t’s going to be a dog day afternoon this month at the Happy Trails Dog Park. On January 28, pets and their owners are invited to the city’s annual Doggie Palooza, an event designed to provide a fun day for pet lovers, as well as information on canine-related products and services in the area. Organizers say it is one of their best-attended events of the year. “Every year we average about 2,300 people. It is always packed, rain or shine,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city of Plantation. Organizers will turn Happy Trails Dog Park, inside Seminole Park, into a 5-hour doggie expo. There will be at least 55 pet-friendly K-9 couture? The expo will offer a "best-dressed" contest. vendors providing information on everything dog owners need to know, as well as booths run by rescue and adoption groups. There will be two K-9 demonstrations by the Plantation Police Department, a Frisbee dog show, doogie fun zone obstacle course, free pet drawings, a fashion show, agility track and social area. There will also be three contests; an owner-pet look-alike contest, best-dressed and best pet trick. “It’s always a lot of fun. The only thing we ask is that the dogs are leashed and owners pick up after their dogs,” said Lockard. Now in its 10th year, Lockard said Doogie Palooza is one of only a few dog expos still being held in the area, which is why he believes it draws such a big crowd. The

venue is also a bonus. Happy Tails Park provides five acres dedicated to man’s best friend. The park features three distinct activity areas: a leash free run and fun area for large dogs, an exercise area ideal for agility training and an area for smaller dogs. It is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. until dusk, seven days a week. Various canine events and activities are held throughout the year. Doogie Palooza will be held January 28 at the Happy Trails Dog Park, located at 6600 S.W. 16 Street in Plantation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a $1 entry fee to benefit a Paws for Smiles, a local pet therapy group. f you have little ones who might enjoy a “walk on the wild side”, make sure you check out a program being offered through the Kennedy Community Center in Plantation. The city, in partnership with the Sawgrass Nature Center, is hosting a “Nature in the Woods” series to help connect children with the great outdoors through monthly themed programs. “It is a great program that shows them they don’t need high-tech things to have fun. It brings them closer to nature and that is the whole point,” said Greg Polins, a Site Manager with the center, which is located at 5555 Palm Tree Road. The program is held one Saturday each month for children ages 3-7 who get to enjoy nature presentations with a wildlife friend, different learning stations, arts and crafts, music and movement, building, gardening, climbing and more. Each month is a different discovery. Since beginning in October, the kids have learned about “Batty Bats”, “How Groundhog’s Garden Grew”, and “Alex the Alligator”. The next class “Wigglies Snake” will be held January 14. The program is held in the nature center at the Kennedy Community Center, a small area built specifically for kids that is made up of eight stations linked to nature exploration and building. Community Center managers started holding programs there during summer camp, and organized

The next “Nature in the Woods” program will be held Saturday, January 14 and the topic will be “Wigglies Snake”. lmost 8 years after Marilynn Sandler lost her beloved husband Bob, the Plantation widow decided it was time to start dating again. The retired teacher went to a few singles events, but felt uncomfortable walking into a huge crowd trying to meet someone. Worse, many of the men she met were either too young or too old for her. It wasn’t until she went to a speed dating event at the Weisman Delray Community Center, that she began to find her comfort zone. There, in a safe and low key environment, she could meet up to ten new friends per evening, all in her age bracket. “Even if you don’t meet your prince or princess charming, you can still have a fun evening with speed dating, and there’s no pressure,” said Sandler. Working with Sherry Bernstein, the program organizer, Sandler asked if she could start a similar program in Broward County. They held their first one in October, bringing together single seniors in a venue designed to let them meet new people in a friendly and fun experience. Participants are all between the ages of 60-72, a gap the organizers say
isn’t always taken into consideration at single events. “There’s a certain finesse to dating,” said Bernstein. “When you reach our age, it is difficult to meet a man or woman.” The group invites an equal number of men and women. The men and women have seven minutes to get to know one another before a bell sounds, and the men rotate to the next table. Paper and pens are on each table in case anyone wants to exchange contact information. Afterwards, everyone enjoys coffee and cake. Even if a love match isn’t made, sometimes it is just a great way to find someone to enjoy dinner and a movie with. “It is so much easier to meet someone this way,” Sandler said. The group is planning to meet at least twice a month, Sundays at 7 p.m. at the Environ Cultural Center in the Inverarry Country Club. Emissary Shares Israeli Culture in Plantation By Julie Levin

Ben Yossef is partnering with many of Federation’s network of agencies to create innovative programs to engage children, teenagers and families. Among the ideas he is working on; setting up video conferences between Israeli and American teens to build new bridges of understanding. He will also be working with the Israeli Scouts. Ben Yossef says while serving in the military, he had a chance to meet other young adults from around the world, particularly the states, and was often surprised by their lack of knowledge about Israel’s accomplishments and everyday life in his country. After completing his service in the military, Ben Yossef went to work as a counselor at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel, but then had the chance to volunteer to be an Israeli emissary in the states. He said he knew immediately it was something he wanted to do. “Being part of the Jewish community in Israel means understanding that the Jewish community who lives outside of Israel is an integral part of our equation,” Ben Yossef said. “We are all part of a giant Jewish family throughout the world, and I am glad to come from the holy land to join yours in America.”

t just 23 years old, Dror Ben Yossef’s trip to Florida is unlike many others. Instead of visiting with the purpose of soaking up the sun and checking out the beach, the Israeli man’s journey to the South Florida has a deeper goal in mind. He’s traveled here as an “emissary” to provide a first-hand look into his homeland, and share its culture and treasures. “I am here to share my thoughts and my point of view on the real Israel, the Israel I know,” said Ben Yossef, who is from the Israeli city of Haifa. Ben Yossef arrived in Plantation in September, and plans to stay for a full year working side-by side with educators, Jewish professionals and youth to promote Israel’s culture, traditions, holidays and heritage. As part of the Jewish Federation of Broward County partnership with the City of Nesher in northern Israel and through a grant from the Federation’s Jewish Community Foundation, Ben Yossef is working through their “Shaliach” or emissary program. “We know his mission will be to inspire Jews throughout our community to connect with their people, their heritage and land. And empower us all to build a thriving Jewish community both here and a strong Israel,” said Dr. Sam Meline, who together with

There are several steps you can take throughout 2012 to reduce your tax liability. To make it easier, I’ve compiled a list of suggestions on how to reduce your potential tax bill. Take advantage of retirement savings vehicles. Today’s contributions to retirement accounts can greatly reduce your tax bill. If you have a 401(k) plan at your job, check with the human resources department about increasing your contributions. If you don’t participate, find out when you can enroll and definitely do it. Even if you have a 401(k) at work, consider opening an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or contributing to an existing account. Your choice of a traditional IRA or a Roth account depends upon your personal financial situation. The key to an IRA is to take full advantage of these tax-favored accounts. You can contribute up to $5,000 (or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older) in either type of IRA. Evaluate your investment portfolio. It’s always a good idea to do this periodically, especially when it comes to your taxes. If you sold any holdings during the year and made a profit, you owe taxes on that money. You can reduce, or possibly eliminate, that tax bill by selling corresponding assets on which you will take a loss. In the coming year, as you look to rebalance your investments make sure you choose assets that pay qualified dividends. Tally your deductions. If you itemize your tax return, you can lower your taxable income by increasing your deductions. Itemized deductions include expenses for health care, personal property taxes, mortgage interest, gifts to charity, job-related expenses, tax preparation fees, and investment-related expenses. Some of their Eagle Scouts have also completed their service projects at Plantation United Methodist Church. Their main goal now is finding a way to make sure as many of their scouts as possible attend summer camp at Camp Woodruff in northeast Georgia, which gives the boys opportunities to earn merit badges, complete requirements for rank advancement, take part in older scout high adventure activities, troop activities and see other states and attractions. “It builds moral character and it provides a great outdoor experience,” said Zimmerman.

Anyway you look at it, Boy Scout Troop 111 is a busy group. “We may not be the biggest troop around, but we are active,” said Scoutmaster Chris Zimmerman. Troop 111 recently wrapped up its biggest fundraiser of the year; their annual Spaghetti Dinner and All American Bazaar which raises money to support the troop’s programs, particularly a 10-day summer camp experience for the boys. The scouts cooked the spaghetti from scratch and served up close to 180 dinners. Chartered at the Plantation United Methodist Church, Troop 111 is part of the Pine Island District in the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Founded in 1965, they›ve been serving the South Florida Community for more than 45 years. They are also the home-base for 115 Eagle Scouts, scouting›s highest rank. “We’ve been successful because of camaraderie, community and parent involvement,” said Zimmerman, whose son John recently made Eagle Scout. Currently, Troop 111 is made up of 17 active scouts, ages 11-18, who camp once a month at locations around Florida, and do a raft of community service projects in between. Zimmerman says in order to instill leadership and organizational skill, the scouts plan and run as much of the activities as possible. Throughout the year, they help

ifth graders from Michelle Jindracek’s class at Tropical Elementary School think the sky is the limit when it comes to recycling. To help prove the point, they designed an innovative recycling bin that was one of five honored recently in the Design a Greener Future Recycling Bin Contest at Young at Art in Davie. The winning bin from the Plantation school was modeled after a spaceship, created entirely out of recycled goods and named “Rocketing Towards Recycling”. “The theme for our entry was something the kids all came up with together,” said Tropical Art Teacher Libby Hodges, who worked with the class on the project. he World Health Organization released some disturbing facts about falls. It warned that nearly 500,000 individuals in the United States die each year from falls. As such, falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional death from injury each year. In addition, of the approximately 38 million falls that occur each year, more than half are significant enough to require medical care. The portion of the population most at risk for falls is the elderly and children. Children are highly susceptible to falls because their bodies are still developing. They are also naturally curious about their environment and, as they grow, insist on more independence and take on risk-taking behaviors. The elderly are at the highest risk of death or serious injury due to a fall with such risk increasing with age. In fact, the death rates from falls are highest among adults 60 years and older. Senior citizens are more prone to falls because of bodily changes brought about by aging and also because their environments are not well adapted to their needs. Homes are a frequent site for falls. According to the NIH Senior Health, six out of every ten falls occur at home, where we often move around without thinking about our safety. Here are some tips to help prevent home accidents and injuries:
▸▸ Do not walk around in socks or stockings. ▸▸ Be sure rugs have skid-proof backs or are tacked or taped to the floor. ▸▸ Use non-skid bath mats in the bathroom. ▸▸ Make sure stairs are well lit and have railings on both sides. ▸▸ Keep a flashlight and a lamp near your bed. ▸▸ Replace satin sheets and comforters with ones made from non-slip material like cotton. ▸▸ Place lights in the staircase and along the path from the bedroom to the bathroom. ▸▸ Reduce clutter—boxes, newspapers, cords, toys—especially in bedrooms and walkways. ▸▸ Repair loose tiles or wooden floorboards immediately. ▸▸ Quickly remove liquids, grease or food spills on the kitchen floor. Considering the frequency of falls, you would think people would exercise extreme caution to prevent falling. Yet statistics show that this is not the case. ongtime Educator John Drag Jr. has been making a difference in the classroom for decades. Recently, the Plantation man had the chance to put his stamp on a brand new school, by helping to build it from the ground up. “When they called and asked if I wanted to help, I immediately knew this was something I wanted to do,” said Drag Jr., who is the Principal of Broward Community Charter Schools and Discovery Middle Charter School in Coral Springs. Drag Jr., was one of 50 principals and superintendents from across the nation who helped construct a twostory, 16-classroom school in Constanza, Dominican Republic November 29 -December 6. The group was part of the 2011 Lifetouch Memory Mission project, the result of a long-time partnership between Lifetouch, the nation’s largest school photography company, and World Servants, a nonprofit, nondenominational, faithbased organization. Each year, the two organizations band together to construct a school in an impoverished community. Lifetouch is also teaming with National Association of Elementary School Principals, The American Association of School Administrators and the National Association of Secondary School Principals for the project. The chance to help build a school was too much too pass up for Drag Jr., who was named Broward
County’s Teacher of the Year in 1995. He is part of a family that has been in education since 1968. His father retired after 35 years as a Principal in Broward County and his mother worked for more than 20 years as the Office Manager at Pompano Beach Elementary School. Volunteering on a global scale is also nothing new to Drag Jr., who has taken teachers to Costa Rica to study the Rain Forest, traveled to the Bahamas to help train teachers and also spent a year with the U.S. Army running a camp outside Baghdad that housed over 3,000 civilian contractors and military personnel. Drag, who is a reservist, was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Drag looked forward to meeting the people in Constanza, and learning about their culture and lifestyle. He also planned to bring as many art supplies as he could carry to donate to the new school, along with art work from his own students. The hope was to establish a rapport between the two schools, using art as their medium. “Hopefully we can coordinate getting some of their art back to hang in our school, and we can make a connection between their school and ours,” said Drag Jr., who has also coached recreational and travel sports in Plantation. Plantation Students Share Generosity By Julie Levin

ozens of Plantation High School students gave of their time recently to be part of this year’s Harvest Drive, the annual Thanksgiving food project that just wrapped up its 19th year. An estimated 100 families picked up a week’s worth of groceries at Plantation High just before the holiday, as well as the supplies for a full Thanksgiving meal. It was the third year Senior Megan Tayar,17, helped out. “I know it is the right thing to do, to help the community,” Tayar said. “I think it’s great we collected so much.” Plantation was one of eight pick-up sites for Harvest Drive. The other sites included Western High School, Fort Lauderdale High School, Pompano Beach High School, South Broward Natalie Marquez, Riahn Bailey and Shantol Scott High School, Taravella High School, help fill grocery bags for the Harvest Drive. Glades Middle School, Westglades Middle School, and All Souls Episcopal Church in Miami Beach. At Plantation High, organizers converted the cafeteria into a massive grocery store. The stage was covered with hundreds of cans, bags and boxes of donated food, and the students moved through with shopping lists putting full grocery bags together for the families who would be picking them up. It was the first year student
Hasan Abul-Khair, 14, pitched in to help. The ninth grader helped by bagging groceries. “I feel bad for the people who have no food, so why not help out if I can,” he said. Harvest Drive began at Country Isles Elementary School in Weston in 1992, when organizers Renee Herman, Kim O’Neil and Patti Bradley all had children at the school. Their first year they helped 35-40 families, but they stuck with Harvest Drive and have expanded it to a countywide effort. Over the years, students from more than 180 public and private schools, churches, temples and neighborhoods have held drives and supplied the Harvest Drive with the non-perishable food that is distributed to the families just before Thanksgiving. This year, an estimated 2,000 families Megan Tayar, 17, works the piles of donated food. received a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries, as well as personal and household necessities. thletic activities place considerable more demand on shoulders than typical daily activities. Throwing and racquet sports require the arm to reach above and behind the body, golf and baseball require the shoulders to rotate across the body, swimming and paddling involve pulling the arm toward the body. This increased movement demand requires the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizer muscles to generate a tremendous amount of force to move and stabilize the shoulder. To make matters worse, these sports demand that these same motions are repeated over and over again. This combination of repetitive motions and high contractile demand can cause problems to develop in the shoulder, as the muscles often cannot keep up with the workload. Over time the muscles become strained and develop small scale injury known as microtrauma. Initially this micro-trauma is not painful, but may be perceived as a mild ache or tightness in the muscles. Although small, the damage still needs to be repaired. With micro-trauma, the body repairs the strained tissue by laying down small amounts of scar tissue in and around the injured area. The scar tissue itself is not the problem-in fact it is a normal and necessary part of healing. The problem occurs when the shoulder is repeatedly subjected to the same high force athletic movements. This causes the same muscles to become strained, and subsequently repaired, over and over again. Over time scar tissue will build-up and accumulate into what we call adhesions. As these adhesions form, they start to affect the normal health and function of the muscles. They will often lead to pain, tightness, stiffness, restricted joint motion, and diminished blood flow. As these scar tissue adhesions accumulate in the shoulder region, it places more and more strain on the muscles as they must now stretch and contract against these adhesions in an attempt to move and stabilize the shoulder. This places even further strain on the shoulder muscles, which leads to more micro-trauma. Essentially a repetitive injury cycle is set-up causing progressive shoulder dysfunction. As the cycle progresses. the ability of the muscles to contract properly is affected and the stability of the shoulder becomes compromised. At this point it is not uncommon for the muscles to give way, resulting in a more severe and debilitating pain. Many athletes come into my office explaining how they have hurt their shoulder during a routine task that they have done thousands of times before. When further questioned, these athletes almost always describe some mild pain or tightness in their shoulders that has been building over time. trial fibrillation is a fairly common heart disorder. As many as 9% of Americans over the age of 65 have atrial fibrillation, which is irregular, rapid contraction of the atria the two upper chambers of the heart. Every heartbeat starts in the atria and moves into the ventricles the two lower chambers of the heart, stimulating them to contract. Normally, the atria and the ventricles contract in a coordinated manner. In atrial fibrillation, the atria beat out of rhythm with the rest of the heart. The atria may beat as many as 350 to 400 times a minute compared with the normal 60 to 100 times a minute. These rapid, irregular contractions make it difficult for the left atrium to empty the blood into the left ventricle. One significant danger of atrial fibrillation is that blood clots can lodge in the brain, causing a stroke. Uncontrolled atrial fibrillation can weaken the heart, which may lead to dilated cardiomyopathy or heart failure.

Many people with atrial fibrillation have no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include: palpitations, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Atrial fibrillation can develop without any underlying heart disorder. This is called lone or primary atrial fibrillation. Causes of secondary atrial fibrillation include: alcohol use, atherosclerosis, caffeine, cardiomyopathy, valvular disease, enlargement of the left ventricle, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, pericarditis, pulmonary embolism, sick sinus syndrome (another type of atrial arrhythmia that involves an improper firing of electrical impulses caused by disease or scarring in the sinus node of the heart, acute respiratory illness, obstructive lung disease, and after open heart surgery. Factors that increase a person’s risk of developing atrial fibrillation include: age older than 60, male gender; and Diabetes mellitus. Because arrhythmias are unpredictable and may be infrequent and last for brief periods of time, they can be difficult to diagnose. Physicians often diagnose atrial fibrillation with the following tests: resting electrocardiogram, Holter or event monitoring, echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography. Treatment of atrial fibrillation aims to eliminate the factors that could be causing it. It may involve rate control, which means controlling the number of times the heart beats per minute but not treating the atrial fibrillation, or rhythm control, which uses medications, cardioversion, catheter ablation, or surgery to prevent atrial fibrillation and thus restore normal rhythm. Atrial fibrillation treatment can also include stroke prevention measures. If you have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation learn to take your own pulse so you can monitor the side effects of treatment. Follow your medication schedule, and keep track of your weight. Any rapid weight gain 3-4 pounds in two days should be reported to your physician.

any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days. Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. T
he hCG diet has become very popular lately. It has been featured on the Dr Oz show and Fox news. Why? Because it works! But first of all, what is the hCG diet? It is not a new diet and has been used successfully for weight loss since 1953 when a British endocrinologist Dr A.T.W. Simeons discovered its weight loss effects. Dr Simeons presented his paper to the medical community in the 50’s stating that a small amount of hCG would target the hypothalamus gland within the brain to release fat stores in the body. The trapped fat would release nutrition and calories for use as energy. This released fat feeds the body so dieters don’t experience the hunger and exhaustion that normally accompanies a low calorie diet. A study in 2010 in The Bariatrician (a journal published by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians) stated that hCG does work and found that individuals lost 30% more weight than individuals on a low calorie diet alone. Along with all of this popularity comes a lot of misinformation about the diet, with a lot of companies jumping on the hCG popularity bandwagon and selling homeopathic hCG and hCG online and leading people to believe they are receiving and doing the real hCG diet when in fact they are not. There are also a lot of companies adding hCG to their existing weight loss protocols including diets involving appetite suppressants, cookies, shakes etc and calling it “the hCG diet” or watering down the hCG and not giving it in the correct dosages. So let’s separate facts from fiction. First of all hCG is a prescription medication and can only be prescribed by a physician once a complete physical has been performed. There is no such thing as homeopathic hCG. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotrophin, which is a complex aminopeptide protein, produced during pregnancy. Homeopathic hCG has at best trace amounts of hCG in it, if even that. Real pharmaceutical hCG cannot be purchased online or over the counter without seeing a physician. The hCG protocol is very simple to follow but it is a scientific program and it has to be followed correctly to get the best results. My initial training with hCG was under a doctor who opened one of the first hCG clinic’s in 2007. Since that time, I have put thousands of successful clients through this program with a 99% success rate and am considered an expert in the field. veryone wants to have a white, beautiful smile for holidays. So, you start thinking let me get my teeth whitened. But then comes the question which one should I do? First, you should know how whitening works. Any kind of whitening uses peroxide as the end product which penetrates the microstructure of teeth causing removal of debris and stain molecules. That answers the question that whitening does not remove enamel. Whitening is not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, children less than 16 years old and if you are allergic to bleaching gel.

What medical services do you offer? As a Podiatrist, we specialize in foot and ankle care. We encourage patient education regarding their particular foot problem. We offer conservative non-surgical alternatives.
Your Options:
1. Whitening toothpastes- These
toothpastes usually have some kind of abrasive to remove surface stains only so if you are looking for a drastic change in the color of your teeth, this is not an option. 2. Over-the-counter productsOver-the-counter whitening strips and gels are some of the examples. These products have a low concentration of peroxides and have a whitening affect to a certain extent. If you are looking to get 1-2 shades lighter, they may be right choice for you. 3. Use of trays- Take home trays which are custom made by your dentist is another option. The whitening gel has a higher concentration and the dentist gives you directions on how to use it at home for 2-3 weeks. It requires consistency and compliance on your part. If done properly, it gives 4-5 shades lighter than your natural color. 4. In-office whitening: This is done under the dentist’s supervision and there are several different options, including Zoom whitening, Kor whitening and laser whitening. The concentration of gel used for these procedures is much higher and requires a technique to isolate the gums and soft tissues to prevent any damage to them. This kind of whitening usually has good results and requires one sitting at dentist’s office.

Some things to consider before whitening
What do you enjoy about what you do? In most cases, a patient with foot pain will leave the office feeling much better. People usually take their feet for granted until they have a painful or unsightly problem. Most people don’t realize all the potential problems that can affect the foot. In many cases, sometimes something as simple as a different shoe or the proper stretching can prevent an injury.
1. The most common side effect of whitening is sensitivity commonly described as
“zingers”. If your teeth are already very sensitive or have gum recession or decay, consult with your dentist first. 2. In general, yellowish teeth whiten better than gray teeth. The results of whitening are not as good with teeth that have internal stains like tetracycline and fluorosis. 3. Everyone’s teeth whiten differently and having an expectation that you will get a Hollywood white smile with a system that your friend used, may disappoint you. 4. Tooth colored restorations like resins and crowns do not whiten with the whitening gels. All such procedures must be done after the whitening is completed to avoid different colored teeth in your mouth. 5. Certain foods like tea, coffee and red wine should be avoided while whitening and immediately after. Smokers must know that results may be short term only unless they refrain from smoking.
What are your professional affiliations? I am Board Certified by The American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine. I am also a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, Florida Podiatric Medical Association and Broward County Podiatric Medical Association. What keeps you busy when you are not working? I love spending time with Sharon, my wife of 27 years, as well as my two children Adam, 24, and Paige, 22. I also enjoy photography and traveling.

The 2001 “Pedal for a Cure” team from Plantation-based DHL company poses for a team photo after completing the MS 150, a two day bike ride to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The team donated more than $52,000 to the South Florida chapter of the MS Society November 7 at DHL Headquarters, located at 1210 South Pine Island Road . More than 40 employees, family and friends took part in the ride. DHL also sponsored a lunch stop which was staffed with more than 50 company volunteers and also donated the use of its pickup and delivery vehicles.

Food Drive Holiday Performance
The Dance Conservatory of Florida presented its annual holiday spectacular “Nutcracker” on December 4 at the Miniaci Performing Arts Theatre. The performance by the Plantation-based company included children, ranging from 4 1/2 years old to 13, who danced alongside professional ballerinas. Good Eats
Plantation firefighters were busy laying chicken on the grill at the 55th Annual Firefighter’s Association Barbecue November 6. The firefighters begin cooking 1700 lbs of ribs and 1800 lbs of chicken at 5 a.m. before dishing up the BBQ, with plenty of side dishes, to more than 6000 hungry residents and visitors.
Skylar Lewis, a first grader at American Heritage School, carries donated food to help distribute to families in need over the Thanksgiving holiday. The school joined with Feeding South Florida to create a campaign called “Heritage Helping Hands”, which helped collect 3,400 pound of food over ten days. On November 17th, students including Kavin Sarkar, AuJavae Dixon-Whitfield, Alex Hoffman, and Cady Hasan came into the school gymnasium and helped to sort all of the donated food into boxes.
Bringing Holiday Cheer
Troops from the Great Earth Service (Plantation) Unit of Girl Scouts spent a few hours decorating Plantation General Hospital’s pediatric unit December 4. Four troops got together to decorate the walls, doors ceilings and nurses stations for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza and New Years! The girls also spent some time singing holiday songs and eating peppermint and blueberry candy canes!
