senior living apartment. It was a challenge for her to have to downsize. Throughout her life she has done it all – shared college residence, a starter home, large family homes, post-family condos, and now this. She feels as though her world is shrinking. I understand why the change could be considered difficult, and yet I find the transition exciting for her. The move forced us to take a careful look at everything she had and evaluate how much it meant to her. Was this vase one she really liked, or something she had been given and felt obligated to keep? Now she is living amongst favourites. It was also an opportunity to redecorate and refresh. A new configuration of furniture, a different colour scheme. A change is as good as a holiday, right? And of course, a smaller space equals less to keep clean. More time to do things she enjoys. I won’t say Mom doesn’t miss her old place, but she has always had the ability to make a house (or an apartment) a home, and she has again. I think that’s what I enjoy so much about OUR HOMES. I’m privileged to be invited into people’s spaces and to see how they have made them their own. And you can too! In this issue, we have two stunning renovations to share, on pages 68 and 100. But it’s not just homes that are inspiring. I’ve long admired Lorna Parcher’s ability to style a space, any space. You can get a taste from our Graham & Brooks Spotlight on page 62. So many of our featured retailers, designers and builders have an incredible knack for creating beauty. It’s a delight to be able to bring their work to you. As we head into the winter season, I hope you find much to celebrate.

2023 is coming to an end. All year, I caught myself saying “wow I cannot believe it’s the middle of the month already.” Now, as we hit December, I catch myself reflecting on how much has changed over the past year, what has happened to bring us to where we are – thrust into the holiday season once again, oh so soon. Author Nathaniel Hawthorne once said “Time flies over us but leaves its shadow behind.” Those shadows include the trends and styles we embraced and incorporated into our homes. I love looking back through our issues and revisiting the homes I have walked through over the past year; the styles and newcomers that have now cemented themselves as staples in interior design. This year, so many designers, tradespeople and builders embraced textures – artistically applied plaster, natural stone finishes, rustic woods and, of course, the fan favourite – fluted wood, found on walls and furniture. Rich, organic colour palettes of green, taupe, gold and navy trickled into our fixtures and covered our so-long white walls. And furniture softened, with rounded edges and arches, leading the way for us to do the same in doorways and window frames. Peek around you as you read. Can you spot a few of these trends that have found their way into your own home? I am sure you can. I am forever grateful for this role with OUR HOMES – thankful to be granted access into your lives and shown the passion, creativity, care and thought that has gone into every single home and project that is so proudly presented to us to fill our pages. As I look forward to another year, I could not be more excited. Cheers to 2024!

Windows connect us to the outside environment and flood our space with natural light. They balance the architectural design and can frame views of nature. Why would we cover them up? Well, window treatments play a role from a functional and aesthetic point of view.
PRIVACY & SECURITY If you live in a city, town or close to a busy roadway, window treatments provide privacy that can increase your feelings of comfort. If you own a vacation property, obstructing the views to the interior provides additional security.
GLARE CONTROL Whether working on a computer or watching television, window coverings temper the light to avoid casting a glare on your screens (specifically during certain times of the day or year).
SOUND ABSORPTION With the prevalence of open-concept homes and vaulted ceilings, drapery made with a dense, tightly woven fabric can aid in absorbing the noise that travels throughout your home.
LIGHT TRANSMISSION Window coverings can help to protect furnishings from fading and sun damage, particularly from the strong south or west sun.
ENERGY CONSERVATION Windows are constantly being manufactured to higher standards of energy efficiency but window coverings can still help (especially from the westerly winter wind or beaming summer sun). Heavy draperies layered with a honeycomb cellular shade can provide additional insulation value.
LIFESTYLE Shift workers and light sleepers benefit from blackout blinds/draperies in the bedroom as darkness indicates to the body that it’s time to rest. Be mindful of your pets – cats like to climb curtains and dogs can soil the edges of your drapery.
Location Consider the material, style and design of the window treatment and the characteristics and use of each room, as well as frequent occupants (greasy fingers from little people may affect your selections).
Style Window coverings can elevate the home from an aesthetic point of view to support the overall design and architecture. There are generally two types of window coverings – hard and soft. Soft window coverings include drapery, curtains and shades, while hard window treatments include blinds, shutters and screens. Drapery is typically more formal than curtains. They are often pleated and hung on rods mounted outside of the window frame at the ceiling or above the top of the window frame. Curtains are mounted inside or outside of the window frame. An example is the café curtain, which has made a comeback in recent years. They are installed halfway up the window (typically within the frame), providing privacy in the lower portion while allowing daylight to stream in from above. Shades control light by filtering or blocking. Roller, Roman, sheer and cellular shades are examples. Depending on the options, they can be translucent, opaque or black-out. Blinds are either horizontal or vertical and made of several materials, including wood, vinyl, metal or fabric. Traditional blinds can tilt to control light and privacy. Vertical solutions include slats and panel tracks.
Shutters are rigid panels in a frame with louvres that tilt. They have hinges that operate like small doors installed within the window frame. Screens can be sliding or folding, such as the Shoji screen.
Operation Depending on the type of window covering, motorization is becoming more popular with smart-home automation, especially for difficultto-reach windows, large windows or windows with sensitive fabrics that you want to avoid touching frequently. Some systems require a hardwire during the rough-in phase (possible for new builds and renovations), while others utilize a rechargeable battery system. Be prepared that motorized window treatments cost significantly more than their non-motorized counterparts.
Cost Window treatments are an investment and should be a line item in your home build or renovation budget from the outset. To help determine costs, schedule an appointment with a local expert. They will evaluate your needs and tailor solutions to fit your requirements, your lifestyle and your specific house. For example, the style/type of window operation, whether you have traditional casing or drywall returns, and if you need black-out versus light filtering will all affect the best mounting solution, which will determine the measurements. It is best to consult a professional!
Care As with anything, regular maintenance will extend the life of your window coverings. The style, material and design of your window treatments will dictate how frequently they need to be cleaned, but generally dust or vacuum during your routine and add a deep clean once or twice a year. OH

They didn’t have to look far for answers. Damian owns Reign Custom Builders, a premier home builder in Mississauga and the surrounding area, and Ky is a designer/decorator with a talent for seeing how a space will look when complete. Along with their experienced tradespeople, and residential design firm David Small Designs, they imbued warmth into every inch of their 4,700-plus sq. ft. contemporary dream house. How did they do it? They looked to the property’s lush landscape of trees, stone and water, and mimicked nature’s elements. The exterior was clad with wood composite panels and chiseled grey-toned stone. Water features and two-way fireplaces were used to connect outdoor seating areas to the interior and extend seasonal usage. Remotecontrolled screens were chosen to keep the bugs at bay when enjoying

the outdoors, and massive windows from Pella Windows & Doors were installed to make the inside feel like one with nature and the surrounding elements. “Although we work in the home-building business,” says Ky, “we built this house for us. It’s everything we wanted for our family.” Ky and Damian’s daughter, Reine, is now away at university but comes home often. The home’s interior was also fashioned as an extension of the outdoors, each area flowing to the next. The living room, dining room, kitchen and bar area meld into one while drawing the eye 14-plus feet upwards to walnut-clad ceilings that carry to the outdoor patio and soffits. A 10-foot bi-fold door separates the kitchen and the outdoor seating area. “We love the wide-open space of an open-concept design,” says Ky, “but cosy gathering spots were a must, and I wanted the kitchen Continued on page 43

to feel like part of the living room.” Ky and Damian love how the dark walnut cabinetry with touch latches hides the appliances, and Eramosa and basalt stone walls define the social areas within the space. King Masonry Yard Ltd. and MK Stone Inc. took care of the stonework throughout. White walls offer an unobtrusive background, allowing the natural elements and beloved artwork to take centre stage. Area rugs and oversize, soft furniture add texture the family and their guests can sink into. “We have so many fireplaces,” says Ky, “you can see at least one no matter where you stand in the house.” Fireplaces were sourced from MHC Home Comfort. “We love how a glowing fire sets the mood,” adds Ky. The family loves to entertain. The kitchen island is the hub of the household. One side seats six, while the other provides prep space and a sink. The mostly white
quartzite top of the kitchen island from Cava Surfaces is 10-feet long and four-inches thick. The same quartzite was used as a backsplash, the subtle grey veining complementing the cabinetry and stone walls. Brass hardware from Roca Design Ltd. adds an elegant yet grounded touch to the streamlined millwork, and there is tons of storage, so the family’s household needs can be tucked out of sight yet easily accessible. “We love the hidden pantry,” says Ky. VK Building Concepts Inc. did the interior woodwork throughout the house, including the interior doors, trim, and wall panelling. Marana made and installed the cabinetry. Countertops and backsplash were provided by Caledonia Stone Marble Inc., and the heating and cooling systems were supplied and installed by Imperial Energy. Lighting was used to draw the eye to the wood grain running through the spectacular white oak floating stairway enclosed by glass and brass bars that match the open shelving of the bar. “I imagined all these features in my mind,” says Ky, “but our talented tradespeople brought them to life.” The stairway was built by Roes Stair Corp. Inc., and KMAX Hardwood Flooring provided the white oak flooring. Light fixtures were purchased from various shops and the electrical work was done by Tam Electric. While the house was finished in 2021, amid the pandemic, there were very few obstacles. “Luckily,” says Ky, “we purchased everything we needed for the build pre-COVID, so supply and pricing were locked in.” And they weren’t short on experience or expertise. Reign Custom Builders has been in the business for almost 20 years. They build several custom homes annually, and their tradespeople are mostly in-house. “Damian has assembled a tight team,” says Ky, “and clients love our hands-on approach to building their perfect home.” Communication and creativity are keys to their success. Ky works from the home office off the entryway of their new abode, Damian has his office in the basement, and they share the boardroom for meetings. They regularly welcome clients into their home to showcase their talents. Continued on page 46

The warmth is more than skin deep. TIP 2: Create An Intimate And Unique Dining Moment Put a fresh spin on well-loved classics by stepping up the presentation. This year I am dazzling guests on arrival with a martini tower finished with stuffed olives. This is a fun way to re-invent the champagne tower! For this event I want to create an engaging moment for guests. That’s why I love a handson dinner like fondue. To keep the display interesting and eye-catching, roll meats and skewer them. Instead of oil in your fondue pot, try using your favourite broth-based soup for added flavour – my favourite is onion soup. Plus, a beautiful display of breads, accoutrements and sides will round out the meal. My favourite part? A “guest experience” also lightens the load of the host to prepare and plate numerous courses and meals – all while creating organic moments of conversation and activity.
I love sending a formal paper invitation to set the tone for the event. A dress code is always an engaging way to liven up the night! This could be black tie, a colour theme, or even “come as you are.” I am asking my guests to dress in classic creams and champagne tones – a stylish colour palette that will have guests ready to strike a pose for a great social moment. Place Instax instant cameras throughout the event so guests can have fun capturing the evening’s special moments. For final touches, include note cards and envelopes so guests can write down their new year’s resolutions and celebrate the start of something new. Visitors to this summer’s annual Pelham Summerfest, a four-day celebration drawing crowds of thousands from near and far, got to see just why Fonthill is such a desirable place to live. Set in the heart of the Niagara region amid orchards and vineyards, the picturesque town is filled with quaint shops, numerous dining and entertainment options and boasts nature trails and outdoor activities. Add to that its close proximity to Welland, St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Niagara Falls, it’s little wonder Rinaldi Homes chose to locate their latest project here. Fonthill Abbey, as it is named, is a community of 16 luxury three-storey terrace townhomes within walking distance of downtown. With families, professionals and empty nesters in mind, Rinaldi designed modern homes that offer high-end living with minimal upkeep. (A modest condo fee covers grass cutting, snow removal, and water for irrigation and household use.) “We see ourselves as innovators,” explains sales and marketing manager Victor Krmpotic. “From an architectural perspective it’s very contemporary architecture. As a company we’re always evolving, looking at new concepts and ideas, bringing new developments to the forefront before other builders.” In this instance, the design features a flat-roof (rather than a pitched roof) favoured for their energy efficiency. They’re also simpler to maintain because of easy accessibility. Roofing materials came from Stark Lumber.
Each townhome comes equipped with elevators and high-end finishes, including an alarm system – with cameras front and back – and video doorbells that can be monitored through the smart home system. Rinaldi takes feedback from their specialists in the field to understand the needs and wants of the market, and works with their architectural team, design team and builders to create their plans. The ground floor, accessed from the front door or the garage, has a bedroom that can be easily set up as a home office. A bathroom is attached, perfect for work-from-home situations. The second floor is a spacious open-plan living room, dining room, kitchen and powder room. The third-floor features two bedrooms with en suites and laundry. The basement level is finished, suitable for a home gym, hobby room or another entertainment area. Continued on page 57

Bold geometric patterns in artwork and accessories add a sense of personality and playfulness to the home that is aesthetically pleasing.” Like all the townhomes, the model home comes standard with deluxe features including hardwood flooring by Aristocrat Floors, large and tall windows by Crowland Sash & Frame Ltd. and Niagara Glass Ltd., quartz countertops from Kirkpatrick Stoneworks and Quartz Co in the kitchen and all the bathrooms, powered window coverings throughout, comprehensive lighting and a 77-inch fireplace from The One Stop Fireplace Shop. Rinaldi Homes has been building in the Niagara area since 1987, when brothers Jerry and Frank formed the company. Tom REBELO prides himself on working through his to-do list of renovations in good time. But there was one home-upgrading project that had languished – his own. The proprietor of Rocar Renovations waited 12 years to check that box and now, with a complete overhaul of his bungalow near Hamilton – where he lives with his two teen sons, Rocco and Carlos – he has. “It’s been driving me nuts,” Tom says with a laugh. “I couldn’t get around to my house because I was focused on my customers.” It was worth the wait. The final product is a gorgeous family home that fuses modern and contemporary design and will meet the trio’s needs for years to come. Continued on page 70

“It’s been a process,” says Tom, whose business name is a portmanteau of Rocco and Carlos. Tom bought the home as a new-build for his young family. The lower level was unfinished, which suited their needs as a playroom for the boys. Today, it’s as much a playroom for Dad, who shows it off proudly after building it from the ground up. With help from his good friend Brett Murphy at Waycon Group, he relocated the basement support jacks to accommodate his vision for the space, including adding a massive bar with cabinetry by CR Technical Woodworking, topped with a dramatic quartz that mimics timeless marble from Stone On The Go. It’s the epicentre of sizable gatherings and offers everything needed for a guest list of more than 50 people. Strategically placed lighting, including underneath the bar, casts a tasteful spotlight on this focal point of the rec room. Thanks to New Growth Electric, Tom was able to get the lighting exactly as he envisioned. “Lighting, to me, is huge,” says Tom, who did all the electrical work. “It changes the look and mood completely.” When deciding on the footprint of the space, Tom left room for a billiard table and large seating area to relax around a big-screen TV and fireplace. “I didn’t want there to be any unmanageable shots at the pool table,” he says. “So, we broke out the floor, placed new footings and new beams, and beefed everything up to ensure the integrity of the structure wasn’t compromised. From there, every inch of space was custom-built.” Giving the room a less subterranean feel, he also added a walkout to the backyard. Continued on page 72

The space where he once played with his boys as small children has also changed to include two large bedrooms for the teens. Offering his sons added independence, Tom added a spacious bathroom he plumbed himself and finished in black tile from Sarana Tile. It also includes thoughtful touches – a glass partition, freestanding tub and mirrors with LED lights – for a true spa experience. A weight room, separated by a glass door from Royal Glass and Storefronts Ltd., offers space for self-care and exercise. The finishing touch of the lower level is a wine cellar for his favourite vintages, including those he makes himself. The stairs up to the main level are bracketed with a clean, contemporary glass railing and an accent wall with Art Deco-like relief detailing that’s repeated in other pockets of the home. “The accent walls are something we’re doing more of every day for customers, and I personally love the look myself,” Tom says. With his boys now downstairs, Tom gutted the main level to create a luxurious and functional space to call his own. What used to be his boys’ three-piece bathroom was converted to a practical yet eye-pleasing laundry room after determining the family didn’t need the extra bathtub. The laundry room’s former cramped footprint was ideal for a twopiece powder room and guest bath, and a narrow hallway that led to the main washroom was done away with to create more open space. Tom converted one of boys’ bedrooms to a walk-in closet and tacked it onto the primary bedroom, a private abode where Tom blew out trusses to create a loft, or rather, “a Zen area with lots of throw cushions” underneath a skylight – to retreat to for quiet reflection. Back on ground level, Tom used the space from his boys’ former bedrooms to expand his en suite to three times its original size. A small, angled shower and builder’s bathtub gave way to a freestanding soaker tub and TV where he can relax. A glass shower gives more room to wash up and a new skylight on the cathedral ceiling adds natural light. Trusses were removed to make the shower feel “like you’re showering in a natural, outdoor spring.” Counters were also supplied by Stone on the Go. Continued on page 76

Heading into the kitchen, tile flooring was replaced with engineered hardwood, from Vartanian Rugs, that runs throughout the rest of the home. “Being of European background, I naturally love tile, but I wanted to extend hardwood throughout because it gives it a cosy feel,” he says. The footprint of the kitchen also underwent dramatic change. The massive kitchen counter, draped in matching quartz from Stone on the Go, was reconfigured to a T-shape to create a four-seat breakfast bar. Space from the former dining room was incorporated to allow for a large, multi-purpose island. Tom also removed the pantry to make way
for a two-sided aquarium that faces both the kitchen and front hall and gives a resort-feel. All in, it took six months to complete the project. It’s still missing one feature that will come, like everything else, when the time is right – a dog to fill the void left by the passing of the family’s beloved Shih-tzu, Diesel. Admittedly, Tom could have moved and spared himself the work. But all that time and effort makes this home truly theirs. “I’ve put the blood, sweat and tears in here,” he says. “Why start over somewhere else?” OH

Les says more people are letting their personal style shine, requesting chandeliers, pendants and fixtures in mixed metal finishes. He says fixtures with white and gold accents complement the colour palette of most transitional homes. A new trend for 2024 is the resurgence of milky and faux alabaster glass for a softer lighting look.
Integrated LED light fixtures continue to dominate the market, with new designs coming forward that are more energy efficient and allow for more colour temperatures. “LED is a simplistic, clean look,” says Les. “A sleek, minimalistic design that cannot be achieved with a bulb fixture.” Looking to make the change in your home? Les says the savings alone make it worth it, with LEDs burning one-tenth the power consumption of a traditional bulb. “We are now more than 10 years into producing LED bulbs, and the improvements are not ending,” Les says. Brian always knew he wanted to grow a business in residential homes, which he did with his company Kenneth Homes Design Build Inc. After 13 successful years, he and Sita drew on that experience to rebrand as Ever After, signifying their focus on bringing clients personalized care, creating the homes of their dreams. “We want to be a custom builder because we enjoy that everything is different and unique to that customer,” Brian says.
Ever After begins with in-person meetings. “Our primary focus as we work through those initial meetings is to determine if it is a good fit from a relationship standpoint, and is it a job we think we’ll bring good value to,” Brian explains. “We bring the most value when we are excited about a project or a design, and excited about working with these people.” With each project they take clients through the entire process: plans, permitting, construction and design. They’ll even shop for furniture!
The Advice Relationship is key when choosing a builder, Brian says. “You are going to be in contact with this person and this company for anywhere from a couple of years to a decade. There are significant challenges that are going to come with a build. Do you and the builder communicate in similar ways?”

It can be hard to pinpoint when a renovation truly begins. Is it when the initial daydreaming takes place? With the first consultations with a designer? Or when the sledgehammer makes contact with the walls?
Original artwork by Niagara artist Floyd Elzinga comes alive against the neutral palette of the chic living room.
For the owners of this St. Catharines home, it all began with the fireplace. “We started with ‘let’s just redo the fireplace,’ ” says the homeowner. “Then we looked at the whole main floor – to improving the kitchen, changing some flooring. After awhile, we figured we might as well do it all in one shot.” The result? A reimagined primary living space that intelligently incorporates modern elements while preserving existing features of the home – all of which made this husband-wife duo fall in love with their home all over again. The couple met with designers who helped them see their two-storey with fresh eyes, re-evaluating the design in ways they could not have imagined. “Years ago, we renovated our en suite without the help of a designer and now we regret a lot of the choices we made,” the homeowner says. “Hiring professionals saves you money in the long run, the project is done properly the first time and ensures you won’t make costly mistakes.” First, a new gas fireplace from The One Stop Fireplace Shop was added to the living room. The contemporary fireplace is an anchor on the main floor, one the couple enjoy while resting on an inviting taupe-coloured Italian leather reclining sofa and loveseat by Natuzzi Italia from Interiors by Better Shade. The sunken living room was filled in and made level with the rest of the main floor and warm plank flooring from Aristocrat Floors was chosen to coordinate with the home’s existing porcelain tiles – bringing this 1996 build into 2023. “The two types of flooring run seamlessly together,” says the homeowner. “You cannot tell which one was newly added.” Building on the contemporary vibe, a neutral colour palette was chosen to warm the main floor, a switch that freshens up the space while giving the homeowners the flexibility to change the look and feel with different accessories and artwork. New custom motorized shades and blinds, also from Interiors by Better Shade, were added throughout the home. Original artwork by Niagara artist Floyd Elzinga sets the tone on the wall adjacent to the fireplace. The landscape, created using steel relief to be one part sculpture and one part picture, catches the eye and sparkles under clean, white light
spilling from new pots dotting the ceiling. The piece was custom-mounted to a black background, making it pop. Tucked behind the sofa is a cocktail area, a clever use of space between the living and dining spaces that otherwise ran the risk of being relegated to a mere throughway between the two. Thanks to the creativity of Melissa Rey, design consultant at Interiors by Better Shade, the in-home cocktail lounge is now a favourite for the homeowners. It features a small table and chairs to enjoy a drink and conversation before dinner in the adjoining dining room – complete with comfortable chairs and a walnut dining table, making meals something to linger over. home & designer A visually striking, low-profile buffet adds function to the dining room while keeping the space minimalist. Like the rest of the furniture and décor, these timeless pieces all come from Interiors by Better Shade. The welcoming feel on the main level was further enhanced by a kitchen facelift. Though they could have gutted it down to the studs, the family chose to preserve the existing layout and key elements while adding new components. “With the designers, we were able to intelligently use existing elements to make the kitchen look like a full redo when it wasn’t,” says the homeowner. Dated fixtures and cupboard doors were removed and replaced with fresh faces by Oakridge Cabinets in a contemporary dark espresso shade. A large island by Oakridge was added for additional seating and capped in a dramatic quartz from First in Counters Granite, which coordinates with the backsplash by Aristocrat Floors. With a nod to practicality, a wine fridge was added to the island, which seats eight. A geometric chandelier casts an inviting glow over it all and complements the wall sconces with bubbly glass. Another nod to the eye of a designer – a wall was originally removed from the kitchen during construction, but was then added back in at a new angle to add visual interest. “The wall was not structurally needed,” says the homeowner. “But we agreed it added depth and interest to the open space.” Continued on page 106

Follow these steps for each bell: Use a hammer and nail to make a hole in the bottom of the pot. Place the yarn through the hole and make a knot. Apply a drop of hot glue to anchor the knot in place on the bottom of the pot.
CREATE THESE FAUX VINTAGE SLEIGH BELLS AND ADD SOME NOSTALGIC CHARM TO YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS.
Next, flip the bowl upside down and, using the glue gun, secure a wooden ring on the centre of the bowl. Once dry, apply Gorilla glue to anchor it in place. Use Gorilla Glue to secure the small bowl to the bottom of the pot and let dry.
Then, paint the bell and embroidery hoop in metallic gold. Once dry, use the sandpaper to lightly distress the edges to allow the black paint to show through. Next, paint the inside of each pot with silver paint. Apply a touch of silver paint around the edges and add intricate details for a weathered appearance.

Using the yarn, tie a knot around the nail and secure it in place with hot glue.

Cut two lengths of jute rope at varying heights. Fasten one bell to the end of the rope and thread the other end through the hoop. Attach the bell to the opposite end and wrap a small amount of rope to conceal the knot. Repeat these steps with the other bells. Stagger the height of the bells. Wrap a small amount of rope approximately four inches below the hoop and use a drop of hot glue to secure it in place. Hang your sleigh bells on your front door, over a mantel or in your foyer to ring in the festive season! OH

Cake 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ cup white granulated sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder 2 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt ¾ cup milk ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Sauce ½ cup white granulated sugar ½ cup packed light brown sugar 3 Tbsp cocoa powder 1-¼ cups boiling water DIRECTIONS There are two layers to this cake.
Cake Layer Preheat oven to 350˚F. In a mediumsize bowl, add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter and vanilla extract until combined. Add to a buttered and floured 9-inch square or round pan.
Sauce Layer In another bowl, combine sugar, brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture over the cake batter in an even layer. Carefully pour the boiling water over the top, being careful not to disturb the layers underneath. Do not mix the layers! Bake for 30-35 minutes. The middle of the cake will still jiggle when removed. Wait 15 minutes before serving, but the cake is best served out of the oven on the day you bake it. OH
