The President Isn’t the Only One Who Takes an Oath of Office

ike many people, I have been troubled by the state of politics in our country. Disagreements over policy or governing philosophy have been replaced, in part, by raw anger and even hatred. By the time you read this article, the presidential election will likely be over and we will either be preparing for a new president or four more years of the current administration. Regardless of who is elected president, he will recite the same oath that every commissioned officer in the United States military does. It is the same oath that I recited in 1993 when I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and it will be the same oath that future presidents, generals, and ensigns will give. What I find most remarkable about this oath is the fact that our presidents and military officers swear loyalty to a document. They promise to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The commitment of our officers and presidents isn’t to the president, a monarch, a party, or even the people of the United States. They swear allegiance to a piece of paper; to the very idea of America. I am optimistic that years from now, we will be able to collectively look back at this time in our history with a shrug and a sigh knowing that we, as Americans, are more alike than different. And, that the diversity in our society is part of what makes our country great. In the meantime, it is heartening to know that the quarter of a million commissioned officers in our military will continue to serve the constitution and not one man, regardless of his party.

“Be Excellent” Liberty Learning Center Provides One-on-One Tutoring to Weston Students BY TERRY JAILLET

iberty Learning Center opened its doors this summer with one objective: to help students succeed in the classroom by helping them develop outstanding work habits to maximize their God-given talents. This mission transcends everything they do. The tutoring center offers students individualized attention through one-on-one instruction. Finding the study method that is best suited for each individual student is what makes them successful. Liberty offers a broad number of different courses for families to choose from. They offer everything from basic language arts through college-level calculus instruction. They also provide test-prepartion services for most standardized tests, including high school entrance exams, the SAT or ACT and AP exams. We sat down with the Center Director to learn more. Tell us about Liberty Learning Center. Liberty Learning Center is a one-on-one tutoring center that focuses on all subjects and standardized testing for all grade levels from kindergarten thru college.

What standardized tests to you focus on? We have experts to help our students in all subjects and grade levels. Simple Estate Planning Steps BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE re there any estate planning steps I can take now to make things easier for my family should something happen to me? Absolutely. One of the simplest and most important things that you can do yourself is to verify that your assets and beneficiaries are properly titled. Let’s consider the following all too common scenarios: Sadly after a long illness, Mama Maggie loses her daughter, Melissa, a 45- year old divorced woman, with no children. Maggie later learns of the existence of a life insurance policy on Melissa’s life, issued years ago by a former employer. When she contacts the insurance company she is told the policy shows no named beneficiary, so therefore funds cannot be released without a judge’s order from the probate court. Have you collected life insurance policies and 401(k)s over the years? Make sure they all have beneficiaries designated. Nadine Rogers’ husband passes away. All of the couple’s savings and checking accounts were owned jointly. While sorting through papers, Nadine finds a statement from an old savings account in only her husband’s name. She is surprised when notified by the bank that even as a surviving spouse Nadine has no access to the money because she is not named as an owner. As with Mama Maggie, money will only be released with a judge’s order from the probate court. Her options are to hire an attorney to start a probate proceeding, or allow the money to eventually be claimed by the state. All cash accounts should either have an additional owner, or be designated P.O.D. (payable on death) to a named beneficiary. As a married couple, Lucy and Joe own their home jointly so that when one passes his or her share is automatically distributed to the remaining spouse. Tragically, Lucy and Joe are killed in a car accident while on vacation. Without an order from the probate court, their surviving adult children cannot sell their parents’ property. A probate administration must be opened and no sale can be finalized until they receive permission from the court. This can be avoided by creating a specialized deed. This is not a do it yourself project. An estate planning attorney can discuss and advise as to the best approach for your situation so your property passes to your heirs at your death, without the need for probate administration. Finally, in these days of uncertainty it is also important that every adult execute Advance Directives, which includes a HIPAA Release, a Living Will and a Healthcare Power of Attorney. A HIPAA Release allows your medical information be shared with people you designate, a Living Will informs others of your final instructions should you reach the end of meaningful life but are being kept alive by mechanical means , and a Healthcare Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone to decide your medical care should you lose the ability to decide for yourself. Weston Music Society Goes Virtual:

Cypress Bay Alum, Jose Veliz Performs on Facebook Live

he Weston Music Society (WMS) hosted its first virtual music event by welcoming former WMS scholarship winner, Jose Veliz, to perform on Facebook Live. The event, which took place during September, was a categorical success. Jose performed American Songbook pieces such as Moon River, Our Love is Here to Stay, As Time Goes By, while also sharing his original compositions during the event. Hosting the event on an interactive platform like Facebook allowed Jose to engage with his audience in a different way than being on stage. He made his program interactive, engaging with the audience, and offering them the opportunity to be part of the performance. “It was amazing to witness the overwhelming response of the viewers to the interactive program,” said WMS Vice President of Membership, Gina Catone, “People were sending in their choices via FB and there was a large response to this portion of the concert.” Jose is no stranger to The Weston Music Society. He performed at the WMS’s Summerfest Concert in 2015 and at its Membership Social in 2019. The WMS believes firmly in supporting local talent. Jose’s

development and talent as an artist show why. He was awarded the Weston Music Society Scholarship in 2015 when he graduated from Cypress Bay High School. Jose attended the University of Miami, Frost School of Music, and graduated in 2019. He is both a gifted pianist and an accomplished composer. While at the Frost School of Music Jose had a solo performance featuring an interactive concert at the university. Jose had engaged the audience by permitting them to make selections while he was performing. The Facebook Live program came out of the Weston Music Society’s desire to maintain its connection with its members and the community at large. The WMS missed seeing its members and guests at its concerts and wanted to connect with our audience again. “Our audience appreciated being a part of the show,” commented Catone, “It reinforced our decision as a group to offer this event to the public.” We can’t wait for more interactive shows in the future!

rior to the pandemic, 13-year old Yael Schwartzman was a pretty typical kid. She enjoyed being on the cheer squad, dancing, singing, and spending time with her friends. She also loved the special time she would spend with her mother Andrea. Each Friday afternoon, they baked home-made challahs for their family. Yael’s

family and friends often remarked how tasty her challah was. Challah is a special bread in Jewish cuisine. It is usually braided and typically eaten on Jewish holidays and on the Shabbat, Judaism’s day of rest on the seventh day of the week—i.e., Saturday. Unfortunately for Yael, the COVID-19 lockdown kept her from cheerleading and took her away from her friends. With less to do outside the home, she decided to bake more often and began offering her challahs to neighbors on the Nextdoor app. Word on Yael’s challah spread like wildfire. In fact, she is baking every single day now and sometimes enlists her brother and parents to help when orders get backed up. Every batch takes her about two hours from start to finish. “I use the recipe my mom passed on to me,” commented Yael, “The dough is pretty basic, but I’m always trying to find new flavors to add to it.” Yael isn’t just running her newfound baking business, she is also giving back, “I donate a percentage of my sales to St. Jude Hospital.” If you are hankering for some yummy bread, be sure to reach out to the area’s newest baking superstar.

I see patients of all ages, including pediatric patients, adolescents, as well as adults and seniors. What other services does your practice offer, besides paint management? My partners and I provide a multidisciplinary approach to treat a broad spectrum of potential ailments. These include everything from sports-related foot and leg injuries in children all the way to arthritis or hip injuries with our senior patients. hen Dr. Robert Donoway and Kathryn Donoway were planning their wedding, they knew it would be different than most. Getting married during the pandemic presented some challenges, but what set their marriage apart was the present they gave to each other and the community at large: The Donoway Center Foundation for Pancreatic, Liver, and Advanced Cancer Research. The foundation is an outgrowth of their desire to give back and, at the same time, to advance medical science. “When we see how others suffer during their cancer treatment we knew there were things we could

do to improve on it,” commented Dr. Donoway, “for years, I provided cancer surgery to many who couldn’t pay or could only a small portion. When Kathryn suggested that we ask our wedding guests to contribute to the Foundation, rather than the usual gifts, it just seemed quite natural.” Dr. Donoway has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer for over 30 years. He treats around 3,000 patients a year from around the world, not just South Florida. In a typical year, Dr. Donoway operates on 500-750 new cancer patients with an emphasis on cancers of the pancreas, liver, and breast, and treating melanoma and sarcoma.

Growing Pains in Children or Merely Flat Feet? BY CARLO A. MESSINA

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knockkneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding

barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated.

From Director to Mom BY MOLLY BROUSSEAU

started working with kids at a young age and I thought I knew everything being a mom. Boy was I wrong! Being a first time mom is tough. There are hundreds of articles and Instagram accounts which all claim to have the secret to parenting, but the truth is there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to a newborn. Also, there is NO such thing as bad advice, so, take what you need and leave the rest. As a mom and an educator, I can only speak from experience when sharing with you what I’ve learned in these first 9 months of motherhood. Pinterest is a mom’s best friend (thank you to all the moms who have the time and the talent to post what I can only hope to recreate). There you can find anything from kid recipes, to photo ops, to life saving baby hacks! Don’t compare yourself to anyone! Every child is different, and every parent has an opinion. I have seen this both as a preschool director and a mother, your child will feed off your energy. If you are stressed the baby will feel it, so take the time to

breath and relax. “Sleep when the baby sleeps”, people make it sound so easy. They do not mention all the other things that need to be done like the laundry, dinner, or cleaning hundreds of baby bottles! So instead, sleep when your body needs it. Try to prioritize what needs to be done, making sure that whatever that is, is good for you, not the person you are trying to empress. Trust me it does get better, you will find your groove! Allow your child to build their independence at a young age. This means giving them time for safe and supervised independent play. Also, as moms it is often easier and faster to do things for our children, but what are they learning? Babies are learning new things at a rapid rate and allowing them to explore on their own not only boosts creativity but also begins to build their confidence. This will help them feel secure and allow mom to get simple chores done around the house at the same time! The best piece of advice I received was to “enjoy every moment because they grow up fast”. This is something I heard 100 times while pregnant but never truly understood until now. Being present for our children is increasingly more important as we live busy, on the go, lifestyles and this starts from day one. Put down the phone and take everything in, the

good and the bad. Cherish the 3 AM feedings, pretty soon you will be looking down to find your little boy won’t fit in your lap anymore. Most importantly, have fun! Being a mother is the most rewarding, scary, and exhilarating experience but I can promise you, if you are enjoying it, your baby is doing just fine! Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. According to the Broward Supervisor of Elections, more than 300,000 Broward votes were cast by the end of the first day of early voting. The increase in vote-by-mail activity is expected to offset delays caused by COVID-19 safety precautions. Sometimes It’s Just Up to the Parents BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. n the past few days, I have been contacted by several former clients, who have asked me the same question. These clients have been previously divorced and have school age children. In all instances they have “SHARED PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY”. The question that has been asked is can you help me? The help they need concerns the re-opening of schools. One of the parents wants the child(ren) to go back to school for “face to face learning” and the other parent wants the child(ren) to continue with “distance learning”. I am sure this is an issue that many parents are dealing with right now. No matter where you may stand on this issue, I think every parent has weighed the pros and cons of sending a child back into their school. If the parents are still together in an intact marriage or even if not married but living together and raising their children, I think we can all admit that it is a joint parental decision. However, if the parents are divorced, and have “Shared Parental Responsibility” will the courts become involved? Let me first define “Shared Parental Responsibility” Florida Statutes define “Shared Parental Responsibility”, as follows: ‘A Court-ordered relationship in which both parents retain full parental rights and responsibilities with respect to their child and in which both parents CONFER with each other so that major decisions affecting the welfare of the child will be determined JOINTLY”.

So, based upon the above, the parents are to confer, and make a joint decision. Sounds exactly what parents, who are still together, must do when making major decisions about their children. That is exactly the goal of Shared Parental Responsibility. You may be divorced but you are still the parents of your children and need to put aside your differences and co-parent. Unless one of the parents have been given “ultimate decision making “ for educational decisions, (rare) neither parent has the ability to “override” the other. What I have advised these former clients, who are now raising their children as divorced parents, is that they must work it out between themselves. They must decide what is in their children’s best interests. It is not up to a Judge to decide this issue. It is not a clear-cut issue, with a right or a wrong. In my opinion it would not be proper for a judge to make such a decision based upon his or her individual belief about the benefits or the danger in having a child attend school. he holiday season is upon us and sadly this is also peak season for thieves. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District is offering some simple safety tips to keep in mind to keep you and your possessions safe while you are shopping or traveling. Crime Prevention Specialist Deputy Danielle Quinones says when out shopping be aware of your surroundings. She recommends parking in well-lit areas at night. “Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash and multiple credit cards; only carry what is necessary.” Just as you don’t want to become a crime victim, you don’t want your car to either. “Always keep your vehicle locked and do not store shopping bags inside,” cautions Deputy Quinones. “Thieves are watching mall parking lots and shopping plazas for shoppers that place their purchased merchandise inside their vehicles before heading to their next location. If possible, bring your shopping bags with you or drop them off at home, before heading out again.” If your holiday shopping involves a purchase from Craigslist, eBay, Letgo, or another online classified ad website, consider completing your transaction

If burglars are staking out houses, they’ll notice these little things. ▸ Put a hold on your mail and newspapers or have a trusted friend, neighbor or family member stop by to collect these items. However, things are different if you are unconscious or otherwise unable to communicate your wishes. In this case, it would be assumed that you would want life-saving action to be taken if you were in danger. That is, unless you have a Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNR). A DNR will prevent medical staff from performing CPR on you in this type of situation. Typically, a DNR order will put into writing that you do not want to undergo any procedure that has the intention to restore blood circulation and heartbeat in the event of a cardiac arrest. This would include procedures such as CPR, intubation (connecting you to a machine that fills your lungs for you), or electric shocks to restart your heart. To establish a legally binding DNR, you can request it inside a hospital. It can also be established by a doctor if you have a Living Will or Advance Health Care Directive that clearly states your wishes regarding resuscitation. DNR orders are sometimes confused with Advance Health Care Directives. Both are documents that allow you the chance to express your wishes regarding medical procedures that you would like to accept or reject in advance in case you become incapacitated later. A DNR order can be a part of an Advance Health Care Directive. However, one can also exist when there is not an Advance Health Care Directive in place. Weston Foreign Film Series Reinvents Itself to Help Weston Restaurants BY JOHN DUKA

or more than two decades, the Arts Council of Greater Weston has organized a series of foreign films every year for the community at economical prices. Hundreds of residents would attend every showing, with many making a night out of it and having dinner before or after the film at a local restaurant. Fast forward to 2020: what do you do when Covid throws a wrench in the works and you can’t do business as usual? For Arts Council Vice President Carol Lema, it was all about finding a creative way to still promote foreign films, but give local restaurants a boost during a challenging year. “We all knew that the restaurants have been under pressure from

mid-March on. We also knew that our patrons would be missing that experience of seeing a film and having the chance to talk about it over a meal this season. I suggested we turn the situation into an opportunity, and the “Dinner and a Movie” promotion and contest was born.” The promotion focuses on increasing business for restaurants during the “mid-week” period of Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, when restaurant business is normally a little slower. Area residents and visitors receive a free non-alcoholic drink or dessert when they order an entrée after 4 p.m., dine or take out, and mention the “Dinner and a Movie” promotion. They can also snap a selfie that clearly

identifies the restaurant and post to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #acgwdinnermovie for the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to a participating restaurant, courtesy of the Arts Council. Two gift certificates will be awarded. There is no cost for restaurants to participate, and restaurants have the option of requesting a minimum purchase. Each week, the Arts Council has and will continue to post the title of a different recommended foreign film which can be watched at home via Amazon, Netflix, streaming services such as Kanopy or Hoopla, and in some cases, can be found in DVD format at the Weston branch library. The one thing missing? aPreshow announcements by Arts Council past president and veteran presenter Joy Rodenberg, who is “the face of Weston foreign films” for many film goers. “Bienvenue! Vilkommen! Benvenuto! Welcome to the Arts Council virtual Foreign Film Series,” Joy noted for this year’s at-home audience. “We hope this promotion provides a fun break for everyone. Until we can greet you in person, stay safe.” Dinner and a Movie is a labor of love for the Arts Council, which normally takes in most of its income for the year from foreign film ticket sales. “We made a decision as a board to go ahead with this volunteer effort because it supports the community,” states ACGW President Laura Dobrzanski. She adds, “We are excited to present something new during these more challenging times while still finding a way to showcase the many years of success we’ve had with our Foreign Film series. We hope the selection of curated movies combined with the versatility of food from our local restaurants brings some smiles to our audience’s faces.”

How To Make Chipping/Pitching Easy DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

hat I’m about to share with you could make golf so much easier and less stressful for you. Especially if you struggle with chipping and pitching. Contact! If you contact the ball thin or fat then you get bad shots. And bad short game shots lead to higher scores. Now using the old way of hitting chips and pitches with a lot of weight on the left side and using a sharp descending blow is very, very hard to time perfectly. Because if you play chips and pitches like that your contact has to be perfect (just ask Tiger). So to try to solve that problem instructors started teaching a new way to play chips and pitch shots, which requires the following… ▸ New “High Margin For Error” Pitching And Chipping Setup ▸ Have the ball positioned in the middle to forward in your stance. ▸ Have your weight evenly distributed at setup. ▸ Have your feet quite close together. ▸ Square stance (or even closed) NOT open. ▸ Have the shaft positioned so it’s vertical NOT leaning forward. ▸ Here is a picture of Luke Donald showing a setup like this… Compare this to the OLD way of chipping/pitching ▸ Ball positioned back in your stance. ▸ Most of your weight on your left side. ▸ Feet open. ▸ Shaft leaning forward. There’s a lot of talk about using the bounce on wedges to make chips and pitch shots easier. But even with that high margin of error setup above, if you use the bounce on a wedge wrong you will get the club bouncing off the ground and smacking into the back of the ball, creating big skulls over the green – which naturally is horrible. So how should you swing to use the bounce on your wedge? Well, I think you should forget about the term “use the bounce” altogether, because the word “bounce” conjures up images of your club bouncing off the ground, and you most certainly don’t want that on your short game shots UNLESS your contact is perfect. Cypress Bay DECA Is Back In Business and Bigger and Better Than Ever BY JOHN DUKA

he COVID-19 Pandemic has changed just about everything this year. Kids are staying home from school and businesses have been forced to create new business models just to stay alive. Cypress Bay High Schools’ chapter of DECA, however, has flourished. With approximately 900 members, Cypress Bay has the largest DECA chapter in the world. DECA is organized into two unique student divisions each with programs designed to address the learning styles, interests, and focus of its members. The High School Division includes 220,000 members in 3,700 schools. The Collegiate Division includes over 5,000 members in 215 colleges and universities. The organization prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Cypress Bay’s DECA chapter focuses on creating emerging leaders. Cypress Bay’s chapter activities that help engage members in leadership, team-building, and professionalism have had to take place virtually, but the chapter’s leaders have found new ways to reach members and adapt to this online world. “In August, at the start of the remote learning school year, Cypress DECA advisors gave me and the rest of the Executive Council members a virtual

leadership training,” commented Executive Council member, Isabella Eaton, “that guided us through new communication platforms like Slack and Trello, but focused on our chapter goal this year, ‘Rethinking Innovation.’” The Cypress Bay DECA chapter has been incredibly successful over the years, with more than 300 state winners at the Florida DECA competition. The program offers members and chapter officers the oppor-

tunity to learn about their own personal strengths and weaknesses in a structured environment. Their COVID-19 related training has empowered them to continue to develop their leadership skills. DECA Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization with more than 225,000 members in all 50 United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and Germany. Senior Pets Have Special Needs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

ust as in people, it’s difficult to predict how quickly individual pets will age. Most veterinarians consider pets to be entering their senior years by the age of 7. However, it’s important to keep in mind that larger dogs tend to age more quickly than smaller dogs. Therefore, many giant-breed dogs may show signs of entering their golden years by age 5 or 6, while smaller dogs and many cats may not show signs of aging until they are 7 or 8 or even older. No matter when your pet actually becomes “senior,” there are a number of things you can do to keep her healthier and more comfortable. What’s Up, Doc? One of the most important things you can do as your pet ages is make sure that she visits your veterinarian regularly. Many veterinarians today recommend twice-yearly visits for senior pets. These checkups include some routine laboratory work to look for problems seen more commonly in older pets. Many potentially serious “old age” diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and arthritis, can be well managed through proper veterinary care. Apart from checkups, your veterinarian may want to devise a senior wellness plan for your older pet. For example, it’s important to make sure she is on an appropriate senior diet. Since obesity is a major problem among older pets, she may need to be on a diet that is calorie restricted. On the other hand, some senior pets, especially those that are well advanced in years, have a hard time keeping weight on. These pets will need to be maintained on a diet that is higher in calories. Your veterinarian can make specific recommendations for your pet to fit your goals and budget. Older pets are also prone to dental disease, so regular dental checkups are a must. Your veterinarian may also recommend treats and chew toys that can help remove the plaque and tartar that may build up on your pet’s teeth. teeth at home using a special pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Some words of caution: Never use human toothpaste on your pet. Human products may contain substances that are harmful to pets. Some Common Problems in Older Pets ▸ Cancer, Diabetes, Kidney failure, Arthritis, Cognitive dysfunction, Dental disease Staying Active As they age, dogs and cats tend to lead more sedentary lives. Just like in people, however, that’s not always healthy. Senior dogs will benefit from regular, gentle exercise in the form of leash walks and easy fetch games. Supervised swimming can be ideal exercise for an older, arthritic dog. Older cats can be harder to exercise, but playtime is also a great way to keep them more active. Throwing small felt mice, balls, and other toys can help keep your cat active. It’s important that you don’t expect too much from your senior pet when it comes to exercise. Although she may want to run and play like she did when she was a pup, you should take it easy with her. Weather extremes, arthritis, age-related muscle

atrophy, and other age-related effects can wear her down more easily in her golden years. Comfort Is Key As your pet ages, make sure she always has access to plenty of fresh, clean water, good-quality food, and a warm, soft, dry place to sleep. Don’t allow her to be exposed to extremes of any kind, including excessive heat or cold, dampness, or too much exercise. It’s also a good idea to minimize distractions for your older pet. As pets age, they can be easily startled by or become fearful of children, loud noises, and general commotion. And just as with older people, overdoing it can have serious consequences.
