On December 26, 2025, we came together to celebrate a remarkable year of achievement and the incredible young ladies who make the Co-Ette Club so special. Since its founding by Mary-Agnes Miller Davis in 1941, The Co-Ette Club, Incorporated has empowered generations of young ladies through leadership development, community service, philanthropy and sisterhood. Thanks to the unwavering support of our outstanding volunteer advisors, we continue to thrive – 84 years strong! I am delighted to share that through their passion and commitment, the Co-Ettes completed over 2,300 volunteer service hours in 2025 and achieved another outstanding year of fundraising results. These 37 intelligent, determined and resourceful young ladies truly exemplify excellence. Under the guidance of Karen Dobbins Gay, they have planned a beautiful event to honor their accomplishments and to crown our Miss Co-Ette 2026, Asha Engram, and her Court. As you explore this Charity Ball Book, I hope you feel inspired by the stories and achievements of these remarkable young women. I am deeply grateful for our dedicated volunteer advisors – Dr. Christina L. Since 1941, the Co-Ette Club, Inc. has annually celebrated its club year on December 26. In 2024, our elegant dinner and ball took place at Dearborn's The Henry. The ballroom was beautifully decorated to reflect the ball theme, "The Enchanted Forest”. The Club CEO, Mrs. Carla Burney Jones, and Ball Director, Mrs. Karen Dobbins Gay, introduced each elegantly-gowned member to the guests. Celebrating another successful fundraising campaign, the Queen's Court was honored and Miss Co-Ette 2025, Lauren Mallett, was crowned. She then, performed her first official duty, presenting the Detroit Public Library Foundation representative and former Co-Ette Club CEO , Dr. Crystal L.. Powell, with the club's donation of $3,000. Co-Ettes are required to serve as community volunteers throughout the year. Those who exceed 50 hours of volunteerism are annually presented with the Spirit of Detroit Award of the Detroit City Council, by Ms. Ada Nicole Smith, the Club's Volunteer Coordinator. The members presented our CEO, Mrs. Carla Burney Jones, with a token of gratitude for her leadership. All adult advisors were introduced and thanked for their work all year and for their assistance with the Charity Ball. Mrs. Karen Dobbins Gay was also honored for her 50 years of service to the Club. Then, over 50 Co-Ettes and Alumnae joined in singing the moving Club Hymn by candlelight. Finally, Miss Co-Ette enjoyed the first dance with her escort and the Co-Ettes and their guests "danced the night away".

The Metropolitan Detroit Giant Step Teen Conference (FOUNDED BY THE CO-ETTE CLUB FOUNDER, MARY AGNES MILLER DAVIS) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2025 WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER
The Giant Step Teen Conference of Wayne State University and the Skillman Foundation was founded in 1983 by the Co-Ette Club’s founder, Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis. The Co-Ettes are major participants and financial donors to this enjoyable and informative event held in the Wayne State University Student Center Ballroom annually in late October. Over 200 9th and 10th graders of varied socio-economic, religious and ethnic backgrounds from public, private, parochial and charter schools gather to share ideas, discovering that their interests and concerns are more alike than different. The discussions are led by trained table facilitators. The facilitators are adult professionals. Five Co-Ettes are chosen every year to also serve as trained discussion leaders. The Co-Ettes in the 10th grade participate in the table discussions.

The agenda includes games, exercise breaks, a variety of snacks for the participants to enjoy during the table discussions and a delicious lunch, served by the Co-Ettes. Attendees enjoyed pizza, salty snacks, juice and cookies free of charge. Each student took home several donated gifts from the "swag" table. During the workshop, the students' counselors and teachers attended a separate informative workshop. Following the discussions, the adults returned to the ballroom to hear the student table representatives "report out" on their table discussions and conclusions. This year, the Co-Ette Club donated $4,000 to celebrate 40 years of student attendance at the Giant Step Conference. Many of the teens become fast friends with others that they might have never met, were it not for this important event. They stay in contact, even after the conference!

Fall Workshop SEPTEMBER 14, 2025
The Co-Ette Club's Annual Fall Workshop is the most important mandatory meeting of the year. This year's theme was "Co-Ettes Spice and Everything Nice”. The officers and leaders of the Junior Board of Directors decorated the Black Box room at the Hawk of Farmington Hills with colorful fall decorations and balloons. The agenda items informed the members of everything they need to know to have a successful upcoming year. The Club's manual, including the calendar of events, forms and informational items was reviewed in detail. Mixers, games, a fashion show and a delicious meal helped to create excitement and enthusiasm for the upcoming year!

The Annual Chocolate Hour JANUARY 26, 2025
The Annual Chocolate Hour is a favorite event for the Co-Ettes. This is our opportunity to honor our mothers and other significant female mentors-our “She-roes”. We also traditionally honor our newly crowned Queen and her Court for exceptional fundraising with lovely red rose bouquets. This event is very emotional as each member introduces her mother to the group and talks about the importance of their mother-daughter relationship. Then, she presents her mother with a hand-made gift. This year’s keynote speaker was very special. Co-Ette member Lauren Tandy’s grandmother, mother and aunt, Co-Ette alumnae, spoke about their experiences as Co-Ettes and of the profound effect that their training as CoEttes enriched their lives. Their remarks were interesting and heartwarming. Following the formal program, we enjoyed entertainment by talent members and a delicious meal with our traditional chocolate fountain and delectable chocolate desserts.

High Tea
APRIL 27, 2025
A favorite event on the Co-Ette Calendar is the Annual High Tea. The young ladies dress up in colorful spring dresses, stylish hats and white gloves for an elegant afternoon. This year's event was held at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. The new prospective members were introduced to their personal "big sisters" who would help them in their journey to full membership in the club. The program included a lesson on the history of the High Tea and High Tea Etiquette. We then dined on dainty tea sandwiches, scones, tea cakes and sipped a variety of hot teas. This was a fun, informative and elegant afternoon enjoyed by all!

Annual Detroit Opera Performance & Pre-Opera Party DETROIT OPERA HOUSE DETROIT, MICHIGAN MAY 10, 2025
The Co-Ette Club has supported the Detroit Opera for many years. Annually, the members, prospective members, and adult leadership attend an opera performance. This year, we attended a very creative, modern and informative opera, “The Central Park Five” by Anthony Davis who also composed the opera “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” which the Co-Ette Club also attended. The Co-Ette Club made a sizable donation this year which enabled the composer and director to give a very informative talk on the true story of the Central Park Five, African American and Latino youths who were unjustly accused and convicted of assaulting a female jogger in Central Park. They then spoke of musical themes and dramatic techniques that the audience would see in the opera, giving us a deeper appreciation of the performance. Prior to the performance, we enjoyed a Pre-Opera Party in the Black Box of the Detroit Opera House. A member of the opera company performed a beautiful vocal selection and gave us an orientation on opera appreciation and opera etiquette. She also spoke about her experiences in the opera company. For many of the members, attendance at the opera with the Co-Ette Club is their first exposure to the opera. Often, they become lifelong attendees of operatic performances.

Annual Graduation/Installation Celebration & Ceremony at The Hawk--Black Box Theater MAY 17, 2025
This is our last event of the Club year. We honor our graduating Seniors and install new members and officers for the upcoming year. This year, our president, Haleigh Cameron, passed the gavel to incoming president, Lauren Mallett Our keynote speaker was CoEtte alumna, Payton Harvey, a recent University of Michigan graduate and national collegiate cheerleading champion representing the University of Michigan. She gave insight into how her Co-Ette experiences contributed to her college success. Following her talk, new members were installed by candlelight and individual tributes were made to each graduating senior. A delicious luncheon was enjoyed by the members and parents of graduates. This was truly a bittersweet occasion.

Co-Ettes Through & Through Shelby Stoudamire 2025 Chapter Journalist The Co-Ette Club, founded in 1941 by Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis, is an organization dedicated to leadership, service to others, philanthropy, and sisterhood. For 84 years, this club has helped young ladies of Metro Detroit become successful individuals by instilling these pillars within them. Members are exposed to unique cultural experiences and learn skills that can help them to develop into future leaders while also fostering a sense of community with their fellow Co-Ette sisters and advisors. Open Meeting While the Co-Ette Club offers fun experiences, there is a rich history that members are expected to uphold and expectations to be fulfilled. Open Meeting is an event that gives girls an opportunity to learn about the Co-Ette Club and meet current members, advisors, and other interested young ladies. The event gives those interested in joining the club a glimpse into what being a Co-Ette looks like while also enjoying ice cream and other desserts. Volunteerism One of the key cornerstones of the Co-Ette Club is volunteerism. In addition to benefiting the community, service to others helps to build empathy and character. Co-Ettes are required to complete a minimum of 24 community service hours with organizations in Metro Detroit to maintain a membership in good standing. Many members go above and beyond, completing much more than the minimum. Those who complete 50 or more hours of community service are awarded the Spirit of Detroit Award by members of the Detroit City Council. Giant Step Teen Conference In 1983, Co-Ette Club founder Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis created the Giant Step Teen Conference with a goal of bringing youth from across Metro Detroit together. During the conference, 9th and 10th graders from different racial, religious, cultural, and economic backgrounds, along with a table facilitator, spend time getting to know one another. Through meaningful discussions, students realize that they have more in common with other teens than previously thought. Co-Ettes serve as hostesses and facilitators, helping the conference to run smoothly. Each year, the club president presents a donation in support of the event. Because 2025 was the 40th year of students meeting in person, the Co-Ette Club donated $4,000. Cultural Experiences: The Detroit Opera The Detroit Pre-Opera Party and performance is one of the most beloved annual events of the Co-Ette Club. Co-Ettes, advisors, and prospective members all attend, first enjoying a Pre-Opera Party in the Black Box Room of the Detroit Opera House. During the party, the club listens to a private performance courtesy of a member of the opera company, who also speaks on the production of the evening. After the party, Co-Ettes become immersed in an entertaining opera experience. This year’s opera was “The Central Park Five”, which artistically retells the true story of injustice faced by five teenagers of color. Prior to the evening’s performance, the Co-Ettes, through a major donation, sponsored a talk by the composer and director of the opera for all operagoers. Historical insight and musical analysis were covered in the informative presentation. The Chocolate Hour Chocolate Hour is an event where members honor the important women in their lives who have always supported them. Through this “doubly sweet” event, Co-Ettes show appreciation for their mothers with gifts while also enjoying chocolate treats and a nice meal. The Queen and her Court are also honored, receiving lovely red roses. Charity Ball Charity Ball is the biggest event of the Co-Ette Club and is held at the end of the year. Traditionally taking place the day after Christmas, the Charity Ball is the event where guests meet and honor the Co-Ettes for their outstanding fundraising efforts. It is also when ‘Miss Co-Ette’ — the member that raises the greatest amount for charity — is crowned. The efforts of these young ladies will not go unnoticed! The funds raised by the club are donated to several non-profit organizations and charities like the Gleaners Food Bank and the United Negro College Fund.Following the ceremony, guests dance the night away to music provided by a deejay.
