the unpredictable housing market. Yet, Gabriela’s honesty and sincerity stood out. “She never pressured me to buy. In fact, she encouraged me to pause and wait while I navigated uncertainty in my personal life,” says Yusra. “Gabriela became my sounding board and calming presence through a process that can be incredibly nerve-racking, especially when doing it alone,” she adds. WATER BATH Water bath canning is the more beginnerfriendly form of at-home canning and doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. You need clean glass jars with new lids, a large saucepot with a lid, a rack for your jars to rest on, a jar lifter, funnel, spoon, ladle, paring knife and high-quality fruit and vegetables. It’s a lower temperature process compared to pressure canning, but the combination of heat and time destroys bacteria, yeast, mould and other microorganisms that may cause spoilage or illness. Water bath canning is ideal for high-acidity foods and recipes that call for an acid, such as vinegar, citric acid or lemon juice. These include jams and jellies, salsas, pickles and some tomatoes.

Pressure canning uses a special tool called a pressure canner (not to be confused with a pressure cooker) to raise the boiling point of water to 240°F, which is crucial for destroying potential food-borne bacteria. This method of canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as meat, vegetables, fish and some tomatoes. Once you’ve got everything canned and cooled, it’s best to store your jars in a cool, dark, dry place. For the best quality, it’s recommended that canned products be consumed within a year. And if you ever notice a jar is improperly sealed, the lid is bloated, or the colour is off, err on the side of caution and discard it.
PICKLING Canning and pickling are great ways to enjoy the flavours of summer year-round and reduce food waste by preserving provisions for later. If you’re new to the process, it’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it, but there are some important things to note to ensure the end product is safe to consume. Canning is a way to preserve food using two different methods: water bath canning and pressure canning. Heat is used to prevent natural spoilage and potential food-borne illness by destroying microorganisms and other potential contaminants. Now let’s talk about pickling. Most people think of dill pickles when they think of pickling, but technically anything can be pickled – jalapeno peppers, beets, green beans, asparagus and carrots are a few examples. Quick pickling is very easy and doesn’t require canning as long as you keep the jars refrigerated. All you need are clean jars, fresh vegetables, a brine (typically a water-and-vinegar ratio) and some spices. Once your jars are sealed, try to wait about 48 hours before sampling, to ensure the best flavour and texture. And remember, since quick pickling doesn’t involve a canning method, the jars should be kept in the fridge and consumed within a couple of months. Induction cooktops use magnetism to directly heat metal cookware. A copper coil under the cooking surface generates electromagnetic energy. While many modern electric and induction cooktops may look the same, they transfer heat differently. Instead of radiating heat like a typical electric cooktop, induction cooktops transfer energy directly to heat compatible pots or pans. Like conventional ovens, induction cooktops run on electricity. Gas ranges are still extremely popular. However, Health Canada notes that gas cooking increases particulate matter and emits nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, which irritate airways and aggravate asthma. When electricity is generated from clean, renewable sources, the environmental benefit is even greater. It’s clear that induction cooktops have genuine benefits over gas and conventional electric ranges. But are Canadians paying attention and making the switch? “We’re seeing a trend toward induction in the Canadian market,” explains Michasiw. “The induction cooktop market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.66 per cent between 2025 and 2033.” “Anecdotally, I’ve reached out to a local distributor, and their suppliers support this trend,” she continues. “Compared to a few years ago, their salesroom floor now showcases more induction ranges and cooktops. The number of aesthetic options available also makes it more appealing to interior designers who are doing kitchen renovations.” Nonetheless, induction stoves represent a relatively small fraction of ovens sold. The main barrier is the price tag. Induction ovens have a higher upfront cost than traditional stoves. In addition, induction cooktops require specific cookware made from magnetic material, such as cast iron or stainless steel. In some cases, homeowners will need to buy an entirely new set of kitchenware. Finally, those with gas stoves will need to hire professionals to manage the existing gas line and install a new heavy-duty electrical circuit to meet the appliance’s power demands. This can cost as much as $2,000.
THE FUTURE Technology doesn’t stand still, according to Michasiw. “There are new models starting to be available in the United States that are battery-equipped and compatible for plug-and-play installation with a 120V plug,” she says. “This is a newer technology and thus has a higher price tag, but it demonstrates innovations that may open induction to more households.” Induction technology has been gaining momentum for years, and with trends pointing toward increasingly sustainable kitchens, it seems likely this will continue. The combination of sustainability, performance and design makes induction stoves a compelling option for homeowners. OH

home & builder Nicknamed Grizzly Mountain, the Confederation home is defined by a powerful, somewhat wild presence. On the front door, a wood-carved grizzly bear greets guests with a fierce welcome. Exposed timber beams and trusses, along with multiple front-facing gables, showcase strong craftsmanship and add to the exterior’s sharp appeal. Confederation, led by Andy’s father, Rick Kinsman, has been in operation since 1979. Their specialty is crafting hand-finished, bespoke homes, all unique to their individual owners. Every project begins with an in-depth planning stage. For Andy and Tiffany, this meant designing a home with a seamless connection to the outdoors, space for their three boys to play freely and, most importantly, one constructed with cedar and pine. Building with timber comes with an abundance of benefits. It is liked not only for its warm, natural aesthetic, but also for its durability.

“The home is very structurally sound,” says Andy. “And sustainable. Confederation actually plants more trees than we harvest.” “It’s also very durable and great for kids,” adds Tiffany. “Wood camouflages everything. We don’t spend nearly as much time cleaning.” The family of five takes full advantage of their log home in each season. In the warm months, they spend most of their time in their backyard, which backs onto Sturgeon Lake. “We cook out here and watch outdoor movies – it’s like we're camping,” says Tiffany. An outdoor kitchen, round plunge pool, hot tub and large patio present a perfect space for the family to spread out and relax. The three boys love the large, flat lawn that gives them plenty of space to play baseball or use their ride-on cars. The surrounding forest acts as a privacy barrier, but also gives the boys extra space to explore. “We love to forage from the forest for crafts, too,” says Tiffany. Continued on page 101

Because they spend most of their time outside, it was important for the home to have seamless outdoor access points. A bi-fold door in the great room opens to the back patio, and the three-season panoramic sunroom features a dual-access design. The sunroom, with its wood-burning fireplace, is one of the home’s most-loved spots. Family members enjoy a summer breeze or relax by a fire. A second fireplace in the great room is encased by a floor-to-ceiling stone feature that creates a strong architectural focal point. The arching staircase with black metal spindles also commands attention in the space. It was important to prioritize function in the kitchen. The Confederation design team opted for dual islands to encourage friends and family to gather, eat and socialize comfortably. “We spend a lot of time here,” says Tiffany. White countertops and cabinetry provide a soft, neutral balance against the pine walls and floors. The Kinsmans opted out of upper cabinets to encourage natural light and create a streamlined appearance. The fridge was hidden in the butler’s pantry to minimize clutter. One of the most unique features in the home is the large tree-trunk beams. “This one is actually hollowed out,” says Andy, pointing to the large trunk in the kitchen. home & builder Hidden in the east wing of the home is the primary bedroom. In this space, Confederation used a double hammer-beam truss, which is a unique and complex timber-frame system. The result is a grand room that still feels cosy. The en suite, located off the primary bedroom, is a spa-like retreat with its soaker tub and stunning lake views. Two bedrooms are located upstairs off the second-floor balcony, and in the west wing, a hidden staircase leads to a loft with soaring vaulted ceilings. Every corner of this log home is full of life, but also comfort. After the labour that went into the project, the Kinsmans are more than happy with the land they’ve turned into home. “There’s beauty in being in one peaceful spot, having everything you need,” says Andy. “This space is just for us, which is the beauty of it all. HOW SPACE INFLUENCES MOOD, PRODUCTIVITY & CONNECTION
People rarely describe their homes in terms of square footage, cabinetry styles or paint colours. Instead, they talk about how their homes make them feel. They mention the kitchen that somehow makes Monday mornings less stressful, the reading chair they gravitate toward at the end of a long day or the dining room where conversations linger long after the plates have been cleared. Those responses aren’t accidental. That’s because our spaces influence our emotions, energy levels, habits and relationships in ways we don’t always recognize outright. The key to designing a home is how people will move through it. When circulation is awkward, it shows up in small but constant ways: a tight squeeze past an open dishwasher, a hallway that slows everyone down during busy mornings or a shared workspace that always seems to be in someone’s way. Over time, those moments add up. When movement feels natural, the house supports daily life instead of interrupting it. Some homeowners think they’ve outgrown their square footage, when what they’re really reacting to is a layout that no longer reflects how they live. Reworking the floor plan from the ground up, clarifying the separation between public and private areas and reorganizing how key rooms relate to one another will shift how a home functions on a day-to-day basis. The change isn’t necessarily about adding more space, but making better use of the space we already have. That idea carries through to how rooms visually relate to one another. Sightlines quietly guide how a home is experienced. A partial view into the next space, a piece of artwork aligned with an entry or a softly illuminated seating area at the end of a corridor improves a home’s orientation. Design also influences how people spend time together. Open-concept living has dominated residential design for years, but removing walls doesn’t automatically create closeness. Some of the most successful gathering spaces include smaller zones that invite people in without demanding everyone’s attention at once. In one home, an underused formal living room became a library and sitting area connected to the kitchen through wide-cased openings. Deep lounge chairs, bookshelves and soft lighting transformed it into the room everyone migrated toward. The room found its purpose because it reflected how the family genuinely wanted to spend their time. Lighting is another key element that can completely transform how a home feels. Whenever possible, prioritize natural light by maintaining clear sightlines to windows and select window treatments that soften rather than block daylight. Artificial lighting deserves the same level of consideration. Many homes rely on recessed ceiling fixtures that provide brightness but little atmosphere. Layered lighting changes everything. Under-cabinet lighting supports food preparation, table lamps bring warmth to living spaces and bedside sconces create a more comfortable environment for reading and relaxation. Lighting is often the unseen element that shapes the emotional experience of a
space. It can influence mood, support wellbeing, enhance productivity and foster connection within our homes. Natural light brings energy and balance, while thoughtfully layered lighting introduces warmth, intimacy and sophistication as the day evolves. When carefully considered, lighting becomes far more than a functional necessity. It is a powerful design element that enhances how we live, feel and connect within our homes. Of course, texture, sound and colour all shape how a home feels. Spaces dominated by stone, glass and other hard surfaces can be beautiful, but they often amplify noise and feel less inviting. A home with soaring ceilings and extensive tile is easily warmed up with wool rugs, upholstered dining chairs and lined drapery to soften the acoustics enough to make family conversations noticeably easier. Colour is equally personal. While some people are energized by rich, saturated hues, others prefer quieter palettes with subtle contrast. Most successful spaces aren’t dictated by trends. They reflect the personalities and preferences of those who call the space home. Interior design shapes more than appearances. At its best, it creates experiences and an environment that people want to return to at the end of the day. OH

This frozen dessert offers a texture between mousse and ice cream, perfectly balancing bright citrus with sweet-tart berries. It’s the ideal light and refreshing treat.
INGREDIENTS Makes 8 Servings 1 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen) 1-2 Tbsp sugar (optional, for raspberry purée) 4 large eggs ²∕³ cup granulated sugar 1½ cups heavy cream Juice of 1 lemon Zest of 1 lemon ½ cup fresh raspberries (for layering) INSTRUCTIONS Purée 1 cup raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Sweeten with sugar if needed, then strain through a fine sieve to remove seeds. In a heatproof bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together. Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk continuously until the sugar dissolves and reaches 165°F. Remove from the heat, then beat with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Cool to room temperature. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled egg mixture until smooth and airy. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls. Fold the raspberry purée into one portion and the lemon juice and zest into the other. Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and parchment paper. Spread the raspberry mixture into the bottom of the pan and scatter with fresh raspberries. Spoon the lemon mixture over the top and smooth the surface. Cover and freeze until firm, at least six hours or overnight.
