Is it just me or did summer pass unusually quickly this year? Warm days have given way to cooler evenings as the cosy season begins. This summer I spent time at a gorgeous cottage with no lake or beach in sight. Waterfront cottages have their own appeal, but this setting felt different. Tucked deep within acres of greenery, the home sits easily in its surroundings, with tall trees defining every view. My time there had me thinking about how the land can shape a home, from where it sits to the views that become part of everyday life. That relationship between home and landscape runs through this fall issue of OUR HOMES, influencing architecture, room placement, windows and materials. Tracy and Dan’s home (page 86) captures this connection. They came to Alair Homes with a strong vision for an expansive bungalow on 26 acres of rolling hills. Throughout the space, carefully positioned floor-to-ceiling windows make the landscape a constant presence indoors, framing views that shift with weather and seasons. At Julie and Jeff’s 25-acre property (page 36), Rockhaven Homes skillfully matched existing stone structures with a new build, grounding it in the lush landscape. Julie’s decision to position the kitchen around views of her garden adds a personal layer, shaping how she experiences the home each day. For Marion and Paul (page 56), the connection is expressed through materials rather than views. Paragon Kitchens carried natural wood cabinetry and millwork throughout the space, creating a warm visual consistency. For many homeowners, a home and its setting are fundamentally intertwined. These projects explore that relationship through different structural and design choices, guided by skilled local professionals who translate each couple’s priorities into spaces that connect to the landscape and enrich daily life. The open floor plan has reigned supreme for decades, but a quiet shift is happening. Homeowners are beginning to crave boundaries again, leading to a resurgence of defined spaces. However, because few want to return to entirely closed-plan living, “micro-zoning” has emerged as a movement that creates distinct areas tailored to specific activities.

The Everyday Drawbacks

The Origins of the Open Plan

Visual Clutter: Whether it’s dishes on the island, toys or fitness gear scattered across the floor, maintaining a sense of calm becomes a constant battle.

In older homes, room sizes were largely dictated by structural limitations; load-bearing walls were necessary to support floors and roofs. Yet, these divisions also served a lifestyle purpose. The kitchen was purely utilitarian and tucked out of sight. Dining was a daily ritual celebrated in a dedicated room, allowing families to break bread without the visual distraction of dirty dishes. Parlours were designed specifically for guests and often outfitted with fancy furniture for conversation (not for sprawling comfort – long before screens dominated our attention). As residential engineering progressed, steel beams and engineered lumber enabled larger spans with fewer interior supports. The open-concept main floor was born. It quickly became the preferred choice for modern homeowners because it felt expansive, allowed natural light to spill from wall to wall, maximized flow when entertaining and let parents supervise young children while preparing meals. 26 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

HOWEVER, LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH LIMITED WALLS HAS REVEALED SIGNIFICANT EVERYDAY CHALLENGES: Acoustic Issues: Sound travels easily, especially with vaulted ceilings and hard surfaces. The noise of a television, a kitchen blender or a remote work call can quickly become distracting.

The Design Dilemma: Testing bold design ideas is tricky. Without natural architectural breaks, it is difficult to know where to start and stop a beautiful wallcovering, a bold paint colour or a panelling detail without committing to the entire space. Limited Privacy: Finding a quiet nook for reading, working or unwinding is incredibly tough when every functional zone bleeds into the next.

Enter the Hybrid Home: Best of Both Worlds We aren’t completely closing up our homes again. Instead, residential design is moving toward a clever compromise: a hybrid balance that maintains the airy connectedness of an open plan while recapturing the intimacy and order of defined rooms.

Large Pocket Doors: These allow a space to feel wide open during a party or cosy and closed off for a movie night while improving acoustics. Architectural Delineation: Ceiling treatments, cased openings and arch details visually identify a room’s purpose without constructing a solid partition. A large twoway fireplace or a change in flooring height or material can also define space. Furniture, Millwork, etc.: Fixed architectural features like double-sided bookcases, wooden slats or laser-cut designs. Freestanding pieces like decorative privacy screens or a beautiful handmade textile hung strategically can all create intentional transitions in space.

The Power of Micro-Zoning For those not looking to renovate, microzoning offers a clever alternative. It is about being highly intentional and assigning a dedicated purpose to every corner. To start, determine which daily needs are currently unmet for your family. By creating targeted solutions for those gaps, your home will instantly feel calmer, more organized and more harmonious. Microzoning gives purpose to underutilized square footage and positively influences daily routines. It can resolve common frustrations by establishing distinct zones for remote work, reading, hobbies, children’s toys or intimate conversation. If you have just a six-by-six-foot space, you can easily create a functional vignette. Layer in a small area rug, a floor lamp, a piece of furniture (such as an antique desk or a small tea table), a comfortable chair and a piece of art. This simple setup can serve as a hidden work-from-home station in the corner of your living room by day, or a quiet bedroom retreat in the evening when the TV in the main living area gets noisy. Whether sparked by the necessity of remote work or a desire for cosiness and more personalized character, delineating space proves that a home functions best when its layout matches the true nuances of our daily lives. 4-6 Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 2 Tbsp butter 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups milk 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp kosher salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch round baking dish. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in flour and cook for one to two minutes to form a roux. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly until the sauce is smooth and begins to thicken. Stir in garlic powder, salt and pepper. Add Gruyère, cheddar and half of the Parmesan cheese, stirring until melted and smooth. Arrange a layer of potato slices in the prepared dish, layering in onion slices. Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes and onions. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and top with the remaining Parmesan cheese.

HOW SPACE INFLUENCES MOOD, PRODUCTIVITY & CONNECTION

People rarely describe their homes in terms of square footage, cabinetry styles or paint colours. Instead, they talk about how their homes make them feel. They mention the kitchen that somehow makes Monday mornings less stressful, the reading chair they gravitate toward at the end of a long day or the dining room where conversations linger long after the plates have been cleared. Those responses aren’t accidental. That’s because our spaces influence our emotions, energy levels, habits and relationships in ways we don’t always recognize outright. The key to designing a home is how people will move through it. When circulation is awkward, it shows up in small but constant ways: a tight squeeze past an open dishwasher, a hallway that slows everyone down during busy mornings or a shared workspace that always seems to be in someone’s way. Over time, those moments add up. When movement feels natural, the house supports daily life instead of interrupting it. Some homeowners think they’ve outgrown their square footage, when what they’re really reacting to is a layout that no longer reflects how they live. Reworking the floor plan from the ground up, clarifying the separation between public and private areas and reorganizing how key rooms relate to one another will shift how a home functions on a day-to-day basis. Design also influences how people spend time together. Open-concept living has dominated residential design for years, but removing walls doesn’t automatically create closeness. Some of the most successful gathering spaces include smaller zones that invite people in without demanding everyone’s attention at once. In one home, an underused formal living room became a library and sitting area connected to the kitchen through wide-cased openings. Deep lounge chairs, bookshelves and soft lighting transformed it into the room everyone migrated toward. The room found its purpose because it reflected how the family genuinely wanted to spend their time. Lighting is another key element that can completely transform how a home feels. Whenever possible, prioritize natural light by maintaining clear sightlines to windows and select window treatments that soften rather than block daylight. Artificial lighting deserves the same level of consideration. Many homes rely on recessed ceiling fixtures that provide brightness but little atmosphere. Layered lighting changes everything. Under-cabinet lighting supports food preparation, table lamps bring warmth to living spaces and bedside sconces create a more comfortable environment for reading and relaxation. Lighting is often the unseen element that shapes the emotional experience of a

space. It can influence mood, support wellbeing, enhance productivity and foster connection within our homes. Natural light brings energy and balance, while thoughtfully layered lighting introduces warmth, intimacy and sophistication as the day evolves. When carefully considered, lighting becomes far more than a functional necessity. It is a powerful design element that enhances how we live, feel and connect within our homes. Of course, texture, sound and colour all shape how a home feels. Spaces dominated by stone, glass and other hard surfaces can be beautiful, but they often amplify noise and feel less inviting. A home with soaring ceilings and extensive tile is easily warmed up with wool rugs, upholstered dining chairs and lined drapery to soften the acoustics enough to make family conversations noticeably easier. Colour is equally personal. While some people are energized by rich, saturated hues, others prefer quieter palettes with subtle contrast. Most successful spaces aren’t dictated by trends. They reflect the personalities and preferences of those who call the space home. Interior design shapes more than appearances. Some homes are built around the needs of a growing family. Others are designed for the years ahead. For Julie and Jeff Dool, whose two sons are now in their 20s, building their Halton Hills home was an opportunity to create a stylish, comfortable place that suits the way they want to live now and into the future.

Set on 25 acres of forest and rolling hills, the property had a home and a charming coach house garage with a one-bedroom apartment above, along with beautiful old stone that would become an important part of the new home’s story. The journey to the new build was not a straight one. When the couple purchased the property in 2021, they initially considered a major renovation. After exploring several options and navigating a challenging experience with another builder, they found their way to Rockhaven Homes. “I met Jeff and Julie in a transition period during their dream from renovation to tear down and rebuild,” says Jesse Grin, principal at Rockhaven. “Preliminary plans were discussed and a ‘financial forecast’ was presented. With this forecast, Jeff, Julie, Rob Vanderwoerd of Elevate Home Design and myself worked together to enable the dream to meet the dollars.” Continued on page 38

home & builder It was a partnership that came together naturally. “Rockhaven came to us highly recommended and, after meeting Jesse for the first time, how can you not love him,” says Julie. “He gave us a binder of other homes they had worked on and said we could reach out to any of them. We talked about budget and timelines and Rockhaven assured us they could deliver on both. We moved into the house on Feb. 13, 2026 – the exact day Jesse said we would.” After the uncertainty of their earlier building experience, that level of confidence and follow-through meant a great deal. “They really seemed to understand us and our vision,” says Jeff. Rockhaven site manager Jordan Kirby and executive assistant of design and construction Melissa Macumber were integral to the project, providing practical solutions and guidance throughout the build. The balance between style and practicality is evident throughout the home. The design is modern without feeling stark, with clean lines, warm materials and details that make the space comfortable and easy to live in. The exterior was designed to complement the existing coach house. After spending time walking the yard at King Masonry Yard Ltd., the Rockhaven team selected multiple skids of stone to create a custom fivestone blend. Castle Masonry installed the stone, while Maibec board-andbatten wood siding and traditional wood shakes, installed by Bramdon Renovations, add texture and contrast. Marlad Roofing & Siding Inc. applied IKO shingles to the roof, while black Gemini casement windows from Dashwood Windows and Doors and a painted eight-foot front door from Therma-Tru Doors complete the graceful exterior. Inside, the couple’s vision continues with a beautiful mix of natural materials and modern finishes. Oak hardwood flooring from Bigelow Flooring runs throughout the home, creating a warm foundation. Interior doors and trim from Northfield Trim & Door are paired with matte black levers and square flush pulls for a clean, contemporary look. To the left of the entry, the mudroom and laundry room area features a charming dog-wash station, which Julie considered essential for life with their pup Kai and 25 acres to explore. Rounding out this area of the home are a light-filled office, powder room, comfortable guest bedroom and a serene

primary suite with a spa-like en suite that features a full tile wall behind the vanities. Wall-mounted gold fixtures from The Ensuite Bath & Kitchen Showrooms stand out beautifully against the tile, adding a refined finishing touch. Graniteworx supplied the stone countertops. Stairs and railings leading to the currently unfinished basement were built by The Stairworks Ltd. and feature a craftsman newel post, black metal balusters and a contemporary handrail. In the great room, custom Douglas fir rafters were designed by Rockhaven, adding another layer of warmth to the interior.

In the front-facing kitchen, cabinetry by Cubit Kitchens in Benjamin Moore Natural Cream and stone countertops from Graniteworx create a calm, luxurious backdrop. Caplan’s Appliances supplied the appliances that elevate the space. A butler’s pantry is chic and functional, with a pocket door offering a discreet way to tuck away the mess when entertaining. The kitchen was designed around more than beauty and function. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the surrounding trees, while a fireplace from Bast Home Comfort creates a natural gathering point. Designed for both entertaining and quiet evenings at home, the space is one of the home’s defining features, creating a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The process was made easier by a team that understood the importance of listening, says Julie. She credits Terri Morris, designer and owner of Benjamin Moore, A Home Inspired, for helping her make decisions and think outside the box. She also praises Melissa at Rockhaven for patiently finding ways to bring her ideas to life. “I also feel like we hit the jackpot with Jordan as our site foreman. For Jesse, the success of the home is most evident in the way its central living spaces come together. “The interconnection between the kitchen and great room and the outdoor living space stands out to us as a highlight,” says Jesse. “Thought, reflection and purpose guided everyone to make this space ideal for Jeff and Julie. In 2022, the couple decided it was time to build a home that better suited the next stage of their lives. They turned to their trusted builder, Domm Construction Ltd., to build a 2,800 sq. ft. three-bedroom modern bungalow filled with natural light, oversize windows and a layout that is as functional as it is stylish. With the home’s structure complete, the couple turned their attention to the details that would fully bring their vision to life. Luxury appliance specialists AMG Studios, which supplied the home’s premium appliances, recommended Paragon Kitchens for the custom cabinetry and interior millwork. an easy one. “I walked into Paragon’s showroom with no appointment, and I immediately knew it was the right fit,” says Marion. “Everything was perfect, from the receptionist to the installers.” For more than 40 years, Paragon has been creating custom, curated kitchens for homeowners in Guelph and the surrounding area. Principals Aileen and Mike Brown are committed to exceeding client expectations by combining intentional design with high-performing products, executed with impeccable installation. While Paragon is well-known for designing exceptional kitchens, its projects often include custom millwork, lighting design and integrated cabinetry throughout the home. For Paragon senior designer Ashley Saywell, the project extended far beyond designing a kitchen. “Custom cabinetry was simply the starting point,” she says. “Our goal was to create a home where every room felt connected. The materials, proportions and details needed to work together so the house felt calm, cohesive and intentional from the moment you walked through the front door.” Ashley worked closely with Domm Construction to refine several architectural details to better reflect Marion’s vision. The changes included enlarging the foyer closet, incorporating the pantry into the kitchen rather than accessing it through a pocket door and finishing the backsplash around the kitchen sink with a mitred return for a clean, seamless look. Rather than approaching each space independently, Ashley developed a consistent design language that carries throughout the home. Repetition became a guiding principle, from the restrained palette of warm oak, matte black finishes and textured stone to the thoughtful use of floating cabinetry, architectural slatted walls and carefully layered lighting. “A big part of the success of this project was Marion,” says Ashley. “She came to us with a strong vision and a sense of style and aesthetic. She just needed the right partner to guide and support her.” Continued on page 60

Paragon’s custom craftsmanship is woven throughout every room in the house. “When you have a clean slate, working to create these unique spaces is an amazing opportunity,” says Ashley, adding that Marion wanted a modern, cohesive design with a European flavour. “We focused on clean sightlines and repetition instead of mixing and matching. This showcases the whole design rather than details standing out.” The home’s signature design begins in the foyer with a custom curved mirror, floating console and funky geometric light set against a slatted wood panel. “Getting the curve correct on the mirror was challenging, but it was a great opportunity to build something custom to fit the space,” says Ashley. She also customized the powder room with black floating cabinetry and statement pendant lighting. A fluted accent wall, white vessel sink and custom backlit mirror add interest. The thoughtful repetition of materials and details creates a unified feel throughout the home. In the en suite, floating vanities, black fixtures from Brizo and warm woods echo features found in the powder room and kitchen. In the primary bedroom, a custom makeup table is anchored at one end by a tall, integrated cabinet. “Your eye is drawn across the table as it intersects with the cabinet,” explains Ashley. A full headboard with slatted accents, floating nightstands and matching pendants mirror design elements in other areas of the home. In the kitchen, Marion envisioned a bespoke island that balanced beauty and practicality. “She wanted to push the limits and create something different, and the island is such a fun feature. It has a split-level design with a cantilevered countertop integrated with iron supports hidden in the cabinetry.” Material selection played an equally important role in achieving the home’s timeless aesthetic. Miralis cabinetry finished in ultramatte FENIX was selected for its refined appearance, durability and tactile quality, while Dekton porcelain surfaces were repeated throughout the home, from the kitchen countertops and backsplash to the fireplace bases. “We also chose a restricted colour palette to keep things simple,” says Ashley. The kitchen’s high ceiling required a thoughtful approach to lighting. “Layered lighting helps define the space, drawing the eye downward while providing task, ambient and accent illumination,” says Ashley. She used lighting in each room to elevate the design without overwhelming it. In the nearby dining area, a glass display cabinet with integrated lighting is positioned off-centre on a dark console. Backlit mirrors glow softly while statement pendants add interest. Continued on page 64

Repetition of slats in the mudroom, front hallway and other areas creates consistency. In the great room, the television is flanked by a custom, floor-to-ceiling fireplace and cabinetry with open shelving and integrated lighting. Ashley credits much of the project’s success to the collaborative relationship she developed with Marion throughout the design process. “Marion came to us with a strong vision and great instincts,” she says. “Our role was to refine those ideas, solve the details and ensure every decision contributed to the bigger picture.” For Marion, that’s exactly what made the experience memorable. “This home truly represents us,” she says. “Ashley understood what we wanted to achieve and helped bring it to life in ways we never imagined.” OH

PICK THE PERFECT PUMPKINS When planning your display, consider the full footprint of your porch from the ground up to your front door, including steps and railings. Treat each step as a natural layer; placing pumpkins at various heights will instantly add visual impact and create a fuller look. A well-balanced display starts with variety. Look for unique heirloom or hybrid pumpkins like Cinderella (vibrant with a classic shape like Cinderella’s carriage), Lumina (bright white and smooth, often referred to as having a ghostly appearance), Porcelain Doll (pretty pale pink colouring) or Blue Doll (grey-blue or teal-blue hue with a flattened ornamental shape). MUMS THE WORD No fall porch is complete without hardy seasonal blooms. Chrysanthemums are classic for a reason, offering rich colour and staying power, while ornamental cabbage and kale add texture that can last well into the first frost, even carrying your display into the holiday season. Choose planters that work well with your home’s style, such as baskets, terracotta urns or autumn-themed pots, to anchor your arrangement. When grouping pumpkins, the rule of odd numbers still applies, but think of it in layers: a planter can act as one element in a grouping of three or five. For example, use one planter with two pumpkins. Finish off your fall foliage by hanging a grapevine wreath with magnolia leaves, eucalyptus or olive branches on your door.

Arrange your pumpkins in odd numbers – groupings of three, five or seven tend to feel more naturally aligned with the rules of thumb for home decorating. WATER BATH Water bath canning is the more beginnerfriendly form of at-home canning and doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. You need clean glass jars with new lids, a large saucepot with a lid, a rack for your jars to rest on, a jar lifter, funnel, spoon, ladle, paring knife and high-quality fruit and vegetables. It’s a lower temperature process compared to pressure canning, but the combination of heat and time destroys bacteria, yeast, mould and other microorganisms that may cause spoilage or illness. Water bath canning is ideal for high-acidity foods and recipes that call for an acid, such as vinegar, citric acid or lemon juice. These include jams and jellies, salsas, pickles and some tomatoes.

Pressure canning uses a special tool called a pressure canner (not to be confused with a pressure cooker) to raise the boiling point of water to 240°F, which is crucial for destroying potential food-borne bacteria. This method of canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as meat, vegetables, fish and some tomatoes. Once you’ve got everything canned and cooled, it’s best to store your jars in a cool, dark, dry place. For the best quality, it’s recommended that canned products be consumed within a year. And if you ever notice a jar is improperly sealed, the lid is bloated, or the colour is off, err on the side of caution and discard it.

PICKLING Canning and pickling are great ways to enjoy the flavours of summer year-round and reduce food waste by preserving provisions for later. If you’re new to the process, it’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it, but there are some important things to note to ensure the end product is safe to consume. Canning is a way to preserve food using two different methods: water bath canning and pressure canning. Heat is used to prevent natural spoilage and potential food-borne illness by destroying microorganisms and other potential contaminants. Air is driven out of the jars during heating, and a vacuum seal forms as they cool, preventing air or microorganisms from entering once the lids are on. 2 ||ourhomes 78 ourhomes F FAAL L L 2 20 02 26 6

Now let’s talk about pickling. Most people think of dill pickles when they think of pickling, but technically anything can be pickled – jalapeno peppers, beets, green beans, asparagus and carrots are a few examples. Quick pickling is very easy and doesn’t require canning as long as you keep the jars refrigerated. All you need are clean jars, fresh vegetables, a brine (typically a water-and-vinegar ratio) and some spices. Once your jars are sealed, try to wait about 48 hours before sampling, to ensure the best flavour and texture. And remember, since quick pickling doesn’t involve a canning method, the jars should be kept in the fridge and consumed within a couple of months. Most people start birding naked. But it’s not what you’re thinking. For whatever reason, someone came up with the term “naked birding” to describe birding without binoculars. It also includes birding without cameras, field guides, Merlin, eBird, spotting scopes or a phone loaded with bird apps and notifications set to bird alerts. In other words, without the full inventory of paraphernalia today’s birders don’t leave home without. 84 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

You were likely birding naked the first time you noticed a bird. You weren’t intentionally looking for birds, but one day something caught your eye. You heard a song, noticed a movement, spotted a bird that happened to land nearby. You gave it a good once-over with your bare eyes. Perhaps there was something about this raw look that made you want to know what kind of bird you were looking at. It was your first time being a bare-naked birder.

NAKED FEEDER WATCH If the birding bug does bite or even nibbles at you gently, you can often continue to pursue birds nakedly by putting up a feeder. You don’t need binoculars to watch birds just outside your window. Binoculars are, in fact, sometimes a hindrance, as their narrow field of view minimizes the wider field of activity. While some species sit and sample the seeds, others beeline in from any direction and grab-and-go with a single seed. Sorting out the feeding styles helps you understand the species. Chickadees and nuthatches zip in and out; the jays, goldfinches and woodpeckers stay put for a bit. Soon, even without binoculars, you’ll be familiar with at least 10 species.

Apparently, there actually is a Naked Hiking Day, celebrated universally on the summer solstice, but this is not what we’re talking about here. Birding naked on your daily walk or weekly hike is a whole different thing. You’ll be au naturel in the birding sense – fully clothed – but toting no more than your water bottle. If your walk is on a trail, you’ll enjoy a range of bird watching and hearing along the way. You’ll be surrounded by songs from birds perched in trees, all within close enough range that you can usually identify them with your naked eye or tuned-in ears. I still remember finding, without binoculars, my very first, very beautiful Bay-breasted Warbler on a walk. It was a personal best for me as a serious newbie birder!

Birding back in the day didn’t look the same as it does today. Then, birders sallied forth with gear that amounted to nothing more than binoculars and a field guide. They were partially-naked birders! A bird was identified by flipping through your Peterson guide and comparing it with other birds on the page. Birdsong was learned from a vinyl LP record album; rare bird alerts were a phone pyramid – the finder phoned two people, who phoned two people, etc. (am I really that old). Province-wide bird news came from a weekly column in The Globe and Mail. To hear birdsong better, you cupped your hands around your ears. No one carried a long-lensed camera.

NAKED DRIVING

But things have changed. The LP record progressed to a tape, then a CD and now a variety of apps on your phone. Provincially, rare bird alerts were gleaned from the always-outdated, Ontario-wide hotline and an email listserv. Alerts now come from any number of sources: real-time WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger, Discord groups and eBird postings, each with its own urgent notification sound on your ever-present cell phone. The bird ID tools, tech and aids at your disposal go way beyond the seminaked birding of not that long ago. The learning curve was much different, too. Birds could not be ID’ed via multiple pictures fired off in the field and later pulled up on your computer screen for a slow and studied identification. You couldn’t ask for “ID please” on Facebook (and receive random, sometimes ridiculous suggestions by the way). Birds heard in the field were not recorded and instantly identified by Merlin.

Some of your best naked birding can be from your car while on a country drive, a road trip, driving to work or simply running errands. With binoculars left at home or tucked away in the back seat, and eyes (mostly) on the road, it’s still easy enough to catch good glimpses of birds as you roll along. On rural drives, roadside telephone poles are great for perching Red-tailed Hawks, or in winter, a most coveted Snowy Owl (don’t park below the pole). Flocks of various species congregate on the telephone wires. Bluebirds, sparrows and meadowlarks perch on fenceposts. Roll down your window and hear a Bobolink’s burbling medley from the pasture fields. And if you dare to quickly put your eyes to the skies, you’ll likely spot a teetering Turkey Vulture or a soaring hawk up in the blue.

PROS AND CONS Perhaps back then, the partially-naked birders took more time to study the bird, its habitat, activity and field marks. Perhaps they listened more intently to the song to commit it and the sighting to memory for later identification back home, when tapes and reference books were consulted. Or does today’s instant ID gratification of a bird’s species and song build your birding knowledge and skills faster and more accurately? For one, these techy tools certainly open the field of birding to the wider population, given the amazing popularity of Merlin and other birding apps. And they make the introduction to the joys of birding simple and accessible. But birding naked heightens the acuity of your most essential birding skills – your eyes and ears. With no binoculars, camera, Merlin or identification apps, you simply notice a bird, focus on what it looks like and what it’s doing, what habitat it’s hanging in and how small, medium or large it is. This lays a solid foundation for birding observation skills. A quick and easy ID pop-up from Merlin is only a start; continued study through observation and listening turns you into a real birder. Really, nothing can replace the experienced eye or ear. And just like the days of naked birding, going birding with an experienced birder is still one of the best ways to learn more. Regardless of whether you’re birding naked or fully teched out, whatever your style of birding, as a current popular meme says: “Don’t ever let anyone talk you out of that 30-minute birding walk. Those two hours could be the best five hours of your day!” But please, keep your clothes on. OH

After purchasing their 26-acre property just north of Mount Forest, Tracy and Dan walked the land to find the ideal site for their future home. They found the perfect spot, set far enough back from the main road to feel private and overlooking rolling hills with room to create trails to enjoy with their dogs. From that vantage point, it was easy to visualize a lightfilled home with a French influence they could enjoy for years to come.

With a strong vision for their future home and plans already largely complete, the couple began searching for a custom builder. An earlier consultation with another builder left them disappointed, but an online search led them to Alair East Huron and partner Ben Freeburn. “It was obvious very early on that Ben was a genuine individual with a straightforward approach,” says Tracy. The connection worked both ways. Ben, partner Scott Koeslag and project manager Matt Benson were immediately interested in the design and the couple’s enthusiasm for the project. Planning began in 2021 and construction got underway in April 2022. Ten months later, the couple moved in. The completed plans established the direction, but working through the many decisions became a collaborative process. Tracy and Dan remained closely involved as Ben and Scott refined the plans, obtained permits and prepared for construction. That joint effort continued once work began, particularly when questions arose or decisions affected the design. “Whenever there was an issue or doubt about a particular detail, no one guessed or made decisions they knew we would want to be engaged in,” says Tracy, adding that they felt their ideas were being heard and that Alair understood how important those details were to the finished home. The graceful bungalow now sits naturally in its rural surroundings, with landscaping by Robertson Landscaping creating a polished sophistication. Its pale stone exterior features French-inspired arch-top dormers, layered rooflines and matching curves on the front door and selected windows. A detached garage provides practical space for Dan’s tractor. Inside, Tracy took the lead on the design and décor. Her style is crisp and chic, but not limited to one particular look. French influences mix with dark wood antiques and pieces sourced locally, bringing warmth and personality to the bright interior. “The home is very pretty,” she says. “It’s full of light and takes advantage of the beautiful landscape views in the surrounding area. There are countless places to look and discover yet another detail.” A custom wood front door from Desboro Doors makes an impactful first impression. Large glass panels bring light into the entry, where herringbone hardwood and a custom barrel ceiling set the polished tone for the rooms beyond. Wood and textured-glass

doors open from the foyer into an office, continuing the mix of natural materials and refined finishes. Statement lighting adds drama throughout the home while helping define individual areas within the large, open main-floor plan. Chandeliers, sculptural pendants and brass fixtures work with the furniture placement to give each space its own character. The kitchen was designed on a generous scale for easy entertaining. White custom cabinetry by Johnson Woodworks is warmed by the island’s natural wood base and turned legs. Stone countertops, twin pendant lights and a brass pot filler add contrast, while the large range hood creates a strong focal point. The adjoining scullery provides additional cabinetry, a farmhouse sink and a large arched window that brings in plenty of natural light. The bright window also provides an ideal place for Tracy to display her collection of orchids. “I love the kitchen and extended scullery,” says Tracy. “The finishes, particularly the stucco range hood, are an immediate wow factor for the space.” Continued on page 90

In the vaulted living room, exposed wood beams and stone feature walls add warmth while built-in cabinetry and a central fireplace anchor the space. In the primary bathroom, a freestanding tub sits in front of a large window overlooking the property, while a glass shower features brass fixtures. Softly patterned tile, floor-to-ceiling drapery and a wood armoire add warmth to the space. The primary bedroom is comfy and serene. An adjoining screened-in lounge area wrapped in windows provides a quiet place to relax and enjoy the surrounding landscape. A fully finished basement expands the living space with bedrooms, bathrooms and a television area. It also includes a studio for Tracy, a talented artist whose work can be found throughout the home. Tracy says the quality of the trades reflects the relationships Alair has built with each of them. “In total honesty, every single trade was amazing. Good people seem to attract good people.” For Scott and Ben, clear and consistent communication was essential to making the experience work for everyone involved. “Building a home is a very personal experience and usually a big investment,” says Ben. “It’s great when we can make it a low-stress and enjoyable experience together.” Continued on page 94

What is a Green Roof? Green roofs are artificial ecosystems that provide a nature-based solution to environmental challenges such as climate change and the urban heat island. Green roofs, also known as living roofs, vegetated roofs or eco-roofs, consist of plants established on top of buildings – from small sheds, garages or houses to major installations on commercial buildings (like the Mountain Equipment Company’s Vancouver head office and Toronto’s City Hall). A green roof system is

an extension of the existing roof that includes, at a minimum, highquality waterproofing, a root-repellent system, a drainage system, filter cloth, a growing medium and plants. Green roofs are not new. They have been around since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (600 BC) in what is now Iraq. Sod roof buildings were used in Norway by the Vikings around 600-1,000 CE and are still in use today. Continued on page 98

Why a Green Roof? There are many, many benefits to having a green roof, and some of those benefits in the 21st century are the same as in ancient times. There are some big differences, too. GREEN ROOFS AID IN: The conservation of both cooling and heating energy The deposition of particulates and the mitigation of air pollution The control of runoff and water pollution The promotion of biodiversity They also provide aesthetic and health benefits. Green roofs benefit your home by enhancing energy efficiency. They serve as natural insulators, which lessens the need for heating and cooling systems, lowering energy costs. Studies have shown that buildings with green roofs can save up to 25 per cent on energy costs annually. Green roofs offer significant aesthetic and psychological benefits. They can transform bland, unused roof space into beautiful, green oases that enhance the visual appeal of buildings and urban landscapes. The presence of greenery is well known to have positive effects on mental health, healing, stress reduction and overall well-being. Stormwater management is an essential issue in urban areas, and green roofs offer an effective solution. They absorb and retain rainwater, reducing runoff and the burden on drainage systems. That is particularly beneficial in cities prone to flooding, where heavy rainfall can overwhelm infrastructure. Green roofs can retain up to 75 per cent of rainwater, gradually releasing it through evaporation and plant uptake. This makes them an environmentally friendly option for municipalities and homeowners alike. The vegetation on green roofs plays a significant role in improving air quality. Plants filter pollutants and capture airborne particles, which helps to purify the air. That is especially important in urban environments, where air pollution is a major concern. island effect, where cities experience higher temperatures than surrounding areas due to human activities and infrastructure. Green roofs help lower temperatures and improve overall air quality by cooling the air through evapotranspiration. Green roofs can also promote biodiversity by providing habitats for various plant and animal species. By choosing various native plants, one can create an ecosystem that supports local wildlife. Birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators are particularly attracted to green roofs, which can help boost their populations in urban areas. Creating such habitats benefits the environment and enhances the beauty and enjoyment of the space. Starting a roof garden requires a few key steps, including ensuring the structure beneath the green roof is sound and can support its weight. Installing waterproofing membranes prevents leaks, adds a root barrier to protect the roof and ensures proper drainage to avoid water buildup. Choosing the right plants is also important and will depend

on the depth of the soil media. Prairie species are tough and can withstand the weather on a green roof. Sedums are good choices too, as they thrive in our local climate and require minimal maintenance. In a world facing rising temperatures, increasing urbanization and more frequent extreme weather events, green roofs offer a practical and attractive solution that benefits both people and the environment. 2. ATTACH THE MOULDING

Arrange the reeded moulding pieces across the face of the pine board, leaving approximately a ¹∕8-inch overhang on all sides. If needed, trim the width of one moulding piece to achieve an even fit. For the least noticeable seam, cut between two of the reeds. Apply construction adhesive to the face of the pine board and press the moulding pieces into place, maintaining an even overhang on all sides. Secure each piece with 1-inch finishing nails, driving the nails between the reeds so they are hidden.

5. REINFORCE THE DOWELS

Turn the rack over. Drive one 1-inch wood screw into the back of the board and into each dowel, positioning the screw slightly off-centre from the pilot hole left by the spade bit. This reinforces each dowel for added strength.

6. FINISH THE RACK

Fill any visible nail holes, sand lightly and paint the rack. For the version shown, Benjamin Moore Thicket was used.

3. MARK & DRILL DOWEL HOLES

Find and mark the centre of the board. From the centre mark, measure out in 3½-inch increments to create five evenly spaced marks on each side, for a total of 11 marks. Using a drill fitted with a 1-inch spade bit, drill at each marked location until the tip of the bit just breaks through the back of the board. This creates a guide for securing the dowels later.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. CUT BACKER BOARD & MOULDING Have the lumber yard cut a 3-foot piece from a 2 × 10 pine board. Using a jigsaw, cut the reeded moulding into 10-inch pieces. Cut one piece first and use it as a template for the remaining pieces.

4. INSTALL THE DOWELS

Cut the 1-inch dowel into 11, 10-inch lengths and sand the cut ends smooth. Apply construction adhesive to one end of each dowel and insert it into the drilled holes. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Locate two wall studs and centre the rack over them. Fasten the rack to the studs using two 3½-inch wood screws, driving one near the top and one near the bottom through the pine backer. The screws can be concealed behind the slight overhang of the moulding for a clean, finished appearance. Your finished rack will hold up to five pairs of boots, keeping them organized and allowing them to dry efficiently. OH

Apple Topping Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a nine-inch round cake pan with a circle of parchment paper. Melt four tablespoons of butter and sugar in a saucepan. Pour into the cake pan. Arrange the apple slices in an even layer over the sugar mixture.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice. Using a stand mixer, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then the vanilla. Add dry ingredients in three batches, alternating with the milk and mixing just until combined. Spread the batter gently over the apples. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate. OH
