March Celebrates Women's Accomplishments
M
arch is Women’s History Month. It was first recognized in the United States in 1988. In a Presidential proclamation, President Ronald Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States.
For the second year in a row, we are celebrating this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make our community such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. People like General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Vice President Kamala Harris, Abigail Johnson of Fidelity Investments, Nobel Laureate in Physics Andrea Ghez, and Miami Marlins General Manager Kim Ng are leading in all parts of our society. Do I Need a Trust? By Bruce Iden, Esquire
S
hould I create a trust even though I don’t have a multi-million dollar estate? My answer: It depends. Often estate planning goals can be achieved without establishing a revocable living trust, but there are instances when one is recommended. It all depends on your family situation and what you want to accomplish. I often use stories such as the following to help new clients better understand the benefits of having a trust. George and Jenny have been happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children, in equal shares. Sounds like a logical plan. Or is it? Tragically, George dies suddenly, and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial attorneys heading to the annual Ft. Lauderdale “I’ll See You in Court Convention.” Several attorneys are injured and predictably, lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It likely all goes to creditors. What’s left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine that Jenny dies first and George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s children. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement and grandchildren, but not fond of Jessica’s husband, Jason. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and be dependent on their daughter Jessica to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to Jessica and she ultimately divorces Jason, a substantial portion of Jessica’s inheritance could be lost to her “no good husband.” If George and Jenny leave inheritances to their children in a trust, these assets will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, daughter Jessica’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and partial distribution to son-in-law Jason. THE WESTON POPS CONCERT RETURNS
T
he City of Weston and the Weston Music Society are pleased to announce the return of the free Weston Pops Concert. It will be held Saturday evening, 6:30 pm, in Weston Town Center behind the Bell Tower, on Saturday, April 2, 2022. A limited number of chairs will be set up, so feel free to bring your own. This will be a treat for the whole family to enjoy wonderful music in a relaxed setting. This year, the South Florida Symphony will present the concert under the direction of Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso. Alfonso has been a guest conductor with such esteemed orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Jose Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Prague Radio Symphony, the Orchestra de Rus in Sienna, Italy, and the Women’s Philharmonic, among many others. She even conducted an underwater concert for over 400 divers which received worldwide recognition. Gina Catone, President of the Weston Music Society, says “I am beyond excited to welcome the South Florida Symphony to Weston. I had the pleasure of attending one of their events and was impressed with the talented and passionate musicians I witnessed on stage. It is my hope
that Sebrina, one of the few female conductors in the country, will be an inspiration to our young people.” A Pops Concert is a special, hybrid event. It features crowd-pleasers including pop standards, Latin favorites, and familiar classics. This program will include vocalists as well as orchestral presentations. Stephanie Bescherelle, a member of the Weston Music Society Board who coordinated the student musical performances for Celebrate the Arts, noted, “As we keep showcasing the many young talents we have here in our local musical programs, it is wonderful to also offer them free access to high quality, professional performances and keep them inspired to achieve higher musicianship goals! The April Pops Concert is always a hit for the families of Weston!” Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, wrapped it up, “After a year off, we are elated about being able to present the Outdoor Pops Concert again. This event under the moonlight is such a nice opportunity for the entire family to enjoy. Whether you choose to sing along or dance to the beat, all ages will enjoy this concert featuring tunes from all genres of music.”

ndian Trace Elementary (ITE) students certainly enjoyed “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida”. The designated week is designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading and to inspire students and families to make reading part of their daily routines. This year’s theme “Launch into Literacy, Blast Off into New Worlds!” encouraged all schools to participate in reading books with a variety of settings to support the New Worlds Reading Initiative program released this fall. These Little Thunder were buckled up and ready for their out-of-the-world adventure at Weston’s “A-rated” elementary school. The week was filled with so many books, reading activities, and to conclude the week…a special visit with not just one author, but two. Patty DeBiase, a now-retired teacher, brought bilingual authors Susana Illera Martinez and Pilar Velez to the attention of Media Specialist, Dione Mila, after hearing them speak at a book signing at the Columbian Consulate in Miami. Principal Winder quickly agreed that the students would love to meet them and hear their stories of becoming published authors. "We are fortunate to have these two incredible authors visit our Kindergarten, first, second, and third grades. Their passion for writing and storytelling sparks the imagination and the love of reading in our students,” exclaimed Mrs. Mila, Media Specialist. The accomplished authors brought props and slides of their work and spoke with all the younger classes while they eagerly listened and asked plenty of questions. The cafeteria was decorated by Tania Mendez, a Media Center volunteer, and Mrs. Mila. Before their arrival, students were able to pre-purchase their books. Afterward, the authors delivered the signed books with a special message to their classrooms. "I was excited to meet her (Susana), and I liked how she showed the book in the background as she read it. The author told me about the time Disney called her about the book. It was fun,” shared second-grader Aiden Zervoudakis. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate literacy than to have a visit from two passionate authors. The students were able to listen to the story of how their dreams of becoming published authors became reality. They inspired us all,” added Principal, Amy Winder. 30 / Our City Weston / March 2022

CELEBRATE THE ARTS DAY Was A Winner
anuary 25, 2021, was a brisk overcast day in Weston. But in Weston Town Center, approximately 1500 attendees spent the day at Celebrate the Arts, one of the City’s most popular family events. Jami Nix Rahn, Event Coordinator, said, “The Arts Council was very excited to bring back Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center after cancelations due to the covid pandemic. We are so proud to partner with the City of Weston and this year we were joined in partnership by the Weston Music Society who coordinated all of the entertainment with our local school’s Band, Chorus, and Drama departments.”

The day featured a wide variety of activities. Arts Clubs from Cypress Bay High School, Tequesta Trace Middle School, and Sagemont High School all had arts and crafts activities. The Robotics Club and Chess Club from Sagemont were big hits with kids and adults. The Weston Music Society coordinated the entertainment which ran the entire afternoon. The music played and sung by students from Cypress Bay High School, Tequesta Trace and Falcon Cove Middle Schools, Sagemont upper and lower schools, and Youth all Stars had appreciative audiences at all performances. The program ranged from Classic to Jazz to Broadway. Stephanie Bescherelle, WMS Board Member and Music Coordinator for Celebrate said, “Providing an open stage for our local performing arts students is an important goal for the Weston Music Society. We recognize their perseverance and many talents during these challenging times. We applaud their music, chorus, and drama teachers for their dedication. We thank all of them for making the Sunday stage so alive”. Young at Art Museum once again brought great projects for kids of all ages. Long lines gathered at the My Fab offerings of Glitter Tattoos and Balloon Twisting. The “Playing Zoo”, presented by Youth All-Star, offered a hands-on violin opportunity, and demonstrations of wind and brass instruments. A new special feature this year, Master Chalk Artist Ken Mullen created a large-scale 3-D Connect 4 game that was a popular spot to take selfies. Along with the professional artistry, there was an area for everybody to contribute their own chalk creations. As always, everybody flocked to add their art to the 28-foot graffiti wall. Each year, the wall represents an amazing collage of hundreds of drawings. Laura Dobrzanski, Arts Council of Greater Weston President, expressed her enthusiasm for the event and for the community support. “It was incredible to see so many families engaged in the various forms of art taking place all at once, from the arts and crafts activities to the on-stage performances, it truly brought the community together to share in an excitement for the arts and appreciation for the many talented artists and groups we have in our own backyard.”

atch out Weston, there is a new sheriff in town! Her name is K9 Olivia. This new girl spends her days in schools, independent and assisted living facilities, and around town at all kinds of events. This K9 is needed to enhance interactions with both adults and children; help create rapport; relieve anxiety; improve communication; and reduce stress while supporting both adults and children with social interaction skills, especially those with special needs and at-risk students. Olivia came from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Paws and Stripes program. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office selects dogs that would make great Therapy K9s, from the Brevard County Animal Shelter. If chosen, the canines go through a 3-month obedience school before attending an intensive therapy dog course. In September of 2021, Olivia and Deputy Danielle Quinones of Broward Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit in Weston went through the Paw and Stripes College at Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. The dynamic duo completed the United K9s requirements and standards for a Multi-Discipline Therapy K-9 Team and the Law Enforcement Investigative Therapy Dog Course. “I started to notice how more individuals were struggling in the community, so I started to look into therapy dog programs in other police departments and how they benefited their communities,” explained Deputy Quinones. “The therapy dog program provides comfort, emotional support, and positive interactions for both children and adults, in the communities and schools. Therapy dogs can have an invaluable resource for bridging relationship divides and providing positive alternative methods to communicate with others, especially juveniles.” Olivia has been a positive mood stabilizer for the students, especially during the pandemic. One of her favorite activities to participate in is “Seniors and Snuggles”, a program for independent and assisted living facilities. She spends her time with the memory care patients, helping them relax, reduce anxiety, lower the feeling of loneliness, and even help recall memories. “When K9 Olivia interacts with people, she brings such joy and comfort to them. Not only does she have a magic effect on everyone in the community, but she has a dramatic and positive effect on our deputies and employees, as well. She truly puts a smile on everyone’s face,” added Deputy Quinones.

“Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition
F
eeding South Florida, the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in South Florida, is excited to announce its Third Annual “Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition. Elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties are invited to participate for the opportunity to have their artwork converted to one of Feeding South Florida's truck wraps – a 36-foot moving billboard that travels throughout South Florida. The art competition is the first of Feeding South Florida’s several “Summer Hunger Ends Here” initiatives, a campaign designed to raise the awareness and funds necessary to end summer hunger in South Florida. It’s aimed to engage students, their parents, teachers, and schools in a critical issue, while also recognizing and highlighting the talent in our community. Summer months are some of the most difficult times for South Florida families because when school is not in session, some kids don’t have access to free or reduced-price school meals. In South Florida alone, there are nearly 200,000 children who don’t know from where they will get their next meal, and over 500,000 who rely on free or reduced meals during the school year. Seeking to fill the void of school meals, Feeding South Florida is a proud sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program, providing meals to kids at Summer BreakSpots, pop-up mobile pantries in low-income communities. Feeding South Florida also assists families in its Community Caring Centers at both warehouse locations. “We are excited to announce our third annual ‘Feed Your Creativity’ Art Competition that kicksoff our ‘Summer Hunger Ends Here’ campaign,” said Sari Vatske, executive president of Feeding South Florida. “Participating in the art competition allows students to give a voice to nearly 200,000 children who go to bed hungry in South Florida.”

As a woman in medicine or in any other field, the odds are stacked against you. It has taken me a while to be comfortable with my style of leadership, to own my own voice. What I’ve learned is that only you can define yourself, your dreams, and your passion. No matter how big or small they may appear to be, own your dreams, and stand up for them. You may fall, you may get tired, may even want to quit, and that’s normal. Retreating back to basecamp is ok, but only to recover, renew, and then charge back into the chaos. Remember: a winner is just a loser who tried one more time.

How did Kidokinetics come about?
My background of teaching kids from an early age allowed me to see the need for a program that was non-competitive and introduces all sports. Children essentially never did and some still do not have somewhere they can be physically active learning sports and not worry about teams and competition, just be active. We, as adults go to the gym and work out as a stress release, and kids do not have that. I was training, teaching, and competing in karate from a young age and knew not every child would want to do karate and that’s what lead me to develop a program where kids can learn different sports and still focus on coordination, concentration, discipline and get so much out of what they are doing. I want them to build their confidence and empower them to believe they can do anything.
What are the core values of Kidokinetics?
We like to PLAY! (Pass the ball, Leadership on levels, Attitude of gratitude, and Yes, you can!) If you aren’t having fun, you are not doing it right.
What is your vision for your company? My vision is to build this company into a large franchise system with 100 units and get 1 million kids moving.
Please share your views on franchising an industry such as yours.
Franchising is the best way to grow our program while also allowing us to keep to brand guidelines and make sure the program is being replicated appropriately.
Tell us more about your new headquarters.
We've created a great facility with office space, a meeting area, and a training area for our franchisees. We also have an indoor pickleball court! Yes, a pickleball court is a unique element of the office where the Kidokinetics team can take an activity break and have fun while working. Our entire corporate culture is about creating fun physical activity programs for children, so why not add some fun activity to our workdays, too? The court is also available to rent for private games.
As a female business owner, what is your advice to other aspiring businesswomen?
Its sounds so cliché to say never give up if you have a dream because you can achieve it; But you must work hard to get it. Nothing is handed to you and if you have no money and an idea run with it because you can make anything possible if you have passion, loyalty, resilience, and a great work ethic. Do not ever let anyone tell you, you are not good enough. It will happen but that should make you stand taller and stronger.

VICKIE CARTWRIGHT CHOSEN TO LEAD BROWARD SCHOOLS PERMANENTLY By Terry Jaillet

roward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright will get the full-time job. The former Orange County school administrator was chosen by the Broward County School Board after an 8-1 vote in her favor. Lori Alhadeff was the only dissenting vote at a School Board Meeting on February 9. Cartwright has been the interim superintendent since her predecessor, Robert Runcie resigned from the role last year. She was chosen despite initially not being allowed to even apply for the job. The interim superintendent was initially not supposed to be eligible for the full-time role, but Cartwright gained the support of board members and, importantly, The Broward Teachers Union. “In the six months that she has served as interim superintendent, she has proven to be an intelligent and excellent leader with an ability to listen to and work with all constituencies,” said Teachers Union President Anna Fusco in a prepared statement. “She quickly gained a keen understanding of the district’s challenges and opportunities. I look forward to continuing
the positive and fruitful relationship we have created and to Dr. Cartwright’s long tenure as the leader of Broward County Public Schools.” The school board had narrowed the search to two finalists. Along with Cartwright was retired Air Force Colonel Michael Gaal. Gaal has held a number of leadership positions in large schools systems after his military service. He was never a teacher, however. Some board members pointed to this fact as a reason to prefer Cartwright. “The beginning of my career is one that is truly based on relationships and the value of understanding the importance in ensuring that we put students first,” Cartwright told the board. “During my 7th-grade year, unfortunately, my family did become homeless.” “I am humbled. I am honored,” Cartwright said after the vote, “One of my initial interests at this point is really going out and recruiting the best-qualified candidates for those (key) positions.” Alhadeff explained the reasoning for her vote for Gaal, saying, “he was the stronger leader
in totality, as far as being able to question the status quo, hold people accountable.” Cartwright will have her work cut out for in managing the nation’s sixth-largest school system. There are currently vacancies in several key management positions.

WESTON WORLD FEST RETURNS IN FULL FASHION
T
he awarding-winning 7th annual Weston World Fest returns to Weston Regional Park with a full display of our wonderful international community. The City of Weston and the Arts Council of Greater Weston are delighted to announce that this popular free event will be held Sunday, March 6, 2022, noon to 4:00pm. Arts Council President Laura Dobrzanski, is thrilled with a return to our full presentations, noting, “Last year, everyone pitched in to make the World Fest Drive Thru a success. We are delighted to be able to return to the park with our usual full display.” Twenty interactive country booths will interpret this year’s festival theme “Seasons”, giving viewers a peek at what it’s like to spend a year in each country. New to the lineup are Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Paraguay and Kazakhstan. All ages will enjoy the costumes, music, and interactive activities representing these diverse cultures. There will also be a “Garden” section dedicated to sponsors and local nonprofit organizations, offering information and additional photo ops. As always, the event features a student Passport Program so our young crowd can take a tour of the world. Students can receive free tickets for different activity stations such as henna art, balloon art and airbrush tattoos based on the number of countries they visit. Our entertainment lineup, representing many cultures, will perform live the stage. Expect to see colorfully dressed dancers and hear music representing such far-flung locations as India, Brazil, the British Isles, Spain, the Middle Ease and the Caribbean. To please your palate, food vendors will offer a taste of a variety of international cuisines, including Greek, Italian, Spanish and other global fare. These will be available for purchase. Helping Autistic Adults Perform & Excel

AAPE (Helping Autistic Adults Perform and Excel) is a Weston-based non-profit foundation IRS 501(c)(3) with the mission to create, fund and sustain meaningful employment opportunities and provide support for adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). HAAPE is the Rotary’s newest charity. Founded in 2016, it is an all-volunteer organization whereby over 98% of funds are allocated to programs. HAAPE is focused on employment, as people on the Spectrum suffer from 80-90% unemployment/underemployment rates despite being loyal, productive, and highly focused. They have been called the Hidden Workforce. HAAPE is developing a local job board and is seeking companies with immediate employment opportunities, for both full and part-time. The Job Board allows both the employer and the employee to post their skills and then match the needs of the business with the capabilities of the candidate. HAAPE plans to expand this across the country and is already developing programs with some very large companies. HAAPE has teamed with the University of Miami/ Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM/NSU-CARD) to assist the City of Weston to become an Autism Friendly City. The City Government, Mayor, Commissioners, and department heads participated in a briefing about what is needed to become a more inclusive city. The Parks and Recreation Department Heads had a more in-depth briefing about how the parks can become more inclusive. The YMCA will soon receive a similar session and plans are in place for the city’s first responders including the police, fire, and rescue. oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

Turning the big 4-0 can be an exciting milestone — a year that, for many people, signifies transformation and transition. Actually, the decline in your near vision has been happening gradually since childhood and only now are you beginning to "see" the difference. Just like your body, your eyes and vision change over time. While not everyone will experience the same symptoms, you may start noticing some common age-related vision changes, including the need for more light, problems with glare, changes in color perception, and reduced tear production.
Vision changes are a natural part of the aging process
As you age, you may need to hold reading materials farther away to see them clearly or if you are nearsighted, you might need to remove your glasses to see better up close. Print in the newspaper or on a restaurant menu may appear blurred, especially under dim lighting. Losing this focusing ability for near vision, called presbyopia, is a natural part of the aging process and occurs because the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible. This flexibility allows the eye to change focus from objects that are far away to objects that are close. As you continue to age, presbyopia becomes more advanced. You may notice that you need to change your eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions more frequently than you used to. While presbyopia can’t be prevented or cured, with the proper vision correction and treatment, most people regain clear, comfortable near vision for all of their lifestyle needs. During these years, annual visits to your doctor of optometry for comprehensive eye exams are essential to check for developing eye and vision problems. Don't rely on the limited driver's license vision test or other insufficient vision screenings to determine if something’s wrong. Remember that only regular, ongoing eye care with your optometrist can protect and preserve your vision. That’s because many eye diseases have no early symptoms. They may develop painlessly, and you may not notice the changes to your vision until the condition is quite advanced. Changes in your focusing ability are pretty normal, but you still should be on the lookout for

How to Grip a Golf Club Correctly By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
T
he golf grip is often overlooked when trying to cure a slice or any other problem with a shot for that matter. Knowing the correct way to grip a golf club could help you see an end to your hooks and slices and have you on your way to a lower handicap. One thing I often see when people have problems with their grip is they tend to hold it too much in their palm. Gripping the golf club too much in the palm leads to a loss of wrist action, which is a great source of power. Limiting the wrist action will lead to a loss of power and feel in the golf club. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the golf club more in the fingers than the palms results in an increased amount of wrist hinge, which means longer tee shots and more feel. You don’t have to grip it hard to hit it hard! So many times, I see people choking their clubs to death to try and hit it longer. In actual fact gripping the club this hard can seriously decrease the distance you get on your shots. The Vardon grip is a popular way of holding the golf club and it is seen as a proper golf grip for distance. Many pros use this grip today, but it was made popular by a golfer known as Harry Vardon way back at the turn of the 20th century. This golf grip is taught by many professional golf instructors to beginners, and it’s ideal for getting players to grip the club in their fingers rather than their palms. To use the Vardon grip, all you do is overlap the pinky of your trailing hand (in a right-handed golfer’s case, the right hand is the trailing hand) and place it between the middle and index finger of the lead hand (which is the left for a right-handed golfer). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand. This works especially well for players with large hands. Make sure that when looking down at address, you can see the first two knuckles of your left hand and a “V” formed between the thumb and forefinger pointing toward your right shoulder. With the right hand, have the “V” pointing toward your chin or slightly to the right shoulder. Trust me, this works! This Interlock grip literally locks the hands together, but the golfer also runs the risk of having the handle stray into the palms of the hands. People with medium sized hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners in many cases prefer this style of grip. To apply the interlocking grip, you start off by taking the little finger on the trailing hand (the trailing hand is the right hand for right handed golfers) and intertwine it with the index finger on the lead hand. The lead hand’s thumb should fit perfectly into the lifeline of the trailing hand. In every sport, physical strength and conditioning are important to succeed. Golf is no different. Strong forearms and wrists are essential for golf success and they play a huge part in developing a proper golf grip.

Periodic vaccine risk assessments help ensure that your pet is properly immunized against infectious diseases. Rabies is a deadly disease that is generally fatal in all species. Vaccination against rabies is required by law in most states.
Why Are Annual Examinations Important? Regular physical examinations are essential to maintaining your pet’s health. A thorough examination checks every major body organ and system.
• Eyes—The eyes will be checked for redness, cloudiness, or discharge. • Ears—Many pets suffer from ear infections. Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s ear canals for possible signs of an ear problem: debris, waxy buildup, or trauma caused by scratching. • Mouth—Your veterinarian will look in your pet’s mouth for signs of dental disease and for broken or missing teeth. If he or she sees any

problems, your veterinarian may recommend a thorough dental examination and cleaning for your pet. Respiratory system—Your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs. Digestive system—Your veterinarian will “palpate” (feel) your pet’s abdomen for signs of discomfort and to check that the major organs are the right size and shape. Musculoskeletal system—Your veterinarian will palpate all your pet’s major muscles and bones to check for signs of weakness or pain. Skin and hair coat—Your veterinarian will check of all your pet’s “lumps and bumps.” If anything suspicious is found, a biopsy or lump removal may be recommended. Laboratory tests—During a routine examination, your veterinarian may also want to take samples of your pet’s blood, urine, and feces to obtain additional information about your pet’s health or to ensure that specific body systems are functioning properly.
During your pet’s examination, your veterinarian will also ask you many questions about your pet’s behavior, lifestyle, and health history since your last visit. The answers to these questions will help your veterinarian determine what preventive care recommendations he or she should make in order to help keep your pet healthy. Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and disease risk, your veterinarian will recommend vaccinations for your pet. In virtually every state, vaccination against rabies is required by law.

oad and traffic safety includes considerations for people of all ages. Parents and caregivers need to understand how to keep their families safe in and around vehicles. Florida law requires the use of seat belts for drivers, front-seat passengers, and all children riding in a car under age 18. Florida law also requires children age five and under be secured correctly in a crashtested, federally approved child restraint device or car seat. Children under age 12 should only ride in the back seat since deployed front seat airbags may be dangerous to children. Parents can model safe driving behaviors that can help set positive examples and rules for teen drivers. Traffic crashes are estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death for people of all ages and are the leading cause of preventable injuries and deaths among teenagers and children in the United States. Studies show that teens are 3X more likely to be involved in traffic crashes, with most teen crashes resulting from driver distractions and speeding. As teens approach driving age, parents should
establish safe driving rules that include distraction-free driving, not allowing extra passengers, following speed limits, no impaired driving, and always wearing a seat belt. Parents or Caregivers of teen drivers should also be aware of Florida’s Graduated Driver’s License Laws, which include driving age, time, and passenger restrictions. For more information on teen driver safety, join the BSOFR Public Education Team for their virtual education presentation Teen Driver Safety on March 18th at 3:00 pm. Correctly used child safety seats can further reduce the risk of child deaths by 71 percent. More than half of the car seats purchased are not being used or are installed incorrectly. Selecting the right car seat, using it in the correct direction and location in the vehicle, and properly installing it are essential considerations for parents. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue (BSOFR) Public Education Team of Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians can assist parents/caregivers with car seat installations. Virtual car seat
appointments are available online at https:// BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/. Another important safety consideration for parents of small children is making sure to never leave a child alone in a car. On average, every ten days, a child dies from heatstroke in a vehicle. In more than 50% of these deaths, the caregiver forgot the child was in the car. Create reminders to help you remember your child is in the car. Be sure to lock car doors when the vehicle is not in use and set rules to ensure that children do not play in or around cars, including parked cars. Additional considerations may be needed to ensure that drivers are appropriately fitted to their vehicles as we age. Car Fit is an educational program designed by AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association that provides a comprehensive review of how well a person and their vehicle work together to enhance driver safety and mobility. Car Fit helps people explore and make vehicle adjustments to achieve their safest fit. The BSOFR Public Education Team will host a virtual Car Fit presentation on March 30th at 2:00pm.
