I
n 2012, a unique program was started at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation by a dedicated individual who wanted to see everyone play tennis regardless of their ability. Although not in a wheelchair, Mark Morgenstern was determined to get a Plantation Adaptive Tennis Program (PAP) “off the ground” literally and figuratively. Fast forward, and the wheelchair tennis program at the center was one of the first and has grown exponentially in the past six years. Thanks to a grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the facility boasts six Top Pro Sports Wheelchairs: Four for adults and two for youth. Additionally, all equipment such as balls, racquets, and a teaching professional are provided free of charge to those that want to participate during the
bi-monthly sessions. Anyone interested is welcome to come out and play on the first and third Thursdays each month from 6:30 pm-9:00 pm. “I wanted to open up the sport of tennis for all to enjoy. I saw a need, made up my mind to solve it, and did so with great success,” exclaimed Morgenstern, Program Coordinator for the Center. “You see we have youngsters, new players, and sports players all having a great time, all at no cost to them. Plus, we have opened the summer and winter to all Armed Forces families living in Broward County! That I have done!” The award-winning Frank Veltri Tennis Center is one of the largest in South Florida with its 26 lighted clay courts and 2 hard courts. The Center hosts four large tournaments each year. Monies raised fund free community
outreach programming such as PAP, tennis advocacy, and improvements throughout the City of Plantation’s many tennis facilities. The 501 (C)3 Not-for-Profit facility is the only organization that offers specially sport-designed wheelchairs for use by the general public. “We are probably Plantation’s best-kept secret which I would like to expose to as many people who would love to join us,” added Morgenstern. Oh, The Places They’ll Go - Tropical Elementary Students Learn Across the Globe BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
irst-grade teacher Jordanna Egan loves to make learning fun and exciting. In a time of such a technology-advanced world, she thought how great it would be for her students to connect with other first-grade students in other states and even other countries. Through professional networking groups on social media, Egan made connections with other teachers sharing the same common interests. One was the Global Read Project where classes read aloud the same book and then discuss together. Empatico, another resourceful site, matches up teachers with the same age students and same availability at least 300 miles away. “Students in my class at Tropical Elementary don’t just read stories that take place on the other side of the world, they go there! Students regularly share their experiences and perspectives via live interactions, videos, photos, and pen-pal letters. Students connect for learning activities that are designed to foster empathy along with global awareness,” explained Egan. The devoted educator wants her students to realize they can tap into opportunities far beyond Plantation,

Florida. Through this project, she wants to show children the world and allow them to see how connected they are.
So far this year they have connected with students on three continents. For their first video conference in November, they spoke with a group of students from Eagle Eye Universal Academy in Ghana, Africa
about how they play. The conversation was intended to be a quick ten minutes but stretched to thirty as students compared their favorite games, foods and weather patterns. The class was so excited to share, and they realized that although they live across the globe from each other that they are not so different after all. The virtual lesson presented a perfect opportunity for the students in Africa to put their English skills to use. “I like learning new things about other schools and then I know a little more about their lives,” exclaimed student Hayleigh Hilton. Before winter break, the class had a video conference with a group of students from Holcombe Brook Primary School in Bury, United Kingdom. They enjoyed performing holiday songs for each other and then discussed holiday traditions. “I really enjoy doing this with my students. If students are given opportunities to meaningfully interact with one another we can create a lifetime of positive change. Video conferencing and connecting globally helps students see issues from others’ perspectives. It also teaches them to communicate respectfully and collaborate to solve problems. These are essential skills for all students,” added Egan.

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Youth Athletes BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
P
arents should encourage their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovascular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly advised that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries. In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however, the majority of these children outgrow these conditions without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping
during activity. Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of long-term ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist, immediately, for better longterm prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle. Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immobilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years. Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. Commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in basketball because of the force from coming
down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest, immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy. Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury. The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. S
pring has sprung! If you’re new to South Florida, you will discover there is a very short time between the chills of winter and the blistering heat of summer which brings us some of the most pleasant and picturesque days of the entire year. However, along with all its splendor, spring also brings its traditionally fickle weather. Spring weather patterns can change drastically, with little or no notice, and can present potentially serious hazards. Lightning: South Florida is the lightning strike capital of the world. More people are injured or killed by lightning in Florida than anywhere else. This is very much in part due to the flat terrain and open spaces such as golf courses. It is important to understand that lightning can reach out as much as five miles from a storm front. So, while the sky may seem perfectly clear, there may be a storm rapidly approaching. If you are outside and you hear thunder, take the warning seriously and seek shelter. If the storm approaches and lightning is active, avoid using electronic devices as well. Lightning has also been the cause of many fires in South Florida including large fires in the
Everglades. Ensure your home’s electrical service is properly grounded. Loss of power: Temporarily losing power during a storm is common in South Florida. Most of the time power will return within a few minutes. If you had several items operating when the power went out, consider turning them off to prevent a surge when the power returns. Also, be sure to check your electric stove and turn it off immediately. When the power comes back, so will the stove and you may not realize it. Several kitchen fires have been started that way. If power is out for an extended time and you choose to use a generator, keep it away from open windows or doors. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a byproduct of gas driven engines. It is a colorless, odorless gas that displaces oxygen in the atmosphere with often fatal results. Ensure you have a CO detector in the home as well. Downpours: South Florida is known for its rapid and sudden rain gushers. Even when the sun is shining, heavy, blinding rains can seem to appear from nowhere. Carrying an umbrella or lightweight rain gear during the spring and early summer months is never a bad idea. If you are driving and encounter a rain gusher, do not stop. Also, do not turn on your hazards. Instead turn on your windshield wipers and headlights. Slow your speed as the roads will get very slippery during the first few minutes of the downpour. You may have no idea of how deep the water is or what is underneath it. If a power line is brought down by high winds or heavy rain, assume it is live. Do not approach and call for assistance. A little awareness of spring’s rapidly changing weather patterns and how to handle them will allow you to enjoy the perfect seasonal weather all that much more. Planning for Pregnancy

K
nowledge and preparation are key ingredients to being successful in all aspects of life, and planning for pregnancy is no different. This is an ideal time to see your obstetrician for a consultation and a checkup. During this visit, all pertinent medical and family history will be reviewed, and a folic acid supplementation will also be recommended to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects such as spina bifida by up to 70%. A first prenatal visit should be scheduled between 6 and 9 weeks. A timeline will be created for the pregnancy with achievable goals. Positive habits that are formed during preconception are encouraged and certain myths are dispelled. Most patients devoid of complications are advised to continue their preexisting routines. There are a few absolute contraindicated activities during pregnancy which can be discussed with your physician. An ideal body weight that is achievable as a starting point to pregnancy is an important topic. It will decrease the incidence of certain complications that may negatively impact the pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension. While most foods are safe during this period, some such as certain fish and unpasteurized cheeses should be avoided. This is the optimal time when alcohol and drugs should be eliminated, and caffeine reduced to no more than 200 milligrams per day. An exercise plan should be designed with the intention of continuing it throughout the pregnancy and beyond. In most patients, exercise is encouraged throughout the pregnancy while keeping in mind certain physiologic changes that occur. A good starting point is engaging in mild to moderate exercise for 150 minutes per week, which is about 20 minutes per day. Most women do not need to gain more than 25 pounds during pregnancy while keeping in mind that most of the weight gained occurs at the end of gestation. Except in the rarest conditions, bedrest has not been shown to be beneficial in pregnancy and has been linked to muscle atrophy and blood clots which can form in the legs and lungs. After delivery, your obstetrician will establish a customized plan which takes into account diet, exercise and weight loss. This will be determined by the weight gained in pregnancy, any complications, and mode of delivery. It is not uncommon for most patients to resume being active within a few days and not have to wait the full 6 weeks as previous customs dictated. Breastfeeding plays a pivotal role in aiding weight loss while providing bonding opportunities and the optimal diet for physical and cognitive development for the newborn. Pregnancy is one of the most treasured times in a woman’s life. Starting with the preconception period and continuing up to the 6-week checkup and sometimes beyond, a trusted and well-respected OB/GYN typically has one common goal: Repay the patients’ trust placed in the physician with an uneventful pregnancy, a smooth labor course, a healthy baby, and the quickest recovery possible.

FUNDS FOR FITNESS - JAFCO was presented with a $15,000 grant by Republic Services for its dedication to programs promoting healthy lifestyles. The check was presented at the Sunrise City Commission meeting in January. The funds received as a result of this grant afforded the opportunity to install outdoor fitness equipment safely along with the ability to provide personnel to help further the children’s knowledge of healthy living through exercise.
