FCATs are over and the end of the school year is in sight. The sun is hotter and the pool is getting warmer. Summer vacations and camps are on the horizon. This is also the month to recognize mothers for the sacrifices and dedication they show us every day. From the time we are born our mothers are there to care for us, pamper us and console us when needed. Endless hours are spent nursing boo-boo’s, helping with homework, driving to and from school and activities, cleaning up after us, and worrying about our future. Now it is time to pamper them. Give mom some flowers. Treat her to a nice meal. Purchase a special gift. Most of all, don’t forget to offer a heartfelt “Thank You.” A hug and a kiss go a long way too. Be a Part of the July 4th Parade By Julie Levin
E
veryone loves a parade and now is your chance to be a part
of Plantation’s annual July 4th festivities. The City of Plantation is looking for participants for their annual Independence Day Parade, and they are encouraging everyone to get involved. “The City’s annual Independence Day Parade is open to anyone: groups, organizations, associations, businesses, families, or individuals,” said Ken Boyce, the City’s Superintendent of Recreation. The parade will be held Wednesday, July 4th and Boyce is anticipating as many as 60-75 entries to take part in the two-hour parade. Entries have to be in by June 21, and then it is simply a matter of decorating. This year, the City has a theme they’d like everyone to follow.”This year, in honor of the City’s 60th Birthday, the theme of our Independence Day Parade is 60 Years of Celebrating Our Nation Get on board to part of this year’s Independence Day Parade in Plantation. Applications must be turned in by June 21

While some travel by float, others can be nothing more than a sign on a car, or a family or group walking the parade route. The city does not supply the signage or method of transportation. The city’s Independence Day festivities won’t end after the parade. There will also be include a carnival, concert in Central Park and a beautiful fireworks display later in the day. Boyce said the city-wide celebration dates back to Plantation’s earliest days. “The annual parade is a long-time tradition in Plantation. As early as 1948, before Plantation became a city in 1953, residents gathered to celebrate July 4th with a street parade and community picnic. Today the parade and the free Patriotic Applications are welcome Evening held at Central Park, see from businesses, groups, organizations, associations, thousands of residents coming families, or individuals together as a community to celebrate our national freedoms. It really reinforces Plantation’s hometown feeling, which is why so many families choose to live here,” Boyce said. Parade applications can be picked up at City facilities and online at www.plantation.org. There is no charge to participate in the parade, but applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on June 21. Summer Fun Awaits at Plantation Day Camps By Julie Levin

f your child is a sports fan , you may want to consider a brand
new option for his or her summer camp plans. As part of its slate of camp options, the City is offering a specialized Sports Camp this summer. It’s called Camp ELITE and is designed to fill a need for young athletes in the city. “We have been asked over the years if we had a sports camp, so we thought it was a good time to bring it in and see what the response was,” said Shannon Ryan Superintendent of Facilities. Geared for youngsters ages 7-12 and offered at Volunteer Park, Camp ELITE includes activities designed to enhance performance, develop strength, as well as equip athletes to manage emotional challenges and develop the leader within. Sport experiences include football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and more. Weekly activities will also include field trips, swim trips and special events. Offered by Pear Programs, Ryan says they were impressed by the programs experience and staff, many of whom are collegiate athletes. While appealing to sports lovers, Camp ELITE was also created to serve as a replacement for the day camp formerly run at the Kennedy Community Center. “Once it was taken down, we wanted to make sure we had enough camp space for all of the kids we serviced last year, so we knew we had to provide another other camp at a new location,” said Ryan. The City’s popular Day Camps will still be offered for ages 5-11 at Central Park and Volunteer Park. The camps are designed to give the child a well-rounded camp experience, with weekly activities including sports, arts & crafts, field trips, swim trips and special events. There are also Neighborhood Day Camps for the same age group offered at the Jim Ward Community Center, which are designed to give the child an on-site day camp experience. Activities there include sports, arts & crafts, special events and more. Older children, ages 12-14, have the option of Adventure Camp at Central Park, which provides teens with more specialized field trips and higher level activities.

If your child has a song in their heart, consider the Musical Theater and Activity Camp for ages 5-11 at the Jim Ward Community Center. Performers to be will learn hip hop warm ups, musical theater routines and acting scenes from various shows. Also included in the daily schedule will be theater games for creativity and team work, arts & crafts, gymnastics, sports, games and water play. ou can ’ t blame L aurie Finkelstein R eader and
her staff for feeling like a million bucks. Finkelstein Reader and 11 other real estate workers at the Plantation-based Keller Williams Partner Realty recently had the dream of a lifetime come true when they hit a winning Powerball ticket worth one million dollars. The 12 employees chipped in $20 each for a spot in the office lottery pool for the March 23rd drawing which was worth $338 million dollars. They matched 5 winning numbers, good enough for a one million dollar prize. Even though Finkelstein Reader said they expect to take home about $83,000 each, it is not going to mean an early retirement. “It is going to be back to work for me,” said the Realtor, who leads the team. While huge news for the twelve real estate professionals, news of their win went global after the crew decided to pay forward their good fortune, and to include a new employee, who decided not to join the pool until she received her first paycheck. Their generosity has been featured on news outlets across the world, and may even land them a spot on the cover of People Magazine. The team is a bit surprised, but enjoying their new found fame. “The publicity has been crazy. I never thought that by doing what comes natural and what should be done would get so much attention around the world. We are hopeful that more people will do the right thing and pay it forward,” said Finkelstein Reader, who is a longtime South Florida resident. this month, as they go fashion forward and take to the runway for a good cause. Our Savior Lutheran Church in Plantation will be hosting its Spring Fling Fashion Show and Luncheon May 11, and the models may just be people you know. “Some of the models are from our Youth Group and the other are ladies from the church,” said Judy Watson, the chairwoman of the event.

More than 100 people are expected to attend the event, which will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, which is located at 8001 N.W. 5th Street. The day will begin with the fashion show. The models will walk a runway that will be laid out amongst the decorated tables guests will be sitting at. The models will be wearing designs from the Dress Barn, and each woman will have the chance to select a casual, dressy and business outfit. A representative from the store will emcee the event and will be at the microphone describing the different fashions. Following the fashion show, guests will enjoy lunch prepared by the members of the church. The event is being organizing by the church’s Women’s Group in coordination with their Youth Group. While they don’t have a dollar amount in mind, they do know the proceeds will be going to help defray the costs of a trip for members of their Youth Group. Nine youngsters and two chaperones will be headed to the 2013 National LCMS Youth Gathering in San Antonio, Texas in early July. The five-day event provides an opportunity for young people to learn more about their faith and Lutheran identity. It is held every three years, and drew close to 30,000 participants the last time it was held. Our Savior Lutheran Church was organized in 1961 and currently boasts a membership of 850. The parish offers a wide spectrum of opportunities for worship, spiritual projects, youth and families ministries. Watson says the Fashion Show and Luncheon will be a great way to spend an afternoon, while helping out with a good cause. “It helps the youth in the community and we love for people to come see our church,” Watson said. The Fashion Show will be held May 11, beginning at 11 a.m. Tickets are $12 per person and $6 for those ten and under. The show is open to the community. Once again, they have a full slate of activities planned for children and teens from June 8 to August 3rd. The fun gets started with their Summer Kickoff, which will be held June 8 for all ages from 2 to 3 p.m. After the “Fantastic Magic Show,” featuring Robert Hermens, youngsters will have a chance to sign up for the summer reading program. The Kids program, called “Dig Into Reading” is an incentive program to keep students reading over the summer. Sponsored in part by the Miami Dolphins, kids get to create a game board and for every 30 minutes read of whatever book they like, they get to move along the game board. Once a week, they can bring the game board to any Broward County Library and collect a small prize. Preschool or younger children also get a game board created by the Collaborative Summer Library Program. For every book that they read or have read to them, they also get to move long the board and collect a small prize. After middle and high school students read a book, then fill out a form asking for their opinion of the book. This form becomes their raffle ticket for a chance to win big prizes.

Plantation Women Recognized as Women of Distinction By Julie Levin

wo Plantation women who have dedi -
cated themselves to giving back to our community were recently recognized for their philanthropic efforts. Jennifer Cohen and Pam Kirtman are among the four local honorees named Broward Hadassah’s 2013 Women of Distinction. The woman were honored April 14 at a luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. “Each of these women are being recognized for their extraordinary work and contributions to the betterment of our community. They exemplify the essence of “tikkun olam” or “healing the world.” It is because of their involvement, we, residents of Broward County and beyond reap the good that they offer,” said Isa Joseph, event chair and Hadassah Area Vice President through a press release. Pam Kirtman was honored for her on-going work with Becca’s Closet, the non-profit organization she founded to continue her late daughter Rebecca’s project of donating formal prom, homecoming and military ball dresses to high school girls and special needs groups with financial need. During her freshman year at Nova High School in Davie, Rebecca launched a dress drive to provide prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who could not afford them. She collected more than 250 formal dresses and helped hundreds of girls across South Florida attend their High School proms in style before passing away in an automobile accident in August

2003. In addition to her work with Becca’s Closet, Kirtman works at Nova High School as a post secondary advisor. “It is such so kind of Hadassah to include me amongst its four Women of Distinction. I feel honored and humbled by the recognition,” said Kirtman. Jennifer Cohen’s mission also came about due to a life altering event. In 2003, her twin daughters Sydney and Alexandria were born 10 weeks premature and spent almost two months in incubators in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. Now 10-years old, her daughters are healthy and thriving. Cohen founded The Sydney & Alexandria Cohen Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money to buy and donate state-of-the-art GE Omnibed Giraffe incubators to the NICU at Memorial Hospital West. “I could not think of a better way to honor and celebrate my healthy children while helping future premature babies in our community have the best chance for a healthy life and, at the same time, teach my daughters the values of tikkun olam,” said Cohen who works at the Jewish Federation of Broward County as the Public Relations Associate. Cohen and Kirtman were honored alongside Davia Mazur of Cooper City and Roz Rosen of Hallandale Beach. Mazur was recognized for her work promoting cultural arts in the Jewish community and Rosen is a fifthgeneration Hadassah member who has served in many leadership roles.

TAG USA Gymnastics Brings Home Back-to-Back State Championships
I
f you want to be the best, you need to train with the best. That’s why so many young gymnasts are joining TAG USA Gymnastics in Weston. Owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan created structured classes for beginners, added the best equipment, and built the largest and most comfortable facility, putting TAG USA in a class by itself.
Even more impressive are the back-to-back State Championships and incredible success of both the girls and boys gymnastics teams. In 2011 and 2012, TAG USA won the Florida State Championships for USAG Level 3 and Level 4 girls gymnastics. TAG USA also won the 2012 State Championship for USAG Prep-Optionals with five members selected to Team Florida. Along with many individual State and Regional Champions, TAG USA had its first Boys Regional Champion and National Qualifier this year. TAG USA is much more than a training powerhouse with championship programs. It is a full-service gymnastics center built upon the success of its exceptional recreational gymnastics program. From beginner classes to team, each class has a specific lesson plan and coaches evaluate each gymnast by skill. Owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan explain why this high-level training coupled with the gym’s award-winning summer camp, popular open gym sessions, and fabulous birthday parties, make TAG USA the “place to be.”
To what do you attribute TAG USA’s success and growth? Marissa: It all begins with parents signing up their young children in our classes. Our gym has a lot of space, equipment and we use qualified coaches to teach our beginner athletes the proper way of learning gymnastics. TAG USA has grown because parents believe in our program, love our facility, and see their children’s success. Michael: That success is evident if you look around the gym at all the trophies, including our back-to-back State Championships.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishments? Marissa: The success of our teams is a great accomplishment. We bought the gym four years ago with the goal to build a program that emulates the top gyms found in Central Florida and the Midwest. With State Champs, Regional Champs, Team Florida members, and National Qualifiers, we can be considered the best. The success proves that our class programs and team training methods work very well. Michael: This would not be possible without proper planning. We hired experienced coaches and managers who
organized our classes and created convenient schedules. Parents are very happy with our program and, more importantly, our gymnasts are learning and feel good about themselves.
What is the foundation of your training program?
Marissa: First, we train as a USAG gym. Second, our coaches safely train our athletes for higher skills and proper technique. As a Marissa and Michael Zoldan former Elite gymnast, I know that athletes succeed easier with inner core strength, proper conditioning, and repetition of basic skills. Our excellent coaching staff encourages gymnasts to progress at their own pace while learning higher skills. At TAG USA, we encourage progress.
What distinguishes TAG USA from other gyms? Michael: Most dif-
ferent is that, as owners, Marissa and I are always at the gym, talking with families and making sure that parents and children are satisfied. Anyone who walks into this gym is impressed. Our gym is 38,000 square-feet with plenty of comfortable waiting areas for parents and siblings. We also invested in proper equipment. Boys have all of the necessary equipment to learn all of the events in gymnastics. Tumbling and trampoline classes have five trampolines, three tumble tracks, and three spring floors at their disposal. Our huge training space and state-of-the-art equipment allows athletes to train more without waiting in lines. Marissa: TAG USA is known as the “Home for Champions” and we want all children to feel like champions. We award all recreational class children with a medal at the end of their session because we want to develop every child’s self esteem as well as their gymnastics skills. For convenience, all classes run at the same time so siblings can be in separate classes during the same hour.
In addition to gymnastics, what other programs do you offer?
Michael: TAG USA’s Saturday Night Open Gym allows kids to hang out, flip in the pit, and play sports, all closely supervised by our TAG coaches, while their parents go out for date night. Marissa: Our birthday parties are the most popular party packages around. Families get an hour and fifteen minutes of play time in the gym, including use of four giant inflatables, plus one of our three private party rooms for cake time.
Your Summer Sports Camp is also quite popular. What do you have planned this summer? Michael: Our Summer Sports Camp was
voted Best Summer Camp of 2012. For boys, we have indoor basketball and soccer in addition to the pit-flipping and trampoline flying. Our camp director makes sure that campers have non-stop action. Parents love our camp because they know their children are constantly active, safe, secure and happy. We perform background checks and fingerprint all of our camp coaches. Marissa: We offer ten weeks of summer camp with flexible options. You can buy a one day experience ($45) or one week package ($195). You can also purchase camp packages for five to ten weeks with significant discounts. We also do not charge a registration fee. TAG USA has a half day Preschool Camp for three and four year olds. Our Senior Camp is for ages five and older. Camp groups are divided gender and by age. TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. ver the last few years many TAG USA families have been generous to donate food items, toys and money to support the efforts of the TAG USA Foundation. The charity was founded by Marissa Zoldan, a two-time cancer survivor herself, to battle the effects of cancer and support families that become afflicted with poverty or homelessness. Under Marissa’s guidance the TAG USA Foundation is organizing fundraisers and collecting donations not only to find a cure against cancer, but also to financially and emotionally support the families of cancer victims, which all to often are forced into a financial crisis due to the horrendous medical expenses associated with cancer treatment. Many families lose their income, their savings or their homes due to the costs of surgeries, treatments and medications. TAG USA Gymnastics recently hosted a Trampoline & Tumbling competition with 150 competing athletes from around Florida. TAG USA Gymnastics owners, Marissa and Michael Zoldan, took a portion of the entry fees and donated $1,500 to the Foundation. By partnering with Kids in Distress the charity holds annual toy drives and food donations to help under-privileged kids struck by poverty and homelessness. hile still modest in size and scope , organizers behind the
new garden at the WECARE Food Pantry are determined to make their project flourish, and to set down long lasting roots in the community. Susan Baigelman, the Director of WECARE says the more their garden grows, the better it will be for the community.”One of the things we are hoping over time is that the more we produce in the garden, the more fresh fruit and vegetables we will be able to give to clients who come to the food pantry,” Baigelman said. Installed nearly two months ago, the new organic garden which is made up of two small beds, is already getting ready to reap its first harvest of tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and eggplant. The bounty will be distributed among clients at the WECARE Food Pantry, which is a program of the Soref JCC in Plantation that helps an estimated 10,000 people a year.

The garden was funded thanks to a grant from the Plantation Garden Club. “It is related to our goals of furthering interest in gardening and at the same time it provided an opportunity for charitable giving, which is also part of our mission,” said Sheryl Melson, the President of the Plantation Garden Club.The group presented funding to “Hands On Broward’, a charity organization that runs a community garden initiative as part of its mission and helped to construct the beds and plants. The care and maintenance of the garden will be handled by WECARE, which decided to start small until their volunteers had a team in place capable of managing the project.”We definitely plan on growing,”said Baigelman. The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. In 2011, WECARE provided enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals. “We serve people in our community who are struggling, some are seniors, some are families who have lost jobs,” she said. WECARE is hoping to involve community volunteers, as well as the JCC’s preschool children, in the garden project. They are currently putting together a volunteer committee to help coordinate the process. Chamber of Commerce to Honor Small Business Person of the Year By Julie Levin
A
n annual event to shine a spotlight on the importance of
local small business owners is once again set for this month. The Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce will formally unveil its 2013 Small Business Person of the Year at a luncheon sponsored by the Broward County Council of Chambers. The event will take place May 31 at the Renaissance Hotel in Plantation. “It is a wonderful way to enhance the chamber and the members,” said Lynn Sklar, the Director of Membership and Marketing for the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce.
The luncheon is held in honor of Small Business Week and includes Chambers from throughout Broward County. During the event, each local Chamber is given the opportunity to personally introduce their honoree, as their family, friends and co-workers cheer them on. The honoree is selected from nominations made from other chamber members, and this year Sklar said the Plantation Chamber received 12 nominations. Those nominated must have contributed to the community by conducting a successful and profitable business. In addition, they should have been involved with Chamber and community projects by giving time, energy and resources. Other qualifications include being in business at least two years and having fewer than 50 employees, being an owner or partner of the business and actively involved in the day to day management and being able to show that business has experienced growth or other measurable indicator of business success in the past twelve months. Sklar says she’s been to 14 luncheons and enjoys the message the event sends out. “It’s to honor your Plantation Chamber of Commerce and the small business person,” she said. Created in 1961, the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c) 6 not-for-profit organization and is one of the largest and most active Chambers in Broward County, with a membership made up of nearly 400 companies. The group serves as a catalyst for the economic success of its members and the City of Plantation - providing opportunities for growth, leadership, community partnership and a voice for the business community. The Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce enables the community’s business people to thrive by providing opportunities for leadership, networking, innovative business programs, education, and giving back to the community. Plantation Celebrates “Sixty and Fabulous” with Dinner Dance By Julie Levin

ith all of the memorable
events of the 60’s swirling around them, the City of Plantation marked its own 60th milestone with an formal anniversary event recently. To mark their Diamond Jubilee, organizers hosted the City of Plantation’s “Sixty and Fabulous” Anniversary Gala- a Cocktail Reception and Dinner Dance on April 12 at the Renaissance Plantation Hotel. Hosted by the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce, the “Sixty and Fabulous” Anniversary Gala took guests back to the 60’s while also incorporating memories of great eras gone by. Guests enjoyed a formal dinner, cocktails, dancing and live music. The gala celebrated the City’s 60th Anniversary, while also honoring the City’s Mayor and City Council Members. In addition, they also introduced the new Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce’s Inaugural Trustee Members. “Plantation: 60 and Fabulous” was just the latest event this year designed to celebrate the City’s milestone. Several months ago, the City unveiled its “60 Years and Counting” exhibit at the Plantation Historical Museum. Guests that haven’t seen it yet have only until May 11 to do so, before the exhibit is taken down. For anyone still interested in learning more about Plantation, they can pick up a copy of a new book chronicling Plantation’s history. “Images of America: Plantation” debuted February 7. The brand new book details through photos and images the distinctive stories that have shaped Plantation over the years and was authored by Shirley Schuler, the Curator of the Plantation Historical Museum. With its launch, the book became part of the Images of America series, produced by Arcadia Publishing, which chronicles the history of small towns and downtowns across the country.
Other events included “Celebrate Plantation’s 60th Birthday Twilight Concert and Expo,” presented by Plantation General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center and coordinated by the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce, the City of Plantation and the Plantation Police Department. The event provided a great chance for families to come together and enjoy the music of the band Sekond Nature. The City will continue the 60th anniversary celebration on July 4th, when they’ll host 60 Years of Celebrating Our Nation together- an Independence Day Parade & Patriotic Evening with a special Children’s Carnival.

Local School, Residents Recognized for Green Efforts By Julie Levin
A
s thousands of people roamed around them learning about
environmental conservation, a team from South Plantation High School was recently honored for an environmental project that has been flourishing for the past seven years. During the 11th Annual Water Matters Day March 9 at Tree Tops Park, South Plantation’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program was recognized with a NatureScape Emerald Award for its Hammock Project at Plantation’s Jack Carter Harmony Park. Organized by Broward County’s Environmental Protection and Growth Management department, Water Matters Day not only brings environmental conservation awareness to the community, but also provides a chance to recognize citizens for their efforts in protecting the South Florida environment. Created by South Plantation students in 2006, the hammock has been used as a hands on student project ever since. While the City of Plantation granted permission for the initial installation, it has been students getting their hands dirty through the planting, maintaining, weeding and mulching of the garden. The outdoor classroom also lets students study different species, and provide opportunities for the community to work alongside them at different green-themed conservation

events, such as National Public Lands Day, Green Apple Day and Arbor Day. “The hammock provides an outdoor classroom for magnet students, while adding to the local biodiversity and habitat for local wildlife,” said Botany Instructor Pamela Krauss through a press release. “We are honored to have our hard work recognized while contributing to the local environcoordinator Pam Krauss with second ment.” During the award ceremony, Magnet place essay winner senior Maya Halaly and South Plantation senior, Maya Broward School Board Vice Chair Patricia Good. Halaly, was awarded second place for her essay on conservation. Water Matters Day is Broward County’s signature water conservation event where residents learn about local and regional water resources, how water is managed and how Broward is planning for the future. Among the many vendors on display was the city of Plantation, as well as South Plantation’s ER-- Everglades Restoration--Ambassadors who helped educate the public through interactive activities in their mobile water bus classroom.. Two Plantation residents, Colleen Hendrix and Patricia Barnes, were also among the other homeowners, governments and other groups honored as NatureScape Emerald Award Winners. NatureScape yards are designed to conserve water by using native plants in place of lawn; provide food, water and shelter to wildlife; use integrated pest control practices; reduce storm-water contaminated by pesticides and fertilizers; and recycle yard waste into mulch and compost.

iving with M ultiple Sclerosis since 2004 has definitely meant
changes in Emma Garcia’s life, but she is quick to point out it hasn’t taken over the way she chooses to live. Instead, Garcia is determined to make a difference fighting back. “MS doesn’t define you. It can mean so many things. It is just your new normal,” said the 40-year old Garcia. Most recently, Garcia volunteered to help out during the National MS Society’s Bike MS event, a two-day, 200-mile bike ride from Miami to Key Largo and back. She also helped lead the fundraising efforts for the Plantation-based office of Aetna, where she works. For the first time, the company sponsored a cycling team in the event. In the weeks leading up to the ride, Garcia coordinated a week’s worth of fundraising activities-- selling coffee, raffle tickets, and signed items. She also put together a reception at Studio 5 Ten in Lauderhill. “All of the money we raised is going towards the MS Society to raise funds for research,” Garcia said. Fundraising has become a key component of Garcia’s life, volunteering on behalf of others not just with MS, but other local causes as well. She also serves as a national advisor for her company’s Hispanic Resource Group. Her motivation is in part personal, but also a result of her work helping others with disabilities through Aetna. “I see the impact that it has on individuals and their livelihood. It is just very debilitating and I don’t think that people realize the struggle that people have with this condition because it is not always outwardly apparent,” she said. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis website, MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. Though it has meant dealing with occasional limitations, Garcia tries to stay active through exercise and spending time with her two-year old granddaughter. She also credits her employer and friends with helping her to adapt when she has a recurrence. “They are all part of the process and lifestyle I now have to live,” she said. Ironically, Garcia has been fighting MS far longer than when she was diagnosed with the illness. As a young girl, she and her family took part in a fundraising walk for MS that had them walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Though she had no link to MS then, the walk stayed with her for years and she also frequently donated to other MS events. “I had no idea what MS was. New Loan Modification Program Launched in South Florida By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
C
ommunication failure between lender and borrower is the
principal reason why more loan modifications are not successful. After much anticipation, on April 1, 2013, the all new Loss Mitigation Mediation (“LMM”) Program was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts to combat communication failures. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. A similar program was recently launched in Central Florida bankruptcy courts, resulting in an 85% modification success rate. If you are in foreclosure, or behind on your mortgage payments, and have tried to modify your mortgage to no avail, here are the reasons why you should now consider participating in the LMM program.
First, under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled the moment you file your petition. Unlike a traditional loan modification, the LMM program is completely court supervised. This means that a United States federal judge will ensure that your lender “plays by the rules,” that all loan modification negotiations are concluded, and a definitive response to your application is provided within short, established timeframe. In addition, under the LMM program, you will participate in mediation, which is a formal negotiation meeting with a representative from the bank that has full authority to modify your loan, and settle your case. Another unique feature of the LMM program is that it completely eliminates the “lost document” scenario. Anyone that has attempted to modify their home loan has certainly felt the frustration every time their lender claims they never received certain documents, even though they were already sent by the homeowner. Under the LMM program, all required financial documents for a loan modification are uploaded to a single digital portal so that all parties concerned timely receive and have access to the documents in a confidential setting. If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a complete loan modification application, after having received all the necessary documents electronically, the homeowner now has the right to enforce a prompt reply from their lender through the court. Under this new scenario, a United States federal court judge has the authority to impose serious monetary and other sanctions on a lender that fails to timely comply with the LMM program guidelines. In short, the new LMM program is an excellent new alternative for homeowners that provides justice, and evens the playing field in the otherwise unpredictable world of home loan modifications. Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction, is a common ailment. It is the result of progressive lowering of the arch secondary to weakness or tearing of the tendons and ligaments that support it. Here is a closer look at the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatment options.
Causes:
▸▸ Inflammation of a tendon on the inside of the ankle and foot from overuse (uphill running) or wearing excessive flat or worn shoes. ▸▸ Rupture or tearing of the major tendon (posterior tibial) supporting the arch. ▸▸ Weakening or tearing of the ligaments supporting the arch and foot joints. ▸▸ Connective tissue disease (i.e. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and Reiter’s syndrome). ▸▸ Trauma to the foot or ankle (i.e. bad sprain turning the foot down and out). ▸▸ Flatfoot deformity that progresses over time. ▸▸ Associated with diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Signs and Symptoms:
▸▸ Pain in the arch and inner ankle when walking. ▸▸ Difficulty standing in one place without developing pain in the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Unable to run or participate in sports. ▸▸ Swelling inside the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Weakness of the muscles and ligaments supporting the arch. ▸▸ Lowering or flattening of the arch causing a flatfoot deformity. ▸▸ Foot starts to deform and bulge on the inner ankle and foot. ▸▸ Foot points outwardly (when standing, the affected foot points away from the body to the outside). ▸▸ Associated with tight Achilles tendon which further deforms the foot. ▸▸ May cause knee and chronic lower back pain.

Identify the primary cause of the problem. Identify the extent of ligament and/or tendon injury. Supporting the foot and ankle with braces. Immobilization in a cast or boot to allow healing (with or without crutches). Orthotic (custom insole) to support the arch and prevent further damage. Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that support the arch and lessen the inflammation in the tendon and joints. ▸▸ Anti-inflammatories to decrease the swelling and inflammation in the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Surgery to reconstruct the arch and prevent further damage if the condition has been unresponsive to conservative care.

5 Reasons that Diets Fail By Ellen Latham

any clients who work out at my facility
refer to themselves as Professional Dieters. They have tried every weight loss plan, scheme, and promise under the sun and have failed over and over. The following five reasons are usually the reasons why.
Reason #1
They were not ready to make a full-time commitment. Weight loss is at least 50% attitude. Do NOT start a weight loss program unless you are ready. ADVICE: Do some serious soul searching and figure out what your personal motivation is to shedding the extra weight. The motivation has to come from you. Then, you need to recharge that motivation everyday if you are going to make it. In this case, short term goals are more important than long term goals.
Reason #2
You expect miracles. You have unreasonable expectations in regard to how much weight you should be losing. You are going to end up very disappointed and fall off the wagon. ADVICE: I know you are looking for that quick fix. It does not exist, even if that infomercial says you will lose 20 pounds in one hour. Snap out of it. If you stay slow and steady, you will be on your way to fantastic end results.

You’re on a ridiculous plan. If you’re following an extreme weight loss plan (i.e. the cabbage soup diet) where it does not remotely resemble normal eating, there is a good chance you will fail. You may lose some weight, but I guarantee it is back on within a week. ADVICE: A good food plan is based on healthy foods that keep you satisfied and energized, not cranky. This food adjustment should be a launching pad for long term lifestyle change.

You failed to include proper fat burning, metabolism- raising exercises in the mix. ADVICE: A fast metabolism is critical to burning fat and managing body weight. The more muscle you use, the more calories you burn. Intervals on the treadmill and multi and single joint weigh training are the best.

Curtain Call
The cast and crew of “BIG, The Musical” gather on stage at South Plantation High School. The Paladin Players brought the story from the 1988 movie to life on stage recently, featuring a cast that included student and faculty guest performers from Plantation Park Elementary, Tropical Elementary, Parkway Middle, and Seminole Middle Schools. Similar to the FAO Schwartz piano seen in the film, South Plantation’s production also featured a sixteen foot, playable walking piano.

Thousands of youngsters armed with baskets and bags couldn’t contain their excitement any longer, as they rushed off in a search for Easter Eggs at the Royal Easter Egg Hunt March 30 at Pop Travers Field. The kids were grouped by age while searching for the hidden eggs, which meant prizes and candy for all.

Hundreds of people turned out recently at Volunteer Park for the annual Garden Fest event. Guests turned out to see the finest in bromeliads, orchids, exotics, palms, butterfly garden plants, garden art and more.
