ood, wine and fun were the themes of the 26th Annual Wine, Jazz, and Taste of Plantation. The event, organized by the Plantation Chamber of Commerce, was held at the Renaissance Fort

The band Brass Evolution provided the music. Raffle prizes were awarded and a silent auction took place in a separate room “We attracted a great crowd, helping to showcase the smaller restaurants in the city, network, and promote community,” said Alex Ruane, The Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce’s Special Events and Membership Director. “It was spectacular!” The Plantation Chamber organizes the annual event as a summer get-together. Attendees included local business owners, elected officials and those looking to get a sample of the dining fare in the city.

lantation Council member Jennifer Andreu led the city’s first Juneteenth event, which included dignitaries, historical information and an engaging game attendees played via their cellphones. “It was a great inaugural event and honoring the legacy of Juneteenth is a start to a more inclusive future in our city, state, country, and world,” Andreu said. The event was at the Plantation Historical Museum, located at 511 N. Fig Tree Lane, Plantation, in collaboration with the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library. Juneteenth (a merger of the words “June” and “nineteenth”) commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Galveston, Texas, where it took more than two years for news of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation to reach slaves. U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and State Rep. Daryl Campbell were among the elected officials who gave brief remarks. Author Indyli Brown, who is employed by the city’s Public Works department, presented his children’s book, which has a variety of thoughts and tips regarding our environment. With her daughter operating the technology portion of the activity, Andreu then led attendees to answer questions via Kahoot, a popular phone app used in schools. Kahoot provides a game-based learning platform with friendly competition.

Plantation Celebrates July 4th

lantation residents came out in droves to celebrate the nation’s birthday all day long on July 4th. The annual event is a favorite for all members of the family and this year’s celebrations were no exception. Festivities started at 9:00 am with the Stars & Stripes Independence Day Parade. Kids of all ages looked on as fire trucks and police vehicles were joined by bands, politicians and more. The real part started at 6:00 pm when the Kids’ Fun Zone opened at Central Park. Live music was provided by Big City Dogs on the main stage while children of all ages enjoyed activities including carnival rides, a petting farm, face painting, and

Treats were provided by a number of different of food trucks while residents grabbed their spots on the law for the grand final. “Today we gather in celebration of the 246th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Plantation Mayor Lynn Stoner, “this is one of the best days of the year to live in Plantation.” The concert went into hype mode at 7:00 pm and didn’t stop till the fireworks display boomed for the Nation’s birthday shortly after dark. state planning is not just a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. Estate planning is also life planning. Do you have minor children? If so, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children in the event that you become disabled. Your plan should provide a source of funds for your children’s education, daycare and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. In addition, estate planning encompasses retirement planning and creditor protection planning. It has been estimated that more than half of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of their property, the care and custody of their minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of their estate is left to the state of Florida. Florida has very specific rules in place as to how assets are distributed if a person dies intestate, that is, without a will. What always surprises me is the fact that those people who have invested in an estate plan generally fail to revise or update their plan for up to 20 years. Imagine if you had done your estate plan 20 years ago and never updated it? How different are your financial and personal circumstances now compared with 20 years ago? Would the choices you made, people you identified, and concerns you addressed still be appropriate today? Probably not. A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, when you want and in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees, and costs to be borne by you and your loved ones. Estate planning can bring peace of mind in knowing that after you are gone, your spouse, children and even grandchildren can enjoy the property you leave to them, free from the claims of their creditors. You may rest easier knowing that a surviving spouse’s subsequent remarriage, a child’s marriage or divorce, or even an untimely lawsuit or bankruptcy, will not disrupt your loved ones ability to use and enjoy their inheritance. Your estate plan should be reviewed every two to four years. If you do not have an estate plan, or if you do but it is overdue for a review, it would be wise to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney without delay.
